“self”.Howisitpossibletobesoself‐centered?
Youallknowagreatnumberofpeoplethroughexperiencingpersonalinterchange–throughwordofmouthorthroughreadingaboutthem–althoughyounevermetthem.HaveyouevermetRembrandtorVanGogh?Yetyoustillknowtheirpaintings.NoneofushavemetEdwardHartleyAngle,butwestillfollowandusehisbasicappliancedespiteitsextensiveinnovations.Ikeepthinkingofouralumniassociation.Weallstartedoutasindividuals–myselfincluded(witheachnewclass)andaftertwoyears,wewereneartobeinga“closefamily”.Wemayhavemovedcontinentsapart,butwhenwemanagetocometogether–meetingsorjustvisiting–wegreeteachotherhappily,andfeelaclosekinship.It’sascloseasitcouldpossiblygettoa“familyatmosphere”andnowthatIthinkaboutit,wehaveslowlybutsurelybeendevelopingalargefamily.Wegraduatedourfirstclassin1957andrecently,wegraduatedour56thclass.Wow!Tosomeitisalmostalifetime;tousit’sashorttimeofmakingfriends.Igota“bigkick”outofJohnGrahams“HotSeat”treatiseonRetentionintheJCOrecently.
Someoftheanswerswerequiteinterestingandevenhumorousalthoughthereseemedtobeafairlyconsistenttheme–disruptivemusclepatternsandundesirableskeletalgrowthdirections‐younameit!Thereseemstobesome“sameness”intheretainerssupplied,butagreatervarietyintheskeletalpatterns,musclepatterns,growthpatternsetc.,etc.Variationisthenameofthegame–butwehaveatendencytothrowthesameretainersintomostofourpatients’mouths.Isn’tittimewethoughtoutRetentionalittlemoreintelligently?Wehavegottoputasmuch“thinking”intoRetentionasweputintodiagnosisandtreatment.Inretentionwehavetotry–atleasttry–tomakethepunishment(Retention)fitthecrime(allthefacetsinvolvedinthevariableswehavetocontendwithinanindividualmalocclusion).AllmalocclusionsareNOTALIKE!Shouldallretainersbealike?Ithinknot–butIhaveyettocomeupwiththemagicOneandOnlyGreatRetainer.MaybewecangetourGreatFamilytogetherandfindthe“MagicRetainer”.Inthemeantime,wehavetoseriouslythinkeachretainerouttoproperlysuiteachindividualpatient.Asanexample–whenwecorrectedabilateralcross‐bite,why,why,doweputinamaxillaryHawleyRetainerwhenittakesuppalatalspaceandpreventsthetonguefromgettingupthere??Ican’tfigureoutwhy!Abetterquestionwouldbe–“whyshouldn’twe”–oristhisnegativethinking?Ithinknot!!Ithinkit’sPOSITIVETHINKING!

Damon Forum 2014 Phoenix Arizona ThispastJanuarytheOrmcosponsoredtheseniorresidents,ledbyDr.Bellohusen,toPhoenixfortheDamonForumheldattheJWMarriottDesertRidgeResort.LecturesrangedfromanoverviewoftheDamonphilosophytothelatestinorthodontictechnology.ThegroupwalkedawaywithanewappreciationofDr.Bellohusen’scommitmenttobringthissystemintotheEastmanclinics,andgavethemtheprowesstouseit.Whennotatlectures,theconferenceofferedachanceforresidentstoenjoynearbyScottsdale,andTempeatadinnerwithalumniincludingDr.JosephDetrich.TheconferenceendedwithaGreatGatsbythemedballwithallthepropstoboot.

TheannualChristmaspartywasextrafestivethisyearwiththeaccompanimentofasnowstorm,andexceededtheexpectationsofall.Livepianomusicsetthestagefordancingledbythehost,andthefoodwasdelicious.

Well,it’sabouttime–andwell,hereitis!It’snotearthshaking,norisitastorywhereyouwillbebroughtoutofthedarkness,andcometoseethelight.Ifit’snotthisorthat,exactlywhatisit?Thebookapproaches200pages,andisallabout“us”,andsurprisinglyitstitleis“HotSeat”.ThecoverpictureisofJoanneandme,whenmyhairwasstillblack,andwearedancingatmyseniordentalprom.Iwascourtingherthen,andtryingtogethertosayyes.“Thosewerethedaysmyfriend…”It’sreallyastoryoftheevolutionofourorthodonticdepartment,ofourphilosophy,andofourgrowth.Itisastoryofsomeofthegreatfacultymemberswehavehadinthepast,andthosewestillhaveatpresent.Unfortunately,someofourgreatfacultymembersarenolongerwithus,butourmemoriesofthemarestillwithus,andtheircontributionstoourknowledge,arestillembeddedinourminds.Pleasenote,thebookisnotforsaleforpersonalgain.Itisforsaleforacontributiontoourorthodonticdepartment.WewanttokeepourOrthodepartmentaviablegrowingdepartment.Togetherwehavecreatedsomethingreallyworthwhile,andgood.Let’skeepitthatwayandkeepourdepartmentgoing.PleasecontacttheorthodonticdepartmentforacopyandinformationaboutavoluntarycontributionatLisa_Grasta@urmc.rochester.eduor585‐275‐5012.

J. Daniel Subtelny
J. Daniel Subtelny is a world renowned orthodontist,
researcher and teacher. He is known for his pioneering
work with cleft palate patients, craniofacial orthodontics
Department of Orthodontics in 1955 and serves there
sti ll as Professor Emeritus. He has won numerous
awards and is cited as ‘my most important mentor’ by
many of his former students.
This biography reveals so much more about Dan
than can be found in his impressively long and broad
curriculum vitae. At over 90 years of age, Dan has lived
events including the Great Depression and World
War I I . Dan vividly describes his early life growing up
in New York City, his time in the army, dental school,
meeting Joanne Davis – the love of his life, why he
chose Orthodontics and his remarkable career. He
remembers many poignant and often funny stories along
the way, making this memoir all the more engaging and
interesting to every reader … not just orthodontists.

Hotseat Bios: Welcome to the class of 2016!
OmarSaid:fromParis,France,wasraisedinCairo,Egypt.HegraduatedfromDentalschoolatCairoUniversityin2010,andcompletedaoneyearexternshipthereaftergraduation.Concurrentlyhebegantrainingataprivateorthodonticpractice.After,heattendedorthodonticcoursesattheUniversityofBordeauxinFrance,thencontinuedworkinginthesameprivateorthodonticclinicforanother2years.In2013hecompletedapedodonticresidencyinCairo,andwentontoapreceptorshipinorthodonticsatUCLA.Asidefromteeth,heenjoysplayingsoccer,waterskiing,camping.
ChristopherD.Baker:FromHanover,NHhasbeenamemberoftheEastmanfamilysince2012,whenhewasacceptedintothe2‐yearFellowshipinOrofacialPain.PriortoEastman,ChrisattendedtheUniversityofNewHampshire,wherehereceivedhisB.A.inPoliticalSciencein2005.Aftergraduation,heworkedasamen’ssoccer&alpineskiracingcoach,whilecompletingaPost‐baccalaureatePre‐MedprogramattheUniversityofVermont.HereceivedhisDMDfromBostonUniversityin2012.Inhissparetime,Chrisenjoysbeingwithfamilyandfriends,rootingforBostonsports,andtrainingforbikeracesthroughoutthenortheast.
AnniaLeGoffwasraisedinCliftonNJ.SheattendedSetonHallUniversityinSouthOrange,NJwhereshereceivedherBSinBiologyandminorsinChemistryandFrench.AnniawillbeearningherDDSandMPHthiscomingMay2014fromColumbiaUniversityCollegeofDentalMedicineandMailmanSchoolofPublicHealth.Inherfreetimeshelikesworkingonsmallhomerepairs,watchingperioddramasandHouseHunters.AnniaisverygratefulandexcitedtobecomepartoftheEastmanfamily.
Dimitrios Michelogiannakis: was born in Rochester NY but was raised in Athens, Greece. He attained his DDS degree from the University of Athens in 2012. He practiced general dentistry in his family’s private clinic as well as during his compulsory military service. During his free time he enjoys marathon running, swimming, water polo, playing chess and competing in debate tournaments. Dimitrios is very excited to join the Eastman Orthodontic family, while spending some years at his birthplace.
LaurenVitkus:wasraisedinSkaneateles,N.Y.&attendedcollegeatBrownUniversityinRI,graduatingwithherdegreeinCivilEngineeringin2009.Priortodentalschool,shespentayearasagraduateassistantcoachinglacrosseatLeMoyneCollegeinSyracuse,N.Y.ShereceivedherDDSthispastMayfromtheUniversityatBuffaloSchoolofDentalMedicine.Sheenjoysspendingtimewithherfamily,traveling,cookingandoutdooractivities.Sheisverymuchlookingforwardtowhatthenexttwoyearswillbring!
TatianaWitte:wasborninasmalltowninWesternUkrainenexttotheCarpathianMountains.WhenTatianawas21years‐old,sheimmigratedtotheUnitedStates,andobtainedherbachelorsdegreeinbiologyfromtheOhioStateUniversityalongwithherDDSfromUniversityofCalifornia,LosAngeles.TatianaisveryexcitedtojointheEastmanOrthodonticfamilythisyear.Sheenjoysspendingtimewithherhusband,Curt,andher5year‐olddaughter,Katerina.Shelovestraveling,outdooractivitiesandmusic."
