In 2010, more than 2.1 million people visited an emergency room due to unaddressed dental pain.!!The ADA is addressing these concerns to access to dental care through the Action for Dental Health (ADH) Campaign. It is a community-based, three-pronged approach to:!

Provide care now to people who suffer from untreated dental disease.!Strengthen and expand the public/private safety net.!Bring disease prevention and education into communities.!!

To support this effort, we are asking Congress to pass the Action for Dental Health Act. To date, over 42 members of Congress have signed onto the bill. This $20 million proposal will implement key initiatives of the ADH Campaign that will both reduce barriers to care and address the dental health crisis in America.

ASDA GetFIT Learn about OU ASDA’s new initiative which aims to keep our student

body happy and healthy.

Faculty  members  compete  in  the  ASDA  GetFIT  category  during  this  year’s  Fall  Dental  Olympics.    Here  they  are  seeing  who  can  hold

Eagle  Pose  the  longest.

fall  asleep.    It  is  sad  that  we,  as  health  care  providers,  can   hardly   find   the   time   to   keep   ourselves   healthy  while  we  are  preaching   to  our  patients   the  benefits  of  a  healthy  lifestyle.      !With  this  realization  in  mind,  OU-‐ASDA  launched  the  ASDA  GetFIT  Initiative  this  fall  to  promote  an  active  and  healthy  lifestyle  while  in  dental  school.    The  goal  of   this   project   is   to   make   healthy   living   easier   for  dental   students,   while   also   showing   that   there   is  always   enough   time   to   take   care   of   yourself   in  between  caring  for  your  patients.  !As  part  of  this  initiative,  ASDA’s  Activities  Committee  put  on  a  Welcome  Week  for  all  ASDA  members.    This  week  included  a  Smoothie  Bar,  Yoga  for  Dentists,  a    !

Salad   Bar,   a   Yogurt   Parfait   Bar,   and   an   interclass  Ultimate   Frisbee   Competition.     In   addition,  throughout   the   semester,   there   were   ASDA   GetFIT  events   to   promote   healthy   living   while   in   dental  school.    These   included  an  ASDA  team  in   the  Susan  G.   Komen   5K,   an   ASDA   GetFIT   category   in   our  Annual  Fall  Dental  Olympics,   and  multiple  Yoga  For  Dentists  sessions.  !Although   these  events  are  only  a   small   step   toward  overall  health  and  wellness,   it   is  our  hope  that  they  motivate   each   dental   student   to   take   their   health  into  their  own  hands.    Good  grades  and  refined  hand  skills   will   make   you   a   great   dentist;   however,   they  will  do  you  no  good   if  you  aren’t  healthy  enough  to  get  into  work  everyday!  !ASDA   plans   on   continuing   this   GetFIT   initiative  throughout   the   year,   and   are   working   on   another  Welcome   Week   for   the   spring   semester   to   remind  everyone   to   stay   active   even   in   the   colder  weather.    Also,   we’re   planning   on   expanding   the   initiative   to  take   on   a  mental   wellness   approach   in   addition   to  the   physical   component.   Until   then,   we   challenge  everyone   to   stay   healthy   throughout   the   holiday  season  and  come  back  ready  to  stay  fit  with  GetFIT!  !

As   dental   students,   we   spend   our   days   sitting.    Whether  we  are  hunched  over  a  patient  (let’s  face  it—ergonomics   is   not   any   dental   student’s   strong  suit),  or  seated  for  hours  of  lecture,  we  are  immobile  from   at   least   8:00am-‐5:00pm   Monday   through  Friday.    This  doesn’t  even  take  into  consideration  the  hours   of   studying   spent   after   we   return   home.    Forget   the   gym;   forget   making   a   healthy   meal—when   I   get   home,   I   sit   at  my   desk,  make   a   bowl   of  Ramen  noodles  with  a  side  of  Oreos  and  study  until  I

Fall

Dental

Olympics

This year OU ASDA hosted our second annual Dental Olympics! It was an exciting evening filled with Jeopardy-style questions ranging from humorous, like "Which professor has a twenty pound cat?" to more technical dental anatomy questions. We also included an ASDA GetFIT category, which required team members to push themselves to their physical limits with sit-ups, planks, seated wall squats, and even a difficult yoga pose! Although the team in the lead fluctuated

throughout the game, the DS4 class pulled through in the end to win the game. Congratulations, DS4s!! November 2015

Loupes Fair

On November 14 of this year, ASDA hosted the annual Loupes Fair featuring five companies: Lumadent, Q-Optics, Designs for Vision, SurgiTel, and Orascoptic. This event provided a great opportunity for students to personally speak with multiple company representatives and ask questions about specific loupes, try on different frame shapes and sizes, as well as a variety of magnifications and lights. Many students took this opportunity to purchase loupes for the upcoming semester. ADSA sincerely thanks all the representatives for taking their time to help make this hands-on event possible.

This   year   I  was   one  of   the   two   students   selected   to   attend  the   ASDA   National   Leadership   Conference   in   Chicago,   IL.  There  were   a   number   of   sessions   that   I  was   excited   about  and  I  was  not  disappointed!    The  Conference  was  set  up  such  that  everyone  could  attend  the  general  sessions  in  the  mornings  and  then  break  out  into  sessions   of   their   choice.   On   the   first   day,   the   keynote  speaker,  Adam  Braun  of  the  Pencils  of  Promise  Organization,  one  of  the  most  inspiring  people  I  have  had  the  opportunity  to   listen   to,   delivered   the   perfect   pitch   to   kickstart   the  conference.    His   story   is   one   of   extraordinary  proportions.  From   surviving   a   disaster   on   the   sea   to   realizing   his   life’s  purpose,  and  from  fulfilling  that  purpose  to  inspiring  others  finding  theirs.    Another  general  session  that  really  stood  out  to  me  was  on  non-‐verbal   communication   for   dentists.   Vanessa   Van  Edwards,   a   lead   investigator   at   an   organization   called  Science  of  People,  presented  this  session.  If  you  have  heard  of  the  TV  show  called  “Lie  to  Me”,  it  is  based  on  the  research  done   by   Vanessa   and   her   team.     She   talked   about  recognizing  body   language   in  patients  and  also  using  some  techniques   in   our   own  body   language   to   build   trust   in   our  patients.   Since   attending   this   session,   I’ve   become   more  cognizant   to   patient’s   non   verbal   cues,   such   as   a   patient  sitting  with  both  hands  in   their   pockets   and  l e g s   c r o s s e d ,  demonstrating   anxiety  versus  someone  who  is  laying   in   the   chair  relaxed   with   their  hands   on   the   side   and  l e g s   u n c r o s s e d .    Vanessa   also   talked  about   recogn iz ing  m i c roexp re s s i on s ,  which   of   course   will  take   years   of   practice  to  master.  For  those  of

One of OU ASDA’s goals this year is to foster greater involvement among members. We planned to do this by sending members-at-large to National ASDA events along with

our OU ASDA leaders and committee members. This fall we sent two members-at-large, Brent Haynes and Parul Ajmani, to

the National Leadership Conference in Chicago. We asked them about their

experience and this is what they had to say.

Reflecting on

National Leadership Conference

you   who   are   interested   in   learning   more   about  understanding   human   behavior,   her   website   is  scienceofpeople.com.  Among   the   breakout   sessions,   my   favorite   one   was  Marketing   Your   Practice   on   a   Budget,   by  Dr.  Mike  Meru.  Dr.  Meru  gave  some  very  good  information  to  help  market  a   startup  practice,   including   resources   to   find  designers,  products   and   services   that   are   necessary   to   fresh  graduates   wanting   to   set   up   their   own   practice   on   a  budget.  For  example,  you  can  get  your  logo  designed  on  a  website   called   99designs.com,   which   includes   the  copyright   to   your   logo.   Another   website   is   fiverr.com,  where  you  can  then  get  your  business  cards  designed  for  $5,  which  can  then  be  printed  through  vistaprint.com  for  less   than   $20.   He   also   discussed   developing   and  managing  a  website  and  using  tools  to  increase  traffic  as  well   as   using   social   media   to   market   your   practice   and  bring  in  new  patients.    Conferences  such  as  these  are  the  perfect  melting  pot  for  future   generations   of   dentists   and   provide   a   great  opportunity   to  make  new  contacts  and  exchange   ideas.   I  know  that  this  is  an  experience  I  will  not  forget  and  some  of  the  ideas  I  garnered  will  be  useful  as  I  start  out  on  my  career  in  dentistry.  THANKS  ASDA!

OU ASDA strongly recommends eating pizza whenever you are in Chicago!

self-‐esteem   and   morale   of   their   personnel.   Although  leaders  are  classically  thought  to  only  guide,  they  must  also  have  an  altruistic  desire  to  serve  their  team.  !While   traditional   leaders   are   seen   as   charismatic   and  powerful,   there  are  others  who  do  not   fit   that   typical  profile.  Many   of   the   people   I   befriended   from  Baylor,  Colorado,   and   other   schools  were   all   incredibly   gifted  and   humble   individuals,   with   their   own   unique   style  towards   leadership   involvement.   This   conference  demonstrated   that   people   can   be   developed   into   a  leader  that  breaks  the  conventional  mold.  For  example,  I   do   not   exhibit   much   of   the   requisite   characteristics  that   would   qualify   me   as   a   natural   leader.   Yet,   my  experience   in   ASDA   has   shown   me   that   anyone,   no  matter   your   talent   or   skills,   can  make   a   difference.     I  believe   that   in   order   to   truly   lead,   you   must   humbly  serve.   I   feel   that  C.S.   Lewis  best   summarized   it  as  not  thinking  less  of  yourself,  but  thinking  of  yourself  less.    !I  want  to  thank  the  ODA  and  OUASDA  for  a  memorable  experience   filled  with  many   new   friends,   novel   ideas,  and  practical  skills  to  refine  me  into  an  effective  leader  and  a  balanced  professional.

-‐Brent  Haynes,  Class  of  2016,  ASDA  Member  !

A   week   of   fatigue   and   anxiety   lingered   over   me   as   I  waited  to  hear  about  our  flight  to  Chicago.  Maybe  it  was  a  combination  of  the  looming  cold  weather,  busy  clinic  schedule,   or   the   sour   taste   of   past   networking  experiences   as   an   engineer   that   lead   to   my   initial  feeling   of   ambivalence   toward   the   weekend.   Despite  this   uncertainty,   I   embarked   on   a   trip   that   would  ultimately   restore   my   perspective   on   what   authentic  leadership  and  professional  friendship  can  truly  be.  !This  year  the  Oklahoma  Dental  Association  gave  me  the  opportunity   to   attend   the   ASDA   National   Leadership  Conference   with   eight   other   students   from   the  University   of   Oklahoma   College   of   Dentistry.   The  conference   assembled   some   of   the   nation’s   best   and  brightest  in  order  to  refine  them  into  future  leaders  of  the  dental  profession.    The  event  was  remarkable  with  many   engaging   speakers   and   informative   breakout  sessions,   ranging   from   career   planning   to   leadership.    Since  I  am  on  the  latter  half  of  my  education,  I  focused  on  business  leadership  and  career  planning.    !Two   of   my   favorite   sessions   were   led   by   Dr.   Chris  Salierno.   He   created   the   blog,     “The   Curious   Dentist,”  and   speaks   across   the   country   on   topics   such   as  practice   leadership   and   clinical   dentistry.     His   talk  “How  to  Lead  a  Dental  Team”  gave  enlightening  advice  on  how  to  effectively  manage  your  staff.  He  elaborated  on  techniques  such  as  the  compliment  sandwich,  which  is   a   polite   way   to   critique   someone   without   being  abrasive.   His   other   session   was   “How   to   Not   Fail  Miserably   in   Private   Practice”   which   focused   on  deciphering   the   mysterious   aspects   of   business  management   along   with   some   practical   ways   to  enhance   the   patient   experience.   It   was   extremely  helpful   for   me   since   I   am   not   business   savvy.   In   that  session,   he   said   something   that   resonated   with   my  view   of   leadership.   He   stated   that   good   leaders   go  out   of   their   way   to   show   a   genuine   interest   in
