2014 European Responsible Care Awards

This year’s Awards Scheme turned the spotlight on a number of excellent company and national association achievements, based on performance under one of the eight key categories defining the Responsible Care ethic.

The successful entries cover a diverse array of innovative products and processes, but three winning projects, acclaimed by the judging panel were a real stand-out, offering elements of originality and best practice sharing.

What the judges say

A well-presented short video helped clinch the judges’ decision to name Emerald Kalama for the Energy Efficiency Award. Key elements earning their praise include the collaborative nature of the project – energy exchange between industrial partners – and the industrial ecology angle based on the use of waste as a resource.

Emerald Kalama Chemical BV takes the plaudits for “Greener steam”

Contact: John Mol, Emerald Kalama Chemical BV – [email protected]

Emerald Kalama Chemical is part of a new energy cooperative aimed at improving Rotterdam’s air quality, whilst reducing its own carbon footprint. The generation of high pressure steam, used in the company’s toluene-based production processes, is now much greener. Partnering with grid manager Stedin, and waste processor and energy supplier AVR, Emerald has developed a grid which enables it to source steam generated from waste rather than fossil fuels.

Developed in 2012, this steam network has led to an annual reduction of 25,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions and 15 million cubic metres of natural gas usage. And this is just the beginning. When fully implemented by expanding to other users, the grid network is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 400,000 tonnes/year.

Latexfalt BV novelty with “Increasing motorway lifetime”

2014 European Responsible Care Awards WinnersProduct Stewardship Award

Porous asphalt has replaced dense asphalt in the construction of motorways, due to a number of advantages. But it has one big drawback – a greater tendency to wear. As a result, its top layers have to be replaced every ten years, unlike the 15 years for conventional asphalt. Latexfalt BV has developed a bio-based binder to counteract this.

The binder rejuvenates the asphalt, allowing the top layer to be repaired rather than replaced – a more economical and sustainable solution. Tests have shown that applying this binder every four years can double a road’s service life. This analysis was carried out in conjunction with a variety of stakeholders including universities, contractors and binder producers, and involved Lifetime Optimisation Tool (LOT) tests and microscopy.

The binder can be sprayed onto road surfaces using standard spraying equipment and incorporates no volatiles or hazardous components. Treated roads have also passed all required anti-skid tests. This product will be used to preserve asphalt roads throughout the Netherlands.

What the judges say

The judges like this entry for being environmentally superior to, and longer lasting than, the current approach. In addition, its wider applicability outside the chemical sector appeals to the panel.

Solvay SA triumphed with their “Saving water through symbiosis” project

2014 European Responsible Care Awards WinnersEnvironment Award

Solvay is part of an ambitious European project, ‘E4-water’, which

aims to save large volumes of potable water and virtually eliminate discharges of salt and liquid waste. Solvay’s contribution is based on three units carried out at their Antwerp site. The first two are already fully operational and are currently saving the company 33 cubic metres of water every hour.

The first unit involves recycling of wastewater through ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis membranes to produce demineralised water that can be used in Solvay’s chemical processes. The second unit can produce this demineralised water from brackish surface water, pumped up from the river and harbour near the plant. Both modules are possible thanks to support from two other companies, Evides Industriewater and Vito nv. The third module capitalises on the previous two. The aim is to treat an external company’s salted waste water and use the resulting purified water and salt concentrate in Solvay’s manufacturing processes. In this way, the external partner avoids effluent production and Solvay gains additional water savings of 20 cubic metres per hour.

Besides saving water, the project serves as an industrial ‘experimental garden’. Companies are motivated to work symbiotically, and experiments and demonstrations are carried out for external users.

What the judges say

Water is a key issue for the chemical sector and the Solvay entry is a very good, up-to date project which offers another fine example of industrial ecology.

2014 European Responsible Care Special Commendation

Solvay SA

Project: Looking at the bigger picture

Solvay is making its products more sustainable by looking at the bigger picture in order to enable the full value chain, including consumers, to reduce environmental impacts.

It has developed an methodology, ‘Sustainable Portfolio Management (SPM)’ which assesses the sustainability of each product in the company’s portfolio. The assessment is divided into two main categories. The first is the environmental impact of manufacturing activities. Here, the financial risk arising from the ‘polluter pays’ principle is measured. The second category is the extent to which the product provides a solution for customers’ own concerns related to sustainable development, such as reduced energy bills, exposure to less toxins and the like. After this assessment, products can be clearly labelled according to their level of sustainability.

SPM facilitates a portfolio shift to sustainable activities. The methodology is also used in corporate processes such as strategic planning, merger and acquisition, and research investments. Solvay aims to have evaluated 80% of its portfolio by turnover by mid-2015.

Environnement CategoryChemische Fabrik Budenheim KG

Project: Successful site reporting

Chemische Fabrik Budenehim KG publishes and distributes an annual environmental statement. It’s filled with detailed information on environmental aspects of the company’s activities, products and services, as well as up-to-date environmental goals and projects. Both positive and negative experiences are reported, and the ultimate goal is transparency.

In 2012 the environmental statement was completely redesigned. Information is now presented visually; vivid graphics are prioritised and text is kept to a minimum. Employees are key to continual improvements in the area, so the publication places them centre-stage. Its pages are full of employee photos and statements, giving a human face to sustainable corporate management. They also add authenticity to the performance indicators and data presented. The publication can be found online and in print, and an English version is planned for late 2014.

Wacker Chemie AG

Project: Fit for their shifts

Years of shift work lead to health complaints which rise with advancing age. This is of increasing relevance as the workforce is ageing, due to demographic changes and later retirement. Wacker has piloted a fitness programme for all shift staff in order to prevent health problems by changing workers’ lifestyles.

The ‘Fit for Your Shift’ programme is carried out with a leading sports club, a nutrition counselling service, and a rehabilitation clinic as well as the pension insurer. Its four phases start with a health week in the clinic where medical checks are carried out and training courses are given. Next is a three month outpatient phase, featuring regular activities on exercise, ergonomics, nutrition and relaxation. This is followed by an autonomous six-month phase where participants are left to follow what they’ve learnt. They then meet again for a refresher weekend at the rehab clinic and plan their next health goals.

So far, 65 people have taken part in the programme. Their wellbeing and health literacy have greatly improved, and the workers report feeling more valued by their employer. The programme, Wacker describes, is

Responsible Care Responsible Care® is the chemical industry’s commitment to sustainability. It is the global chemical industry’s unique initiative to improve health, environmental performance, enhance security, and to communicate with stakeholders about products and processes. In 2006 the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) adopted the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) to promote safe chemicals management around the world. Our industry launched the Responsible Care Global Charter – updated in 2014 - and the Global Product Strategy (GPS) with the aim that by 2020, industry will have established and communicated hazard and exposure information adequate to conduct safety assessments for chemicals in commerce.

About the AwardCefic runs the Responsible Care Award competition, launched in 2004, as part of its effort to strengthen and revitalise the Responsible Care initiative and boost best practice sharing across Europe. This year’s Awards Scheme turned the spotlight on a number of excellent company and national association achievements, based on performance under one of the eight key categories that define the Responsible Care ethic.
