On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 football players traveled to Atlanta torepresent Davidson College against Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in theSouth. The Plainsmen had massacred their first four opponents, outscoring teams, 141-6.

According to one account, they were “big, quick, and undefeated” and heavily fa-vored in the day’s matchup. Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20 poundsless.

Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, outgaining the “Red and Black”240 yards to Davidson’s 91 yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offensiveattack through the efforts of running back A.R. “Buck” Flowers and quarterback HenrySpann, delivering a “bewildering array of forward passes.”

Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in the South that day, 21-7, withscrappiness that captured the awe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. They wrote ofthe “Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose small stature and ferocious style provedoverwhelming. One account notes that Morgan Blake of the Atlanta Journal remarked ofthe Davidson team, “No other team ever put together in these United States of thesame weight as Coach Fetzer’s team could ever get the verdict over the flock of wildmen from North Carolina.”

The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and it has been used ever since, replac-ing former, milder references such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and “Preach-ers.”— revised and rewritten from an account in the Davidson College archives

“I firmly believe Davidson repre-sents the ideal in college athletics andthink the success of Davidson’s stu-dents, both in competition and aftergraduation proves that,” said Murphy.“It’s true that Davidson needs intercol-legiate athletics, but intercollegiate ath-letics need Davidson even more.”

Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued severalmajor capital projects, including the cre-ation of the highly-innovative $10 mil-lion Davidson Scholars Program, andmajor improvements have been com-pleted in Belk Arena and at Smith Fieldat Richardson Stadium.

Murphy, the 2004 NACDA DivisionI-AA/I-AAA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year, served two termson the prestigious NCAA Division I Management Council, a policy-makingbody within the NCAA governance structure. He chaired the Division I-AAGovernance Committee and formerly served on the NCAA Division I Busi-ness and Finance Cabinet, the Division I Governance Committee and the Di-vision I Finance Committee.
