Computer Drawing (Gill)

Digital Literacy and Coding (Schiele)

Students will learn the basic functions of Adobe Illustrator through hands-on practice. A range of projects will provide opportunities for learning and creating. This class is great for students who love computers or those who love to draw.

This course is designed to introduce various computer skills related to Digital Literacy by being able to critically navigate many different types of technologies. Students will learn the dangers and incredible power of technology in our world. Students will also learn the basics and fundamentals of the JavaScript coding language and design a final project using the JavaScript language.

LAEF’s Course Descriptions: Acting for the Middle School Artist (J. Wallace)

Author’s Publishing Workshop (Conforti)

Beginning Ukulele (S. Wallace)

This course will expose young performers to the many facets of acting. We will explore and create through a series of exercises, ensemble building, and work with original as well as established performance

material. Students will gain confidence as individuals and performers while gaining a broad understanding of what it takes to be an actor, but, most importantly, they will have fun and pretend! Students will work together on pieces, which will be performed on the final day of class in a showcase presented to friends and family.

The “Author’s Workshop” is for students who enjoy reading and writing fun and creative stories. Each day, students will watch a short video about the life of a famous author. Following the video, students will receive a publishing packet to independently write and illustrate their own story! At the end of the course, students will turn in their completed stories, which will

then be sent to Nationwide Publishers. Students will receive their completed story in the mail beautifully bound in hardback! You’ll become an author and be able to enjoy sharing your book with others for years to come!!!

Students will learn basic fingerings, chord patterns, and simple songs on the ukulele. They will perform two songs as a group for parents and friends. Solo parts will also be encouraged. Students must provide their own ukulele.

Competitive Improv (Barker)

In this class, students will learn the basic techniques of improv comedy. Basic performing techniques as well as keys of improv will be taught. Students will participate in improv games that will assist them in thinking on their feet.

Ceramics For Credit (Carthew) **Please see HSFC Registration Form**

This class is designed to fulfill part 1 or 2 of the Fine Art section for the “A through G” requirements for transferring

to a UC or Cal State school. Students earn 5 units of high school elective credit as they investigate a variety of

hand building and wheel throwing pottery techniques. Functional and aesthetics based projects will be created

using electric, high fire gas and alternative firing methods not offered during the regular school year.

Fitness FUNatics (Main)

Master the fundamental techniques of drawing & painting while expanding your conceptual boundaries and developing your own artistic vision! Students will create

images to tell stories, convey information, and evoke emotions. In our Drawing & Painting class, students will be guided by an instructor with an artistic background. Students will learn techniques, create projects, and use processes that will allow them build a great portfolio. They will also have the opportunity to learn techniques from classical to multicultural artists from around the world.

Come out and see what fun is all about! Play games while learning about your body and improving your physical

skills in endurance, strength and cardio. In Fitness FUNatics, you will learn how to eat right and be active to maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout your life.

Geology (Awad)

Students will learn the physical structure of the Earth, both externally (atmosphere) and internally (layers of the

Earth). In this class, students will be finding latitude and longitude locations, reading weather maps, creating their own topographic map, and participating in a rock practicum lab.

Immortals, Monsters, and Heroes (Franzen) This is an in-depth and fascinating study of Greek and Roman immortals, monsters, and heroes. Why did Hercules steal Hades’ dog? Why does Perseus have winged sandals? Where did the Minotaur come from? What is a chimera and why did Bellerophon have to fight it? Let’s have fun looking at the stories, artifacts, and film versions of Greek

Myths.

Gearing Up for Geometry (Mendrin)

This course is designed for students going into Geometry or Geometry Honors in the Fall and introduces students to geometry topics. The concepts covered will help prepare students for success in Geometry the following school year. Students in this class will focus on logical thinking, parallel and perpendicular lines, right triangles, polygons, quadrilaterals, and circles.

Summer Online Health is an internet-based survey course covering the major issues in physical, mental and social health for adolescents. It satisfies the Health requirement for a high school diploma. Topics covered include nutrition and exercise, mental and emotional health, safe and healthy relationships, growth and development, sexual health,

substance abuse issues, and injury prevention. The course comprises a text, video presentations, news articles and scientific studies, interactive discussion groups and special projects to demonstrate learning. The course can be completed on an accelerated schedule of three weeks with an on-campus final exam, or on the regular five-week schedule with an on-campus final exam.

Secondary SEI 2014

American Political Tradition is a one-semester required course that covers the California Content Standards in American Government. As such, it covers features of our United

States political systems- national, state, and local. The intent is to provide a course that is conceptual and interdisciplinary in approach. While emphasizing political science, it

includes insights from psychology, anthropology, sociology, history, and economics.

Picture yourself as a visual communicator! With creativity and a focus on education, students will learn to capture

images to tell stories, convey information, and evoke emotions. In our Digital Photography class, students will learn from an instructor with a background in photography. They will learn techniques, create projects, and use equipment that will allow them to produce a great portfolio. *Students must provide their own DSLR Camera to use in class.

This course is designed for seventh through ninth grade students who will be enrolled in Algebra 1 or Algebra 1 Honors in the Fall. Students will be introduced to symbolic reasoning and calculations with symbols. Through this fundamental study of algebra, a student will develop an understanding of the symbolic language of mathematics. This class will focus on linear equations/inequalities, systems of equations, exponents, and graphing linear equations.

This course prepares students for a variety of academic and other situations in which formal presentations are required. Topics will include techniques of oral presentation and

persuasion. Students will learn how to research, outline, and deliver short, informal presentations as well as longer speeches. Students will also learn about the qualities

colleges value and how to strengthen their preparation for college. Students can become a stronger candidate for admission and increase their admission chances by mastering

the following topics: Academics, how Colleges admit students, your plan to get into college, and learning about the PSAT, SAT, and ACT tests.

While reading short stories, students will discuss character, plot, figurative language, and other literary devices.

Students will use thinking maps and small group discussions to deepen their understanding of the text. Through teacher-guided practice, students will write process papers for each story they’ve read.

Students will learn the classification of animals and how diverse the world of animals really is. In this class, students will be comparing and contrasting fossils, looking at different specimens, using the microscope to look at

slides, and participating in outside lab activities.

Meet our Highly-Qualified SEI Teachers!

Secondary SEI 2014

Henry Awad (Geology and Zoology)- Attended Los Alamitos High School from 1992 – 1996, Henry was a graduate with top

honors. As a result, he received a full-ride scholarship to CSULB thanks to LAHS. After receiving his bachelor’s degree in Biology, he was accepted into the credential program and received his professional clear credential within a single year. He then did his student teaching at LAHS and McAuliffe Middle School. During his evaluations, he received perfect marks and as a result, he was offered a full time position at the high school and never looked back. He loves LAHS!! After teaching for two years, he received his Masters Degree in Teaching with a specialization in Educational Technology from National University. David Barker (Competitive Improv)- David has a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from CSULB and a Masters in Educational

Administration from CSULB. He is currently the math Department chair and Los Al Live Improv Advisor. He has been running the competitive improv team for the past 5 years and has been a teacher for twenty years. Jeff Carthew (Ceramics- for Credit)- Jeff has completed his education locally with a B.A. in Art Education through Cal State

University Long Beach. After completing his teacher credential program, he student taught at Los Alamitos High School for ceramics

and three-dimensional design. Since that time he has taught ceramic GATE classes through Cypress School District, ceramics and AP

studio art for OCHSA, drawing/painting/AP studio art at Loara High School, and three-dimensional design and ceramics at Los

Alamitos High School. Jeff is currently the Head of the Visual Arts Department for Los Alamitos High School and teaches beginning

through advanced ceramics for 9th

through 12th grade.

Darlene Conforti (Author’s Publishing Workshop)- Darlene Conforti is currently a language arts teacher at Oak Middle School in

the Los Alamitos Unified School District. She has been teaching at Oak Middle School for the past 12 years and enjoys each and every day! Ms. Conforti has earned a Master’s degree in special education from National University and a Ph.D. in Education from Walden University. She recently began teaching educational credential and graduate night courses for United States University located in Cypress. She is passionate about animals and has enjoyed raising money through school recycling fundraisers, with the assistance of students and staff, for animal organizations around the world.

Lori Franzen (Immortals, Monsters, and Heroes)- Lori Franzen teaches Modern Literature, Mythology, and Thanatology at Los

Alamitos High School; in fact, she has been teaching English at LAHS for 22 years. Lori is a Getty scholar, with researching and teaching privileges at the Getty Villa and Getty Center. Most recently, Lori has won grants from the National Endowment of the Humanities to study Mythology/Folklore at Harvard University, and the Culture of Storytelling in conjunction with the University of Connecticut.

Gabriel Galland (Photography-Digital and Drawing & Painting)- This is Gabriel’s fifteenth year teaching art to 9th

-12th

grade

students. He received a Diploma in Art Education from California State University Long Beach, and took over 100 units of education at the University of Phoenix. His specialties are Photography, Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, and Digital Art. His goal is to help all of his students express their creativity. Gabriel looks forward to teaching Photography as well as Drawing & Painting, as these two disciplines have always been fun and fascinating to him. As a result, he offers a great opportunity for his students to experience their projects as real-world artists.

Stephanie Gill (Computer Drawing)- Stephanie is a graduate of the CSULB with a BFA in Graphic Design and Visual

Communication. She has worked as a graphic designer for 20+ years, and has been teaching graphic design at her alma mater for almost that long. She also tutors design students privately online through Skype. She has students in other states, and even one in Hong Kong! Herself and her husband are parents to twin daughters in the Los Alamitos Unified School District who currently attend LAHS as sophomores. She loves all things art related. In addition to design, she draws and paints, creates murals, and restores antiques. She has taught computer drawing through the SEI program several times and loves seeing creative young students do amazing work.

Jeff Heeren (Online Government)- Mr. Heeren has been teaching social studies at Los Alamitos High School for almost a decade,

and helped to pioneer the on-line government course. Before teaching at LAHS, he earned a BA in History from Whitman College, and an MA in History from the University of California, Irvine. He earned his teaching credential from CSULB, and when not teaching high school, Mr. Heeren is an instructor at Cerritos College.

Kipp Kahlia (Guitar Lessons)- Kipp has given private lessons at Accent Music for more than a decade, and taught guitar classes for

the Parks and Recreation Departments of Lakewood and Long Beach for 6 years. Her lessons will teach students how to enjoy an instrument for life!

Rob Main (Fitness FUNatics)- Rob Main grew up in Los Alamitos and attended Oak Middle School and Los Alamitos High School. He

began teaching in Los Alamitos twenty years ago. He currently teaches at Oak Middle School as a Science and Physical Education teacher. He is a graduate of San Diego State University where he played rugby and was involved in water sports, hiking and backpacking. Mr. Main is the advisor for Running Club at Oak and has sponsored Weightlifting and Science Olympiad Clubs while educating students in the science of health and nutrition, and the benefit of being and staying active. He has coached many youth sports, both girls and boys. A life-long fitness enthusiast, Mr. Main remains active playing rugby and basketball each week. He also leads other teachers in a fitness program, in addition to hiking, and running 5ks, 10ks, and half marathons on the weekends. He feels the most important aspect of youth activities is having fun while being active.

Allen Mendrin (Preparing for Algebra and Gearing up for Geometry)- Allen has a B.S degree in Biology and a minor in philosophy

from Fresno State University. He also has a Masters in Educational Administration. He has taught science and math at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Prior to working in Los Alamitos Unified School District, he was an assistant principal for 3 years. Allen enjoys teaching and loves challenging students. He enjoys helping them become the best students they can be, inside the classroom and out.

Bob Ostmann (Online Health)- Robert Ostmann has been a Los Alamitos teacher for 24 years. He has taught elementary school and a

variety of high school subjects including health, biology, English, applied science and video production. Ostmann came to teaching from journalism where he worked as a reporter and editor for newspapers in Detroit, Minneapolis and Orange County. He is the author of a book, Acid Rain: A Plague Upon the Waters.

Seann Schiele (Digital Literacy and Coding)- Mr. Schiele has been a teacher at Oak Middle School since 2000. After teaching sixth

grade reading, language arts, and social studies for 9 years, he transitioned into strictly social studies and computers. He has also been the Technology Coordinator at Oak for the past five years which has given him the opportunity to use many technologies. He attributes his interest in technology to his father, whom inspired him at a young age to become “digitally literate” and explore simple coding. He is looking forward to offering this course to share his passion for technology with students.

Sherry Ward (Preparing for Algebra)- Sherry Ward has been in the field of Education for over 25 years in mathematics and

counseling. She has four teaching credentials, including mathematics, business, computers, and counseling. Sherry has spent the past 8 years at several colleges as the coordinator of their Teacher Preparation programs, teaching Education courses, and as a college counselor to veterans. She is a published author and now owns a publishing company called Square Tree Publishing. She lives in Los Alamitos with her family and subs occasionally for the district. Jay Wallace (Acting for the Middle School Artist)- Jay Wallace is currently on faculty in the Theatre Conservatory at the prestigious

Orange County School of the Arts, where he has been teaching for the past 10 years. Jay’s teaching expertise ranges from Musical Theatre to Shakespeare to Movement to Camera Acting. Jay earned a Master of Fine Arts in Acting from CSULB, where he was a member of their resident theatre company Cal Rep. Jay continues to consistently work as an actor, both onstage and in front of the camera. Jay also maintains a strong connection to Los Al – as his wife Shannon Wallace is the Vocal Music Instructor at McAuliffe Middle School. As an educator, Jay seeks to not only inform and educate – but to inspire. Through dedication, discipline, passion, and the right set of tools, inspiration and technique seamlessly mesh and true potential is released. Shannon Wallace (Ukulele for Beginners)- Shannon is originally from Kansas and has lived and taught vocal music in California for

the last 14 years. She received a Bachelor’s of Music Education from Emporia State University and recently completed a Master’s in Music Education from Kent State University. Shannon lives in Long Beach with her husband and two children. She is passionate about music education and believes it is the key to unlocking knowledge in every subject and aspect of life. She enjoys singing and performing with her church and loves to play the ukulele. Mrs. Wallace feels very blessed to work in the Los Alamitos Unified School District and is proud to call McAuliffe her home.

Shannan Weeks (Writing and Reading Comprehension)- Shannan Weeks has been teaching in the Long Beach Unified School

District for the last seven years, and she has been teaching for ten years total. This year, she is teaching eight grade English Language Arts at Marshall Academy of the Arts. She earned a BA from Long Beach State University and received a Multiple Subject and Single Subject English credentials from Long Beach State University. In her free time, she enjoys riding her bike along the beach, spending time with her family and pets, and hosting a monthly book club.

Arnold Weintraub (Public Speaking/College Prep)- Dr. Weintraub has been teaching since 1966. He received his BA degree from

the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a double major in English and Speech Communication. He received his MA and PHD degrees in Speech Communication from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He taught English at every level, ranging from remedial through AP Honors. He coached Debate for 11 years at Omaha Central High School. He has also taught several courses in Speech Communication at El Camino College and Golden West College. Dr. Weintraub is an enthusiastic teacher and served as a walk-on coach at Los Alamitos High School, coaching the Debate team and the Mock Trial team.

Additional Information about SEI:

Registration: All registration will be completed on-line. Please visit LAEF4kids.org/programs to register for SEI classes. Registration will be on a first come first serve basis. *Early Bird Registration: 3/17-5/27 (Don’t miss out on the best deal!) *Regular registration: 5/28- 6/24

*Late In-Person registration: June 30th (onsite at McAuliffe only). **Please note there will be a $25 late fee per class.**

Beginning Fall 2013, an annual non-refundable registration fee of $25 will be assessed for each child entering a LAEF enrichment program. This fee will be charged when a child enters any LAEF program and expires at the end of the Summer Enrichment Institute.

Class Size: All SEI classes require 8 students minimum and will not exceed 17 students maximum. Drivers

Education and on campus for-credit classes are an exception with 8 minimum and 30 students maximum.

On Campus at McAuliffe: All secondary classes, grades six through twelve, will take place on the McAuliffe Middle School campus, unless otherwise noted. The SEI campus is open from 8:00am-2:30pm for classes. Students may be on campus in between classes. *There will be NO classes on July 4th due to the national holiday. Should you need your child to leave their scheduled class earlier than the posted time, please provide your child with a parental note specifying the date and time that they should be released. Cell phones aren’t allowed to be powered on during instructional periods, but may be used before and after classes. It is the goal of the Los Alamitos Education Foundation (LAEF) to provide a positive, safe, and secure learning environment for all students. To ensure that all students have equal access to success and a sense of well being during the LAEF Summer Enrichment Institute, we expect that students behave appropriately. Participating in SEI is a privilege and if a student has to be removed from a SEI classroom on more than one occasion, the course fee will be forfeited and the child will no longer be able to participate in 2014 SEI courses.

Refund Policy: Tuition is non-refundable unless LAEF cancels the class due to the minimum enrollment not being met. If your child registers late, misses classes, or withdraws before the end of the session, you are still responsible for the full fees of the session. Scholarships: Limited partial scholarships are available on a first come first serve basis. Applications are available at www.LAEF4kids.org/scholarships. Please email completed applications to [email protected]. **High School For Credit Classes: HSFC Registration forms will be available on our website www.LAEF4kids.org/programs as well as in the Counseling office at Los Al High School on March 25th.
