J-DREAM • J−ドリームYokoso! Welkom bij de negende editie van CAMERA JAPAN!Het afgelopen jaar was een uitzonderlijk goed jaar voor de Japanse cinema, met het hoogste aantal uitgebrachte films in decennia. Uit dit enorme aanbod hebben we enkele parels gelicht die samen een goede dwarsdoorsnede bieden van wat er op cinematografisch gebied gaande is in Japan.

Met ons themaprogramma, getiteld J-Dream, richten we ons dit jaar op de vreemde, fantastische en wonderbaarlijke kanten van de Japanse kunsten. Meer dan ooit tevoren vertonen we films waarin flink wordt gevochten, liters bloed vloeien of waarin het alledaagse plots op zijn kop wordt gezet door een onverklaarbare gebeurtenis. De programmaonderdelen van het themaprogramma zijn gemarkeerd met .

Maar naast al het filmgeweld zijn er ook ingetogen, komische en beeldschone producties op het festival te zien, bieden we lezingen aan en zijn er optredens van Cuushe en aus. En het bruist wederom in de foyer dankzij al de dansoptredens en activiteiten die daar plaatsvinden.

Yosoko! Welcome to the ninth edition of CAMERA JAPAN!The previous year has been an exceptionally good year for Japanese cinema, with the highest amount of homegrown films released in decades. From this huge supply we have selected some of the finest pearls, which offer a good cross section of what is currently being produced in Japan.

With our special theme programme, titled J-Dream, we shine our light on all that is weird, wondrous and fantastical in Japanese art this year. More than ever we are showing films with lots of fighting, where gallons of blood are being spilled, or in which daily life is suddenly turned upside down by an inexplicable occurrence. For easy reference we have marked all events related to J-Dream with in our programme.

But besides all the film violence there are also more contemplated, comedic and elegant productions on offer. Further there will also be several lectures, and live performances by Cuushe & aus. And again our foyer will be full of energy thanks to all the dance performances and activities that will take place.

CAMERA JAPAN 2014

Het leven van de 36-jarige Takashi, werkloos en nog wonend bij zijn grootmoeder, draait om vier zaken: pachinko, bowlen, tv kijken en rondhangen met zijn al even nutteloze beste vriend. Tot op een dag zijn halfzus Yuka op de stoep staat, en ze hem begint te pushen om iets van zijn leven te maken. Een surrealistische slacker-komedie over ‘niksigheid’, gefilmd in zwart-wit en gemaakt voor een appel en een ei door een crew van slechts vier personen. De grootmoeder in de film wordt gespeeld door de 96-jarige oma van debuterend regisseur WATANABE.

The life of 36-year-old Takashi, unemployed and living with his grandmother, revolves around playing pachinko, bowling, watching tv and hanging around with his equally aimless best friend. But then a previously unknown half-sister shows up, who starts pushing him to make something of his life. A surreal slacker comedy about ‘nothingness’, shot in black-and-white, and made on a shoestring budget by a crew of four. The grandmother in the film is played by director WATANABE’s real-life grandmother, aged 96.

WATANABE HirobumiWATANABE Hirobumi, born in Tochigi Prefecture in 1982, graduated from the Japan Institute of the Moving Image and was a student of

writer and director TENGAN Daisuke. His graduation film Hachigatsu No Karui Buta won the Film Lovers’ Festa Grand Prize. He later directed the Japanese-Chinese co-production Mittsu No Minato No Monogatari. Together with his brother he founded Foolish Piggies Films, named after their posture and their foolish attitude.

Komiek ABE Sadao – met stijlvol bloempotkapsel – speelt een man die zich gespecialiseerd heeft in de kunst van de ‘dogeza’; de traditionele Japanse spijtbetuiging waarbij men dient te knielen en zo diep mogelijk moet buigen. Met zijn Tokyo Apology Centre adviseert hij klanten die alleen met de ultieme verontschuldiging het vege lijf nog kunnen redden. Onder hen een arrogante jonge vrouw die het aan de stok heeft met een machtige yakuza-clan, en een filmmaker die een heel volk tegen zich in het harnas heeft gejaagd. Absurd en hilarisch: een van de meest besproken komedies van het afgelopen filmjaar.

Comedian ABE Sadao, sporting a wonderful bowl cut, plays a man specialized in the art of ‘dogeza’: the traditional act of apologizing by prostrating oneself in front of another person to ask forgiveness. With his Tokyo Apology Centre he helps customers who can only solve their problems by performing the ulti-mate formal apology. Among them is an arrogant young lady who has some serious beef with a powerful yakuza clan, and a filmmaker that has managed to anger an entire country. Absurd and hilarious: one of the most talked about comedies of the recent film year.

20-year-old Kaede is fed up with both her boring job and her boyfriend. So when she hears of the return of her childhood crush, Takuya, with whom she and her brother Ryuta were good friends, she is planning to finally tell him how she feels. But the mysterious and distant Takuya seems a changed man since returning from Tokyo, wearing a mask of some sorts. It takes the news of the pregnancy of Ryuta’s girlfriend, Yuki, for him to finally share his big secret.

TAJIRI YujiTAJIRI Yuji, born in 1968, started out as an assistant director for production company Shishi Production, which mainly produced Pink Films.

He made his own debut with Go Go Train in 1997, and won with Rustling in Bed the Japan Movie Professional Award. TAJIRI is a member of the group of pink film directors collectively known as the Seven Lucky Gods of Pink. He founded his own production company Boukenou in 2010.

De 20-jarige Kaede heeft haar buik vol van haar routineuze baan en haar vriendje. Dolblij is ze dan ook als ze hoort van de terugkeer van jeugdliefde Takuya, met wie zij en haar broer Ryuta lange tijd bevriend waren. Hopend dat de verliefdheid ditmaal wederzijds is begint ze veel met Takuya op te trekken. Maar hij is duidelijk veranderd door zijn tijd in Tokio, gedraagt zich afstandelijk en lijkt iets te verbergen. Het nieuws van de zwangerschap van Ryuta’s vriendin Yuki doet hem eindelijk besluiten zijn grote geheim te openbaren.

Sawa krijgt van haar vroegere zwager te horen dat haar ex-man op sterven ligt. Zelf wenst ze hem nooit meer te zien, maar ze besluit wel haar twee dochters naar het ziekenhuis te sturen om afscheid te nemen van de vader die ze eigenlijk nooit gekend hebben. Met een fruitmand (inclusief ironische beterschapskaart) en een fototoestel om zijn laatste uren vast te leggen, vertrekken ze per trein naar vaders sterfbed. Maar nog voor aankomst krijgen ze te horen dat hij al is overleden. Een droevig verhaal, maar met charme en bijtende humor gebracht.

A mother sends her two daughters on a journey to their estranged father, who is dying of cancer. With a fruit basket that says ‘get well soon’ and a brand new camera to take his picture, they travel to the hospital, only to find out he is already dead. While they would rather return home right away, they decide to attend the funeral. Despite the grim storyline, a charming little film about forgiveness, with lots of black humour.

Kohei is being haunted in his dreams by his ex-girlfriend Futaba, with whom he broke up a year ago. Through her neighbour Maria, he finds out that she has been murdered. Together they decide to kill whoever was responsible for her death. A delightful new entry in the wondrous world of Japan’s pink film, a term used for all kinds of genre films that include adult content. MAKI Mizui, whose directorial debut Kept is also playing at this years festival, plays the title character.

Een jaar nadat zijn relatie op de klippen liep wordt Kohei plotseling bezocht door de geest van zijn ex-vriendin. Via haar buurvrouw Maria komt hij erachter dat ze vermoord is. Samen gaan ze op zoek naar degenen die verantwoordelijk zijn voor haar dood. Verrukkelijke toevoeging aan de wonderlijke wereld van de Japanse pink film, een term die gebruikt wordt voor allerlei genrefilms met erotische scènes. Voormalig pornoactrice MAKI Mizui, wier regiedebuut Kept ook te zien is op het festival, speelt het titelpersonage.

Ken, een getalenteerde jonge hiphop-danser, verhuist naar Okinawa in de hoop daar wat geld te verdienen met straatoptredens. Maar al in zijn eerste minuten op het eiland wordt zijn gettoblaster door een lokale bende vernield en krijgt hij zelf een aantal rake klappen te verwerken. Een oude man genaamd Iwao Shinjo neemt hem onder zijn hoede en brengt hem de traditionele danstechnieken van het eiland bij. Wat Ken dan nog niet weet is dat de dans grote gelijkenissen kent met Ryukyu karate. Een lichthartige martial arts-komedie in de stijl van de Karate Kid-films.

Talented hip-hop dancer Ken moves to Okinawa, hoping to make a few bucks by performing on the street. But his first welcome on the island is getting beat up by the local gang of thugs. Nonetheless he manages to catch the attention of Iwao Shinjo, an old Ryukyu dance master who believes ‘a good dancer is also a good fighter.’ The old man takes Ken under his wing, teaching him not only the art of Okinawa’s folk dance, but also of Ryukyu karate. A lighthearted martial arts comedy in the style of the Karate Kid movies.

In een wereld waarin alle nucleaire wapens en geweren voorgoed vernietigd zijn draagt de Japanse politie enkel een zwaard om de orde te bewaken. Agenten moeten dan ook machteloos toezien hoe een stel mysterieuze blauwe wezens, vermomd als mensen, vanuit een andere dimensie naar de onze reizen om dood en verderf te saaien. Gelukkig kan de mensheid altijd nog rekenen op een elite-eenheid van vier vrouwelijke vechtersbazen, die onder de dekmantel van een schattige J-pop formatie over de wereld waken. TAKEDA Rina (Dead Sushi), die een zwarte band in karate heeft, speelt een van de heldinnen. Voor liefhebbers van ‘foute’ Japanse sciencefiction.

Sci-fi action film set in a universe in which all guns and nuclear weapons have been eradicated. Violence is still an issue though, especially since a bunch of mysterious blue invaders from another dimension decided to cause havoc in modern-day Japan. Luckily an elite group of four female assassins is there to protect society from evil. And to bring joy to the world as a cutesy J-pop girl band, of course. TAKEDA Rina (Dead Sushi), who has a black belt in karate, stars as one of the heroines. A film meant for people that don’t take their cinema too seriously.

Yukari heeft oud-klasgenote Ayako al jaren niet gezien als ze haar bij toeval in Tokio tegen het lijf loopt. Maar dan begint Ayako met haar treiterijen, die steeds ernstigere vormen aannemen. Wat er zich in het verleden tussen de twee heeft afgespeeld blijft lang onduidelijk, maar door constant van perspectief te wisselen laat debuterend regisseur SAKAMOTO de kijker beetje bij beetje de puzzel zelf oplossen. Een naargeestige thriller in bleke Europese stijl, bekroond op de filmfestivals van Tokio en Berlijn.

Ayako even helps down-on-her-luck Yukari by finding her a new job. But then Ayako’s friendly behaviour shifts to bullying, hinting at a troubled past. A haunting thriller, shot in the bleak style of European arthouse cinema. By continu-ously switching perspective director SAKAMOTO slowly lets viewers solve the puzzle. Tiener Nami maakt een op zijn zachtst gezegd zeer ongelukkige jeugd door. Door alles en iedereen in de steek gelaten komt ze tot de conclusie dat elk mens alleen geboren wordt, leeft en sterft. Voor zijn afstudeerproject c.q. regiedebuut aan de Tokyo University of the Arts verfilmde SAKASHITA Yuichiro een wereld die hij maar al te goed kent: die van luie filmstudenten die nooit een opdracht op tijd inleveren en arrogante professoren die iedereen de les lezen. Hoofdpersoon is Akira, een jonge assistent werkzaam bij het instituut waaraan de film zijn titel ontleent. Hij staat op het punt om ontslag te nemen als hij wordt gevraagd een diefstal door drie studenten onder het tapijt te vegen. Laat de ellenlange formele titel je niet afschrikken: dit is een bijzonder fijne komedie vol ironie, geregisseerd door een grote belofte.

For his graduation project and feature debut SAKASHITA Yuichiro decided to film the world he knows best: that of lazy art students that never hand in their assignments on time, arrogant professors that boss everyone around and incomprehensible bureaucratic rules. Vervolg op Kids Return (1996), de klassieker van KITANO Takeshi over schoolverlaters Shinji en Masaru. The Reunion begint als de twee oude vrienden elkaar na tien jaar bij toeval weer tegen het lijf lopen. In zekere zin hebben ze beiden hun doel bereikt: Masaru is opgeklommen tot luitenant binnen de yakuza, en Shinji verdient zijn brood als professioneel bokser. Maar beiden hebben ze niet de top bereikt, waar ze wel van droomden. Het zoveelste komische moordfestijn van IGUCHI Noboru, de regisseur van Machine Girl en Dead Sushi. Ditmaal worden de gruwelijkheden in gang gezet door een marathon die voor het gros van de deelnemers fataal zal aflopen. De deelnemers worden gedwongen mee te doen door een mysterieuze man die dreigt hun geliefden te vermoorden met een dodelijk gif. Maar dat is niet het enige waar ze zich druk om hoeven te maken, aangezien ze in een verlaten gebouw worden opgewacht door twee in bikini gestoken huurmoordenaressen. Extreem gewelddadige maar ook zeer amusante mix van Battle Royale en The Hunger Games.

Ze meten zichzelf een menselijke gedaante aan en gooien het op een weddenschap: de winnaar is degene die als eerste de man weet te overtuigen het goud af te staan. Maar er is wel een adder onder het gras: ze mogen pas weer in hun dierlijke gedaantes terug veranderen als één van hen wint. Het Turks-Franse regisseursduo GIOVANETTI en ZENCIRCI bewerkte dit stukje Japanse folklore tot een fascinerend realistisch drama, gesitueerd in hedendaags Tokio.

Okano Yuuichi lives with his demented mother just outside of Nagasaki. A handful of joyous and painful memories are slowly pushing her away from re-ality. Finally Yuuichi decides that he can’t handle to take care of her anymore, and puts her in a nursing home. Director MORISAKI Azuma, 86 years old and still going strong, shows us the closed world of dementia in a beautiful and touching manner. Thanks to lots of humor, the light tone, and the lack of sentimentality, the film never gets too sad or heavy. De 10-jarige Kazuya woont bij zijn stiefouders, met wie hij een moeizame relatie heeft. Als hij hoort dat zijn biologische moeder is overleden besluit hij eigenhandig op zoek te gaan naar zijn vader, die hij nog nooit heeft ontmoet. Slechts twee aanwijzingen heeft hij in zijn bezit: een foto van zijn strippende moeder en een klant, en een half opgerookt pakje ‘Hope’-sigaretten. 10-year-old Kazuya lives with his step-parents. When he hears of the death of his biological mother, who worked as a stripper, he embarks on a journey to find his father. In his possession are two items to help him in his search: a photograph of his mother dancing for a male client, and a half-packet of unconsumed ‘Hope’-brand cigarettes. His hopes are soon squashed, but hap-piness might be found elsewhere.

When a young, attractive employee of a cosmetics company is stabbed to death in the woods, the media is all over it. Reporter Yuji, ambitious but misguided, tries to solve the crime all by himself. A dead body has been found at the seashore of a small Japanese village by a young boy, Kaito. De pas 28-jarige regisseur TSUTA Tetsuichiro brengt de teloorgang op overdonderende wijze in beeld, met prachtig wijdse shots van de natuur, een kalm tempo en een vleugje magie. A small rural town in a mountainous area is threatened by modernisation and migration. Only the elderly and the stubborn seem to stay, while the young flee to Tokyo. Held van het verhaal is voormalig samoerai Jubei (Ken WATANABE), die een laatste maal de wapens opneemt als hij wordt ingehuurd om wraak te nemen op twee misogyne hoerenlopers. Moeiteloos houdt deze adaptatie zich staande tegenover Eastwoods meesterwerk, dankzij een broeierige mix van bruut geweld, wijde horizonnen en melancholiek drama. Must-see voor alle western-liefhebbers.

Remake of Clint Eastwood’s 1992 western by Japanese-Korean director LEE Sang-Il, who changed the setting from the Wild West to Hokkaido, in the far north of Japan. Ken Watanabe plays the Eastwood role, as an ex-samurai who decides to come out of retirement one last time when he is hired to re-venge the mutilation of a young prostitute. By mixing a great story and genre tropes with Japanese elements, LEE makes a film that is both wonderful on its own merits, and a fitting homage to the original.

De 71-jarige FUKUMOTO Seizo is Japans meest vooraanstaande kirareyaku, een zwaardvechter wiens taak het is om voor de camera zo spectaculair mogelijk te sterven. Serie van zes komische sketches waarin het gedrag van mensen in groepsverband wordt geobserveerd. Wat velen van hen bindt is het gevoel buitengesloten te worden, vaak veroorzaakt door discriminatie en sociale grenzen. De uitzonderingen zijn de fetisjisten die in een besloten karaokebar samenkomen in het een-na-laatste vignet. Door het dragen van een zentaipak (een gekleurde outfit van spandex die het hele lichaam bedekt) weten zij de vrijheid te verkrijgen waar iedereen van droomt.

Series of six comedic sketches that observe the behaviour of ordinary people in groups. What connects them is their feeling of isolation, caused by discrimination and social restrictions. The only exceptions are the fetishists in the second to last vignette. By dressing up in full-body tights (called ‘zentai’ in Japanese) and hanging out together in a private karaoke room they are able to gain the freedom they are longing for.

HASHIGUCHI RyosukeHASHIGUCHI Ryosuke (*1962, Nagasaki) is one of the few openly gay directors in Japan. His first short film A Secret Evening won

the grand prize at the PIA Film Festival in 1989. Three years later he made his feature debut with The Slight Fever of a 20-year old. All Around Us, shown at CAMERA JAPAN in 2009, was his first film to not feature any gay characters or themes.

Based on the video game of the same name from 2009, this gloriously over-the-top anime tells the story of the witch Bayonetta. She awakens after 500 years on the bottom of a lake, with no memory of her previous life. Followed by a little girl who keeps calling her ‘Mummy’ and a mysterious journalist that seems to hold some sort of personal grudge, she embarks on a journey to the isolated European town of Vigrid. On the way to learning more about her past she will need to battle hordes of bloodthirsty Angels.

Selectie van de beste korte animatiefilms gemaakt door studenten van de Tokyo University of the Arts, de oudste kunstacademie van Japan. De afdeling animatie werd pas in 2008 in het leven geroepen, maar kende gelijk groot succes: op het filmfestival van Zagreb in 2010 werd de universiteit uitgeroepen tot ‘Beste Animatieopleiding’.

De invloed van techniek op de samenleving is een vast thema in de filmgeschiedenis. Maar regisseur KITAKUBO Hiroyuki gaf er in 1991 met de anime Roujin Z een eigen draai aan door het te koppelen aan de toenemende vergrijzing in Japan en de druk op efficiency in de zorg. In opdracht van het Ministerie van Gezondheid wordt een computergestuurd ziekenhuisbed, de Z-001, ontwikkeld. Maar bij de eerste proefpatiënt gaat het al mis als de machine een eigen wil lijkt te krijgen. Eenvoudig getekend maar met een sterk verhaal legt Kitakubo problemen als bureaucratisering en automatisering haarfijn bloot.

The impact of technology on society is a continuous theme in film history. But in 1991 director KITAKUBO Hiroyuki put his own spin on it with his anime Roujin Z by linking it to the aging Japanese population and the urge for effi-ciency in health care. Trouble starts when The Ministry of Health commissions the development of a computerized hospital bed, the Z-001. With the first trial things go wrong when the machine seems to get a will of its own. With simple animation and a strong narrative KITAKUBO exposes problems like bureaucratisation and automation.

Omnibusproject bestaande uit vier totaal verschillende korte animatiefilms, geproduceerd door Akira-regisseur OTOMO Katsuhiro. Opener is het voor een Oscar genomineerde Possession, een visueel overdonderend kunststukje over een reiziger die in een verlaten tempel op een aantal magische wezens stuit. Afsluiter A Farewell to Arm is juist het tegenovergestelde van die film: een sober futuristisch verhaal over een groep soldaten die eropuit gestuurd wordt om een robo-tank uit te schakelen. Daar tussenin worden OTOMO’s liefdesepos Combustible — getekend in de stijl van Japanse houtsneden — en het spookverhaal Gambo vertoond. Een prachtige voorbode van wat de de Japanse anime in de toekomst in petto heeft.

Traditional animation meets cutting-edge CGI in this collection of four short anime films. While they differ greatly in style, they are all examples of master-ful storytelling. One of them is the Oscar-nominated Possession, a visually mind-blowing tale about a traveler stumbling upon unusual spirits in an abandoned shrine. Another is the wonderful Combustible, drawn in the style of Ukiyo-e (Japanese woodblock prints) and directed by OTOMO Katsuhiro (Akira), who also oversaw the production of the entire project.

Ieder jaar nodigt de Visual Industry Promotion Organization (VIPO) jonge creatieve talenten uit om enkele korte films te maken van 30 minuten, met als doel de nieuwe generatie van Japanse regisseurs te ontdekken. De drie korte films, die respectievelijk gaan over fashionistas, buitenbeentjes die om leren gaan met het verlies van een dierbare en het werken in een sweatshop, geven een indruk van wat de toekomst voor ons in petto heeft.

Each year the Visual Industry Promotion Organization (VIPO) invites young creative talents to create several 30 minute films. The goal is to discover the next generation of Japanese film directors. The three shorts presented here show a glimpse of what the future has in store for us, from a parody on fashionistas, a story about outsiders dealing with loss of a loved one, and one about working in a sweatshop.

Documentaire waarin twee Duitse filmmakers hun fascinatie voor utopische architectuur onderzoeken. Als kijker bevinden we ons in het International Conference Center in Kyoto, ontworpen in 1996 door de befaamde Japanse architect Otani Sachio. Met behulp van archiefmateriaal wordt teruggekeerd naar het belangrijkste evenement dat in het gebouw plaatsvond: de klimaatconferentie van 1997, waar uiteindelijk het Kyoto-protocol uit voortkwam. Een filmische zoektocht naar hoe idealistische architectuur onze toekomst kan vormgeven.

Already in its first images, Beyond Metabolism conveys a fascination for a utopia of architecture that imagines life in future societies in flexible, large structures, expandable at will. We find ourselves in the interior of the International Conference Center in Kyoto, which was built in 1966 by the Japanese architect Otani Sachio. Fragments of documentary archive material recall what may be the most significant event ever to occur at this place, the 1997 World Climate Change Conference. With the help from this building the filmmakers question our idealistic future.

Twintig jaar na hun laatste optreden vertellen de legendarische punkrockers van TEENGENERATE over hun korte, maar explosieve carrière. Slechts drie jaar lang traden ze samen op, tussen 1993 en 1995, maar hun invloed op de Japanse muziekwereld is nog altijd zichtbaar. En dat terwijl ze aanvankelijk in eigen land door de media werden genegeerd. Maar ook zonder die steun wisten ze een grote fanschare om zich heen te verzamelen. The legendary Japanese punk rockers of TEENGENERATE only performed for a mere three years, between 1993 and 1995, but their impact on the music scene still lives on to this day. While being ignored by media in their homeland they managed to acquire a huge fanbase. Their unique no-rules approach resonated with kids all over the world and set off a massive rock and roll tidal wave. Almost twenty years after their final concert they tell the story of their short but furious career.

De een is een overambitieuze jongen die slecht met verlies kan omgaan, de ander een professionele brandweerman die niet voor geld mag vechten. Maar wat ze allemaal met elkaar gemeen hebben, is dat hoeveel tegenslag ze ook kennen, ze altijd voor het allerhoogste blijven strijden. Het slachthuis van de familie Kitade bestaat al zeven generaties, maar wordt met faillissement bedreigd. Want de Kitade’s slachten hun vee, dat ze ook nog eens zelf fokken, nog op de aloude manier. Filmmaakster HANABUSA Aya documenteert het dagelijks leven van de familie met veel geduld en respect. Aandacht is er ook voor de rol die discriminatie in hun familiegeschiedenis speelt. In het oude kastensysteem van Japan behoorden slagers tot de Burakumin, verschoppelingen van de samenleving die door hun onrein geachte beroepen werden buitengesloten. Kitade Shinji, hoofd van de familie, is voorzitter van de lokale Buraku Liberation League.

The Kitade family has been running their small slaughterhouse and butcher shop for more than seven generations near Osaka, whilst also raising their own cattle. Director HANABUSA Aya observes their daily activities with pa-tience and respect, but also delves deep into the family history of discrimina-tion. In Japan, butchers belong to the Burakumin people, a community treated like outcasts because of their ‘impure’ professions. By participating in the Buraku Liberation League the Kitade’s are hoping to bring an end to these ancient prejudices.

IMAI Ryoko is een Japanse percussioniste woonachtig in Amsterdam. Na haar opleiding aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam werkte ze met talloze orkesten van wereldfaam, zoals het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest. Tegenwoordig is ze lid van het Amsterdamse collectief Project 128, bestaande uit klassieke musici en dj’s, en het vrouwelijke percussietrio ’Beat the Kitchen’. Tijdens CAMERA JAPAN zal Ryoko een improvisatie ten gehore brengen geïnspireerd door de festivallocatie.

’Shasinsiko’ is de naam van een tekening die het verhaal vertelt van Boeddha die zichzelf van de klippen wierp om zo een moeder-tijger te voeden, en daarmee het leven van haar kleintjes te redden. IWAOKA Tashi zal zich door dit verhaal laten inspireren tijdens een geïmproviseerde dans, waarin een staat van ’sutemi’ (opoffering) wordt nagestreefd.

IMAI Ryoko is a Japanese percussionist living in Amster-dam. Since graduating with distinction from the Conser-vatorium van Amsterdam in 2010, she has performed with many world-class orchestras and chamber-groups (Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Slagwerk Den Haag). She is currently a member of Amsterdam collective Project 128 and inter-continental female percussion trio, ‘Beat the Kitchen’. At CAMERA JAPAN, Ryoko will bring an improvisation performance inspired by the festival surroundings.

‘Shasinsiko’ is the name of a picture that displays Bud-dha throwing himself off a cliff to feed a starving mother tiger, hereby saving her cubs. Taking this story as a start-ing point, IWAOKA Tashi performs a dance improvisation. Using full and deep awareness of the festival’s surround-ings and the audience, he aims to reach for a state of ‘sutemi’ (sacrifice).

Als één van de Japanse budo (krijgskunsten) gebruikt Aikido rationele, elegante en vloeibare bewegingen om de energie van de tegenstander uit te schakelen. ISHIKAWA Satomi, 4e dan Aikikai en tevens Aikido-lerares in Amsterdam, zet zich in voor de verspreiding van Aikido in Nederland. Tijdens CAMERA JAPAN zal zij een demonstratie van Aikido-technieken verzorgen, in samenwerking met Aikido Centrum Rotterdam.

UMAMOTO Yurie (JP) is een choreograaf/kunstenaar uit Amsterdam. Douwe Smit (NL) is een geluidskunstenaar die zijn thuisbasis heeft in Antwerpen. Samen werken zij momenteel aan het kunstenaarsproject CEEPORT, met medewerking van andere artiesten.Voor CAMERA JAPAN Festival 2014 gebruiken Yurie en Douwe een spin-off studie van dit project als hun inspiratie. Het optreden is een onderzoek naar perceptie en herinnering.

Aikido, which translates as ‘way to pursue harmony of life energy’, is a form of budo (martial art) that rechannels your opponents’ power. While using rational, elegant and smooth movements, Aikido may nonetheless have a dev-astating effect. Amsterdam based ISHIKAWA Satomi is a 4th dan Aikikai and Japanese Aikido teacher, devoted to spread Aikido in The Netherlands. At CAMERA JAPAN she will give a demonstration of Aikido techniques, in coopera-tion with Aikido Centrum Rotterdam.

UMAMOTO Yurie (JP) is a performer/choreographer based in Amsterdam. Douwe SMIT (NL) is a sound artist based in Antwerp. They are currently working on the performance project CEEPORT, together with other collaborators. For CAMERA JAPAN Festival 2014 Yurie and Douwe will use a spin-off study of this project as their inspiration. The per-formance is an examination of perception and memory.

Interventions

Rob van der BIJL is een stedenbouwkundige met een fascinatie voor de stedelijke landschappen van Japan, in het bijzonder gebouwen die zouden kunnen figureren in manga-tekeningen. Hij werkt sinds 2008 in Tokyo en Amsterdam aan zijn ‘Urban Landscape’-project, waarin hij zelfgemaakte foto’s omvormt tot op manga geïnspireerde prenten. Een selectie daarvan zal onder de titel TOKYO ‘SCAPE getoond worden op CAMERA JAPAN.

SATO Ryoko, geboren in Tokio in 1972, heeft de halve wereld afgezworven – van Japan naar Kenia, Amerika en Nederland – om uiteindelijk in Antwerpen te belanden. Als kunstenares is ze onderdeel van het Japanse glaskunst-collectief Sandbox. In haar eigen werk gebruikt ze glas (en talloze andere materialen, van speelgoed tot haar) als capsule voor haar herinneringen en gedachten. Of zoals ze zelf zegt: ‘Ik transformeer – op het eerste zicht – onbelangrijke zaken in persoonlijke dierbare objecten.’

Rob van der BIJL is an urban planner with a fascination for Japan’s urban landscapes, especially buildings that could feature in manga drawings. Since 2008 he has been working in Tokyo and Amsterdam on his ‘Urban Landscape’ project, in which he converts his photos into manga inspired images. Titled TOKYO ‘SCAPE, a selection of them will be shown at CAMERA JAPAN.

SATO Ryoko, born in Tokyo in 1972, is an artist who has lived and studied all over the world, from Kenya to the United States and the Netherlands. She currently resides in Antwerp, and is a member of the Japanese glass art col-lective Sandbox. In her work, she uses both glass and other materials, varying from plastic toys to hair. In de traditie van klassieke kunstwerken als ‘Zesendertig gezichten op de berg Fuji’ van Hokusai, toont 36 Dreams of Fuji hoe de blik op de magische berg in de houtsnijkunst door de eeuwen heen is veranderd.

KOINUMA Yoshiyuki’s werk is sterk beïnvloed door games, biologie, science fiction en Japanse comics. Zijn creaties, variërend van olieverfschilderijen tot sculpturen, zijn surrealistische voorstellingen van fantasiewerelden en het universum. Tijdens CAMERA JAPAN presenteert hij speciaal gecreëerd werk dat aansluit bij de geest van het festivalthema: J-Dream.

If you think of Japan, chances are one of the first images that comes to mind is Mount Fuji. This sacred mountain is one of the most famous icons of Japan and has been a source of inspiration for many Japanese woodblock print artists. Following the tradition of 36 views by artists such as Hokusai and Hiroshige, 36 Dreams of Fuji shows different interpretations within the woodblock print medium, from the earliest impressions to contemporary images, of this magnificent mountain.

KOINUMA Yoshiyuki’s work is heavily influenced by com-puter games, biology, science fiction and Japanese comics. His creations, ranging from oil paintings to sculptures, are surreal images set in fantasy worlds and outer space. At CAMERA JAPAN he will present specially created artwork in spirit of this years festival theme: J-Dream.

Aan het eind van de Tweede Wereldoorlog lag Japan in puin. Geïnspireerd door de traditionele vormen en ideeën van de Zwitserse architect Le CORBUSIER maakten jonge Japanse architecten tijdens de wederopbouw plannen om zogenaamde ‘metabolische’ stadscentra te ontwerpen. Architectuurhistoricus Dave van EIJNSBERGEN gaat het in deze lezing hebben over de bijzondere invloed die deze denkbeeldige futuristische steden hadden op manga, en op de huidige generatie architecten.

Westerse lezers verwonderen zich weleens over de pratende kikkers en katten in de boeken van MURAKAMI Haruki, maar zo ongewoon is dat verschijnsel niet in de Japanse literatuur. Aan de hand van een aantal voorbeelden uit zijn bloemlezing Liefdesdood in Kamara en andere Japanse verhalen toont Luk van HAUTE aan dat fantastische elementen al heel lang deel uitmaken van de Japanse literaire traditie. At the end of WWII Japan was in ruins. Inspired by traditional shapes and the ideas of the Swiss architect Le CORBUSIER young Japanese architects made plans to develop so-called ‘metabolistic’ city centres. In this lecture, architecture historian Dave van EIJNSBERGEN will talk about the remarkable influence these imaginary futuristic cities had on the world of manga, and on the current generation of architects.

To Western readers the appearance of talking frogs and cats in the books of MURAKAMI Haruki might seem odd. But fantastical elements have always been a part of Japan’s literary tradition, as Luk van HAUTE will show in this lecture based on examples from the anthology ‘Liefdesdood in Kamara en andere Japanse verhalen’. Gerard JELLEMA is een verhalenverteller die zich heeft gespecialiseerd in oude Japanse sprookjes en legenden. Op de Kids’ Day zal hij twee keer enkele bekende Japanse sprookjes voor kinderen laten horen:‘Het verhaal van Momotaro’ en ‘Hoe een bosheks voor de gek gehouden werd’. Het derde optreden bestaat uit enkele korte verhalen voor volwassenen, met een korte uitleg over de herkomst hiervan. Kijk uit voor geesten, monster en betoverde dieren, want geen Japans verhaal is compleet

KISHINO Yuichi zal bij sommigen bekend zijn onder zijn alter ego ‘La Veuve Moustache’. Verwacht ditmaal echter geen als Franse weduwe verkleedde man die chansons in het Japans vertolkt. Want KISHINO laat zijn jurk thuis en brengt met de parels mee uit zijn omvangrijke en eclectische muziekverzameling, om ons ons de mooiste Japanse hits van vroeger te laten horen. Een genre ook wel bekend als kayokyoku.

Gerard JELLEMA is a Dutch storyteller with a passion for Japanese folktales and legends. On our Kids’ Day he will tell two well-known Japanese stories for children: ‘Momo-taro’ and ‘How a witch was fooled’. He will also tell some stories for adults. So prepare for tales of monsters, ghosts and bewitched animals, as Japanese stories are never short of supernatural elements.

KISHINO Yuichi might be known to some as ‘La Veuve Moustache’: his alter ego that sings chansons in Japa-nese, dressed up as a French widow. This time he left his dress at home and did some serious digging in his enormous and eclectic music collection to present you only the very best Japanese pop tunes from yesteryear, also known as kayokyoku.
