Christian Friends,
Giving all Praises to God! It is hard to believe that it has
been 22 years since the inception of the 1992 program! We
welcome you to the 2014 Christian Acappella Music
Awards, presented by NACAMA, and hosted by the Church-
es of Christ.
CAMA, had its beginnings in South Florida as a tribute to the
groups, artists, song writers and song leaders who proclaim
our Lord and Savior in song. As we celebrate over two dec-
ades of programming, you will find both, many seasoned
Artists, CAMA attendees who have supported this program over the years, and also a considera-
ble number of first time participants and attendees.
Brothers and sisters, in Christ, we really hope that you understand that CAMA is your program,
we created it, we have nurtured it, but it is really all about you as the artists and the attendees.
I challenge you as artist to go out and talk with your congregations, to explain how you lovingly
travel all over the place, representing them on a given Sunday.
And all that you would ask, is that for once every two years that they would set aside some funds
to assist you in attending a program of your peers. A Program that was developed many years
ago to help you become better at what you do. And simply, to say thanks to you and all of those
who get up weekly, after late night practices, traveling long distances, lots of not so great or cold
meals placed in Styrofoam boxes, all because of your love for Christ and the Church.
I have to believe that they would not mind helping you. I heard Jesus say on one occasion, ‘you
have not, because you ask not’.
And then the other thing is to make sure that everyone you know, also know about CAMA and
the great time that you have had every time you attend. Like us on Facebook, share our videos,
and just help us out by continuing your support. We are thankful to God and to each of you for
making the sacrifice to attend this years’ program
Please remember that CAMA began with an intent which was broken into three major compo-
nents: to give honor to whom honor is due, according to the word of God, by way of providing
recognition to those who are deserving, for their contributions to the furtherance of Acappella
music in the Lords Body.
Second, to provide a forum for Artists’ and members to come together and learn, encourage and
present their ideas and creativity, which helps each one of us help our home congregations and
fellowships grow stronger.
Lastly, and possibly even most important, to share with others who are not a part of the Lords Body,
in a way that would cause them to ask questions of our use of A cappella music.
While we have reduced the number of workshops this year, we are truly pleased by the quality of
our presenters and facilitators. When we look at the Musical backgrounds of the staff including,
John Pooh Malone, Andrew Daniels, Dr. Joi Carr and others, we are really in for a treat.
Many of you, often ask about the nominations process as it relates to how recipients are chosen. Let
me take a moment to explain. In the beginning, when we had very few groups traveling throughout
the country, we started our recognition by acknowledging everyone who participated in the program.
Over the years, we have tried a number of processes including voting and ended with sort of a self-
nomination system supported by a team decision making.
This was determined after we realized that the voting didn’t seem fair as it became more of a region-
al popularity contest than any type of artist recognition. Because we do not have information on
every artist who perhaps should be recognized and with the inception of the internet, you tube and
other technological advances, it is easier to have artist send information to us, than for us to seek
you out by word of mouth. We are looking into a member’s only system and will hopefully have it in
place by CAMA 2016.
And finally, it is our prayer, by our coming together, that discussions will occur which will ignite oth-
ers to question and learn more about our faith by way of understanding our use of A cappella Music.
As we celebrate 22 years and 12 productions of the Christian A cappella Music Awards, we hope
that you would join in with us in spreading the word all over the country, so that, if our God says so,
we will be able to truly grow greatly during the next 20 or so years.
Again, I am thrilled by this years’ festivities as I prayerfully transition my role into one of support to
Danzo Pratt, who will be assuming more of a leadership role in the future.
We thank all of those who have worked hard during our existence and may God bless you mightily
in your music ministries.

Brother Robert L. Ivory was born November 10, 1933 in Hardaway, Alabama. He later married his beautiful bride Rosa B and remained married for 62 years. Brother Ivory obeyed the gospel at an early age in Haines City Florida. He began his singing career at a very young age, somewhere around 6 years of age, and began singing with group members, Thomas and Carol Sparks, Will and John Spradlin sometime around 1963. It was around that time that they cut their first single, a 45 LP. Brother Ivory came together with Brother Elijah Bush in 1977 and formed The
Inner City Singers of the South. Early members included Bush and Ivory, Barry Taylor, James Taylor, Wayne Williams, Carl Smith and Emitt Roseman. Over the years, there have been many others who came and spent time with the singers, including Yolanda Snells-Duke, Stanley Johnson, Phillip Ridgeway, and Jessie Beasley. Many came and left, but Brothers Bush and Ivory kept the group going. Brother Bush, serving as Manager and Brother Ivory as Co-manager and also musical Director. He was known as the pitch and tune guy. Robert Ivory, a prolific songwriter and arranger, wrote such songs as - Please forgive me Lord, Jesus in my soul (the Deep Down Song), Before this time, Another year, No place like home. In addition, he arranged songs like, God said he would move and I’ll Pray. Having toured much of the United States, In 1997, they became Internationally known when they traveled to Paris, France. In 2004, The National Academy of Christian Acappella Music Artist’s acknowl-edged the great contributions of Brother Ivory and Brother Bush, with its high-est honor, The RUBAL Lifetime achievement award. Certainly, Brother Ivory will be missed by his family and his loyal fans including his fellow members of one of the greatest a cappella Artist to ever be assem-bled in the Churches of Christ, Brother Elijah Bush, Robert M Ivory, Marvin Wil-liams, Elijah Bush Jr., Chas Bush and Brandon Bush.

My earliest recollection of singing is of my Mother crooning at my bedside. When I was younger, I often suffered from earaches, and one of the ways she brought comfort was to sing to me. Music was introduced within a context of healing and love. Therefore, I love music. In elementary school, I remember clearly receiving tunes in my head and developing tunes from the music in my world. From the theme music on Little House on the Prairie to What's Happening to The Jeffersons to Hill Street Blues, I would record the music on my cassette recorder (from the intro and outro) and take it to my room and listen to it over and over again. I loved the emotion, the feeling, the chords, the various instruments, and, of course, the vo-cals. In 1983, we moved to LA. At that time, Los Angeles was overflowing with quality groups. I sat and listened to Renaissance, Agape, the Southside Church of Christ groups (SATB, Brother to Brother, etc.) under the direction of Willie Norwood, the Christianaires, and Unity and Cov-enant. I got my first shot at singing in a group in 1986. Jon Chatman was the director of an all-male group called Epiphany, and I became a member. I was elated to say the least. We sang all over Los Angeles. I even got an opportunity to have my own scene in New Edition's Earth Angel video. (See me at the last fifty seconds or so!) While I was with Epiphany, I joined the training program for aspiring artists, sponsored by AM 1580 KDAY. I rubbed elbows with the LA Dream Team and the Egyptian Lover, and I spent an afternoon with Russ Parr, who had an alter ego called Bobby Jimmy and the Critters. I had a blast! I can't leave this section of my life without mentioning my time at Carson High School. I en-tered my sophomore year in 1985. In my senior year I sang in the Vocal Jazz Ensemble and I was a character in the school's play, Grease. I loved and still love the music and the arts. In about 1986, Willard Crigler from the Normandie Church of Christ in Los Angeles worked with Gerald Lee in Terrell, Texas, to develop a program called Scouting for Scholars. Nor-mandie played a big role in bringing SwCC's Summer Tour out to LA. That year (1987), Chris Lee led the group. They had an unbelievable sound and their recording was good, which was rare at that time. Those college students combined with Chris Lee's hospitality piqued my interest and I went down to High School Day. I was hooked. SwCC, here I come. The year was 1988. The National Youth Conference was in OKC in 1988. I loved the huge crowd of young people from across the country. My favorite group was the Easternaires, under the direction of Sis Wells. I met Robert Guy and Brian Davis. (We all went to SwCC together.) Oh, what fun we
had! We wrote little jingles and sang them to the girls we met. I really enjoyed singing with those guys! Entering SwCC, I had to audition for a freshman ensemble. I made it in Gospel Quality, and Veronica Williams appointed me as Music Director. For two years I sang at SwCC, finishing out my time in Summer Tour '89-'90. I count my time in Summer Tour and SwCC as one of the greatest two-year periods of my life. I loved every minute of it. Going back to LA was the next step. The Avalon Church of Christ asked me to be their Music Minister and Youth Minister. For about three years (1990-1993), I developed my Youth Chorus. Keara White, who was a member of my Youth group, played a big role in making the youth group work. Keara was and still is a phenomenal talent. I am glad that I had a small part in bringing out her gift! Brandy and Ray J were also fixtures around Avalon and the LA area. This was right before Brandy's smash international hit, "I Want to Be Down." In 1993, Johnnie Wilder Jr. released a pair of recordings: his self-titled album, My Goal, and an album from Straight Company. I was impressed. Then I heard what Johnnie did with the Melo-D-Heirs and I was convinced that he had the skill set to help me put out a quality album. I had to work with this a cappella music genius! Felicia and I married in 1993. She immediately started encouraging me to put out an album. I found Johnnie, and Felicia and I planned for my first national release. We thought the project would cost about $2,000. It ended up costing us $11,000. We sold everything we owned, in-cluding our wedding gifts, to pay for the project. That first release was called Exodus and it featured Angela Pugh, Lamont Robins, Amy Johnson Walker and Terri Mays. "I'm Glad I Know You" came out of my time at SwCC as a staff member. The song has gone on to be covered at least fifteen times and is the #1 song in Johnnie's publishing catalog. None of that would have happened without Felicia's prodding, faith and selflessness. Then, for about twelve years, I didn't do much, musically. In 2006, I was presented with the opportunity to direct our brotherhood's national lectureship. This lectureship was meant to have a strong musical focus, and I achieved that. "I'll Go," the 2008 CAMA Song of the Year, came out of the lectureship recordings. I produced three albums and I released ten new original songs. The compilation albums were a huge hit. I compiled music from almost all of our top groups. This was the first lectureship in history where there was a fee charged for a concert and the first lectureship where multiple song leaders were featured at our mass weekday even-ing service. I had a great time and, by the way, caught a lot of heat, but it was all worth it. In 2010, the music doors began to open again. Over a three-year span, I did congregational workshops for congregations in Cincinnati (Gray Road), Chicago (Dr. James Mason) and Hou-ston, Texas (RF Tucker). It was really nice to be back doing what I love. (Some of the sessions I did with the Gray Road Church of Christ are on YouTube.) Just recently, I moved my family back to California. My plans are to get back into my music and do some more recording. I have dozens of songs! I feel that my best work is still ahead of me. Stay tuned.-- jte
Chris Turner , 2006 Chris Turner is The Voice. He is a Producer, song leader, song writer,
Vocalist, Minister, and lover and encourager of young people every-where.
Keith Lancaster , 2008 Keith Lancaster; the name itself is synonymous with quality, whether it is production, song writing, singing, or ministry. He is a change agent;
the man behind Acappella, AVB, Durant, the Lancasters, & The Acappella Company.
Harold Robinson, 2010 He has been one of the most sought out song leaders throughout the
Churches of Christ Brotherhood. Always bringing the soulful and sultry voice which seems to emanate from a deep conviction to singing.
Elijah Bush & Robert Ivory, Sr. , 2004 While The Lifetime Achievement is usually given to
an individual each year, there is just no way to sepa-rate these two recipients as they have provided great singing, Ministry, entertainment and blessed hearts together as a major part of the Inner City Singers
for over 40 years. Brothers Ivory and Bush have been a blessing to many with their ol’ fashion, but always timely songs.
Jesse Murrah, 2002 Jesse is perhaps the consummate entertainer, meaning, he is a pro-lific songwriter, Actor , Producer , MC and not to mention the group founder of Straight Company, Jesse has been blessing people all
over the world with his unique talent of being Mr. Everything when it comes down to music in general and Acappella Music, specifically.

for Christian Acappella music in the Churches of Christ. Founder and lead sing-er of the World renown group HEATWAVE.
Johnnie produced arguably, the greatest Christian acappella album ever in Straight
Company’s I Like It as well as many others including The Four Christian Stars, The
Melodiares, Joi Carr, and The Southside Singers.
Wayburn Dean, 1994 Vocalist; as a former lead voice of Renaissance and Acappella , Wayburn touched the hearts of many with his soulful sultry voice.
Sylvia Rose-Cobb, 1992 Songwriter; Music Directress, Sylvia has blessed the lives of many while at SWCC as the Director of the chorus and has
contributed even greater to our congregational singing by way of songs such as A Mansion, Robe and Crown, Restore My
Spirit and many, many, more.
CAMA has lost one of our greatest supporters in the passing of Brother Cleavon Crudup, of the Coliseum Boulevard Church in Greensboro, North Carolina. Brother and Sister Crudup had been supporters of CAMA from our inception. Always encouraging, to the Artists, the CAMA staff, and all of those in attend-ance at the awards, he will surely be missed. He was a dedicated song leader, member of the choral group, and just had a passion for all things pertaining to the Lord and His Church. On September 14, 2014, God called him on to Glory. May God continue to be with Sis. Crudup and family.
