Welcome to Louisville – an extraordinary city of spirit, soul and life!

Historic neighborhoods exist beside ultra-hip urban living; a vibrant medical and biomedical research community thrives while the experience of fortune 500 leaders and our energetic

entrepreneurs power our economic engine; families and singles come together through a myriad of festivals, attractions, dining and entertainment venues.

Louisville is a city where residents get to know their banker and their mailman, but also a place where people can discover adventure and find the unexpected. Louisville is a place of diversity, opportunity and education. Top-ranked private and public schools are brightening and enlightening the minds of our primary, secondary and post-graduate students.

The arts and culture in Louisville represent the most authentic glimpse into our city. From the internationally acclaimed Humana Festival of New American Plays at Actor’s Theatre to our wildly eclectic music scene; from the ballet and orchestra to the J.B. Speed Museum; from the Squallis Puppeteers to the legion of independent galleries that line Market and Main Streets, Louisville is a kaleidoscope of opportunity.

We are a river city owing much of our greatness and heritage to the rambling waters of the Ohio River. We’re also a city of parks—most of which are designed by Fredrick Law Olmsted whose amazing clarity gave us emerald green spaces offering retreat, play and a connection to nature, ourselves and each other.

But most importantly, Louisville is a place to call home.

2013-14 marks the second season for Jeremy Sheetinger, or Coach Sheets, as the skipper of the Golden Eagles. In his first season at Spalding, Sheetinger led the baseball program to new heights, as the team finished 33-12 overall and placed second in the SLIAC Tournament. It was the program’s first NCAA Division III postseason appearance. The 2013 SU squad also finished the season ranked in the top 20 in multiple statistical categories: 6th in hit by pitches (86), 10th in stolen bases (121), 13th in sacrifice sits (49), 13th in strikeouts (320) and 17th in strikeouts per nine innings on the mound (7.8).

“The potential for Spalding U Baseball is limitless. Based on our success last season, our enhanced facilities, recruiting base, and the university’s growth, we are ready to place ourselves at the forefront of NCAA Division III baseball,” Sheets stated. Established in 2000, Spalding University baseball has a proud history of five World Series Appearances (NAIA – 2002, 2003, 2005 / USCAA –2011, 2012) and one National Championship (USCAA – 2012).

A Frankfort, Ky., native Sheetinger was a three-year letter winner at Kentucky Wesleyan College (KWC), an NCAA Division II school in Owensboro, Ky. Sheetinger graduated in 2004 after a career as a corner infielder and designated hitter. While at KWC, Sheetinger was an Academic All-Conference selection, a member of the Dean’s List and was named captain his senior season. During his time at KWC, he helped the Panthers return to the GLVC tournament his junior and senior seasons and set the school record for wins in his senior season (31). Sheetinger began his coaching career in 2005 at Georgetown College (NAIA), specifically working with the outfielders and hitters, coaching under Erik Hagen. Sheetinger helped develop two All Mid-South Conference outfielders and helped the Tigers return to the Mid-South Conference Tournament.

Sheetinger then spent the 2006 season serving as the owner and director of Operations of The Sandlot Baseball Academy in Owensboro, Ky., an indoor training facility. During the summer of 2006, Sheetinger served as the Associate Head Coach of the Owensboro Oilers of the KIT League. In its inaugural season, the Oilers posted a 31-16 record, winning the KIT League championship. Sheetinger served as the pitching coach for the Oilers and had a tremendous impact on the team, as the pitching staff set a league for ERA. Sheetinger then moved to Brescia University (NAIA) for the 2007 season, where he served as the recruiting coordinator, as well as handling the hitters and team

defense. During his year as the hitting coach of the Bearcats, Sheetinger’s hitters raised the team batting average almost 50 points from the previous year. That year the Bearcats, set a school record .325 team average as well as a school record for fielding percentage (.953). While at Brescia, Sheetinger helped five position players earn All-Conference recognition and helped the Bearcats return to the NAIA Regional Tournament. Sheetinger then accepted the opportunity to come on staff with the University of Kentucky (NCAA Division I) baseball program. Sheetinger spent three seasons at UK from 2008-2010, serving as the director of operations/camp coordinator and working under John Cohen, current head coach at Mississippi State University and then Gary Henderson, current head coach at UK. Sheetinger handled a myriad of responsibilities for the program, including coordinating and organizing UK’s year-round baseball camps; serving as bullpen coach during games; assisting the coaching staff during practices; and playing a vital role in the day-to-day administrative duties of the UK baseball office. During his time at the University of Kentucky, Sheetinger worked with 32 players who went on to play professional baseball. After the 2010 season, Sheetinger accepted a position at Saint Joseph’s College in Indiana (NCAA Division II) as the head assistant and recruiting coordinator, responsible for hitting and infield defense. Sheetinger helped the Pumas to a .301 team batting average his first season and improved the team fielding percentage almost 20 points (.955) from the previous year. Sheetinger guided the development of three All-GLVC infielders, including two All-Region players and 2011 GLVC Player of the Year Sean Estand, who went on to win the 2011 Frontier League Championship with the Joliet Slammers.

A veteran of camps throughout the nation, Sheetinger is a sought after instructor and has either worked or directed camps in 35 of the 50 states, as well as Canada and the Dominican Republic. Sheetinger has also gained experience doing extensive work throughout the year as a lead instructor with DeMarini Top 96. He also has taken on speaking engagements at various coaching clinics including the Kentucky High School Baseball Coaches Association convention. Also, Sheetinger has moved into the professional speaker realm, giving motivational speeches for various program banquets, business conventions and his own College Baseball recruiting seminars around the country.

Sheetinger received his bachelor’s degree in fitness and sports management from Kentucky Wesleyan College in 2004. In 2009, he completed his master’s degree from the University of Kentucky in kinesiology and health promotion.

Assistant Coach / Recruiting Coordinator – Matt DownsA Louisville, Ky., native, Coach Downs will be entering his second season on Sheetinger’s coaching staff and is no stranger to the blue and gold. Downs, a left-handed pitcher, played for the Golden Eagle Nine from 2009 – 2012, where, in his senior season, he helped guide Spalding to the 2013 USCAA National Championship. During Downs’ career at SU, he saw the program embark on its transition from NAIA to NCAA Division III, helping the 2012 team set a then school record for D-III wins.

“We were very fortunate to keep Matt around after his playing career was over, and he has been a tremendous addition to this coaching staff,” stated Coach Sheets. “For only his second season, he has proven to be one of the best young pitching minds in the game and has a real eye for talent in recruiting. Our pitchers love his approach to the game, and it has shown on the field.” Last season, Downs led the Spalding hurlers to a 3.36 ERA, including ranking 13th and 17th in all of NCAA Division III in strikeouts and strikeouts per 9 innings, respectively. Downs currently serves as the lead pitching instructor at Legends Sports Academy in Louisville and also works camps across the country, with DeMarini Top 96, Coast to Coast Baseball as well as several local camps. Downs has played an instrumental role in the recruitment of the 2013 class, which boasts a great deal of talent that will help SU take the next step forward.

Assistant Coach – Tim Wimsatt2014 will mark Tim Wimsatt’s first season at Spalding University, serving as the program’s hitting and outfield coach; he will also have first base coaching duties during games. An Owensboro, Ky. native, Wimsatt accepted a scholarship out of high school to the University of Kentucky in 2006, helping the Wildcats earn their very first SEC Championship. Wimsatt then transferred to Kentucky Wesleyan College to finish off his career with a .309 career average before a shoulder injury ended his senior campaign. Wimsatt was also a

member of the 2006 Owensboro Oilers, coached by Sheetinger, who finished their inaugural season back in the KIT League with a 31-16 record and league championship. “Having one of my former players on staff is pretty special for me personally,” stated Sheets. “He understands what our expectations are from our players. He has been a tremendous addition to our coaching staff, and it will show on the field.” Wimsatt began his coaching career in Lexington, Ky., coaching at Lafayette High School, serving as an assistant coach for both the baseball and football teams. Wimsatt then accepted an opportunity to come on staff at the Okotoks Dawgs Academy in Okotoks, Alberta, Canada. As an assistant coach in 2012, Wimsatt helped the Black team to a semi-finalist finish in the Alberta Provincials. Moving into the head coach’s role for the Black Dawgs team in 2013, Wimsatt guided the team to the Alberta Provincial Championship and a second place finish in the national Canada Cup. Wimsatt has already lef his mark on the program, he brings a relaxed intensity to his dealings with the outfielders and hitters. He will also assist Coach Downs in recruiting.

Assistant Coach – Blake HuntA Louisville, Ky., native, Blake Hunt is entering his first year at Spalding University. He previously served as the student assistant coach at his alma mater, Charleston Southern University, in 2013. Blake will be in charge of the Golden Eagle catchers, will serve as third base coach during games and will assist Coach Wimsatt with the development of the SU hitters. “Blake has been a welcomed addition to our coaching staff” stated Sheets. “His passion for the game and confidence on the field is

contagious. He will be a great coach for us here at SU and we are excited to see where his career takes him.” After a very successful playing career at Charleston Southern University (CSU) from 2007 – 2012, Hunt stayed on as a student assistant coach, guiding CSU to their best record since 2005. Hunt spent the summer of 2013 serving as the bullpen catcher for the Louisville Bats, the Triple A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds.

Strength and Conditioning Coach – Sarah Clinton Sarah Clinton is currently in her first year as strength & conditioning coach at Spalding, and she will also assist with women’s soccer. Clinton, a native of Evansville, Ind., comes to Spalding after serving as assistant strength and conditioning coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). While at RPI, Sarah headed the lifting programs for men and women’s soccer, men and women’s basketball, and women’s lacrosse, and she also assisted with seven other teams including men and women’s ice hockey, football, men’s lacrosse, and track & field.

Prior to working at RPI Sarah spent four years as a sports performance coach at Velocity Sports Performance. While at Velocity Sarah worked with a wide range of athletes on speed & agility training and weight room technique, implemented Velocity’s internship program, edited core and lifting progressions into training programs and developed nutrition packets for athletes. Clinton also interned at the University of Louisville’s strength and conditioning program. While at UofL, Sarah worked with multiple teams, including rowing, women’s lacrosse, women’s basketball, and field hockey. In addition, Clinton has worked with Mid-America Volleyball Club and the Louisville Lightning Soccer Club. Sarah has also worked with multiple college football athletes to help them prepare for the National Football League (NFL) combine. Clinton earned her Bachelor of Arts in Movement & Sports Science from Purdue University in 2005 and is a certified strength & conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. “Coach Clinton has been a tremendous addition to our staff and our baseball program,” stated Coach Sheets. “She brings a wealth of knowledge, a true passion for development and boundless energy that motivates our guys in the weight room. We will accomplish our goals this season, due in major part to Coach Clinton’s efforts.”

Director of Baseball Operations – Lee DowningA Louisville, Ky., native, Lee Downing is entering his second year on Sheetinger’s staff and his third year overall at Spalding University. Downing handles a myriad of responsibilities for the Eagles, including game day operations around Derby City Field and major fundraising projects. Before coming to SU, Downing served as the assistant at DeSales High School in Louisville, Ky., during the 2011 season. “Unfinished Business”The 2013 Golden Eagles made quite a statement in their first “official” season at the NCAA D-III level, placing in the Top 20 in several categories while setting Spalding and SLIAC records as well. A few of these notable milestones include:

• A SU record for NCAA Division III Wins (33) • An inaugural win over a No. 1 ranked team (3/12/2013 vs Cortland State) • A 3-3 record against teams ranked in Top 15 • Offensive NCAA Division III rankings: - 6th in Hit by Pitches (86 in 45 games) - 10th in Stolen Bases (121) - 13th in Sacrifice Hits (49) • Defensive NCAA Division III rankings: - 13th in Strikeouts (320) - 17th in Strikeouts per Nine Innings (7.8) • SLIAC Rankings: - 1st in Hit by Pitches, Sacrifice Hits, Strikeouts, Strikeouts/Game and Fielding Percentage

Despite advancing to the final game of the SLIAC post-season tournament, finishing second in the program’s first ever NCAA Division III postseason appearance and posting three wins against teams ranked in the Top 15—including the No. 1 team in the country—the Golden Eagles were not chosen to join the NCAA Regional Championships.

With a final record of 33-12, Spalding was one of only 40 teams nationally to post 30 or more wins. “2013 proved to be a significant step forward for our program. It was our first time being able to compete post-season as fully-eligible member of D-III,” said Head Coach Jeremy Sheetinger. “Being told “no” by the regional selection committee did not sit well,” Coach Sheetinger continued. “The hurt and heartache in that locker room was intense, but the resolve that this year’s team has shown has been nothing short of impressive. They have the intensity, drive and work ethic to accomplish great things this season.”

In its fifteenth season, Spalding baseball has established a winning tradition of regional prominence, seeking to establish itself more firmly on the NCAA Division III landscape. Since Spalding’s first season of

competition in 2000, SU has advanced to five Small College World Series appearances (NAIA – ’02, ‘03 and ‘05 / USCAA – ‘11 and ‘12) with one National Championship in 2012.

2014 TEAMThrough aggressive and tireless recruiting, the Golden Eagles added 22 players to the 11, giving this year’s team a new look and a season full of promise and potential.

“Based on graduation numbers in the program, we attacked the recruiting trails to make sure that the 2013 team would give us quality depth at every position on the field,” stated Sheets. “We crushed our objective, recruiting talented athletes, who believe in our vision for what’s possible here at SU. Coupled with our experienced returners, this group has a real chance to set a high standard of performance for our program.”

This fall, practice for the Eagles was spirited and intense with multiple players competing for jobs. Returning players and coaches worked diligently to share the “Spalding Baseball” culture with new players, teaching them the team’s style of play and focus on and off the field.

“We do things differently than most programs, and our older players did a great job of showing the new guys the ropes. It’s such a positive atmosphere for everyone, and we believe that speaks to the high level of character we have in this program. As coaches, we could not be any happier with this of young men that we have the opportunity to work with every day,” stated Sheets.

This year, the Golden Eagle Nine will build upon the established staples of the program, by promoting team speed and athleticism, a truly aggressive mentality on all fronts and a commitment to established tempo and hustle.

“This group will be a fun team for our fans to watch play and for our coaches to coach. These men are eager to learn every day.”

The Golden Eagles will be introducing a number of new faces on the mound throughout this season. Because of successful recruiting, the Golden Eagles created relief in many areas, mainly overall depth and left-handed pitching, which they did not have in 2013.

“Pitching was the main focus of recruitment. We highlighted quality arms that fit our model for success on the mound and were able to land multiple impact guys that should give us a solid stable of arms to work with,” stated Sheets. “Coach Downs did such an amazing job organizing our pitchers and developing their talents.”

With senior Kyle Barbee, junior Ryan Mosby and sophomore Jarrod Messex leading this year’s pitching staff, the SU baseball team will have real depth, a number of different looks, balance from the right and left sides and flash athleticism on the mound. Barbee came on strong late in ’13 season and pitched strong this summer and fall. Mosby pitched in some big games last season, beating No. 1 Cortland State, while also earning SLIAC All-Conference and All-Tournament Team. Working through his freshman campaign, Messex, like Barbee, came up big at the end, pitching SU to their 30th win of the season and earning a win in the SLIAC championship game series.

The Eagle pitching staff will be led by former SU hurler and second-year assistant coach Matt Downs. Coach Downs led the 2013 Eagles to a 3.36 ERA, including NCAA Division III rankings of 13th in strikeouts and 17th in strikeouts per 9 innings.

“We are very excited about our pitching staff this season, based on the number of options we have but also the quality of arms. When we commit to being who we want to be on the mound, we feel confident in all of these guys being able to shut down opposing offenses,” stated Downs. “The fall gave all of us a boost to see the talent we have now and gave our team some real.”

OFFENSETaking into account the success from last season and recognizing the elements of the Golden Eagles’ offense that flustered opposing defenses, Spalding recruited new players who will add to a very capable group of returners.

“We showed a very different approach to offense, new for the majority of the Midwest and even for our players,” reflects Coach Sheets. “Our commitment to our shortgame approach, aggressive baserunning plan and understanding how to create pressure and score runs was bolstered by this recruiting class. This group completely represents how we want Spalding to be offensively.”Bringing back five players who hit more than .300 last season, in an offense that ranked nationally in several categories and first in many in the SLIAC, coupled with even more speed and athleticism should give the Golden Eagles a real opportunity to pressure opposing defenses.

“Our coaches went out with a clear plan to highlight the offensive players. You must bring speed and instincts, be able to handle the bat and show a commitment to aggressiveness,” stated Coach Sheets. “We are excited to see how this offense will take off and give our pitching staff relief to pitch aggressively.

One of the biggest improvements to the SU offense has been the addition of Tim Wimsatt, SU’s hitting coach, and Blake Hunt, who will assist Wimsatt with the development of the hitters.

“Being one of my former players, Tim has been a God-send for our players and for our staff. His attention to detail and true passion for hitting has given our players the time and energy they needed for real development,” stated Sheets. “Blake helps our players to be confident and aggressive on the field, and Tim and Blake work really great together. As an offensive staff, we are all on the same page and clearly see the potential in our offense here at Spalding.”

Building a championship defense starts with a first line of defense–infielders–and SU is confident of the defenders on the team this season. This fall, Spalding premiered a tough group of newcomers that reinforces an already talented group of returning players.

Back for their senior campaigns are Derek Ferch, a two-time All-Region performer with 45 starts, and Matt West, who had 43 starts. Add in SLIAC All-Conference utility player sophomore Kyle Whitlock and the Eagles have a great deal of leadership in this group, who will guide our younger players through the season.

“Anytime you can bring back your starting middle guys from a season before, you have to feel great coming in,” stated Coach Sheets, who oversees the infielders. “Derek, Matt and Kyle took on the challenge of leading a young group of defenders throughout the fall and their leadership will carry over into the spring. We demand that our infielders show certain qualities and these guys did an outstanding job of maturing a very talented but young group of guys.”

Spalding will look to build upon their stellar .959 team fielding percentage, which ranked them first in the SLIAC. A core group of players from the ’13 recruiting class gives SU real options and depth as we move throughout the season.

Speed will be the key to success in the outfield for the Eagles this season, and with a solid group of returners and talented newcomers, the gaps should shrink for the SU defense. A more fundamental approach and emphasis on communication helped this group take off this fall and gave everyone in the program much needed reassurance in the outfield.

The Golden Eagles welcome back junior Ryan Mosby, who earned SLIAC All-Conference nods; 33-game starter sophomore Ryan Selent; .310 hitter senior Kyle Barbee; SLIAC All-Conference utility player sophomore Kyle Whitlock; and big game performer and .329 hitter Sam White. Their experience is balanced by the newcomers’ energy and enthusiasm for Division III.

“Just like every position, we have real options in our outfield play,” stated Coach Sheets. “Building our team on speed, it most definitely shows when our guys get to the gaps. We’ve shrunk the field for our defense and recruited a pitching staff that will make us exponentially better this season.”First-year assistant coach Tim Wimsatt, who also serves as the program’s

first base coach and hitting coach, has shown his players a true teaching atmosphere, an attention to detail and a commitment to being great in the outfield.

“We were greeted this fall with a group that was ready to learn. There was an immediate sense of trust between our group, commitment to our principles in the outfield and an everyday approach to getting better. It was refreshing.” stated Wimsatt. “We truly believe we will show some real athleticism in all three outfield spots, and we know how that can positively impact our defense and, most importantly, our pitching staff.”

Depth was a major concern behind the plate last season for the Golden Eagles. Bringing back two quality guys and adding a third was essential for the team and for the development of the pitching staff as well.

“We place a great deal of responsibility and game management on our catching corps and this group has responded very well throughout the fall,” stated Sheets. “Having a young infield and also a young pitching staff, we felt like our catchers did an extraordinary job of leading by example and managing the energy on the field. It’s a big part of being a catcher, and we feel confident in our group here at SU.”

Sophomore First Team SLIAC All-Conference catcher JR Belt, junior Nathan Greenwell and junior transfer Jesse Herrman anchor SU behind the dish. In 2013, Spalding’s catchers were successful in throwing out 21 of 26 (81%) would-be base stealers; this percentage that speaks to the talent behind the plate. Attacking the running game will become even more of a focus this season.

This fall, the Eagles catching corps were greeted by first-year assistant coach Blake Hunt, who also serves as the program’s third base coach and assists with the hitters. Blake brings a very intense and passionate approach to coaching, and he has inspired our catchers to be leaders on the field.

“We are very blessed to have the talent we have behind the plate this season,” stated Hunt. “This fall, we challenged each other to keep improving daily, to be confident in running our defense and to be a pillar of strength for the pitching staff and for the coaches. We showed some real talent, working against quick runners, so we feel confident and ready to move into the spring season.”

St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

The St Louis intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) was formally chartered in September of 1989 at Maryville University of St. Louis and the first championships were conducted during the 1990-91 school year. The constitution of the conference is structured according to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) format and all member schools will be associated only with the NCAA. Member institutions have adopted an NCAA competitive philosophy, which in part states, the college places special importance of the impact of athletics on the participants rather than on the spectators. SLIAC member schools are committed to this end. Scholarships to SLIAC schools are based on academics and need only. There are no provisions for athletic scholarships. This helps assure that the student-athlete is a student in the purest sense.

The SLIAC is composed of 10 private institutions in Kentucky, Illinois, Iowa and Missouri. Members are: Blackburn College, Carlinville, Ill.; Eureka College, Eureka, Ill.; Fontbonne University, St. Louis, Mo.; Greenville College, Greenville, Ill.; Iowa Wesleyan College, Mount Pleasant, Iowa; MacMurray College, Jacksonville, Ill.; Principia College, Elsah, Ill.; Spalding University, Louisville, Ky.; Webster University, St. Louis, Mo.; and Westminster College, Fulton, Mo.

SLIAC institutions provide student-athletes the opportunity to compete on an equal and competitive level, thus permitting the student-athletes the opportunity to compete for conference, regional and national championships. Team championships are contested in women’s cross country, soccer, volleyball, basketball, softball and tennis. Men’s championship sports are cross country, soccer, basketball, baseball, golf and tennis.
