The Master of Architecture invites students to advance critical positions on aesthetics, culture, technology, and the city. An 8.0-credit M.Arch is aimed at applicants holding a four-year undergraduate degree or its equivalent in architecture. A 13.0-credit M.Arch prepares individuals from diverse backgrounds. The School annually welcomes international Azrieli Visiting Critics, who bring cutting- edge design and research to bear on the curriculum, and offers semester- long Directed Studios Abroad. A concluding thesis project seeks to make innovative contributions to architectural and humanistic research. The new Diploma in Architectural Conservation may be pursued in conjunction with the M.Arch. Together, our graduate students and faculty are shaping a provocative and socially-minded space for design and debate. We hope that you will join this ever- changing experiment. The PhD in Architecture and Master in Architectural Studies are innovative and comprehensive programs inviting students to engage critical forms of historical research and architectural practice. The M.A.S. is intended for students wishing to pursue in-depth research on matters of architectural concern. The PhD rigorously prepares graduates for academic and professional fields. Both programs aim at developing multidisciplinary approaches to individual scholarship. The Carleton Immersive Media Studio (CIMS), a centre dedicated to state-of-the-art and hybrid forms of visualization, provides an important base for doctoral projects. PhD students are supported by generous scholarships based on academic excellence. THE BEDTIME STORY

THE CONCEPT

PAST - PRESENT - FUTURE

NATURE PREVAILS

ONCE UPON A TIME, BEFORE THE OCEANS SWALLOWED THE LAND, PEOPLE LIVED IN CITIES BUILT ON THE GROUND. TREES AND VEGETATION GREW IN THE SOIL. LAND WAS PLENTIFUL AND VAST. BUT PEOPLE WERE WASTEFUL OF THE EARTH’S RESOURCES, AS THEY DESTROYED THE LAND. PEOPLE LIVED BEYOND THE MEANS OF THE EARTH. SLOWLY THE SOILS BECAME TAINTED, THE SKIES BECAME POLLUTED, AND THE WATER BECAME CONTAMINATED. THE GLOBAL CLIMATE BEGAN TO CHANGE FOR THE WORST. WITH EACH PASSING YEAR, THE TEMPERATURES GREW HIGHER, THE OCEANS LEVELS ROSE, THE GLACIERS MELTED, AND THE SUN’S RADIATION DRIED UP THE SOIL.

AT FIRST THE LAND AROUND THE EQUATOR WAS HIT THE HARDEST. THE TEM-PERATURES IN THESE AREAS GOT TOO HOT TO BARE. RESIDENTS SAW THEIR LAND DIMINISHED AS OCEAN LEVELS ROSE CONSUMING THEIR HOMES AND PROPERTY. THE PEOPLE QUICKLY STARTED TO MIGRATE TOWARDS THE NORTH. THE PLACES IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE MOVING TOWARDS THE NORTH POLE EXPERIENCED MILDER TEMPERATURES. AND AS THE OTHER PLACES BE-CAME BARREN AND INTOLERABLE, THE NORTH BECAME TROPICAL AND WARM. LAND QUICKLY BECAME VALUABLE ASSETS AS TUNDRAS BECAME FORESTS. THE POPULATIONS ON THESE MORSELS OF LAND BECAME DENSE AND NEW HOUSING HAD TO QUICKLY BE CONSTRUCTED TO ACCOMMODATE THE GROWTH OF THE PEOPLE.

THE SCARRING OF THE LANDSCAPE CAUSED BY THE DIAMOND PITS PRESENTS US WITH PROBLEMS OF HOUSING FOR THE MINING WORKERS AND ULTIMATE-LY HEALING THE LANDSCAPE WHEN THE LIFESPAN OF THE MINES END. THE PITS ARE PLANTED WITH HOUSING TOWERS WHICH ARE DESIGNED TO HAVE HOUSING UNITS PLUGGED AND GROW IN TIME. AS THE TOWERS REACH MA-TURITY, THE SITE IS WATERED BY THE COLLOSAL FLOOD AND RESIDENTS ARE ALLOWED TO DRIFT AND POLLINATE NEW TERRITORIES. NATURE ULTIMATELY PREVAILS AND LAND REEMERGES. RESIDENTS ARE NOW ABLE TO POPULATE THESE NEW LANDS.

IN THE NORTH, THERE WERE LARGE SCARS IN THE LANDSCAPE WHERE PEO-PLE DUG OUT THE EARTH IN SEARCH OF DIAMONDS. WORKERS IN THESE DIAMOND PITS WERE HOUSED IN LARGE STRUCTURES CONSTRUCTED IN THE GROUND. THESE BUILDINGS ALLOWED THE WORKERS TO LIVE ON SITE. THEY WOULD EACH RECEIVE A DWELLING MADE FROM SHIPPING CONTAINERS THAT PLUGGED INTO A MEGA STRUCTURE. A CENTRAL CORE ALLOWED TRANSPOR-TATION UP AND DOWN, AND TO AND FROM THE MINE. THE FRAMEWORK ALSO ALLOWED FOR INTERIOR PUBLIC SPACES WHERE WORKERS COULD GATHER. BUT WHEN THE PEOPLE STARTED TO MOVE UP NORTH, THE MINES CEASED TO EXPEL ANYMORE STONES. THE MINES’ LIFESPANS HAD COME TO AN END AND THE WORKERS SLOWLY TURNED TO OTHER OPPORTUNITIES.

HOWEVER, THESE MEGA STRUCTURES REMAINED IN PLACE. AN OPPORTU-NITY PRESENTED ITSELF TO CONTINUE TO USE THESE STRUCTURES AS HOUS-ING FOR THE NEW MIGRANTS. SHIPPING CONTAINERS WERE COLLECTED AND MANUFACTURED INTO HOUSING MODULES WHICH WERE QUICKLY INSERTED INTO THE FRAMEWORK OF THE STRUCTURE. THESE STRUCTURES GREW TO BE-COME CITIES AND METROPOLISES EQUIPPED WITH PUBLIC FORUMS, SCHOOLS, BUSINESSES, AND ENTERTAINMENT VENUES. MORE AND MORE STRUCTURES WERE BEING BUILT TO ACCOMMODATE THE HIGH DEMAND DUE TO THE INFLUX OF PEOPLE. THESE CITIES WERE POWERED BY ENERGY FROM WATER AND SUNLIGHT. THE NEW SUN CATALYTIX TECHNOLOGY MIMICKED THE NATURAL ABILITY OF A LEAF TO CONVERT SUNLIGHT INTO STORABLE ENERGY.

PEOPLE KNEW THAT CLIMATE CHANGE WOULD EVENTUALLY CAUSE THE NORTH TO FACE THE SAME FATE AS THE PLACES ALONG THE EQUATOR. THUS THE MEGA STRUCTURES WERE ADAPTED TO A POSSIBLE FUTURE WHERE OCEANS WOULD TAKE OVER AND LAND BECAME A THING OF THE PAST. THEY WERE EQUIPPED WITH FLOATATION BASES AND PROPELLERS. PARTS OF THE SKIN OF THE TOWER WERE MODIFIED AS PLATFORMS AND TRANSPORTATION HUBS.

THE EARTHQUAKES AND HURRICANES THEN STARTED TO CAUSE TSUNAMIS AND CATASTROPHIC FLOODING. THESE EVENTS PERSISTED FOR FORTY DAYS AND FORTY NIGHTS. THE PEOPLE ABOARD THE ONCE DIAMOND MINE HOUS-ING TOWERS SURVIVED THE CATACLYSMIC EVENTS BY PURIFYING THE SEA WA-TER AND HARNESSING THE SUN’S LIGHT. THESE CITIES FLOATED ABOUT THE EARTH FOR A HUNDRED DAYS UNTIL THE OCEAN LEVELS STARTED TO RECEDE. WITHIN THE NEXT FEW YEARS PLANTS STARTED TO GROW ON THE STRUCTURES OF THE CITIES. NATURE EVENTUALLY BEGAN TO PREVAIL AGAINST THE DISAS-TERS. LAND SLOWLY EMERGED AND PEOPLE BEGAN TO RECONSTRUCT THEIR HOMES ON SOIL ONCE MORE.

DIAMOND MINES AROUND THE WORLD PROVIDE JOBS FOR THOU-SANDS OF WORKERS AND PRODUCE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS FOR THE FINE JEWELLERY INDUSTRY. MINING OPERATIONS USED TO EXTRACT THE PRECIOUS STONES INCLUDE OPEN PIT AND UNDERGROUND SYS-TEMS. IN CANADA WORKERS AT THE DIAMOND MINES IN THE NORTH-WEST TERRITORIES LIVE IN TRAILERS BROUGHT ON SITE. NEW DWELL-INGS FOR THE WORKERS SHOULD BE PROPOSED TO PROVIDE FOR BETTER LIVING CONDITIONS.

CLIMATE CHANGE IS HAPPENING AND THE EARTH IS WARMING. AVER-AGE TEMPERATURES HAVE RISEN BY 1.4 DEGREES F OVER THE PAST CENTURY AND PROJECTIONS HAVE THE EARTH`S TEMPERATURE RIS-ING ANOTHER 2 TO 11.5 DEGREES F OVER THE NEXT CENTURY. SMALL CHANGES IN THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF THE PLANET CAN TRANS-LATED TO CHANGES IN THE WEATHER AND CLIMATE. MANY PLACES HAVE SEEN FLOODING, DROUGHTS, AND SEVERE HEAT WAVES. THE ICE CAPS ARE MELTING AND SEA LEVELS HAVE RISEN.

WE MIGHT BE FACING A GLOBAL CRISIS AS POSSIBLE FLOODING CAN SUBMERGE OUR CITIES AND TOWNS. PLANNING FOR A CATASTROPHIC FLOOD CAN SAVE OUR CIVILIZATION.

SHIPPING CONTAINERS ARE IDEAL MODULES TO USE FOR PREMANU-FACTURED HOUSING. THE CONTAINERS ARE ABUNDANT AND STRONG. THEY ARE EASILY STACKED AND IS EASILY TRANSPORTED. ARK CITY IMPLEMENTS THESE CONTAINERS AS HOUSING MODULES FOR MI-GRANTS INTO THE FLOATING CITIES.
