2014

Dear Friends,The Epilepsy Association embarked on an initiative a few years ago directed at the ongoing challenge of raising awareness of epilepsy—our Mural Project. The idea behind the project was to generate community dialogue about epilepsy and create a piece of art for the community at large that would provide a glimpse into the life experiences of those affected by epilepsy. In 2014, our beautiful 8’ high by 48’ wide public mural (Beyond the Storm) by artist Katherine Chilcote, was completed and hung on the exterior wall of the agency office building located on Prospect Avenue. The mural represents many voices of those in the community who came together to describe and develop images that could portray the journey of epilepsy. The imagery for the mural was crafted around the themes of healing, overcoming difficulty, and hope.

2014 concluded the agency’s 2012-14 strategic plan. We served more people and raised more funds for services but the challenge of raising awareness of epilepsy within the greater community continues for us. There was an overwhelming interest from agency staff and the Board of Trustees as we discussed our 2015–17 plans to use the mural as an important tool to help achieve this end. It is our desire to elevate the utility of the mural and use its imagery as a vehicle that combines art with education, facilitates dialogue about epilepsy and builds a greater awareness and understanding of the disorder.

2014 was also the first full year for our Kids and Family program. This service brought us back to our roots by re-establishing direct services to support parents and kids managing an epilepsy diagnosis. Our P.I.K.E.S. group, which stands for Parents Inspiring Kids with Epilepsy & Seizure Disorders, is a monthly parent support group that was established to allow parents to meet others dealing with similar issues—to share hopes, dreams and struggles and to get and give support to each other. We look forward to seeing this program grow.

The Epilepsy Association is the only community-based provider of social services for adults who have epilepsy and a mental health diagnosis nationally. In 2014 we recommitted our efforts to providing care to our adult population in need of specialized case management services. We increased the number of new clients to this service by 25% over 2013.

Raising awareness and building community is not an easy task to accomplish. Our dedicated and loyal volunteers were up to the task and through their on-going efforts to help people with seizure disorders; the Association was able to grow agency programs. We could not be where we are today without the epilepsy community assisting the agency and each other.

The Epilepsy Association was established more than 40 years ago. Throughout these years we have witnessed numerous clients and families, exhibit tremendous courage and perseverance in dealing with what epilepsy has brought to them. We look forward to more years of service in the community as our job is far from complete. Thank you for your continued support of the agency and our services. We look forward to another exciting year and we hope you will join us for the next chapter!

Regards,

Peter A. Nelson Kelley S. Needham

About the Epilepsy AssociationThe Association was started in the mid-1950s by parents of children with epilepsy, under the name Parents Crusade Against Epilepsy. It later became the Committee of Epilepsy of the Family Health Association. In 1972, the Committee on Epilepsy became an independent agency supported by funding from the Cuyahoga County United Way Services.

The agency is licensed by the Ohio Department of Mental Health, is a funded agency of United Way Services, and is accredited by the Commission of Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). CARF is an international, independent, nonprofit accreditor of human service providers, and CARF-accredited service providers meet the highest national and international standards of quality. The agency has held this CARF distinction for 29 years.

The staff of 8 professionals, along with many volunteers, provide the numerous services of the Epilepsy Association.

Our Mission and PurposeMission: For children, adults and families in Northeast Ohio impacted by epilepsy we will raise awareness in the community, provide education, advocacy and direct services that lead to an increased understanding of the disorder and to better management of the condition, resilience, personal fulfillment, independence and the ability to contribute meaningfully to the community.

Purpose Statement: We believe education and awareness are imperative to treatment, acceptance, equitable division of resources and the inherent right of every individual impacted by epilepsy to lead a happy, healthy and productive life.

20142

In June 2014, Robert Burtin received the client achievement award at the Association’s Annual Meeting. Robert came to the Epilepsy Association in January 2013 through our Information and Referral program and soon became a client in our Case Management program. Robert’s epilepsy and mental health symptoms were creating barriers and increased challenges in his life and he needed support.

Robert struggled keeping eye contact, finishing thoughts, and had significant memory difficulties. His anxiety kept him from doing daily tasks and having interactions with other people. He lost the motivation to do things that he previously loved. His symptoms were so extreme it caused him to be unable to work.

Despite all his struggles Robert continued to diligently work with his Epilepsy Association case manager and quickly began making process. He was put on appropriate medication and later was approved to return to work. Robert was able to obtain and maintain medical benefits and social security disability benefits. He has shown great strides in independence by taking control of his life despite living with epilepsy and mental health diagnosis.

Robert has blossomed in the short time he has been with the Epilepsy Association. He is an inspiration and a magnificent example of what results can come from our Case Management program.
