Our School Context

Allendale Primary School opened in 1962 and is situated in the centre of Geraldton, Western Australia. The school was built on land, formally used as tomato gardens, donated by the local Allen family. Our school is dedicated to providing an innovative, contemporary and outstanding learning environment for our students. We were selected to become an Independent Public School in 2015. The school is part of the Geraldton Network of schools. We are committed to providing a safe and happy learning

environment in which we strive to ensure that every student is a successful student and every teacher is a highly effective teacher. We take pride in ensuring that the learning needs of all students are carefully considered and appropriate curriculum adjustments are made to ensure their success. Allendale Primary School continues to develop and strengthen its strong reputation for the quality of its teaching and learning programs, the commitment and professionalism of its staff, the innovative and stimulating physical environment and its focus in the individual child. Currently our school enrolment is 370 with approximately 90 students being aboriginal. We enjoy an increase in students having English as their Second Language. This multi- cultural blend of the families attending the school contributes to a well developed sense of shared community. During 2014 students with special needs were in mainstream classes at all year levels participating in inclusive learning environments. Education assistant support was provided to students with special needs and students from an ESL background. The campus at Allendale Primary is spacious and provides many learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. All teaching and learning environments are air cooled including four teaching blocks, a state- of -the art vibrant library, a well presented spacious school hall including a kitchen area, specialist visual arts facility, music room and administration. Additional school and community facilities include a large oval, basketball courts and cricket nets. The school hall is well used by community sporting groups including karate, dancing and personal trainers.

Independent Public School After months of community consultation and planning in 2014, Allendale Primary School became an Independent Public School. The school community was delighted to receive the official notification. School Council chair Mrs Kylie Turner and Principal Lisa Criddle attended professional learning in Perth in September 2014 as part of the official launch of the new IPS schools for 2015. Premier Colin Barnett and Minister Peter Collier welcomed new IPS schools for 2015.

Australian Curriculum

In 2014 teachers concentrated on the implementation of the Australian Curriculum in English, Maths, Science and History. Allendale hosted professional learning on its school site in the school hall for the Geraldton Network supporting teachers in the Australian Curriculum implementation. Several staff are actively involved in leading curriculum and early childhood at a Network level. Additionally staff provided leadership and direction for colleagues after attending ipad professional learning.

Midwest Education Awards The Allendale school community congratulated Miss Briggs-Killick for being nominated for Midwest Education Awards in November. Miss Briggs-Killick was nominated by the school for her excellence and innovation in teaching our kindergarten students. Business, Operational and Learning Plans The School Development Plan 2014 included strategic and operational plans which outlined student achievement improvement targets and specified areas for improvement and how the improvement would be measured. It included both academic and non -academic focus areas. Judgements were made about the effectiveness of key strategies with staff involved in reviewing plans, targets and data. Operational plans detailed implementation strategies in key operational areas with the whole staff involved in ongoing self- assessment of these strategies as they applied to different areas of the school. Learning Area plans were structured around a twelve month cycle of review, development and implementation. Staff worked collaboratively in teams to review curriculum areas and used classroom and whole school data and assessment to review student achievements and performance. In second semester all operational and strategic plans were reviewed at staff meetings and also with the school council to enable a review of the effectiveness of the schools performance in preparation for the 2015 planning cycle. Evidence based reflection and feedback from staff including curriculum leaders provided clear direction and continuity for the Focus Areas for the new plan.

Official Library Opening

It was with great excitement that our library was officially opened in July by the Minister of Education Mr Peter Collier. At a special assembly, Mr Collier joined by Regional Executive Director Mrs Lesley Street and invited guests joined the school to celebrate the library opening. Mr Collier spoke to the students and the school community about the importance of reading every night and issued all

students with a challenge to read every night. He also asked our students to thank their teachers once a week to show gratitude for their efforts in the classroom. Our students celebrated in the afternoon with a sausage sizzle and bouncy castle as part of our library celebrations. The P&C supported this event and thanks to staff who helped with the sausage sizzle.

New school uniform

A new polo shirt was designed and introduced in 2014. Parents supported our whole school promotion of the new school shirt and the new shorts. Throughout the year the majority of the parents supported the new uniform. The Year 6/7 students also enjoyed wearing a leavers jacket which symbolised their final year in primary school.

School Leaders

It is with much excitement that we announced our Year 6/7 Leaders for 2014. The Year 6 students have been included as part of the student leadership team. All students presented a speech outlining their commitment to leadership. The speeches were of a high quality and we were very proud of every student who presented one. Our school leadership program allows for all Year 6/7 students to earn points in their logbooks. Badges were awarded to those students who had achieved their points.

Clem Burns Heritage Awards Congratulations to 2014 students who received a highly commended award in the local museum’s Clem Burns Heritage awards with their projects. The theme was centred on migration and it was terrific to see our students create models of local historical buildings and tomato gardening. Tayla Vanderval, Chloe Steenson, Ruby Tyler and

Caitlin Turner and Brooke Martin all displayed excellence.

Science Day National Science Day was celebrated with a bang in May 2014 with the whole school involved in bringing in a tub of ice for the ice castle extravaganza. The ice was stacked carefully to build a ice castle which lasted days. Students were intrigued with the range of the ice blocks brought with many colour and style variations being introduced this year. Mrs Deb Clarke led this magnificent day and worked with staff to ensure all K-6 students had the opportunity to participate in a range of stimulating and interactive science activities.

Rio Tinto Conservation Project

As part of our focus on sustainability and the environment our school was invited to participate in a conservation project with Rio Tinto. Room 9, 10 and 13 planted new plants and seedling in our school gardens and were involved in looking after them. Positive Behaviour in Schools Our school has a whole school program to deal with positive behaviour program that focuses on teaching expected behaviours and rewarding students when they display those behaviours. The PBS team meets twice a term and guides staff in the implementation of an action plan. A new behaviour is introduced at the school assembly each fortnight and students receive tokens when the behaviour is displayed. This program is well supported by staff, students and parents.

ICT

Allendale continued to implement technology into classrooms to support 21 C learning. 15 desktops were purchased for the new library and another 30 iPads were placed into K-7 classrooms totalling 100 iPads in use. Staff attended professional learning, set up class blogs and used classroom interactive whiteboards to teach curriculum in an engaging way. The school website and school app were used regularly to communicate and share messages with parents. Class blogs were used by several classroom teachers to showcase students work at regular intervals.

Fun Friday During 2014 many of our students were rewarded for the positive behaviour choices they have made. Students and staff enjoyed activities such as scrapbooking, co-operative games, storytelling, origami, laptops, board games, mancala, lego and construction and art. Sports such as cricket and tennis with accredited local coaches were popular as was and the movie and popcorn! Fun Friday was a real treat for the students that consistently display the Behaviour Expectations of Allendale Primary School.

Physical Education The Allendale Primary school physical education program caters for all students K-7. In 2014 the following programs provided enormous value to our students in terms of motivation, engagement and an improvement of physical skills. Interschool Netball Carnival On Friday 23 May Allendale had 3 teams participating in the Red Ink Midwest Netball Carnival. The unanimous feedback from the coaches and parents was the girls represented Allendale extremely well, displaying outstanding sportsmanship both on and off the court. It was great to see the girls support the other Allendale teams when they weren’t playing. The Year 5/6 team did very well, winning a couple of games and being close in the others. Players who performed consistently well throughout the day were Brooke Phillips & Chloe Steenson. The Year 6 team didn’t lose a game and were the champions in their division. All the girls played extremely well throughout the carnival, a real team effort. The Year 7 team were unfortunate not to win a game but they made a huge improvement throughout the day.

Interschool Football Carnival On Friday 23 May Allendale Year 5, 6 & 7 boys competed against other local schools in the football lightning carnival. It was a fantastic day overall. Unfortunately we didn’t get a win on the board but that didn’t dampen the boys’ spirits. With the constant encouragement from Jack Taylor, our boys gave it their all throughout all four games. Dylan Hughes, James Hedland & Edward Curley were our stand out players for the day. All three boys managed to be wherever the ball was, taking some awesome marks and fantastic intercepts.

Eagles Cup The Eagles Cup primary school competition was held in Term 3 with Year 5-7 boys playing for the school team. It was great to see all of the team working so hard and being committed for the season duration. Miss Turvey, Mrs Criddle and Mrs Riley along with parents coached and supported the team. Few games were won by Allendale however the sportsmanship of the team was exemplary.

The Arts Visual Arts program at Allendale Primary School is a vibrant and innovative program that is highly respected by the school community. Mrs Helen Symington enjoyed much success with students in 2014 with students producing some outstanding pieces of work which were

promoted and displayed within the school. A few senior students participated in individual projects which was successful for them in terms of engagement. School murals around the school were also a motivator for students with Year 6/7 students involved in painting a mural as their graduation gift to the school. The music program at Allendale is a three day a week program for Year 1-7 students and focus on teaching students the musical skills and an appreciation of music. Miss Jess Turvey led Showcase in 2014 which is a highlight on the school calendar with Year 3-7 students enjoying performing in education week at Queens Park Theatre. This program is highly admired by the Allendale community. The school choir performed on numerous occasions including Midwest Multicultural Harmony Day at Maitland Park and at school assemblies. Mrs Jennifer Gadsby added great strength to the choir with her musical background. Instrumental music program continued to grow with a new guitar teacher leading students in learning an instrument. Musica Viva incursion was a highlight with students enjoying this spectacular group. All students and staff participated in singing a popular song last week as part of the Count Us In musical program. Participating schools across Australia stopped at 9.30am to sing the same song at the same time.

Iluka Showcase Spectacular An outstanding Iluka Showcase performance was shown at Queens Park Theatre as part of Midwest Education Week celebration on Geraldton. We are very proud of the Year 3-7 student achievements and acknowledge the dedication of our staff who coordinated the production for 2014. Miss Turvey, Miss Briggs-Killick and Miss Lickfold practised with students over a term to prepare students for their special event.

Cultural Awareness In Term 1 2014 Ibu Erlin taught Indonesian to Year 4-7 students as part of our commitment to 21 C learning and Asia studies. In term 2-4 a teacher was appointed to teach cross cultural awareness with a focus on aboriginal studies and Asia. Mrs Kathy McGuiness focussed on teaching students about tolerance, respect and an understanding of culture within lessons. A key feature of this program is our work with our Bali sister school and the Orang-utan Project which are key parts of this important area.

Bali Sister School

In July 2014 Principal Lisa Criddle had the opportunity to visit our Bali sister school SD1 Kaba Kaba. It was wonderful to see the students and staff again and provided them with some books for their school library. They were very appreciative of the support we have provided them and wish to thank our community. Some of the Allendale parent community also visited SD1 Kaba Kaba in 2014 and donated reading books and other classroom resources.

NAIDOC Week

A terrific NAIDOC day was held at the end of term 3 celebrating culture, history and tolerance. A range of interactive activities were organised for the week which culminated in a special NAIDOC assembly. We acknowledged Mr Ashley Taylor and Mr Ian Heberle who addressed the assembly. Thanks to all parents who contributed in some way and supported the week.

Pastoral Care and Chaplaincy In 2014 Allendale has a strong focus on supporting all students in pastoral care. The Student Services team consisting of the Principal, Deputy Principal, School psychology and the school chaplain worked with inter-agencies to assist children in need. The school funded a 0.2 chaplain and applied in December 2014 for additional funding. We were able to attract funding of $20 000 to enhance the chaplaincy program with 0.4 time allocation. Christine Newcombe worked with students individually and in small social skills groups. A successful lunch time program was also run for the year with students coming in to do craft activities while eating their lunch and interacting with each other and the Chaplain.

Surveying the School Community A parent, staff and students satisfaction survey was carried out in 2013 and will be undertaken in 2015 to determine feedback from the community. Parents were also surveyed through the PAVE (Preventing Anxiety and Victimisation through Education) program, a Telethon Institute research project which focussed on pastoral care. The staff were surveyed on Positive Behaviour support in 2014 to assess their readiness for inclusion in the PBS program. The school community was also surveyed during the Independent Public School consultation process which gave responses and ratings from students, parents, staff and

community members. Community Interaction The community was involved in a number of events in 2014 where they worked together to fundraise. The school fete in October was a huge success with over $10 000 being raised for the school. The fete was held on school grounds and attracted many visitors to the school. Additionally Year 6/7 parents and staff combined together to run many successful fundraising projects for the school camp to Perth. Bunnings was popular choice for fundraising with cake stall and sausage sizzles. The school camp was subsided by the fundraising efforts of the group which enable the majority of Year 6/7 students the opportunity to experience the richness of camp.

On Entry Assessment The On-entry assessment program provides teachers and parents with information about the understandings that a child brings to school in Pre-primary and in Year 1 and 2 in Speaking and Listening, Reading, Writing and Numeracy. Results are expressed as progression points and it is determined that at the end of each year students should have made the following progression points: Pre- primary-Progression Point 1 Year 1-Progression Point 1.5 Year 2-Progression Point 2 The table below indicates the percentage of students at the end of the year who have achieved the Progression Points. There is cause for concern in Pre- primary. Only Year 1 aboriginal students were tested in 2014 using On entry and this will change for 2015/6.

Pre-Primary 45% 58% 27%

Year 1 * 50% 33% 38%

Year 2 * n/a n/a n/a *Aboriginal students only were tested in 2014

NAPLAN 2014 results show the following results:

Year 3 data indicates results are in the expected range however Reading is not in the expected range with a number of students in Year 3 below the minimum standard.

Year 5 data indicates that results are in the expected range in all areas.

Year 7 data indicates that results are in the expected range in all areas.

All year levels show a high number of students in the bottom 20%, there needs to be more students in higher bands achieving better results.

Page 12: 2014 Annual Report - Allendale Primary School · Allendale Primary School opened in 1962 and is situated in the centre of Geraldton, Western Australia. The school was built on land,

A focus needs to be on moving more students to higher bands through a case management approach.

In Maths Year 5 and 7 data is comparable to like schools and Year 7 results were above like schools.

In Reading and Maths Year 3 data is below like schools and is a cause for concern. School leaders will look at focus groups for the Year 4 cohort in 2015.

Literacy Strengths 2014 Allendale was a part of this program focusing on improving students literacy outcomes in 2014. A strong focus on Reading allowed the school to focus on a strong connected Literacy Block, Guided Reading and Reading Groups. A whole school approach to literacy was once again a key direction in spelling, writing and through synthetic phonics in the early years. Home reading continues to be strong focus with our reading awards program celebrating student achievements in reaching milestones. K-2 classrooms have embraced synthetic phonics and additional support staff were utilised in classrooms to support small groups of students in phonics. Assessments indicate that this program is making a significant difference to student outcomes with many students improving by several levels. In 2014 we were funded with 0.2 staffing for the Aboriginal Speech and Language Program with Lyn Gow leading this program and staff in synthetic phonics.

Attendance The school attendance team was led by Deputy Principal Mrs Jennifer Gadsby and a team in 2014. She met with AIEO’s Leonie McEwan and Bev Drage each week to identify attendance issues and followed the attendance process using letters, phone calls and home visits to promote more positive attendance. Whole school rewards were used as a positive to encourage all students to improve their attendance to over 90%. Attendance data for the year indicates that attendance statistics were just below like schools for non-aboriginal students and well above like schools for aboriginal students. The overall total shows that our attendance is 89.8% with like schools being at 88.3%. We will continue to strive to get to our 2015 target of 90% or above in line with WA Public schools.

Year 6/7 Camp 2014 The school camp to Perth for Year 6/7 students was very successful and enjoyed by all.
