Assignment: Mini-project on Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM)

As a team of two (2) engineering students, you are invited to identify a real engineering system from a production plant. The objective of the assignment is to study the reliability and availability of the engineering system based on existing secondary (past) maintenance data. This will allow the adoption of an appropriate maintenance strategy with a proper maintenance plan to be implemented whilst maintaining the highest availability of the engineering system. The team of students should identify an engineering system where the maintenance history data is available for a sufficiently long period. This will enable the calculation of the various parameters such as MTBF, MTTR, Reliability function, etc., for each component of the system. Using the reliability centred maintenance (RCM) methodology and relevant techniques, the team should be able to develop a proper maintenance plan while ensuring the highest availability of the overall system at the lowest running/operational cost. You are required to submit a word processed group report Font: Time New Roman size 12, paragraph: 1.5 line spacing, Text fully Justified. The report should contain a brief description of the company, and a detailed description of the engineering system under study. You need to present the secondary maintenance history data collected, show all calculations for the different technical parameters, selection (with justifications) of the relevant RCM techniques used, the implementation of the RCM techniques with all calculations and detailed explanations, critical analysis of the results & related conclusion, the recommendations in terms of the proposed maintenance strategy with strong technical justifications, and the final maintenance plan, which should attempt to maximise availability whilst minimising operational cost. Following the submission of the report, you will also be required to make an oral presentation of your findings. The presentation will be of ten (10) minutes duration, and you should make use of an appropriate visual aid system. The exact date of the presentations will be communicated in due course. The deadline for the submission of the report is Friday 20th February 2015 between 12.00 hrs and 13.00 hrs. Please hand it to myself. This assignment carries 15 marks.
