Materials needed and/or fees: *book provided by co-op “We the People”/ $10 for copied materials to be done by co-op Course Description: Being an election year, this civics class is especially pertinent. First semester we will be staging a mock campaign with class individuals posing as news reporters, pollsters, candidates giving speeches, drawing up campaign posters, writing advertisements and letters to the editor, even registering to vote! Class participation is a vital component. In the process of studying the campaign trail, you will be introduced to words like "incumbent," "constituent," "coattails", "caucus", "platforms" so that when you get to high school government class, you will be familiar with the concepts presented. We'll also talk about propaganda techniques and fallacies used in politics and advertising. You'll have plenty of opportunities to "test" your learning as we peruse political mailings and news articles. Second semester we will be studying from We the People, which delves into American history, from the influence of the English background on the Founders' thinking to the Philadelphia Convention and the Constitution. We will be reading some of the old documents that brought us where we are today, and taking advantage of some great history learning games. The co-op has the textbooks for this course, so there is no purchase necessary for this class. To be successful in this class, students will need to be active participants in class, keep up with written homework assignments and have access to newspapers or news articles via internet (especially 1st semester).

Required Text is for the parent – Teaching Writing: Structure and Style Seminar and Practicum Workbook, which can be purchased at Lifelong Learning resources, School Spot, or directly from the IEW website, http://www.excellenceinwriting.com. Materials needed and /or fees: Required Parents Materials: *Parents must purchase Teaching Writing: Structure and Style Seminar and Practicum Workbook AND complete the UHC parent/teacher course before the student may enroll. The UHC parent/teacher course, TWSS, will be held during the summer. Required text is for the parent and can be purchased at Lifelong Learning Resources or directly from the IEW website at http://www.excellenceinwriting.com/sw. The teacher notebook alone is sufficient for our class. Parents do not need to buy the DVDs. Required Student Materials: Each student must have the IEW notebook that was used in the 5th grade class. If the student is new to UHC the SWI level B packet must be purchased. Course Description: This class will require daily parent supervision/teaching. We will be teaching the Student Intensive Continuation Course (SICC) combined with the Student Writing Intensive Course (SWI). Research has shown that if our students can write well by the end of junior high, then they will be more successful in all areas of high school work. Since mastery of structure and style is the purpose of this course, use this program across your own curriculum to fit your child’s individual needs. Students need to be working on IEW material every day in order to obtain mastery (as per Mr. Pudewa). Assignments will be given on the material presented in class. All assignments will be due the following week. Parents will be given different checklists during this course. You are to use these to grade your child’s work. (The students should read the checklist and actually check off all items for the assignment.) The parent should make sure the final copy is completed and then sign or initial the checklist. however, turning in the assignments offers the students some outside accountability. If you know your child will miss a class – go ahead and work through the material together. Contact me and I will let you know what the assignment should be for the following week. This is so that your child will not be behind when s/he returns. I will be presenting this course through the IEW DVD in class; however, YOU are the primary teacher! It is imperative that you know and understand the material presented in the workbook mentioned above.

Text: Latin For Children, Primer A – see below Materials: text, 3-ring binder

Course Description: Since Latin is one of my favorite subjects, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to study this wonderful language

with our students at UHC. The curriculum we use is called Latin for Children, Primer A. This text is designed for beginning Latin students. NOTE: This is a new curriculum for this class; it is truly an introduction to Latin and moves at a slower pace than our previous text. Please use the link below to purchase the textbook; the text is also available at Lifelong Learning Resources.

The Latin for Children Primer A is the heart of the Latin for Children (LFC) program. Each workbook text is engaging, incremental, creative, and filled with clear grammatical explanations written expressly for the student. Exercises, tests, and a sizable and useful reference section are also included. Lessons include a plethora of mnemonic aids (songs, chants) that enable students to learn vocabulary and grammar with ease and delight. http://classicalacademicpress.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_6_13&products_id=2

In order for a student to be successful in this class, he or she should be able and willing to memorize a weekly vocabulary list and have a good working knowledge of English grammar. Also, students will need to commit to twenty to thirty minutes of Latin homework DAILY.

Page 2 Literature Analysis for Middle School

Course Description: Students will gain an understanding of the development of literature and will practice the skills of close literary analysis through

creative hands-on variety of assignments. Special attention will be given to literary terms and analysis. Please note that this is not a

complete English course for the student. The parent will need to add the other components of an English course, which are grammar,

writing, and vocabulary. IF your child has previously completed a strong grammar curriculum, and this class is paired with IEW 2 or IEW3

this will be your complete English course. However we recommend that you continue a vocabulary program. In order to be successful

in this class your student should be able to follow a syllabus for assignments, participate in teacher - facilitated class discussions, and

follow directions to write papers relating to the works studied.
