2014-15 UNIFORM PHILOSOPHY, GUIDELINES & ORDERING INFORMATION

OUR UNIFORM PHILOSOPHY

While uniforms have obvious p r a c t i c a l f u n c t i o n s contributing both to an orderly atmosphere as well as a safe one, the more i m p o r t a n t re a s o n s f o r uniforms are actually pre-f u n c t i o n a l . C l o t h i n g demonstrates calling, role, g e n d e r, i d e n t i t y , a n d vocation. Clothing functions in its highest form when it symbolizes and represents each of these in an excellent and fitting way:

Calling/Vocation – Academy students are called to be disciples and scholars. Their uniform should, therefore, have some continuity with the teachers discipling them, as well as motivate them to be the young students they’ve been called to be.

Role – Like characters on a stage who "play into" the c o s t u m e t h e y ’ v e b e e n assigned, parents realize that a c h i l d ’s a c t i o n s a n d attitudes flow both from internal realities of the heart as well as external realities of t h e i r e n v i ro n m e n t a n d clothing. Our uniform should c a l l f o r t h t h e r i g h t "character" for the great drama of "education."

Gender – In an age of rampant ega l i ta r ian ism, t e a c h i n g c h i l d r e n t h e beautiful aspects of their g e n d e r a n d t h e corresponding clothing which brings that out to the fullest are excellent distinctives that The Academy can offer.

Identity – Rather than teach children that they shape their own identity according to the i r own p re fe rences , uniforms teach very concrete truths about conforming to a standard, a lesson ultimately rooted in our conformity to our Lord Jesus Christ. Our uniform should have the marks of excellence and the proper enforcement to help shape their understanding of identity.

Obviously, other parameters - school precedents, uniform uses, accessory variety, and c o s t - p l a y i n t o o u r consideration. Regardless, w e p r a y a n d c o m m i t ourselves to the idea that n e w u n i f o r m s s h o u l d ultimately represent our unity as a school, not serve as a tool to divide it.

OUR UNIFORM

GUIDELINES

Whether a student is in our B lended o r Trad i t i ona l model, he or she is required to own enough components to form one complete formal uniform to be worn for c h a p e l , t o f e a s t s a n d festivals, and for classroom presentations as directed by his or her teacher. Students may wear this formal uniform as o f ten as they l i ke , n e g a t i n g t h e n e e d t o purchase “optional” items (though parents are welcome to do that as well).

FootwearPre3 through 4th grade footwear should be all-white Keds-style shoe (girls) and solid brown dress shoes (boys). 5th through 12th grade footwear should be brown or black flats (girls) and solid brown dress shoes (boys). Sandals and shoes with wheels are not allowed.

Navy leggings or white ankle or bobby socks are allowed for girls. Boys’ socks must be color-coordinated with their shoes (i.e. no white socks with brown dress shoes, etc.).

Shorts, Skirts & ShirtsShorts are allowed for Pre3 through 4th students only. Jumpers and/or skirts must be hemmed to the top of the knee. With the exception of 5th through 12th girls, shirts should always be tucked in.

BeltsBelt-looped clothing should be worn with a brown belt.

LayeringLayering components should be whi te and worn for warmth under uniform attire.

Fleece vests, jackets, or hoodies (hood down) with The Academy crest may be worn in class for warmth.

Non-uniform outerwear may be worn to/from school and during outside recess, but should not be worn otherwise during school hours.

CommitmentThe f acu l t y, s t aff , and a d m i n i s t r a t i o n o f T h e A c a d e m y t a k e t h e s e standards seriously. Students not wearing a complete uniform or not complying with the first request to address the infraction will be removed from class. A parent will then be called to bring the appropriate missing clothing to school or to take the student home.
