The Bloomingdale Park Board of Commissioners is the legal governing authority through which the business of the District is conducted. Park Commissioners are elected by residents of the District to a six-year term without pay.

Once the Park Board meeting has adjourned, all board members return to their roles as citizens and taxpayers. It is only the Park Board, acting at a legally constituted meeting, which has the authority to establish or change policy, sign agreements or award contracts. The Park Board has appointed a professional executive director to manage the operation of the District on a daily basis.

The Bloomingdale Park District Park Board meets at 7 p.m. at the Johnston Recreation Center, 172 S. Circle Ave. in Bloomingdale. The public is invited to attend. Meeting schedules, board agendas and minutes are available at www.bloomingdaleparks.org.

Grandparent rateIn today’s day and age, with many families consisting of two working parents, it is commonplace for grandparents to assist in caring for grandchildren. The Bloomingdale Park District regularly receives requests from residents to register their grandchildren in programs at resident rates, despite the fact the grandchildren are not residents.

The Park District recognized this challenge and changed its residency policy to accommodate resident grandparents and their non-resident grandchildren. This Park Board of Commissioners officially approved this immediate policy change at the September 15, 2014 board meeting.

“As our community continues to age and grandparents regularly provide care for their grandchildren, the Board of Commissioners felt it appropriate and in the best interests of our customers to accommodate our adult population by extending the resident rate to their grandchildren,” said BPD Executive Director Carrie Fullerton, CPRE. “This allows grandparents to share the vast array of quality programs, events, facilities and services offered by the Bloomingdale Park District with some of the most special people in their lives.”

Resident benefits include first priority when registering for a program, and in most cases, a lower program/pass fee than those residing outside the established district boundaries.

To receive the resident rate, participants must come to the Johnston Recreation Center and show proof of residency. Items to prove residency include tax bill and/or utility bill and a picture ID (driver’s license, state ID, passport, military ID).

Score 6 – Pursuing Victory with HonorSM

The Bloomingdale Park District is excited to show continued support for the CHARACTER COUNTS!-based certification program for coaches, parents, officials and children called Score 6. This program incorporates the six pillars of character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship into youth sports. The primary goal of the program is to build character through these six pillars while teaching the fundamentals of the sport.

This program has been implemented in hopes that the main focus of youth sports is placed on fun instead of winning at all costs. We realize winning is important – to an extent. However, we need to make sure the rules of the game are followed and the players, coaches, officials and opponents are respected at all times. We need to focus more on teaching young players how to win with honor and lose with dignity and pride. The outcome is to keep the fun in sports!

Parental involvement and cooperation are essential to the success of this program. Parents and coaches are required to attend a Score 6 meeting and sign a code of character. Athletes are not allowed to participate until at least one of their parents has attended a Score 6 meeting. The program is completely free and lasts approximately one hour. This program is designed to impact all sports programs. Once you become certified, you are not required to attend another meeting.

We appreciate your cooperation with the Park District and look forward to seeing you at one of the Score 6 meetings listed below. Thank you for your continued support and remember character does count in youth sports in Bloomingdale!

Parents and coaches may attend a Score 6 meeting at any time, even if they are not currently involved in a youth sport. Attendance is required for the entire session.

Please visit www.bloomingdaleparks.org to register online.

If there is not a minumum of two participants registered by 4pm on the day of class the class will be canceled. Questions regarding registration, please call 630.529.3650.

It is of equal importance that children have quality leisure time with their peers. Our instructors welcome the opportunity to discuss concerns with parents before or after class, time permitting. Thank you again for your cooperation.

Mission StatementThe Mission of the Bloomingdale Park District is to efficiently and economically provide recreation programs, facilities and open spaces

designed to provide enjoyable leisure time experiences that benefit the community.

Dear Residents:

Once again, it is my pleasure to let you know what the Park District has done this past year and what is in store for the coming one. This past year has seen a number of improvements and changes to several of the parks and the Johnston Recreation Center.

• The tennis courts at Lakeview Park and Indian Lakes Park will be ready for use come Spring of 2015. The old courts were not constructed in the proper manner necessitating complete reconstruction, including new base material. This will insure many years of enjoyment.

• The new playground structure at Seasons 4 Park also will be ready for play come Spring of 2015. The colors and some of the features were chosen by the surrounding residents and their children this past fall.

• As of this writing, we are awaiting word from the State of Illinois regarding a grant application for the reconstruction of the playground at Circle Park.

• With the cooperation of the Bloomingdale Garden Club, all of the parks enjoyed colorful plantings throughout the growing season.

• The holiday season will see the addition of several new features added to the Holiday Lights display at Old Town Park. Make sure you come out to see this spectacular event.

• Finally, because more and more of our residents are caring for grandchildren, the Board of Commissioners recently enacted a new policy granting resident rates to non-resident grandchildren registered by their resident grandparents. (See page 2 for more information)

I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the efforts and accomplishments of all of our staff. While every one of them goes above and beyond in their efforts to provide a clean, safe, friendly and responsible atmosphere for our patrons, young and mature, two of them, in particular, should be singled out for their accomplishments. Alisa Boesen and Kathy Jecmen, members of the front office staff, were recently recognized for their superior customer service in an article featured in the magazine published by the National Recreation and Park Association. Please take time to congratulate them when you come in to the JRC. You’ll know who they are by their smiles and cheerful greetings.

Finally, as I reach the mid-point of my six-year term and the completion of almost 18 years on this Board of Commissioners, I reflect on the changes that I have seen in our facilities, personnel and participants and am gratified with our ability to keep pace. Through tax caps, recessions and changes in demographics, our parks professionals labor long hours to insure that you, our stakeholders, are satisfied with the product we present. I am in awe of their dedication and for that I offer my thanks.

Sincerely,

Sebastian “Buzz” PuccioPresident Bloomingdale Park District Board of Commissioners

Stratford Square Mall honored as Best Friend of Illinois Parks by Illinois Association of Park DistrictsBloomingdale Park District valued partner Stratford Square Mall was awarded Best Friend of Illinois Parks – Large Business by the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD) at its Best of the Best Awards Gala October 24 at Wheeling Park District’s Chevy Chase Country Club.

The Park District nominated Stratford Square Mall because of its support, involvement and the impact the business has had on BPD residents. The two have developed a mutually beneficial, and in some ways very unique, relationship that has far exceeded any initial expectations. Stratford has supported and advanced the Park District in the following ways:

• The Mall completely renovated and updated an empty store to adhere to Park District regulations and standards. The room serves as an additional 3,000-square feet of programming space for the District, while also proving to be convenient for shoppers.

• Allows the Bloomingdale Parks Foundation to wrap gifts at the mall every holiday season as a fundraiser. The mall supplies all of the wrapping paper, boxes, tape, etc. for FREE!

• Stratford Square has served as major sponsor for several Park District events, including a platinum sponsorship of the District’s Festival of Lights holiday event.

• Stratford has left a legacy in Bloomingdale’s park system, contributing the resources necessary to pay for an accessible drinking fountain at the District’s Sunnyside Park.

“Our partnership with Stratford Square Mall allows the Park District to extend its reach into the community and support Bloomingdale’s economic engine,” said BPD Executive Director Carrie Fullerton. “We have been able to support mall management in their mission to attract and retain our residents, and they have supported us in our goal to extend our agency into our community beyond our rec center and parks.”

To learn more about Stratford Square Mall and its partnership with the Bloomingdale Park District, visit www.bloomingdaleparks.org and click on “Be Involved” in the top menu bar and then “Corporate Partnership” on the drop-down menu.

Festival of Lights November 28 – December 28Gallery I: “Trains, Planes and Automobiles”

Once again, the Museum is pleased to feature the LEGO village train display. This large layout is divided into various scenes: city, winter sports, pirate ships on the sea, and a jungle with a river running through it. A total of eight freight, passenger and commuter trains traverse the landscape. And for this show, a Christmas train has been added.

This exhibit is on loan from the creator, Randy Flones, a seven-year member of the Valley Model Railroad Club. He used more than 50,000 LEGO pieces to create each of the buildings and all of the train engines and cars.

Accompanying the train display is a Red Baron plane flying over the village, a video playing WWII planes taking off and landing at Aurora Airport, automobile images, travel on historic Route 66, and vintage posters and advertising.

Gallery II: “Let the Cat out of the Bag”

Kids and adults who enjoy cats and/or cartooning will find this gallery loaded with Garfield the Cat memorabilia. There are small stuffed animals, glassware, textiles, cartoon strips, a telephone, alarm clock, and even a Garfield gumball machine! All of these pieces are from the personal collection of Charlotte Burgess. Charlotte is a talented artist who captures the humor in life with her clay sculptures. Many of the pieces shown date from the 1970’s and are hard to find. Charlotte says, “What would life be without a little whimsy every now and then?”

Jim Davis, Garfield creator, began as a cartoonist for an Indianapolis newspaper. Garfield the Cat was first syndicated in 1978 and became an international success. Garfield the cartoon now appears in 2,600 newspapers worldwide. His image is on some 3,500 licensed products.

This gallery also features:

• Holiday craft workshops for kids

• Cartoon strip drawing (which is then added to the wall)

• Activity area for kids
