A Perfect 10 has long been a standard of achievement, from gymnastics to customer service ratings.
Now, you can enjoy that same top-of-the-scale service for your hair and nails.
Canada Lytle recently expanded her Rapid City-based business to Sioux Falls, opening A Perfect 10 Nail and Beauty Bar at Remington Pointe. She says while this business concept isn’t a new one, it is the Perfect 10 atmosphere that sets them apart.
“The blow-dry bar has become very popular across the
country,” says Lytle. “It’s a salon that provides washing and blow-drying hair, minus the cut or color. You can come in to the salon and in a matter of 45 minutes to an hour, you have a style that will last a couple of days.”
When you want a little more pampering, you can treat your nails to a manicure or pedicure in this trendy lounge setting. Oh, and let’s not forget that you can sit back and enjoy all these services while sipping on a refreshing beer or glass of wine.
The salon stays true to its “beauty bar” name, as customers sit right up at the bar for their manicures. Lytle says the salon

focuses on natural nail care and also offers gel polish manicures.Customers can also sink into a comfy chair to enjoy a foot
bath and pedicure. Options range from the basic pedi with the soak, scrub and light massage, to the “Perfect 10 Pedi” which adds on a hot towel treatment, moisturizing mask for the feet, callus remover and hot booties.
Customers can add detailed nail art in a wide array of colors and designs. By looking at the photo gallery on their Facebook page, it is obvious there is no limit to the creativity of the cosmetologists at A Perfect 10.

Whether you like pink or blue, rainbows or zig-zags, baseball or bikers, they can create the custom look you want.
The salon also offers “Little Diva” services for girls ages 10 and under, as well as “Tween” mani and pedi services for girls ages 11-14.
Lytle says the salon is all about convenient and affordable services in a high-pampering environment.
“We want our customers to relax and enjoy their time here, whether they book an individual appointment or a party with friends.”
A Perfect 10 has package deals and memberships and a mobile app that allows customers to book appointments, which also can be made online at www.aperfect10nailbar.com.
Lytle has opened three salons in Rapid City over the past three years, and she is excited about the expansion to Sioux Falls.
“Ever since we opened our first location in Rapid City, there has been such a great demand for services in this kind of environment,” she says.
“We had customers traveling to Rapid City from Sioux Falls, and they were really encouraging us to add another location. So, we finally decided to expand to Sioux Falls. There is so much excitement here, and I can’t wait to see what’s yet to come.”

When Dan and Lydia Healy bought the land where they would eventually build their home, it probably would have been
considered “out in the country.” While the southern edge of Sioux Falls had filled in by the time
they were finished with their building project, their home is set back from the main streets in the area, providing them a quiet, private space away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
“When we bought the land, we knew we wanted to build a home we could grow into,” says Lydia. “We started with what we had to have, and we’ve been fortunate to be able to add to that over the years.”
The home’s style could be described as “old-world-meets-casual-family.”
The exterior stucco and stone finish establishes that old world feel, which is carried throughout the home with crackled wall finishes, a mix of warm maple wood with oil-rubbed bronze accents and original art pieces created by local artist Shirley Jamison, a good friend of the family.
A formal dining area just off the entryway is used for special occasions and features arch cut-outs in the walls that provide a glimpse into the living room, as well as a large painting by Jamison of stone steps decorated with colorful flower pots leading up to a door.
“She’s a self-taught artist,” Lydia explains, “and she is really wonderful. I just told her I wanted something that made me feel like I was continuing from the entryway right into another place, and that painting is what she created. I love the look of the stairs leading to that door. It could be a villa in Italy or Spain.”
The focal point of the formal living room is the fireplace surrounded by light-colored coral stone from South America. In the center of the mantel is carved the Healy family crest.
Several windows in the room bring in an abundance of natural light. The living room opens into a more casual dining area and

the kitchen. A built-in hutch along the wall of the dining area has an opening revealing painted tiles on the wall with a wine and grapes design. The wine bottle is personalized with the year 1997 – the year Dan and Lydia were married.
“We actually aren’t big wine drinkers,” says Lydia, “but we really like that motif for decorating.”
The long column drapes between the windows in the dining area add a warm splash of color without blocking any of the light

accented with oil-rubbed bronze hardware, gives you the feeling that you are in an Italian cucina.
The kitchen features a free-standing island as well as a separate counter with stools, which provides a great place for the Healy’s three teenagers to have breakfast and a popular gathering spot when the Healys are entertaining.

Whether they are cooking just for the family or for friends, the indoor grill gets plenty of year-round use, according to Lydia. And, the large walk-in pantry with its etched glass door is another favorite feature.
The large family room behind the kitchen used to be a deck.“We weren’t using it as much as a deck, so we decided to
enclose it,” says Lydia. But, they left the original kitchen window in place.

“It’s great because I can open it up or just knock on the glass to get the kids’ attention and let them know it’s chow time!”
The roomy sectional provides plenty of seating for the entire family to watch the flat-screen television that hangs on the wall. A rectangular, built-in gas fireplace has clear rocks accented by colored lights. Above the fireplace hangs another of Shirley Jamison’s creations – a rectangular print in a black frame to mimic the look of the fireplace. The scene features a colorful rendition of the Healy family ranch.
Also on the main floor is a space meant more for Dan.“We use the room as a den and office,” says Lydia, “and we
went with a darker chocolate brown on the wall since it’s a little more masculine. Hanging on the walls are trophies from some of Dan’s hunting trips, like the bear skin from a Montana hunt and several bucks from the ranch. The bucks now sport dog tags as a way for them to keep track of the date and location of the hunt.
A mud room features a wall of “cubbies” – one for each family member – to keep shoes, coats and bags. There is an exit door from this room, as well as a back staircase leading up to the second floor.
“We thought having this additional staircase was important,” says Lydia. “Both for convenience and for safety.”
At the top of the main staircase is a bright study area. A built in desk with plenty of storage takes up one full wall and has a work station with computer for each of the three teens.
“We love this because there are no fights like there would be if
there was just one desk or one computer,” explains Lydia. “Plus, there is plenty of room for me to keep an eye over their shoulder as they are doing homework!”
A door from the study area leads out to a small deck over the
entrance to the house. It is a great spot for an afternoon read in the sun. Or, perhaps, since Dan calls it the “shotgun deck,” a place to spot little critters like squirrels or rabbits that are in the wooded area.

All of the family bedrooms are upstairs, along with a laundry room, which saves trips up and down the stairs.
The lower level has plenty of great entertaining space with a décor using a little darker color scheme than the upper levels of
the house. One wall features a large mural (another of Jamison’s
creations), again with that old world theme of a scene like an Italian countryside with big red poppies along the walkway.
34 nest | aT home
“Shirley knows I love red,” says Lydia, “so she made those poppies a focal point in the mural. And, it really complements our red poppy chairs.”
The fireplace is surrounded by stone with windows on either side, and the windows have fabric awnings extending into the room.
“We wanted to create a look that makes you feel like you’re outside.”
A game table and chairs sit in an area with bump out windows looking to the backyard. Covering the windows are dark brown wicker shades with belt straps wrapped around them that gave the shades the look of old fashioned suitcases.
An addition to the house is underway that will allow the Healys to add a bar and entertaining area that will have a refrigerator and dishwasher. Lydia says she is looking forward to that.
“No more running dishes all the way up to the kitchen!”The family also enjoys their theater room downstairs with two
rows of cushioned recliners.Several doors downstairs lead out to the backyard or the
garage, which Lydia says is really going to start coming in handy as the kids get older and have friends over.
The backyard is a one-of-a-kind space that transports you
to a different place and certainly makes you feel like you are somewhere other than in the middle of the city.
Lydia credits her in-laws for the active nature of the backyard.“They are so active,” she says. “They swim and they play tennis,
and we want to be sure we all stay as active as they are.”The space includes a putting green, pool and tennis court. Lydia
organizes a tennis league and often has 7 am drills and matches happening by 8:30. The kids learned the game of tennis when they were younger, and now Lydia has other women who come over to play.
“We had to be sure we had a shallow end when we put the pool in because the kids were still young,” she explains, “but we also had to have a deep end for Dan to do his cannonballs!”
There are several seating areas around the yard, including one underneath the upstairs family room that has stone walls and arch features, and another near the stone fireplace with the stamped Healy “H.”
Whether there are large gatherings with friends or quiet weekends with just the family, the old world style of the Healy home is paired with plenty of casual comfort for the perfect getaway spot.

Cook Without Cooking

By JiM Mathis
Writing for this magazine involves a little bit of time travel. You see, as you read this, the calendar says September; the kids
are back in school, the days are getting shorter and you’re starting to think about the beautiful autumn weather in the not-so-distance future. But as I write this, we’re still in the dog days of summer. The one-two punch of heat and humidity is taking a toll on me. And on steamy hot days like this, it’s hard to get motivated to fire up the grill or slave over a hot stove. That’s when it’s time to cook without cooking.
Sounds like a riddle, right? How do you cook without cooking? I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve for hot days, whether it’s Indian summer or any warm day when the air conditioning goes on the
fritz. Simple, refreshing dishes you can make without ever turning on the stove.
CarpaccioOn a recent visit to Parker’s in downtown Sioux Falls, my
beloved and I were reminded of the perfect example of this idea; Carpaccio. A simple dish made by slicing raw beef very thinly and serving it with a dressing of lemon and olive oil. Parker’s dish was made with bison, then added parmesan, capers and cornichons. Carpaccio looks elegant and tastes great, but don’t be afraid of either the raw meat or the fancy name. It really is easy to make and you can let your butcher do most of the work. Ask them to
etc. for her | September 2014 41
slice high-quality beef filet, then add your own marinade. Or slice your own, it takes a little effort, but if you wrap a piece of tenderloin in plastic and put it in the freezer for about 2 hours, it will firm up and be easier to slice into eighth to quarter inch slices. Those slices can be pounded between sheets of plastic wrap for the perfect, paper-thin restaurant style Carpaccio. And one eight-once filet will make enough for four appetizers, so while it looks and tastes extravagant, it won’t bust your budget. Remember, you’re eating this raw, so splurge and go to the best butcher shop you can find.
CevicheAnyone who has ventured south of the border knows it can get
pretty hot in Mexico, so it’s not surprising that our neighbors to the south have a great tradition of the cook without cooking genre. Starting with a never-ending array of salsas and guacamoles, Central and South America seem to have mastered the no-cook condiment, but where they really shine is ceviche. It’s the perfect answer to the riddle, cook with acid instead of fire.
Ceviche can mean any number of seafood dishes where the fish or crustaceans are cured (not-really cooked) with acidic citrus juices instead of cooking. Often firm white ocean fish like grouper, sea bass or red snapper are used, but shrimp, small bay scallops and even lobster and octopus or squid are great candidates for the treatment. But, like Carpaccio, you’re eating raw protein, so you want to make sure you’re getting the best quality. There are still risks, but in my mind, the reward is well worth it.
42 nest | man in The KiTchen
Chilled SoupThere are lots of famous chilled soups like gazpacho and
vichyssoise, but every recipe I’ve ever tried calls for some combination of steaming, sautéing or roasting the vegetables before the final product is cooled down for serving. But I’ve found a chilled cucumber and honeydew soup that is easy to make, requires no heat and is so refreshing on a hot summer day, that you’ll wonder how you ever survived a summer without it.
Cold Cucumber Honeydew Soup3 Cups peeled, seedless cucumber, diced3 Cups ripe honeydew, diced 1/4 Cup plain Greek yogurt4 ounces chilled sake
In a food processor or blender, puree yogurt, 2 cups of cucumber and 2 cups of melon. Transfer to a bowl and stir in remaining cucumber and honeydew. Chill for 3 hours or so, then serve in chilled bowls with a splash of sake on top of each. For kids, you can leave out the sake, but grown-ups will enjoy the extra kick. Serves 4.
So there you have it, a few simple ways to rescue you from the stove. A few ideas to help you keep your cool while flexing your culinary muscles and turn up the mealtime heat without ever starting a fire. So bring on those last few hot days of the year. I’m ready and won’t even break a sweat. I know the secret of how to cook without cooking.
Do yourself a favor, eat something good today.

Decorative Roller ShadesLight control and privacy are achieved with the modern roller shades that echo the warm neutrals of the walls. A fabric-covered cassette finishes the look at the top while the decorative hem and bead trim tie the shades to the drapery fabric and save them from an industrial look.
Draperies & HardwareThe neutral colors of the walls, floor and upholstery are enhanced by the punch that comes from the window seat. The color story begins with the drapery panels, worked in the Lunar Sky fabric, a large multi-colored pattern that's bold but without getting pushy. Hung on a wood pole with rings, the look is a little bit traditional and a little bit modern. They're the perfect frame to the windows and window seat, making it a focal point in the room.
Window Seat & PillowsThe frame is completed with the seat cushion and pillows, done mostly in solids compatible with the draperies. The deep orange of the cushion has some pop but it's balanced by the purples and blues in the pillows. Varied sizes, shapes, and trips--plus the two patterned pillows--keeps the look from becoming static.

Wherefore Art Thou Vino?
If you paid attention to your 9th grade English teacher (thank you Mrs. Levis!) you will undoubtedly know that the word
“wherefore” does not mean “where,” it means “why.” And that’s the question that drives us, or at least me, an enophile (this time refer to your 10th grade Latin teacher: eno=wine + phile=lover of.) Wherefore art thou vino? Why are you wine? In other words, what makes wine so special, and why does it intrigue me so? As I ponder these questions, my thoughts drift to how special my Italian grandmother was and how women are influencing the world of Italian wine.
To answer my plethora of questions, I must go back to the original question, “Wherefore art thou vino?” which is in reference to one of my favorite plays, Romeo and Juliet. This tragic story takes place in Verona, and I was fortunate as a teenager to do a lot of traveling with my family who has relatives in virtually every country throughout Europe and the Middle East. My memories of visits to Verona will always remind me of three things: Juliet’s balcony, the grapes of Valpolicella, and my maternal grandmother, Nonna Anna.
My grandmother, or Nonna in Italian, was a feisty little Italian woman who was born in Verona, a quaint town that has now grown into the second most popular tourist attraction in the region of Veneto; the first being the famous “underwater” city
of Venice. My Nonna, who was 94-years-old when she passed away, led quite the interesting life: Imagine being born in Italy during World War I, growing up in Europe during the Great Depression, marrying a circus acrobat named Spartacus (no lie,) raising three children on your own during World War II, making a living as a seamstress in Florence, and then moving away from everything you’ve ever known to live in the United States with your daughter, son-in-law, and adorable grandson (that’s me!) Anyway, the point is that she endured life’s ups and downs and had to give up everything time and time again to pursue her passions. Her story is not unlike the Italian women making wine today.
In my quest to discovering exactly what it is that makes wine so special, I realize that I am still in awe whenever I look at an Italian wine label. Italy is known for simplicity and elegance, but have you ever tried reading an Italian wine bottle label? You probably feel like you need Rosetta Stone just to interpret some of the words. Who is the producer? What is the grape? Where is it from? The purpose of a label is to guide you to a wine that you might like. But if the label is not clear, concise, and specific, then how are you supposed to know if you have chosen the right wine? Why do Italians insist on making their wine labels so hard to understand?

etc. for her | September 2014 47
I can still remember when I was fifteen and asking my Nonna for her “secret” Lasagna Alla Veronese recipe. Her response was, “I’ll tell you only when you are able to understand.” And so, it wasn’t until my twenty-first birthday that she told me the secret to her amazing lasagna was the Beciamella sauce. She said to me, “Write this down: latte, farina, sale.” That’s it? I waited 7 years for “milk, flour, salt!”
Looking back on the simplicity of that recipe and my grandmother’s perception of its complexity, I realize now that she was only protecting the recipe’s integrity. Much like my grandmother’s harboring of the lasagna recipe, Italian wine makers guard their precious vines with their very own lives. Take for example the unbelievable scrutiny and care that the wine producer, Marta Galli of Le Ragose vineyards in Valpolicella takes. Working with her children, Paolo, Marco, and Marina, Marta owns vineyards that are located at the highest point in the Valpolicella zone (1,148 ft.) which was founded in 1969. Slightly north of Verona, this picturesque countryside is ideal for growing Valpolicella’s indigenous grapes, Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara, which are used to create one of the most well known wines of this region: Amarone.
The harvesting and care of the vineyards must be done
by hand as it is impossible to get a tractor to operate on the incline. Harvesting of the grapes takes place in late October, and for the Amarone only the recie, or ears, of the grapes are picked because these are the grapes that have had the highest exposure to the sun and are therefore riper, containing a higher concentration of natural sugars. These grapes are then placed in wooden boxes and are left to dry outside until late February. Can you imagine the first time someone dumped a bunch of grapes into a crate and left them outside for three months? I’m sure everybody thought that the winemaker was crazy, but I guess they thought the same thing about people like Edison, Einstein, and Freud. Well, maybe Freud was crazy.
The point is that this wine-making process is genius. The dried grapes, or raisined grapes, undergo fermentation in temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks and are aged for 1 year in stainless, then 4 - 5 years in Slovenian oak casks. The average production of this wine is 600-700 cases per vintage. Because the wine is made by using the dried grapes, and because the sugar content is high in these grapes, the wine produced is a powerfully jammy wine with a high alcohol percentage (14 – 16%) and dense, ripe fruit on the nose. The Amarone has a lingering finish with dry and tannic qualities,
“The things that we are most passionate about are the things we keep pursuing with all of our heart.”

allowing this wine to be aged for a long time. This is, by far, one of the best wines that I have enjoyed on a number of occasions, one of which was when the representative for Le Ragose vineyards was in town and did a tasting of his wines. After everyone had left the event, the representative “insisted” that I stay and share a bottle of 1997 Le Ragose Amarone with him. After getting my arm twisted, I agreed to stay and enjoyed a nice conversation about Marta Galli and the respect she has gained as a woman in a male-dominated Italian wine industry. Even Marta herself has been quoted as saying, “In wine making, it is not your sex that counts, it is your soul.”
As I conclude this article, I look back to see that my pursuit of answering the question “why” has led me down an interesting road filled with women who I respect, and I honor them here, in my writing. Juliet, my Nonna, and Marta Galli, all linked by the city of Verona, are all strong women who share similar passions for life. And therein lies the answer to my questions, why is wine so special and why does it intrigue me so? The answer was in the questioning: the things that we are most passionate about are the things we keep pursuing with all of our heart. My Nonna wouldn’t want me to do it any other way.

California’s capital city is sometimes overshadowed by the popular cities of San Francisco and Los Angeles, but the
beautiful Sacramento has plenty of treasures of its own to make a visit very worthwhile. With plenty of shopping available in the adorable little gift shops and boutiques of the old town area of Old Sacramento and the giant outlets outside of town, to the plethora of attractions in and around the city to keep travelers entertained, Sacramento is one impressive vacation destination.
For the adventurists, there are plenty of things to do outdoors in and around Sacramento. The American River Parkway is a 23-mile chain of parks on the banks of the American River. Cycling, hiking, and horseback riding are available on its miles of trails, as well as rafting, fishing, and boating. Located where the American and Sacramento rivers meet, the Effie Yeaw Nature Center consists of a 302-acre park providing recreational activities galore. Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is located at the base of the Sierra foothills, and offers 18,000 acres of state park. There is a 32-mile bike path available for cyclists, and boating, sailing, and swimming can be enjoyed at Lake Natoma. Located in downtown Sacramento, William Land Park is home to Sacramento Zoo, Fairytale Town, Funderland, several gardens and trails, and a 9-hole golf course.
The Sacramento Zoo is the largest accredited zoological
park in the Central Valley, and located on over 14 acres. More than 4,000 exotic animals are featured, including red pandas, Sumatran tigers, and snow leopards. Children can learn a lot here with the activities and tours available. Another kid-friendly attraction is the old-fashioned theme park, Fairytale Town. Designed to encourage imaginative play, nursery rhyme sets are available for kids to pretend to be their favorite characters. Live animals reside here as well, such as a cow, a donkey, ducks, goats, and pigs. For more of a ride experience, Funderland is perfect for the younger children, with all of the rides designed for children under 8 years of age. Bumper cars, a mini roller coaster

and train, and teacups are only some of the rides available here. For adults, Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is just 55 miles outside of Sacramento. It is the only facility in America that combines a theme park, an oceanarium, and wildlife exhibits. Sacramento’s largest amusement park is Raging Waters, with attractions such as a five-story interactive water slide called “Shark Attack”, a wading pool, and “Hook’s Lagoon”, an inner-tube ride down some exciting rapids of a man-made river.
Old Sacramento consists of 28 acres of State Historic Park, which is best experienced via a walking tour or a horse-drawn buggy ride. A critical commercial center during the 1840s and 1850s, Old Sacramento offers several attractions such as museums, shops, and restaurants. Just minutes from Old Sacramento is the California Automobile Museum, which displays a complete collection of historic automobiles, all restored to original mint condition. Special exhibits and events provide an enthralling look at the altering face of American automobiles through the 20th century. Any automobile buff will be excited to view this collection. Another intriguing museum

to visit is the California State Railroad Museum, featuring permanent exhibits of historic locomotives and train cars, with on-site theaters showcasing educational films about the history of the items featured in their exhibits. A restored Sacramento Southern Railroad steam train runs along the Sacramento River during the summer months, as well as occasional special theme trains such as Thomas the Tank Engine and the Santa Claus Train.
The inspiring Discovery Museum of Sacramento - Science & Space Center is designed to be thought-provoking and interactive. Kids can encounter living creatures on their trek along a natural trail that winds through 14 acres within the museum, as well as a discovery room with close-up views of turtles, insects, and more. Simulated space missions and other exciting things are featured in the planetarium, and another part of the museum displays Sacramento history and the Gold Rush.

mansion, this museum also offers a variety of entertaining programs for visitors. Yet another attraction highlighting the history of the state of California, the California State Capitol and Museum is the building that has served as the seat of California government since 1869. The Governor’s Mansion was home to thirteen California governors, and guided tours of its Victorian-style rooms with fourteen-foot ceilings with facts and trivia of its past occupants are available today.
For a break from all of the activities, visitors can enjoy a sweet and savory snack from the Freeport Bakery, which is considered by many people to be the best bakery in Sacramento. With popular menu items such as the chocolate cake and the gooey cinnamon rolls, this bakery has been around for more than 25 years. If an entire meal is more of their liking, there are several restaurants worth the experience. No matter what time of day, Fox & Goose has what you are looking for. A variety of beers on tap and food on the menu, this restaurant has beautiful historic ambiance and a broad variety of music available as well. Paragary’s Bar and Oven is a popular establishment, which offers hearty cuisine such as pastas, wood-fired pizzas, meats, and seafood. A waterfall is located on the back patio, and there is an excellent wine list to top off this elegant dining choice.
And don’t forget to visit Blue Diamond Growers Gift Shop and the Jelly Belly Candy Company for some exciting souvenirs to give to your loved ones back home.

To beat the heat, you grab your shorts, and then you see that those familiar marks on your legs. Your varicose veins make
you long for cooler temperatures so you can keep them covered. But do you really have varicose veins? Could they actually be
spider veins instead? I often have patients inquire about treatment for their varicose
veins, only to discover they have spider veins – or even both. So how can you tell?
Defining the DifferenceVaricose veins are twisted, enlarged, bulging veins near the
surface of the skin. Not only can they be unsightly, but they can also be painful.
Causes of varicose veins include genetics, pregnancy, being overweight, and jobs that require standing for long periods of time. If left untreated, varicose veins can progress to more serious medical conditions such as ulceration, bleeding or more rarely, blood clots.
Spider veins, on the other hand, are smaller in size. They are typically red, purple or blue vessels that twist and turn on the skin’s surface. And unlike varicose veins, they are typically painless and rarely cause a more serious health problem.
“Regardless of the severity, remember there are plenty of treatment options available to you,
so you can love your legs. Results can be seen quickly, and recovery is minimal. Don’t suffer
with unnecessary pain and discomfort for too
long because of varicose veins.”

Factors that can cause spider veins include genetics, being overweight, pregnancy, using birth control pills, postmenopausal hormonal replacement, or a history of blood clots.
Finding Relief for a Better LifeNow that you understand the difference between spider
and varicose veins, it’s time to do something about it. In the past, treatment options were painful and it could
take months to recover from the procedure. But we offer a variety of options, including minimally invasive procedures that are performed during a normal clinic visit. For complex cases, surgery may still be required.
Treating Your Legs with TLC
• Sclerotherapy: This outpatient procedure treats varicose and spider veins right in the clinic exam room. A salt solution (typically) is injected directly into the vein, causing it to swell and the blood to clot. Eventually the vessel turns to scar tissue and fades away with time.
• Venous closure: This minimally invasive option treats varicose veins in a clinic setting or hospital outpatient setting if a higher level of sedation is requested. A catheter is used to close off the vein through the use of heat. Blood that would normally run through the vein will instead travel through other veins.
• Endo-phlebectomy: This minimally invasive option treats severe varicose vein conditions in a surgical setting. Patients typically leave the hospital the same day.
• Laser treatment: This procedure is the least invasive treatment option for spider veins and is performed right in a clinic exam room. Through the use of a laser applied on the surface of the skin, blood flow to the vein is stopped. Immediately after the treatment, the vein will resemble a small scratch. Treatment length and number will vary for each patient, but most sessions last about 20 minutes.
If treatments are for cosmetic purposes only, the cost is typically out of pocket. However, if it is a medical necessity to repair your varicose veins, insurance companies will usually cover the cost.
Regardless of the severity, remember there are plenty of treatment options available to you, so you can love your legs. Results can be seen quickly, and recovery is minimal. Don’t suffer with unnecessary pain and discomfort for too long because of varicose veins.

Eight Easy Steps to Picture-Perfect Photo Books
Weddings, birthdays, vacations...marking special occasions with great photography is customary for most of us. One
of my favorite things to do is page through photo albums from the past, imagining the people whose lives were frozen in time just long enough to memorialize a moment. Unfortunately, many of these albums have become fragile and the photos faded with time.
We’re lucky to live in a time when we can preserve special moments – our memories – in photo books.
Today’s technology provides us with simple computer tools to improve the quality of our photos and the materials that make them perfect to pass on for generations. At haroldsphoto.com, it’s easy and fun. With the following eight simple steps, you and your grandchildren will be walking down memory lane for years to come.
1. LOCATE – Find and organize the digital images you want to use for your photo book and put them into a computer folder that’s easy for the photo book software – and you – to find later.
2. BROWSE – To make it easy, haroldsphoto.com has photo book category options, such as wedding, baby and kids and life stories. Look at design thumbnails for ideas, inspiration or to find backgrounds and effects you like. You can choose one of ours – or create an original.
3. LAYOUT – Group the photos that you think go well together, then browse the pre-designed image layout options to choose the one you would like to use. Graphic artists have designed many of the layout options for pleasing combinations. If our layouts don’t work for you, add your own images and text boxes.
4. PLACE – Start choosing photos and text and placing them on the pages. For the best results, limit the amount of text you put on a page and let the images tell the story.
5. CUSTOMIZE – Use a little creativity by adding an image as the background and drop the opacity to 20 percent. Then add an
image box on top of the background image manually. Add a text box and type a caption.
6. COLOR & TONE – Use the color wheel and coordinate editable backgrounds with the tone and color in your images. The software keeps a thumbnail of the colors you choose to apply again and again for consistency.
7. EFFECTS – Once you love the page layout, you can add borders and effects such as changing a photo from full color to black and white. But don’t overdo the effects – sometimes less is more.
8. COVER – Our styles of books have unique covers: the spiral books come in a laminated cardstock or metal cover and fine art books are available in four different linen color options as well as a variety of thread colors for the Japanese stitching. Choose an image, quote or text for the front and back cover of our spiral or hard cover books and be sure it complements the pages.
When you work with Harold’s Photo Experts on your book, rest assured that a graphic artist looks at each book before it’s printed to remove noticeable “red eye” and adjust images when necessary. Once you’ve mastered the art of creating your own photo books, you may want to consider using this amazing technology for books of other kinds. Make a family recipe book with images of the finished dishes, or shoot pictures of your kids’ art
through the years. It’s a better way to keep – and enjoy – all those drawings of rainbows and bugs, Father’s Day handprints and handmade bouquets than stuffing them in a plastic tote in the attic. Photo books also make great gifts.
So you don’t think you’re creative? With our current photo book software, there are so many templates, color palettes and text options built in, you don’t have to have a natural knack – just some ideas of your own and a willingness to let go and have fun!

When Baby Arrives Too EarlySpecialized care provides a bridge to health.
A premature delivery is never in the plans for expectant parents. Yet if it happens, keep in mind that most premature
infants soon grow into healthy babies.About one in every eight babies in the United States, or
approximately 12 percent, are born premature, which is defined as before 37 weeks, or three weeks before the normal gestation of 40 weeks.
The first cure is prevention. Seek out good prenatal care. Maintain good overall health during pregnancy. Don’t use alcohol, smoke or use other substances or medications not approved by your provider.
“Yet for half of moms who go into premature labor, there isn’t a reason. Many have no other health problems,” said Justin Sharp, MD, Neonatologist at Avera Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls.
The amount of care a premature baby needs depends greatly on how early he or she arrives. Babies’ lungs must be developed
enough to be able to breathe well, and lung function is the top issue in prematurity. Plus, premature babies might have to overcome other issues, such as bleeding in the brain, that might impact quality of life in future years.
Avera Children’s has a policy of placing any infant born before 35 weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), even if that baby is doing well. “The best-case scenario is that the baby would stay in the NICU for 48 hours, and then be released from the hospital to go home,” Dr. Sharp said.
The NICU is a specialized unit with a specialized team to care for premature babies, and newborns with other complications or health issues.
“It’s a bridge of care until the baby reaches the age of maturity,” Dr. Sharp said. Along with an expert team, the NICU has specialized equipment, such as incubators that decrease noise and heat loss, and prevent against infections. “There is no replacement for a mother’s womb, but this is our best attempt

to simulate that perfect environment for a baby’s development.”NICU stays vary in length. Just as all individuals are different,
some babies are “fighters” that hold their own earlier than expected. A good rule of thumb is that a premature baby will be in the NICU until around the original due date.
Parents are encouraged to stay as involved as possible in their baby’s care – holding, feeding and diapering the baby when they can. “Kangaroo Care” is an evidence-based practice that involves holding the baby on either the mother’s or father’s bare chest, providing warmth and comfort through skin-to-skin contact.
Breastfeeding is recommended for all newborns. Yet it’s so beneficial for premature infants that neonatologists “prescribe” it, just like they would medicine. If moms can’t pump their own breast milk, donor breast milk is available.
“Breast milk boosts the baby’s immunity, protects the baby against infections and digestive problems, and has components that facilitate growth,” Dr. Sharp said. “Studies also show
“Having a premature baby is a journey that can be like a roller
coaster, with ups and downs. Our job is to help parents keep
their eyes on the goal. There will be steps forward and steps back,
but there’s also a lot of hope. Here in the United States, we’ve

that breastfeeding can improve intellectual ability as the child grows.”
When the time comes near for baby to go home, he or she often “rooms in” with parents in the hospital setting, so parents can practice being “on their own” in a safe environment. The new parents have had a whole team caring for their baby, and all of the sudden, it’s up to them. “We don’t send babies home until we believe that the parents can care for them. Yet sometimes the parents still need to gain confidence and realize that everything will be OK,” Dr. Sharp said. A premature baby might go home with specialized equipment, such as oxygen or a breathing monitor.

There will be steps forward and steps back, but there’s also a lot of hope. Fall Feast Giveaway!
There is something transcending about how you can just feel when fall is upon you. I am not sure if it’s the stillness in the air
or how the shadows stretch longer on the sidewalks. It must be something to do with how the cool breeze dances around you while the leaves crackle under your feet. It’s a sort of calm, that celebrates the end of the magic that is summer. I don’t know what it is about fall, but it’s always been my favorite time of year.
It’s a perfect time to pack up friends and family and head to the local apple orchard. Baskets beckon to be filled with sweet
thoughts of apple pie, apple cakes, apple butter and simmering apple sauce. There is nothing like the sweet crisp bite of an apple that was freshly plucked off a towering tree. Just think of the glorious smiles that climbing up ladders will create as each apple is hand picked. The giggles and wonder will delight young ones as they make special memories. While the light peeks through the leaves, creases are sent to the smiles of those who joyfully recall their first time picking apples. But the best part is coming home with enough apples to share with neighbors or your new favorite teacher.

Sweet Dreams,Baby
Fall, in all its wonder, leaves gifts of harvest at our steps and back doors. It colors our walkways with rich colors of yellow, orange, red, and brown. Its turns down the night sky earlier as we prepare to gather the fruits of our labor over the warm summer months. It shadows us as we walk slower to take in the change of the season while leaves swirl above. Children are completely enthralled by the large squash, the chains of beans, the tilting tomato plants and the rainbow carrots. Getting in the garden and getting dirty is a must in this vegetable excavation, and mud is most definitely a requirement. Dodging dragon flies while pulling up onions, weaving through pokey stems to peel off ripe juicy raspberries and untangling vines of mammoth melons all under the watchful shade of giant sunflowers is fall at its finest.
Tales of whimsical autumn fairies who help animals prepare for cooler weather ahead sets a sincere glimmer in the eyes of those who believe. Building little winter shelters, out of wood or
clay, sets the stage for a fall escapade for fairy winged friends. Creating fun mini acorn dolls using felt is always fun. Gathering leaves of all different shapes and sizes can inspire the inner artist. And with a gentle rub of brightly colored crayons on white paper creates a beautiful fall mural.
Don’t forget the pine cones and all the wonder they hold, with tiny little seeds in each rough brown petal. These are also perfect for making your own pine cone fairies to flutter about.
The gifts of summer are now ready for rest as leaves cover once-bright green grass into a patchwork of color that is raked

AUTUMN ThE
ADORABLE MOUSE
Materials Needed:
Three leaves of the same
size for the body, some
smaller leaves for the ears,
little beechnuts for the eye
and mouth, scissors, glue, and double-sided tape.
Instructions:
Cut the stem from two of the three leaves that are
the same size, then layer the leaves one on top of the
other, leaving the bottoms exposed, with the stem of
the bottom leaf as the tail on one side. Tape the leaves
with double-sided tape. The top leaf should have a
point, which will be the mouse’s nose. Using smaller
leaves, tape one on either side of the body’s top leaf,
these will be the ears. Cut pieces of the leaf stems to
use as the whiskers, and beechnuts for the eye and the
mouth. Use glue to set these in place, and let dry.

CORN COB PENCIL hOLDER
Materials Needed:
Green felt, yellow acrylic paint, white craft glue, cardboard
tube, dried beans (can use yellow beads or pom-pons as
well), scissors, and a paint brush.
Instructions:
Cover only one half of the cardboard tube with glue, then add the dried beans to the glue one
at a time. Once all of the beans are covering the glue, carefully cover the other half of the tube
with more glue and dried beans. Allow the glue to dry completely before the next steps. Using a
paintbrush and yellow craft paint, paint the dried beans on the tube completely yellow, then let
dry. From the green felt, cut a circle about 3/4” larger than the circumference of the tube, then
glue it to the bottom and sides of the tube. Let dry, then cut pieces from the green felt in corn
husk shapes, (similar to teardrop shapes), with the bottoms being straight across. Glue the felt
shapes to the bottom of the corncob, overlapping each one slightly as you make your way around
the tube. Let dry, then use as a decorative fall pencil holder.
GLITTER LEAF
GARLAND
Materials Needed:
Bag of artificial
leaves, paintbrush,
glue, glitter, hole
punch, and ribbon.
Instructions:
Use a paintbrush to apply glue all over the leaf, then sprinkle
glitter on it until it is fully covered. Repeat this for several
leaves. This could get messy, so be sure to do this craft
somewhere you don’t mind glitter getting everywhere. Once
the glue is dry, shake off the excess glitter from each leaf. Next,
use a hole puncher to punch a hole at the bottom center of each
leaf. Attach a ribbon through each hole. Use a longer strand of
ribbon to serve as the top of the garland, and attach the ribbons
from each leaf to this longer piece of ribbon. Hang somewhere
in your home where you will be proud to see it every day during
the beautiful Fall season.
WARM AND FUZZY PUMPkINS
Materials Needed: Fabric (mix it up with fleece or fake fur), scissors, needle, dental floss, short branch, and a plastic shopping bag.
Instructions: Cut a circle from a piece of fabric for each pumpkin, about 8 inches in diameter. Carefully thread a needle with dental floss, then make a sturdy knot several inches from the end. About a half-inch from the outer edge of the circle, make wide stitches around it. Pull the floss to gather the edges, which should create a little pouch. Stuff the pouch with a plastic shopping bag to create a little pumpkin. Place a short branch into the hole at the top, creating a stem. Pull the floss and knot it so that the fabric is securely cinched around the branch. Repeat these steps to create several warm and fuzzy pumpkins!

Lady Liberty: A Biographyby Doreen RappaportIt begins in 1865 as a romantic idea, but ten years later Édouard Laboulaye’s dream catches fire and takes shape. Sculptor Auguste Bartholdi gives the dream the form of a lady, holding a torch to “enlighten the world.” Engineers, plasterers, carpenters, coppersmiths — many of them immigrants — work together to turn the lady into a monument over 100 feet tall. Joseph Pulitzer calls on readers to help fund a pedestal, and hundreds send in nickels, dimes, and even roosters for the cause. Doreen Rappaport’s historically accurate, poetic vignettes and Matt Tavares’s magnificent images remind us of the true origins of a national symbol —and show that it took a lot of people to make the Lady.Ages 8 yrs - 12 yrsCandlewick Press

The Brilliant World of Tom Gatesby Liz PichonMeet Tom Gates. When his teachers don’t have their beady eyes on him, he likes to draw pictures and write about stuff, like last summer’s worst camping vacation ever (five merits!), or how much he hates sitting next to nosy Marcus Meldrew, the most annoying boy at school. All Tom really wants is to score tickets to see the best band ever, Dude3, when they come to town, and to impress Amy Porter, who is very nice and smart (but is currently ignoring him). Tom’s teachers think he is easily distracted and “lacks focus,” but that’s a bit harsh —can he help it if his grumpy big sister, Delia, made him late for school (again), or that last night’s homework had to be sacrificed to stave off a vicious dog attack? Master of excuses, creative storyteller, and middle-school comedian extraordinaire, Tom Gates is guaranteed to get kids turning the pages — and keep them laughing.Ages 8 yrs - 12 yrsCandlewick Press

“Don’t let your children miss out on the joy of wagging tails, sloppy kisses and a great game of fetch.”
etc. for her | September 2014 91
As a parent, we do anything we can to make sure that our kids are healthy, happy and reach for their dreams. It starts
with diapers and ends at some apparent age of 40-50 years old. For as every parent knows, there is no finish line for being a mom or a dad.
Raising children can be a stressful task. We try to make sure they are healthy and fed as well as possible. It seems like our main purpose is to haul them to sporting events, dance class and music lessons like a well-oiled transit system. In today’s world, we try to give our children as much opportunity as possible.
In the quest to be perfect parents, the hectic lifestyle we have created can be difficult for our kids. There may be so much activity and energy spent, that true conversations may never occur. That is where pets play into the equation of raising children.
Pets give unconditional love. They do not care what kind of clothes you wear, the team that you are on or if your hair is the right style. Society can place a lot of pressure on kids today and they need someone to listen.
If you have raised pets with children, you have seen them visit with them. A faithful dog will listen intently, apply some kisses and keep secrets forever. They will also ask and give affection without judgment. It may cost a bite of pizza crust, but that is a small price to pay for companionship. Cats and goldfish also
listen intently to their conversations, but a goldfish is not very warm to hug.
The statement of “Every boy needs a dog” is not far from the truth. It gives them someone to play ball, take walks, wrestle and watch movies with. On the other hand, many dogs have been willing models for being dressed up, invited to tea parties and confided in about the new boy in class.
On the medical side of childhood, studies show that allergies and asthma are less in children raised with pets. The wet kisses, occasional shedding and muddy paws give their immune system something to work on. It appears that early in life, small challenges to the immune system from pets help it work better.
Not every dog or cat is right for your family. It is very important that energy levels, exercise needs and body size are taken into account when selecting a new pet for your home. The personality of the pet is also very important. If it is from a traditionally high activity or aggressive breed, you run a high risk of getting a pet that would not be ideal for you. Choosing well will reduce your stress, but a poor choice will only add to the wild and hectic life of raising kids.
Don’t let your children miss out on the joy of wagging tails, sloppy kisses and a great game of fetch. It will be good for them to care for a loving being and in return they will have a friend that never spills the beans.

Early geologic research into glacial deposits indicated that during the Ice Age there were only four periods of glaciation in North America. Today
fourteen periods of glaciation are recognized. Deposits from five of these episodes are found in Minnehaha County. From the most recent to the earlier episodes they are named: Late Wisconsin, Illinoian, and pre-Illinoian 1, 2, and 3.
The Cactus Hills are composed of sand and gravel deposits left more than 300,000 years ago by streams flowing from a receding pre-Illinoian glacier. They mark the point where the ice front stalled before continuing its retreat.
Originally the outwash deposits were more extensive, but subsequent erosion by late Wisconsin meltwater removed much of the original deposit. Remnants of the deposit, of which the Cactus Hills are a part, are found at higher elevations on both sides of the Big Sioux River Valley.
Geologically the Cactus Hills are part of a series of kames and terraces extending to the northeast toward Garretson, SD.

First Ice Age MapProfessor T. C. Chamberlin prepared this map of the extent of glaciation in North America during the Ice Age. Until the middle of the 19th Century, scientists believed that “erratics,” large boulders scattered across Northern Europe, had been carried there by the huge currents from the Biblical deluge of Noah’s time.

Model of a GlacierWhen glaciers grow, they eventually become too large for their collecting grounds, and the glacier ice begins to flow downhill. Soon the lower parts of a glacier enter an area which is warmer, and the ice begins to melt away. The upper parts of glacier surfaces are still in the area of greatest snow addition while the lower parts are the main area of ice loss.
