Easter is THE Major Feast Day in our Christian Year. It is the day when God does what only God can do, Save Us! It

is the day when the final obstacle is defeated, death. It is the moment in history when everything changes for the better. It is for us to believe that God loves us, and all the world, so much that He GAVE life and light to us FOREVER. This great Feast Day comes with a cost for each of us who believe.

My work in life is to be helpful to you on this path of Resurrection. My work is to make your Baptismal Promises come to life and have life’s deepest meaning for you. Every Lenten season you should spend time reviewing and reaffirming these promises. When I speak to parents and sponsors (godparents) of those who are Baptized these are the focus of their responsibilities.

“Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in the prayers?” This promise is the centerpiece of my faith and the true marks of the Church. As events are planned here it is from these words that we make sure we are on track. When I report to the Vestry and to the Parish it is from this early promise that I find the truest meaning for my personal life and for the life of the parish.

“Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?” Too often we think of “evil” as some major shortcoming in our lives. In fact it is idolatry of self. When life becomes all about “me” and “what I want” then “evil” is lurking close by. To avoid this trap Jesus teaches us about “come unto me all you who travail and are heavy laden” and therein lies God’s answer to the great temptations of life.

“Will you proclaim by word and example the Good &ews of God in Christ?” Your life is a “proclamation” of either God’s way or another way. Serving your Lord in countless ways is a “proclamation”. “As you did these things unto the least of these you did it unto me” Jesus says and thus is to be our “Proclamation of the Good News” that Easter shouts out!

“Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?” It is Jesus who taught/teaches us about who is our “neighbor”. As I attended the Anti-Racism Seminar recently I was again reminded of the little ways that I ignore and demean those who are my neighbors. Choir Notes Joan Ernst, Director

During April we move through the emotionally intense season of Passiontide into Easter and the celebration

of Christ’s Resurrection. There is a plethora of music for this time of year and the challenge of choosing our offerings for the various services is one I welcome each year. While researching I discovered the following carol by Tchaikovsky, with a stunning and unique text by Pleshcheev, a contemporary of Tchaikovsky:

THE CROW& OF ROSES ♪♫ When Jesus Christ was yet a child, he had a garden small and wild,

Wherein he cherished roses fair, and wove them into garlands there. &ow once, as summertime drew nigh, there came a troop of children by, And seeing roses on the tree, with shouts they plucked them merrily. “Do you bind roses in your hair?” they cried, in scorn, to Jesus there. The boy said humbly: “Take, I pray, all but the naked thorns away.”

Then of the thorns they made a crown, and with rough fingers pressed it down, Till on his forehead fair and young red drops of blood like roses sprung,

Like roses sprung. ♫♪ Trinity Bells will be joining us for Palm Sunday service. On Monday of Holy Week we will be singing at the

noontime community service in the Baptist church. We’ll also be singing for our 5:30pm Maundy Thursday service. On Easter morning our offertory will be the beloved “Hallelujah” chorus from Handel’s Messiah. We invite any

parishioner with choral experience who has sung this to join us. If you are interested in joining us for the Hallelujah chorus, please see me or email me at [email protected].

Outreach Dan Westra, Chairman

During this season of Lent our loose plate offering is being directed to the Episcopal

Farmworker Ministry. God teaches us that we are called to respond for the dignity and justice for all human beings and Episcopal Farmworker Ministry (EFwM) is working with such principles to ensure a better future for farmworkers and their families. Through education, the protection of their human rights, and the care of their bodies and souls, EFwM works to change the world and the system that keeps farmworkers in poverty and subhuman conditions.

In our diocese, Newton Grove is the focal point for providing comfort, care, education and support to the large farmworker community based near there. Please be generous in supporting this outreach opportunity of our Parish.

Stewardship Dick Mohler, &on-Chairman

You have heard that we are a congregation with older members than most other churches.

Most of our membership has served on committees, vestries, church councils, choirs, and groups as member of churches of various denominations, all around this country, for many, many, many years. Not always Episcopal, maybe never Episcopalian, before you came to Hertford. Your participation in these groups was essential to keep a congregation functioning; and it still is.

In the past January Trumpet we reported on the following; "Our Journey To Christian Giving" for 2014 continues. Our committee wants to thank the 71%

of the congregation donors who submitted pledge cards for 2014 and the 72% of our individual members who volunteered their time and talents to work on at least one of the 35 different opportunities made available. It is your support that enables Holy Trinity to function and to be a supporting force of those in need in our community."

So what has happened since January? We have had many of our members who were willing to support the work of our committees are still willing, but not as head of the committee. Been there, done that. It's time for the younger folks to take over. Well my friends, WE are the younger folks. WE are the ones who are needed to continue the work of Church.

Stewardship, always a toughie, and Evangelism committees need to be functional. Maybe we can do what the Men's Group has decided. No leader, all followers. Meet to discuss what has to be done, set goals and then work together to accomplish those goals. Pat Smith and I have decided that we will be on the Stewardship Committee without a chairperson, not co-chairs. Will this work? Of course it will, maybe better, less stress. This organizational chart allows room for additional members who will also not be chair persons.

We need some members to do the same with Evangelism. Our Evangelism Committee spreads the Good News of Holy Trinity and brings in new members to our fold. You can be a non-chair member and enjoy the fruits of working with our own membership. When you are asked to participate as a member, it will be a given, you will not be chairperson (unless you really want to be).

We need everyone's support.

Through the Glass Lightly, Part Three Raymond A. Winslow, Jr., Historian

In 1857 Holy Trinity Parish had approximately one hundred twenty parishioners, most of them living in the countryside. Although many of them had landed wealth, there was not much cash available in an agricultural community. Faced with the necessity of replacing four windows in the church building, the parish might have decided to make the least expensive repairs or to reproduce what was lost as nearly as possible. Instead, the parish chose to approach one of the foremost ecclesiastical artists in the United States and to install the best new windows it could procure.

Rector William E. Snowden left us the only known account of the matter in his parochial report to the Convention of the Diocese of North Carolina in May 1858:

"Four windows of this Church having been destroyed by a violent wind last Fall, their places have been filled with stained glass; i.e. the triplet in the Chancel contains emblems significant of the great Christian verities, and the other window in the West end is beautifully ornamented, having a rich border filled with a ground-work of fleur de lis. The effect of these four windows is very excellent. They are quiet but ceaseless teachers: they ‘rain a religious influence’ in the holy place, and sober and soften and elevate the feelings of those who come to worship there."

"I cannot omit to express my satisfaction, I might say my gratitude, to the manufacturer of this work, Owen Doremus, Esq. of New Jersey, who, for the small sum of one hundred dollars, has done so much for us."

How the parish managed to hire one of the leading stained glass artists in the nation is unknown. The rector (a native of New Jersey) had siblings in New York and the diocese had connections with church architects and designers of ornaments, almost all of which were in the north, so it was probably inevitable that Doremus would be known but more fortuitous that he would be approached and hired for the work.

Owen Doremus will be the subject of the next part of our story.
