The last decade has been a rollercoaster ride. Since they were first published in 2004, QS World University Rankings have captured the imagination of prospective students, ranked and non-ranked institutions, policymakers, govern-ments and the public at large. In that time, we have also seen a revolution in the typical capa-bility of institutions to gather data and evaluate their own performance.

On the other hand, decisions and actions taken on the strength of league tables alone sometimes seem to be disproportionate to the implications of the results. And even as rankings have become more established and their nov-elty value has diminished, they have nonethe-less lost none of their ability to stir up the most impassioned debate. What is it about a simple ranking table that makes it so compelling?

Ultimately it speaks to the way the mind works. As Umberto Eco has written, “The list is the origin of culture. How does one attempt to grasp the incomprehensible? Through lists.” Universities are diverse and complex organiza-tions that are integrated into the very fabric of the nations, societies, communities and econo-mies in which they operate. The distillation of their value into a single integer is, from one point of view, nonsensical; but from another, this very complexity is what makes a simple comparative assessment such a necessity.

The absence of an absolute truth ensures the inherently controversial nature of the rankings. Argument and debate ensues between husband and wife, parent and child, employer and recruit, government and university president about which institutions are actually better, and which league table does a better job of reflect-ing the facts as they see them. George Box once wrote, “Essentially all models are wrong, but some are useful”. So maybe we should cau-tion all of the above listed combatants to cool it: in a sense, you’re all as wrong as each other.

Nonetheless, QS takes its responsibilities extremely seriously, recognizing that no matter how hard we try, it is likely that some people will use our work in ways we wouldn’t inde-pendently advocate if consulted. We strive hard each year to make the results still more robust and accurate and have put substantial emphasis on drilling down to a discipline level and add-ing institutions to our main exercise in order to increase its relevance and precision. And the hard work is beginning to pay off in terms of external reference and recognition.

In the last few months our work has been ref-erenced by the Economist Intelligence Unit for their Sea Turtles Index, and INSEAD, Cornell and WIPO for their Global Innovation Index. Our various evaluations have been scrutinized in the EUA’s second report on rankings, and all of our institution rankings have successfully been through an external audit at the hands of IREG. Such recognition has been particularly gratifying.

From a personal standpoint however, perhaps the most rewarding moment of the past few years was returning to my alma mater, the Uni-versity of Nottingham, to find its inclusion in the top 75 in our rankings proudly declared at each of the entrances to its various campuses.

Perhaps the biggest development in this year’s results is the inclusion of over 100 new institu-tions. Up or down, herein feature the top 4% of the world’s universities. Among them are the probable origins of much of mankind’s most influential future creative, technological and medical advances. Dazzling, infuriating, com-plex, inefficient, brilliant, chaotic and inspiring all at the same time, every one of them is a privileged place to be.

Students are continuing to gravitate towards higher education’s global elite, the latest edi-tion of the QS World University Rankings demonstrates.

The top 100 universities in the 2013/14 rank-ings have almost nine per cent more interna-tional students than last year. Even in an era of continuing rapid growth in higher education around the world, increases on such a scale suggest that students are placing a premium on quality and universities are happy to respond.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) remains the top-ranked university, hav-ing taken over the leadership for the first time last year. It also heads the faculty-level ranking for engineering and technology, and is second in the natural sciences. In the QS World Uni-versity Rankings by Subject published in May, MIT topped seven of the 30 tables.

Harvard, which topped the QS World Univer-sity Rankings for the first six years in which they were published, has moved back into sec-ond place at the expense of Cambridge. Har-vard was the most successful university in May’s subject rankings, topping ten of the tables, and leads today in the life sciences and medicine, and the social sciences and management.

However, UK universities still register a strong performance in the 2013/14 rankings, filling four of the top six places. University College London and Imperial College London join Oxford in the leading group, with Edinburgh and King’s College London also appearing in the top 20.

The institutional ranking continues to be ex-tremely stable, with only one university drop-ping out of the top 50 and four leaving the top 100. The volatility of some international rank-ings has been a frequent source of criticism, but the average movement in the top 100 is less than 3.5 places, down from 4.6 last year.

Nunzio Quacquarelli, the founder and manag-ing director of QS, said: “The extra stability in this year’s rankings will be good news for the countless students across the world who rely on them to narrow down their choices. As more and more people compete for places at the top universities, it is the responsibility of ranking organisations to ensure that what they produce is transparent and accurate. As the first global ranking to have been accredited by IREG- In-ternational Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence, we are living up to that.”

American universities continue to dominate the top of the rankings, taking more than half of the leading 20 places, but there is much greater diversity beyond that. They represent less than a third of the top 100 and exactly a quarter of the top 200. Thirteen of the 19 US universities in the top 50 have gone down this year, albeit only by a single place in many cases.

Stanford, by contrast, has produced the biggest rise of any university at the top of the rank-ing, moving up from 15th to seventh. But big budget cuts at state universities since the 2008 recession may be having an impact: of the 84 US institutions in the top 400, a total of 27 have improved their position this year, while 52 have dropped.

As usual, the UK is second only to the US in the number of highly-ranked universities. Like last year, it has 18 in the top 100 and 29 in the top 200. Despite each dropping one place in the institutional ranking, Oxford is placed top for the arts and humanities, while Cambridge is the leader in the natural sciences.

After several years in the doldrums, Continen-tal European universities are enjoying a resur-gence. It is led by Switzerland, which now has two universities in the top 20, following a leap of 10 places by Ecole Polytechnique Federal de Lausanne (EPFL). ETH Zurich is the highest-placed university outside the English-speaking world, having moved up to 12th.

The Netherlands has two more universities than last year in the top 100, and all six have improved their positions this year. Although Germany still has only Heidelberg in the top 50, eight of its 13 universities in the top 200 have gone up this year. France has two univer-sities in the top 50 and 19 in the top 400 and, while Italy still has no institutions in the top 100, every one of its representatives in the top 400 has moved up this year, some by as much as 50 places. In Scandinavia, Norway now has University of Oslo in the top 100, the highest-placed of four new entrants to that group, while Denmark has the University of Copen-hagen in the top 50, the sole new entrant there.

Elsewhere, the trends are less clear-cut. Some Asian universities have continued their progress up the rankings - National University of Sin-gapore has overtaken University of Hong Kong to become the continent’s leading institution, for example - but none has reached the top 20 and there is little sign of the wholesale advance predicted by many commentators. There are special circumstances in Hong Kong, where a double cohort of students has put the seven ranked universities at a temporary disadvantage. But only two of Japan’s 24 universities in the top 600 have gone up this year.

China’s universities, led by Peking University and Tsinghua University in the top 50, have fared better, but there are still only 11 in the top 400. There is a mixed picture in South Ko-rea, which has Seoul National University and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in the top 60. In India, five Indian Institutes of Technology are the country’s only representatives in the top 400.

Australia still has seven universities in the top 100, but several of its lower-ranked institutions have dropped this year. The same is true in Canada, where Toronto has overtaken McGill to become the leading university for the first time since QS World University Rankings were first published in 2004.

The progress made by universities in the Mid-dle East has not been maintained in the latest rankings, except in Israel, which now has three universities in the top 200. But there have been further advances in Latin America, especially in

Brazil, where ten universities are ranked for the first time. The wait for broader global recogni-tion goes on in Africa, where the University of Cape Town has moved into the top 150, but the American University in Cairo is the only institution outside South Africa in the top 500.

The published rankings include classifications to enable readers to choose between univer-sities of different sizes, ages and degrees of specialization. California Institute of Technol-ogy is the leading small university, for example, while Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is the youngest institution in the top 40.

20 2013/14 QS World University Rankings® www.topuniversities.com

If the world has changed since the start of the Global Economic Crisis in 2008, we might im-agine that the globalised world of higher edu-cation would have changed as well. Five years on, what do the 2013/14 QS World University Rankings suggest has been the biggest change?

One surprise, perhaps, is that global higher education continues to grow despite the in-ternational economic damage that we have all seen since the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008. In 2009 there were just over 3.7 million students studying outside their home country, according to the OECD publication Education at a Glance. In 2011, the latest year for which we have the numbers, the total was 4.3 million. 53% were from Asia, mainly India, China and Korea.

Something else that has changed little in the recession years has been the pecking order of desirable destinations for international, and indeed national, students. Of our top 20 uni-versities in 2008, 16 are in the top 21 for 2013. Perhaps the most notable change is not MIT’s move from ninth to top place, but the appear-ance of ETH and EPFL from Switzerland in the top 20.

In 2008 we published a ranking of only 200 universities, which limits our current ability to see change lower down in the system. How-ever, this tighter focus on the top institutions has some clear messages.

One of the most distinct is in Asia, where big winners and losers are all too apparent. In 2008 there were 10 Japanese universities in the top 200, starting with Tokyo in 19th place. There are still nine but Tokyo is in 32nd place. From being Asia’s top university five years ago, it is now behind institutions in Singapore and Hong Kong.

Like Japan in general, the picture for Japanese higher education is one of genteel decline. The same cannot be said of its ambitious neighbour

Korea. It now has six top-200 universities, up from three in 2008. Seoul National, its top university, is in 35th place, up from 50 in 2008, and at this rate may well overtake Tokyo some time soon.

Over five years, it is also possible to see whether China’s growing economic reach is reflected in the standing of its education system. The answer is not an emphatic yes. In 2008, China had six top-200 universities. Its leading institution, Peking, was tied with Seoul National in 50th place. This year it has one more, but Peking is only four places higher than five years ago.

By contrast, both sets of rankings agree on the lowly international standing of Indian higher education, and between them show its failure to progress in the past five years. India had two ranked institutions, the Indian Institutes of Technology in Delhi and Bombay, in 2008. They were in 154th and 175th positions respectively. In 2013, these remain India’s top institutions, but have fallen to 222 and 233 respectively. The top general university in the country, Delhi, is in 447th position.

A consistent tale to emerge from these rank-ings is the poor standing of many continental European universities. They fare badly by com-parison with their UK counterparts, despite being in a rich, stable part of the world with a massive cultural and scientific heritage and with strong school systems. But we are seeing some signs of change. ETH Zurich, for long the top continental university, is now 12th in the world, and is the highest-ranked university not to work mainly in English. It was 24th in 2008. Its francophone sister institution EPFL is 19th this year. Interestingly, Ireland has made little of the natural advantage of English, with only two top-200 universities in 2008 and to-day. The better-placed of these, Trinity College Dublin, has fallen from 49 to 61 between 2008 and today.

The well-liked education systems of small-country Europe, including Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden, continue to feature strongly in the middle order of these rankings. More of a surprise is that France had only four top-200 universities in 2008 and has only one more now. Although the Ecole Normale Su-perieure was in 28th place in both years, it has little elite company. By contrast, Germany had 11 ranked universities in 2008 and manages 13 in the top 200 today.

It is also indisputable that today’s QS World University Rankings tell us far more than our more limited 2008 edition allowed. For exam-ple, we are now able to see excellent universi-ties in Indonesia, the world’s fourth most popu-lous nation. There are eight in this year’s far deeper rankings, there having been none in the more limited 2008 version. The same applies to Russia, which had only one ranked institu-tion in 2008, in Eastern Europe, and in former Soviet states such as Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

The picture is more varied in the southern hemisphere. The Australian university system has always been obviously world-class, although the Australian National University has fallen from 16 in 2008 to 27 today. In Latin America, we found only three top-200 universities in 2008, but today’s more exhaustive rankings show world-class universities across the region. They are led by Sao Paulo in Brazil at 127, up from 196 five years ago.

The 2008 rankings also contained just one African university, Cape Town at 177. In 2013, Cape Town is at 145. It is still Africa’s top insti-tution, and South Africa still has the continent’s only university system of significance on the world stage.

These rankings also allow the emergence of higher education systems in the Middle East to be seen more clearly. In 2008, the region was represented only by three Israeli universities. There are now Saudi universities just below the top 200, and they have the resources they need to expand massively in the next few years.

MIT may have cemented its position at the top of the global academic tree in this year’s QS World University Rankings, but it seems that in the job market the historic reputation of the UK’s two oldest institutions still holds con-siderable sway. University of Oxford tops the employer reputation survey this year, while its rival University of Cambridge secures second. Last year’s number one, Harvard University, drops down to third.

The QS employer reputation survey forms 10% of the overall rankings score, and is based on a major global survey of some 27,000 graduate employers. Respondents are asked to identify the universities that they regard as produc-ing the best graduates. The results provide a unique insight into the global hierarchy as it stands in the eyes of a group of stakeholders who, perhaps more than any other, play a role in determining the value of a degree in the job market.

As in previous years, the results show that the position of a university in the overall table does not necessarily correspond with the esteem in which it is held by international employ-ers. Oxford and Cambridge are outmuscled by MIT and Harvard in terms of research strength, but their longstanding reputation as producers of top graduate talent remains undented.

Indeed, the employer reputation of many UK universities is stronger than their overall performance. Five UK universities make the top ten for employer reputation, one more than the US. Oxford and Cambridge are joined by London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Imperial College London and The University of Manchester.

MIT joins fellow Cambridge, Massachusetts institution Harvard in the top five, with two California universities, Stanford and Berkeley, also making the top ten. They are joined by

Australia’s University of Melbourne, breaking up the US-UK whitewash at the top of the table.

The performance of UK universities shows that employers around the world recognize the value of a UK degree. Yet it is notable that the hierarchy of UK universities in the eyes of employers differs significantly from that of the overall rankings. For example, whereas UCL ranks fourth in the overall QS World Universi-ty Rankings and second in the UK, employers place it seventh, behind Oxford, Cambridge, LSE, Imperial, University of Manchester and University of Warwick.

Similarly, though the University of Chicago is the fifth highest ranked US university overall, it is only the 11th most popular amongst inter-national employers. Employers show a higher regard for the graduates of Ivy League schools Columbia, Princeton and Cornell – all institu-tions whose world-class credentials are beyond question, but which rank below University of Chicago in the overall table. When it comes to employer reputation, the ‘brand name’ of the Ivy Leagues and Oxbridge is clearly still a powerful advantage.

Outside of the famous US and UK institu-tions, the results give prospective students a valuable indication of which institutions in a given country possess a reputation that extends beyond their national borders. University of Melbourne is Australia’s star performer, with overall top-ranked institution Australia National University surprisingly outperformed by University of New South Wales, Monash University and University of Sydney.

In Canada, University of Toronto has a very slight edge over McGill University, but the two are clearly established as the country’s most internationally well-regarded institutions. Uni-versity of British Columbia and University of Waterloo are the only other Canadian institu-tions to make the top 100.

Whereas Mainland China is outperformed by Hong Kong’s top institutions in the overall rankings, the tables are turned in the employer survey, with Peking University and Tsinghua University ranking third and fourth in Asia respectively. Yet both are beaten by National University of Singapore, Asia’s number one university in both the overall and employer reputation tables, as well as Japan’s University of Tokyo.

ETH Zurich has in recent years established itself as the world’s premier institution that doesn’t operate primarily in English, and employers have recognized it as the number one institution in Continental Europe. Fellow tech-focused institution Ecole Polytechnique ParisTech ranks second, just ahead of Germa-ny’s Technische Universität München.

And the considerable advances made by leading Latin American universities in recent years have led to an increase in recognition among em-ployers. However, it is Argentina’s Universidad de Buenos Aires, rather than the continent’s overall top-ranked institution Universidade de São Paulo (USP), that is regarded as the best source of graduate talent.

WHy MeaSURe eMPloyeR RePUTaTIon?

QS is the only major international ranking compiler that takes into account the views of graduate employers.

The employer reputation component is in some ways the only aspect of the rankings that might be called purely subjective. Unlike the employer reputation component, the academic reputation survey is a snapshot of the consensus of opinion among people who are by defini-tion experts: the global academic community. Academics are asked to identify the leading universities for research within their field of expertise.

While responses vary even between academics within a given field and region, it is nonethe-less clearly within the remit of an academic to be aware of where the most significant work in their field is currently taking place. And despite being criticized by some who prefer a more ‘objective’ data-driven approach to rankings, the academic reputation survey is actually the most stable component of the rankings in terms of year-on-year volatility.

The graduate recruiters included in the em-ployer reputation survey do not have this level of expertise on the strengths and weaknesses of universities. Nonetheless, as a group they do have one major advantage: a direct, tangible impact on the future prospects of graduates. Academics may be the experts, but in the long run for many graduates it is employers whose opinions really count.

The individual employers who respond to the survey probably will not be those that are responsible for the job application of a given student consulting the QS rankings. But the consensus of opinion that emerges from a large sample of global employers – over 27,000 in 2013–gives students an unparalleled insight into the global hierarchy as it is seen by those who in effect decide upon the real-world value of a given degree.

The mass expansion of international student mobility has been a global trend over the last 30 years, and the latest data from QS Intel-ligence Unit shows that it has accelerated again this year.

International enrolments at the top 400 uni-versities in the QS World University Rankings grew by 80,000 this year to a total of 1.37 million. This represents an average of ap-proximately 3,400 international students per institution, up from 3,225 in 2012–an annual growth of 6.5%.

The trend is even more evident among the elite top 100 institutions, where international enrolments grew by 9% to an average of ap-proximately 5,100 per institution.

The correlation between higher rank position and a larger international student cohort is evident across the full range of 700 plus institu-tions in the QS World University Rankings 2013 (see table below). While the proportion of international students is one of the rankings criteria, it is weighted at just 5% when calculat-ing a university’s overall score. The extent of the correlation shows that the positive impact of international students clearly extends into other areas such as academic and employer reputation.

This general link between institutional quality and relatively higher numbers of international students is also supported by a comparison with the OECD’s Education at a Glance report. Data covers the bulk of the world’s 17,000 higher education institutions (HEIs) and for 2011 shows there were 4.3 million in-ternational higher education students, a growth of 4.8% over the previous year.

The link between quality and increased in-ternational student intake is perhaps evidence of the wider contribution they make to the student experience, creating a more vibrant classroom and campus environment. This was

the premise behind QS’s decision to include the international students indicator in the rank-ings when they were first conceived a decade ago. It is also likely that there is a circular effect at play whereby increased enrolments lead to improved institutional reputation, which in turn drives a higher ranking position and cre-ates more interest from prospective students, and so on.

In an era where the international dimension is core business for all world-class HEIs, and the internationalization of research, teaching and community engagement is carefully considered in strategic planning processes, the QS data-set on student mobility is an important addition to the evidence base. While it doesn’t indicate where the students are coming from or what programs they are undertaking, it is the most current view on mobility at the institutional level globally.

Most of the mobility data such as Education at a Glance, IIE’s Open Doors, the British Council, and so on, tends to have a fairly long time lag to publication. The QS data, which is current to within weeks or a few months rather than many months or years, offers a more current insight into global trends.

Beyond the global result, points of interest in 2013 include:

In the United Kingdom international enrol-ments at the 45 institutions in the top 400 increased 20% in 2013 to an average of 5,200. This is by far the highest growth rate among the major English-speaking recipient countries,

and may be the result of the emphasis English universities have placed on international stu-dent recruitment as a risk mitigation strategy surrounding the uncertainties associated with the successive increases in domestic under-graduate tuition fees over the past decade. Next year’s result will be keenly watched as it is widely thought that recruitment is negatively impacted by recent changes to student visa and post-study work rights policies.

Growth among the leading US institutions at 7% was about the global average, while growth at Canadian institutions in the top 400 was slightly slower at 5.5%. However, the capac-ity for growth in Canada is not as great, as Canadian institutions already have the highest average enrolments (5,950 in the top 400 and 9,770 in the top 100) among the major recipi-ent countries. This is slightly ahead of Australia (7,567 in top 400 and 9,270 in top 100) and well ahead of the US (3,000 in top 400 and 3,900 in top 100).

The downturn in international tertiary educa-tion enrolments in Australia in recent years is well documented. It is largely the result of policy crackdowns to flush out bogus colleges and non-legitimate students, alongside a sharp rise in costs as the dollar appreciated over the course of an extended positive economic cycle. These factors contributed to a deep decline in international tertiary enrolments. However, the QS data confirms that the higher education sector was less impacted, with enrolments for institutions in the top 400 down 2.2% and the top 100 up 1% in 2013. With the pressure now coming off the dollar, and visa and migration reforms that favour international students in place, it is widely predicted that Australia is poised to continue to win back some of its market share.

The rise of Chinese institutions in recent years in the QS World University Rankings and other international assessments is mirrored in the 38% growth of the international cohort at the 10 Chinese institutions in the top 400. Much of the mobility in China is from within the immediate region (e.g. South Korea, Japan and Russia), but recently established Ameri-

can and European study abroad and exchange programs will also be contributing.

In contrast, the rankings success of the leading South Korean universities in recent years is not yet obviously reflected in the international student indicator, with the leading group of institutions growing by an aggregate 6% from a small base.

For world-class universities the recruitment of international students is a strategic priority that variably contributes to the internationalization and strengthening of teaching, research and the campus environment. It is also often a financial priority through the application of premium international student tuition fees. Over the last few decades it has become an increasingly competitive space for HEIs and significant re-sources are applied towards achieving ambitious targets. It is also a priority area, which struggles to find timely data to support planning pro-cesses. The QS dataset has matured over the last decade and now provides a unique and timely view of international student mobility.

This is the tenth edition of the World Uni-versity Rankings. The first nine were accom-panied by a ranking of universities at faculty level, based upon academic opinion of their quality. But this year we are breaking with this approach, with the introduction of a new and more powerful faculty-level analysis.

These new rankings use a similar approach to our well-regarded QS World University Rankings by Subject, but apply it to the five principal areas of academic life: arts and hu-manities, social sciences and management, the natural sciences, life sciences and medicine, and engineering and technology.

This new analysis uses four measures of quality. The first two are the academic and employer review which feed the QS World University Rankings, gathered by QS in a unique and

powerful global survey. The third is citations, the frequency with which research from a specific university is referred to in academic literature. Finally we add the H Index for each university in the subjects in question. This is a measure of the volume and quality of research. It works by calculating the number of papers from an institution with at least the same number of citations. So if University X has 28 papers in biomedicine with 28 or more cita-tions, its H Index for biomedicine is 28. These two measures use data from Elsevier, which is also the data supplier to the main QS World University Rankings.

As with our subject rankings, we weight the importance of these measures differently for different areas of academic life. Because of its ruthless publish-or-perish culture, citations and the H-Index are weighted at 25 per cent

each in biomedicine, and at 20 per cent in the similarly vigorous world of the natural sciences. In the arts and humanities, where papers and citations are less important and other forms of publication count for more, we weight citations and the H-Index at only 10 per cent each and academic opinion at 60 per cent.

The overall results of this analysis are kind to US and UK universities. If we look at the top 10 in each faculty area, we find that they occupy 42 of the 50 available positions, with global names such as Cambridge, Oxford, Har-vard and MIT placed prominently. However, our decision to publish the top 400 universi-ties in each area means that universities across the world are ranked here, including some in regions such as Latin America and the Middle East that we might expect to emerge more strongly in future years.

This is the first time we have published this analysis, and we welcome your response.

Science and technology focused universities have made their presence felt in the top 50 of the QS World University Rankings this year. Building on its league table lead from last year, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continues to be the world’s top-ranked institu-tion. Other science and technology oriented universities have strengthened their positions, including Imperial College London, which advanced from 6th to 5th place this year, Cali-fornia Institute of Technology (CALTECH) ranking at 10th place, ETH Zurich shifting up to 12th place, and the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), progressing an impressive 10 places to 19th this year. With almost all science and technology focused institutions either maintaining their position or advancing in the QS World University Rank-ings, it is clear that universities focusing on the so-called STEM subjects – science, technol-ogy, engineering and mathematics – are in the ascendancy.

This is not surprising. STEM subjects have long been instrumental in building knowledge-based economies that thrive on innovation and production. With a global knowledge-based economy in full swing, the demand for specialized skills in the STEM subjects has skyrocketed in recent years. In the UK alone,

the number of jobs to be filled that require degree-level training in science and technol-ogy oriented subjects is expected to exceed 100,000 per year, according to a recent study conducted by the Social Market Foundation. In order to meet this demand, the UK would have to double its current STEM subject graduate output. Similarly, research conducted by the Technology and Innovation Foundation in the US projects that the number of STEM skilled graduates has to increase by up to 30% by 2016 in order to meet job market demand. Euro-pean countries fare no better in their need for STEM skills; Germany was down over 100,000 STEM workers in 2011.

While this is a welcome break for university graduates from the otherwise strained and uncertain global job market, it also presents a problem in terms of competitiveness for many Western countries. Science and technology and the related areas of engineering and mathemat-ics are crucial drivers of innovation, produc-tion and manufacturing, and are therefore key elements for continued economic growth. As the economic balance of power is slowly shift-ing in favour of Asian countries, this is more crucial than ever. Not only is China hot on the heels of the US in terms of STEM publication output, set to surpass the US in this respect in the coming years, but it is also producing high rates of STEM graduates, with 41% of all university graduates completing a degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or a related subject. Furthermore, there seems to be a greater drive among international students, specifically Asian students, to venture abroad to study STEM subjects. Both the UK and the US report that the number of foreign students enrolling in these subjects has been sharply rising, while numbers among domes-tic students remained somewhat stagnant. For Asian students, studying STEM subjects not only meets the growing demands of emerging economies in the East, but also provides greater levels of mobility and flexibility in terms of career choices.

It has been a cause for concern among Europe-an countries and the US that domestic students have shown less enthusiasm for the STEM subjects than their Asian counterparts. In the UK, the US and throughout Europe, several initiatives have been established to not only accommodate better immigration structures to meet the demand for STEM skills, but also to raise awareness and interest among domes-tic students in studying a science, technology, engineering or mathematics discipline. The increase in awareness is beginning to pay off, as a growing number of students have expressed interest in enrolling in science subjects. In the UK, the number of students taking mathemat-ics entrance exams was up by 7.4% for this year, while the numbers for chemistry and biology entrance exams were up by 9.2% and 7.2% respectively. Furthermore, the challenging job prospects in many Western countries are a reason for the growing number of students to take up the challenge to qualify for the dynamic STEM sector. In particular, the gender imbalance that has long existed in STEM in-dustries is rapidly being overcome, with many more women encouraged to study STEM subjects. As Chloe Medov, a computer science undergraduate student confirms: “Even though there are more and more women, especially in technology programs, it continues to be a man’s world to date. Luckily, many universi-ties are providing services and associations that encourage women to enter the sector.” Chloe is planning to apply to ETH Zurich’s Robotics, Systems and Control Masters program once she completes her bachelor’s degree and is excited about the prospect. “Robotics is an incredibly exciting field at the moment with tremendous possibilities for Artificial Intelligence on the horizon in the near future.” Robotics is just one area that is becoming increasingly appeal-ing for its future possibilities. Programs address-ing energy needs, environmental technologies, neuroscience or nanotechnology are among the most stimulating fields of research and study at present, with exciting prospects for in-novation and discovery at the horizon. surprising that MIT has ascended to the top of the rankings for the past two years, as the institute is at the forefront of some of the most groundbreaking research, from astronautics to urban studies.

Does this mean that social sciences and arts and humanities subjects are a dying breed? Certain-ly not. While there is a concrete demand for STEM skills, a growing number of top STEM employers also value the qualities humanities graduates possess, among them critical thinking skills, a greater awareness of social implications and, it must be said, often also better social skills. Employers like to have the best of both worlds, and an arts and humanities background combined with an STEM degree makes for the most employable graduate. This is often achieved through collaborative and inter-disci-plinary efforts. A growing number of universi-ties recognize the added value of interdiscipli-nary research and have taken steps to facilitate inter- and trans-disciplinary research and study options. The Munich Center for Technology in Society, situated at the Technische Universität Munich (TU Munich, ranked 53rd), for exam-ple, offers an “interface between the sciences” and comprises social science, philosophy and history as well as the natural sciences, among others, to further knowledge of the effects of technology on society. By bringing the differ-ent disciplines together, greater synergies can be explored, which then, in turn, drives inno-vation. Many of the universities that have done well in the rankings this year have actively fostered such collaborative efforts.

The growing global emphasis on STEM subjects will not abate any time soon. STEM will constitute the largest area of growth and proliferation in the coming decade, as both specialist institutes and comprehensive universi-ties seeks to raise their provision levels in these subjects to attract larger numbers of students. The growing strength of science and technol-ogy oriented universities in the QS World University Rankings signals this development.

QS Stars: a Quick overview

QS has been publishing the annual QS World University Rankings® since 2004. QS Stars is a complement to rankings – a rating system that facilitates the evaluation of universities across a much broader range of criteria and in relation to established thresholds

rather than the performance of other institutions.

The objectives are to allow institutions to shine, irrespective of their size, shape and mission, and to shine a light on excellence that may otherwise remain in the shade. QS Stars are awarded based on a university’s performance in an extensive audit. Over 40

criteria contribute toward the overall assessment, grouped into 11 categories:Research, Employability, Teaching, Facilities, Online/Distance Learning, Internationalization, Innovation, Engagement, Access,

Culture and the institution’s standing in specialist subjects.

QS Stars are awarded both overall and for each of these subcategories on a one-to-five scale, enabling institutions that are strong overall to demonstrate their strength in the round and institutions that do less well overall to highlight their strengths in key areas.

An overall rating of ‘five stars plus’ is reserved for a handful of truly exceptional institutions.

QSIU Benchmarking ServiceThe QS Intelligence Unit Benchmarking Service allows participating universities to measure themselves in greater detail against a handpicked group of institutions worldwide, telling them more about their strengths as well as potential areas for improvement.

It highlights institutional trends by presenting robust data in an accessible and comprehensive format, and has been extensively used by institutions around the world as an important tool for strategic planning and research.

How does it work?Institutions select a number (between 6 and 30) of target institutions from the QS World University Rankings list with which to compare their performance. a mixture of domestic and international institutions is ideal, and a three to five-year cycle is recommended in order to develop a comprehensive perspective.

Utilizing our QS classifications System, we are able to assist clients in choosing their peer list, which is a critical starting point for the benchmarking process.

What is included?• World rank estimation for non-ranked institutions• Trend data on ranking positions, including information not publicly available • access to the data behind the rankings, including academic Reputation, employer Reputation and Research

Performance results• variances in performance and a variety of other metrics

advantages to institutions• allows institutions exclusive access to data used for the QS World University Rankings • Helps institutions understand their position regionally, nationally and globally • Provides context to assist in setting realistic and achievable targets• challenges operational complacency• creates an atmosphere conducive to continuous improvement • Identifies gaps and weak areas to indicate what is required to improve competitiveness

Jason Newman“The QS Benchmarking Service gives universities an unrivalled insight into their performance across a broad range of criteria.

It’s a one-stop shop for institutional performance, going over and above the information presented in the QS World University Rankings. It’s particularly useful for giving universities greater insight into their reputation in different regions and in different subject areas.

Benchmarking reports also provide comparative data covering areas such as student body makeup, exchange students, tuition fees, most cited research papers, patents, annual library spend, research funding and graduate employability.

Universities receive a like-for-like comparison against each of their nominated peers in all of the performance areas.

The benchmarking reports are offered in three and five-year cycles, allowing institutions to map their improvement against their chosen institutions.”

Asian universities are stalling in their attempts to break into the global top 20 in the overall QS World University Rankings, but the domi-nance of the region’s young universities may be a sign of things to come.

The elite cadre of US and UK universities that comprise the top ten of the overall rankings are united by many decades – if not centuries – of tradition and investment. From the medieval colleges of Oxford and Cambridge to the neo-classical campuses of Harvard and Yale, these are historic seats of learning. The top ten have between them been active for a combined total of nearly 3,500 years.

In contrast, the ‘new kids on the block’ that comprise the QS Top 50 Under 50 were all established since 1962. And the rankings reveal that, when the West is stripped of the head start provided by its historic academic achievements, its younger institutions are struggling to keep pace with the rapid development of Asia.

Four of the top five institutions in this year’s QS Top 50 Under 50 are Asian. Hong Kong University of Science and Technol-ogy (HKUST) takes the top spot ahead of Singapore’s Nanyang Technological Univer-

sity (NTU), while Korea’s KAIST and City University of Hong Kong are fourth and fifth respectively. Sandwiched between them in third place is the UK’s University of Warwick.

HKUST was already the leader in QS Univer-sity Rankings: Asia, published earlier in 2013. Established as recently as 1991, it has shown its quality against much older institutions, ranking 34th in the overall QS World University Rank-ings in 2013. With second-placed Nanyang Technological University also established just 22 years ago, this year’s top two universities are younger than many of their students. Their remarkable ascent to world-class status is testa-ment to the sheer dynamism of Asian higher education.

The latest QS Top 50 Under 50 ranking sees one Hong Kong institution replace another at its head. Last year’s leader, the Chinese Univer-sity of Hong Kong, is now too old to qualify, having reached its half-century along with four others from the 2012 top 50. The universi-ties of York, East Anglia and Victoria, and King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals are in the same position.

All 50 institutions in the table make the top 350 in the overall QS World University Rank-ings, despite the advantages enjoyed by historic universities in such comparisons. The Hong Kong Baptist University, ranked 27th in this year’s QS Top 50 Under 50, is the youngest at less than 20 years old.

By far the highest new entrant is the Hong Polytechnic University, in ninth place. It was omitted from last year’s inaugural ranking as an institution that was more than 50 years old, but it has since been accepted that university status arrived only in 1994. The University of Wollongong, in Australia, is in a similar posi-tion, having been omitted last year because it had been a division of the University of New South Wales until becoming a university in its own right in 1975.

The two cases illustrate the difficulty inher-ent in deciding whether universities that have evolved from other institutions should be con-sidered less than 50 years old. The criteria em-ployed in this ranking omit merged universities in which the dominant partner is more than 50 years old, but include those that were colleges before being granted university status.

The other new entrants are Argentina’s Univer-sidad Austral, a private university based in Bue-nos Aires; Brunel University, in London; King Abdul Aziz University, in Jeddah; Universitá degli Studi di Roma – Tor Vergata; Linköping University, in Sweden; and Germany’s Univer-sität Bremen.

* Formed through the merging of institutions, some parts of the institution may pre-date this foundation year. Mergers where the dominant part in the merger pre-dates the last fifty years, particularly where an original name survives the merger, are not considered.

† An institution of higher education, although typically not one with university status, existed at the site where this university now stands - the university can “trace its roots” back further than fifty years but cannot claim to have been a university prior to that period
