Blackford Elementar School

The CAR program encourages children to read on their own every day and to fill in a reading calendar. In support of Pi Phphilanthropic focus on literacy, SJ Pi Phis invested 267 hours on the CAR program which assist 4th graders with reading on a 1 onbasis from January to March. Additionally, SJ Pi Phis raised $780 through donations, the Sponsor a Reader fundraiser and boodrive. Funds earned allowed Blackford Elementary School, a title 1 school, to purchase books through First Book Marketplace. OThursday, March 28, 2013, 74 students from Blackford were awarded with a CAR medals and certificates for the completion of thmonth long program. Blackford became a Registered Recipient Group with First Book in October 2011 with SJ Pi Phi's assistanceFirst Book is a partner with Pi Beta Phi Foundation and a nonprofit organization that gives children from low-income families thchance to read and own their first new book. SJ Club also made contributions to First Book, the Foundation's Literacy Fund, whe100% of designated gifts support Pi Phi's vision of eliminating the barrier of illiteracy through our partnership with First Book.

Book discussions based on genres: poetry, drama, fantasy, historical fiction, nonfiction, biography, mythology, and fables.

74 fourth graders received their Champions are Readersmedals and certificates for completing the reading program.
