Philly Soul ownerstraining players for Chinese leaguePhiladelphia’s indoor foot-ball league team is bring-ing some of thathometown “soul” abroadto China.
Yesterday, PhiladelphiaCouncilman David Oh metwith owners and execu-tives with the PhiladelphiaSoul to discuss the team’splans to help its parentleague, the Arena FootballLeague, to expand intoAsia.
Two of the Soul owners,Conshohocken business-man Martin Judge and RonJaworski, plan to introducea six-team indoor profes-sional football league in2014. The Soul is investing$20 million to send athlet-ic supplies overseas to helpkick off player and coachtraining at Asian universi-ties.
Judge said the Chinesehave too many dull sports. He wants to liven up thesports scene.
“Soccer’s boring,” saidJudge, a native of theNortheast. Judge addedthat the hardest part willbe introducing theAmerican brand of footballto the people.
“They have no ideawhat football is,” he said.“We’ve got to train them.”
David Niu, president ofAFL China, said he is excit-ed for what the venture
could mean for the twocountries moving forward.
“For the Chinese, arenafootball is a very newsports event,” Niu said, adding that he thinks peo-ple in China will like thesport and it could act as acultural bridge. “I thinkthe sport is good for USAand China people to un-derstand each other.”
Judge said the sixChinese teams would besold for $10 million each.China plans to holdAmerican AFL exhibitiongames in Beijing andGuangzhou in October, which would represent thefirst American footballgame played in China.

Pope Benedict XVI saysgoodbye, but not farewellThere was no sadness, re-gret, nor nostalgia even onSt. Peter’s Square yesterday— the day of Pope BenedictXVI’s final general audi-ence. Among the tens ofthousands of faithful therewere smiling faces and afew tears, not from sorrowbut from emotion. Whenhe first emerged in hisPopemobile, Benedict wasgreeted with an explosionof applause before hestopped to hold and kiss ababy.
If the faithful fearedBenedict would disappearforever, words of comfortfrom the outgoing pontiffsaid otherwise.
“I do not return to pri-vate life, to a life of travel, meetings, receptions, con-ferences and so on. I do notabandon the cross, but re-main in a new way near tothe Crucified Lord,” he toldthose gathered at St.Peter’s Square. “I no longerwield the power of the of-
fice for the government ofthe Church, but in theservice of prayer I remain,so to speak, within St.Peter’s bounds.”
His final words, reassur-ing and not formal, wereaimed directly at the heartof so many different peo-ple from all over the world,of all ages, united by thishistorical event.
He did speak of the test-ing times, comparing it toa noted Biblical passage.“[These years] have been astretch of the Church’s pil-grim way, which has seenmoments joy and light, butalso difficult moments. Ihave felt like St. Peter withthe Apostles in the boat onthe Sea of Galilee. ... Therehave been times when theseas were rough and thewind against us, as in thewhole history of theChurch it has ever been.”
The pope for dummiesThe Pope is resigning: anunprecedented event inmodern times. Indeed, be-cause the event is so un-usual, the Catholic Churchis charting new territoryas Benedict XVI leaves of-fice. Metro explains.
What happens today? This is the last day ofBenedict XVI’s pontificate. In the morning, he meetswith cardinals at theVatican. Cardinals, whichare based in countriesaround the world, havetraveled to Rome for thisevent. They convene againin March to elect a newPope. At 4:55 pm, BenedictXVI bids farewell to hisstaff and the Swiss Guardsat the Vatican ApostolicPalace and travels by heli-copter to Castel Gandolfo, the Pope’s vacationresidence. Once there, hewill greet the crowds fromthe balcony.
At 8 p.m., Benedict XVIofficially relinquishes thepapacy. The Swiss Guards, who serve the Pope,
depart and are replaced bysoldiers of the VaticanGendarmerie, who will beresponsible for BenedictXVI’s security until he dies. What will the Pope donext? Is he even a Popeanymore? As this is unchartered terri-tory for the Church, officials have had to comeup with new solutions.Benedict will be known as“Pope Emeritus” and willstill be called “His HolinessBenedict XV.I” He will con-tinue to wear the whitecassock reserved forPopes, but not the cape.Benedict, a renownedscholar, will live in amonastery, where he willspend his time studyingand writing.

The meetingwould be the first betweenthe leaders this year, de-spite weeks of hagglingover whether and howWashington could avoidcuts known as the “se-quester,” which the WhiteHouse has warned willcause damage to U.S. eco-nomic growth.
“The meeting Friday isan opportunity for us tovisit with the presidentabout how we can all keepour commitment to reduceWashington spending,”McConnell said in a state-ment.
“We can either securethose reductions more in-telligently, or we can do itthe president’s way withacross-the-board cuts. Butone thing Americans sim-ply will not accept is anoth-er tax increase to replacespending reductions we al-ready agreed to,” he said.REUTERS
Obama and Boehner will be joined by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell,
Democratic Senate leader Harry Reid and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi.

For example, a 1927 S Quarter could be worth $7,000 in new condi-tion or less than $20 in poor condition. The up to price reflects items of exceptional quality and rarity. Although it is unlikely you will have these items due to their extreme rarity, feel free to bring whatever items you may have and we will evaluate them free of charge.

THEWORDDorothy Robinson’s take on the world of gossip @dorothyatmetro [email protected]
Stone TemplePilot fires ScottWeilandMy 13-year-old self iscrushed: Stone TemplePilots has fired leadsinger ScottWeiland after 20years of being theband’s lead singer.
“Stone TemplePilots haveannounced theyhave officially ter-minated ScottWeiland,” the bang saidin a statement. What’sweird is that just thisweek Weiland gave thisquote to Rolling Stone,“STP has not broken up.I haven’t quit. I haven’tbeen fired.”
What is surprising isthat the bang was evenstill together. But, hon-
estly, don’t be too wor-ried. Everyone knowsthe money is in reuniontours.
Brown isheading to jailBobby Brown has beensentenced to 55 daysin jail after pleadingguilty to driving un-der the influenceand driving with asuspendedlicense, ac-cording toE! News.Thechargesstemmed
from an October arrestwhen he was discoveredbehind the wheel with-out his dashboardBreathalyzer, a court-
mandate conditionfrom a previouscharges. Brown,
who reports for jailMarch 20, will also
be on probationfor 48 monthsand must com-plete an 18-month alcoholprogram.
Attention LiamHemsworth: If you’re goingto cheat on fiancee MileyCyrus, don’t do it at theChateau Marmont. The LosAngeles hotel swarms dailywith paparazzi and gos-sips; it’s akin to taking outa billboard on I-95.
Here’s the dirt:Hemsworth (aka: Mr. MileyTo-Be) was seen getting“hot and heavy” withJanuary Jones at a pre-
Oscar party over the week-end, per Star magazine. “Itlooked like they had somehot chemistry,” an eyewit-ness told the rag. “Theywere all over each other —and they even kissed!”
For her part, Cyrusshowed up at the EltonJohn AIDS Foundation’sviewing party sans date onSunday and “was all overthe place” (this is code for“drunk”).
So what does thismean? I’m not sure. All Iknow is that Hemsworth is23, while Cyrus is 20. This— the illicit kissing, thepartying — sounds like ap-propriate behavior for peo-ple barely out of theirteens. Not signing up for alifelong contract with oneanother. But I’d be scared.Who wants an angry BillyRay Cyrus? Good luck withthat, January and Liam.
Are Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus done
thanks to the floating head of January Jones (inset)?

Marriage is hard work — even ifyou’re a famous hollywood couple
When Ben Affleckaccepted theOscar for BestPicture, he
thanked his wife JenniferGarner and said that mar-riage is hard work, but it isthe best kind of work. He’sright — it takes great ef-fort to find the balance be-tween each person’s needsand desires. Say football isyour thing — it always hasbeen, ever since you werea little kid watching athome with your dad. It’shard for you to under-stand why your new part-ner has no interest in it.You want to go to gamestogether, talk about plays
and plan weekendsaround the tailgate par-ties. If the answer is “no,”what do you do? Ask for acompromise.
One couple I workedwith had a basic problem:She wanted to stick to low-key staples like pizza andhot dogs, while he wantedto wine and dine on fancy, gourmet meals. The dif-ference in their tastes wasa source of constant bick-ering and resentment intheir relationship.
Compromising is keyin any relationship, even if— as Ben Affleck pointedout rather awkwardly —it takes work. In your rela-tionship, you have to finda balance between yourown pleasures and thethings you love while re-specting the things yourpartner is into, as well. Isthere a way to includeyour significant other butnot force-feed them?
This is where a littlebit can really go along way. You re-member when you
were a child and yourmother wanted you to eatbroccoli, right? It lookedawful, but you had to havesome to appease her, soyou took a small bite. Withthat taste, you showed heryou respected her wishesenough to open your minda little bit. The same thingholds true in your relation-ship. Acknowledge to yourpartner that you under-stand and accept that foot-ball or pizza is not his orher cup of tea. When theplayoffs roll around or aspecial event comes up, saythat his or her company isimportant to you. Be clearthat you know it is a sacri-fice, but that a small por-tion — one game, or oneslice of pizza — wouldmean a lot.
Doing this means you
can share your passionsand interests while re-specting your partner’s de-sires at the same time. Thekey is to encourage themto be open and try to ap-preciate what it is that youfind so fascinating. Whoknows, your partner justmight like it. Sharingpleasures and being opento each other simply helpsto turn the wheels formore mutual passion.Doesn’t sound like suchhard work, does it?

When actor JustinChon sits downfor our inter-view, he’s
coughing and looking a lit-tle worse for the wear. “I’mgood,” he insists. “I’m hun-gover, but I’m good.”Promoting a film like “21& Over” — about his col-lege student character’s21st birthday getting outof control, from the writ-ers of “The Hangover” —can come with its ownrisks, apparently. But it’sall part of the job.
Between being carriedaround, dropped outwindows, Tasered andhaving a teddy bear gluedto your crotch, you’retaking the brunt of theabuse in this film.Yeah. My performance isvery much a physicalcomedic performance, andf—, man. I’m taking a lotof abuse. I mean, my headgot hit on doors, I’m get-ting thrown everywhere. The worst was [the scene]in a smart car, and I had to be [squashed onto] thef—ing dashboard. To get inlike that, I had to twist myneck around. And I’mclaustrophobic, so thatwas the worst. You also had to do a very
painful penis gag, something that’s a staplefor the “Hangover” guys.Well, I’m grateful. At leastthey didn’t give me a tinypee-pee. They were like,“rest assured, we madeyou well-endowed.” Ilooked at it and I was like,“Whoa. I don’t know if mydick is that skin tone, butcool.”
How are you at drinkinggames in real life?I’ve played them. But I’dmuch rather just drink, just get to the point. I don’tneed games. I guess it’sjust a way of getting peo-ple who don’t want todrink to drink. Itshouldn’t be a punish-ment. It’s a pleasure, it’spart of being human.
JOHN JOHNSON
Here’s Justin Chon wearing nothing but a bra and a
teddy bear in “21 & Over,” which hits theaters Friday.
Q&A
A lot of the humorrelating to you beingAsian-American in thismovie seems to be atyour expense. Wasthere anything youthought went too far?
No, and that’s what I loveabout Jon [Lucas] andScott [Moore]. When wedid our first rehearsal, they sat me down andasked me if anything wastoo far or if anythingrubbed me the wrongway. But no, I thoughteverything was great. Imean, you’ve got to beable to laugh at yourself. And I think people whotake themselves too seri-ously are just ridiculous. Ididn’t feel like there wasa lot at the expense ofmy race. And I’ve gottensome s— already frompeople who haven’t seenthe movie. And I’m like,“Dude, lighten up, bro. It’s funny.” As an Asian-American I think it’s agreat role, and I foughthard to get it.

While we wait for “MadMen” to get back on air, wecan relive Megan Draper’sgroovy dresses and shorterhemlines with BananaRepublic’s new capsule col-lection based on seasonfive of the AMC hit se-ries. For spring, BR cre-ative director SimonKneen and the show’scostume designer JanieBryant channeled themod styles of the ’60sinto the 50-piece line— which is perfect tim-ing considering somany designers, includ-ing Marc Jacobs andMichael Kors, did thesame on the spring run-ways. At much more rea-sonable prices — thecollection ranges from$45 to $375 — ladies canfind mini shift dresses inbold geometric prints, checked capris and sepa-rates with keyhole de-tails. For guys, there arebold plaids, sport coats(they were just gettingpopular at the time), fedo-ras and skinny ties. Enjoy apeek at some looks fromthe line.
FEB. 27, 5 P.M.At Rochas, Marco Zaninihas taken the season’sknee length skirt andblown it out, literally, into a swingy, mid-centu-ry flared stunner. Theskirts stand out becausethey’re so full and heavylooking, like the sort ofthing you find in vintageshops but rarely see any-where else. I can’t helpbut wonder though ifsuch a luxuriously heavylooking skirt would feel, well, heavy? He’s alsonailed the satin trend, manipulating everyone’sgo-to wedding dress ma-terial into a beautifullyconstructed closinggown that epitomisesquiet elegance. Even thecasual day wear, such asa pair of gray silkpajamas, look polished,

You might still befocusing on mak-ing it through thewinter, but the
time to start thinkingabout enrolling your childin summer camp is al-ready in full swing. Withso many options outthere, it can be tough tomake these decisions.Alan Saltz, director ofsummer camp programsat the 92nd Street Y inNew York City, is here tohelp.
How can a parent
determine if a child is readyfor sleepaway camp? If they’ve had sleepovers atfriend’s houses, or havebeen away from home fora short period of time, theycan gauge how they’vedone in those situations. There are a lot of two-weekoptions out there now, which is good for a lot ofkids. Most kids seem tostart at 8 or 9.How do you recommendthat a parent begin toresearch camps? It’s a long process. Thereare camp fairs that are of-
fered on a regular basis. This gives a parent the op-portunity to see a numberof camps in one afternoonand meet with the direc-tors. I recommend theytalk not just about the ac-tivities and facilities, buttalk about the staff, campphilosophy. Every camphas its own little narrativeabout who they are andwhat they stand for; it’simportant. Do you have advice for howparents can prepare kids fortheir first camp experience? Once they’ve made that
decision, parents shouldhave a running narrativewith their kids about howmuch fun they’re going tohave, and what a great ex-perience it’s going to be.They should also addressany concerns the kidshave. They should also stayaway from saying thingslike “I’m going to miss youso much” or talking aboutthe things the child willmiss going on at homewhile they’re away.
Alan Saltz, the director of New York City’s 92nd Street Y’s Camp program, shares his 30-plusyears of camp experience to let parents know what they should be asking
Natalie [email protected]
“Every camp hasits own littlenarrative aboutwho they areand what theystand for. It isimportant tofigure that out.” ALAN SALTZ
What are the bestthings about the campexperience for kids? Why should parents be interested? It gives kids an oppor-tunity to develop skillsand interests and abili-ties in areas that aren’tfocused on in schools. It’s a less threateningenvironment. Theycan make friends andtake risks a safe envi-ronment.

QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFOREYOUR KID GOES TO CAMPThere are an estimated 12,000 summer camps in the United States. Make sure you pick the right one.
Quoted
Angela Liddle, executivedirector of the Pennsylva-nia Family Support Al-liance, a nonprofitagency that provides ad-vice on good parentingpractices and who are ad-vocates for the protectionof Pennsylvania’s chil-dren, shares her profes-sional advice for makingsure your child has a fun— and safe — summercamp experience.
Summer camps
1 Looks can be deceiv-ing, so ask forreferences.
2 Ask if it’s accredited bythe American CampAssociation.
3 What are the campdirector’s credentials?
4 What’s the camp’s phi-losophy? (Forexample: Some campspromote competitionand rivalry amongteams. How does thecamp philosophy fitwith your child’s per-sonality?)
5 How are behavioraland disciplinary prob-lems handled?
6 Are staff memberssafety-trained and ca-pable of handlingemergencies?
7 Are staff members in-formed about childabuse prevention?Have they undergonebackground checks?
8 What’s the counselor-to-camper ratio? Theyounger the campers, the higher the ratio ofstaff to campersshould be. Counselors
should be at least twoyears older than thekids they supervise.
Daycare or day camp programs
1 Ask about credentialsand philosophy, thesame as you wouldwhen evaluating anaway camp.
2 Inspect the daycare fa-cility for cleanliness.
3 Are there fireextinguishers, smokealarms and first aidkits? Does the staffknow CPR?
4 Are toxic substanceslike cleaning suppliesand pest killers safelywell away fromchildren?
5 Are play areas properlyheated or cooled, spa-cious enough, well lit?If there’s an outdoor
play area, is it safe?
6 Are toys andequipment clean? Arethey age-appropriate?
7 If provided, are snacksand meals healthy?
8 Is the staff trained todeal with issuesunique to young chil-dren?
9 Are caregivers trainedto dispensemedications?
10Is there a securitypolicy about who
can pick up your child?METRO

The sequester is a bi-partisan debacle thatexposes the self-servinginefficiency of all ourelected officials.
Our national budgetis 3.6 trillion dollars. The sequester cuts 85billion off of that 3,600billion dollars. Why, asPresident Obamaclaims, should that cut“close funding for thedisabled kid or the poorkid?”

Michael Stutes is lookingrusty out of the chute.
To be successful,Stutes must have control, something that has elud-ed him so far in springtraining.
Stutes made his firstappearance in a game innearly 11 months lastweekend. Stutes had com-mand issues, but he’s con-fident that he’ll regain2011 form before a rightshoulder injury sidelinedhim last season.
Stutes was a revelationtwo years ago since hemade a habit of gettingahead of hitters beforeexpanding the zone withtwo strikes on the hitter.
“That’s exactly what Ihave to do in order to besuccessful,” Stutes said. “Ido all that I can from get-ting behind in the count.I’m still working towardwhere I need to be. I’mconfident that I’ll getthere.”
There are three spotsopen in the bullpen.Stutes is competing withJake Diekman, JustinDeFratus, Jeremy Horstand Phillippe Aumont.
“I don’t think aboutthe competition as much
as I think about just beingable to do what I’m capa-ble of. I know I can do the
job. I just have to go outthere like I did in 2011and throw strikes.”
And his shoulder feelsfine.
“I can’t complainabout that,” Stutes said.“It’s in very good shape. Ihave no physical excuses.I just have to go out thereand execute my pitches. Iwant to be part of thebullpen. I believe thisclub has the chance to dosomething special thisseason and I want to bepart of that.”

In an annual rite ofpassage, good players onbad teams will pack it in.Older players on playoffteams will downshift.Unfortunately, this oftencoincides with playoffs.Make adjustments:
Full NelsonThe Magic have blown uptheir roster and are carry-ing two quality backuppoint guards in E’TwaunMoore and Beno Udrih.Jameer Nelson’s oft-trou-blesome knee is acting upand he won’t have muchmotivation to fight it.Orlando is playing forping-pong balls.
Dunkin’ downGregg Popovich is a master
at getting his players topeak at the right time. Thatoften means resting TimDuncan down the stretch.Over the last three seasons,Duncan has never playedmore than 28 minutes anight in April.
In a flash
By now, it’s very obviousthat Eric Gordon’s knee is-sues are chronic. TheHornets didn’t get thememo when theymatched a four-year, $58million offer sheet lastsummer, but fantasy own-ers should have. Gordoncan’t be trusted to play atall down the stretch.

Sometimes, all it takes tochange the attitude of afranchise is new uni-forms. The jersey changemade by coach GordonBombay in “The MightyDucks” turned his teamfrom bottom feeders intoDistrict 5 champions.
Union manager JohnHackworth is hoping forsimilar success for hisclub as they embark on anew season Saturday. OnTuesday, the Union heldan unveiling of their newkit at Xfinity Live!
The new shirts featurea ‘B’ in the bottom leftquadrant on the front ofthe jersey. The ‘B’ symbol-izes the Bethlehem Steel,a soccer club which exist-ed in the Philadelphiaarea from 1911-1930. TheSteel were five-time win-ners of the U.S. Open Cup(1915, 1916, 1918, 1919,1926) and were one of the
most popular teams inOpen Cup history.
Hackworth is excitedto start the season andfeels like the necessarysteps have been taken toturn things around.
"Everybody feels like
the work has been doneand the preparedness isthere,” said Hackworth.“We’re excited to startthe new season and we’regoing to be playing foryou [the fans] onSaturday.”
The Sons of Benpacked the event andwere decked out head totoe in Union jerseys, hatsand sweatshirts. One ofthe founding members ofthe group, Grant Scavello, chimed in about the up-coming season.
“I think we’re definitelyset up for more successthan last season,” saidScavello. “With the addi-tion of Conor Casey, aswell as Jeff Park, it’s defi-nitely adding a lot ofdepth to the roster.[General manager] NickSakiewicz has reallypushed this team to getback to where they weretwo years ago, not onlyregarding the new acqui-sitions but bringing guysback like Sebastien LeToux as well.”
