Sunday of the Publican and the Pharisee

"Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. The Phariseestood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in a week, I give tithes of all that I possess. Andthe publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as hiseyes unto heaven, but smote upon hisbreast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. I tell you, this man went down to his house justifiedrather than the other: for everyone that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himselfshall be exalted" (Lk. 18:9-14).

It is quite likely that the Pharisee depicted in this parable was not a bad man; he did no harm to anyone. The parable does not say, however, that he has done any real good works; rather, he strictly follows thevarious, minute, secondary religious rites, even those of them which were not required by the OldTestament laws. Following these rites, he had no mean opinion of himself. He fits this expression of St.John Chrysostom, "He judged the whole world but justified himself!" People of this disposition areunable to evaluate themselves critically, repent and start a good life. Their moral self is dead. More thanonce, the Lord Jesus Christ publicly castigated the hypocrisy of Judaic scribes and Pharisees, but in thisparable Christ only remarks that it was the tax collector who went down to his house justified rather

than the other; in other words, it was the tax collector's sincere repentance that was accepted by God.

2 Timothy 3:10-15(Epistle)10 But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love,

perseverance,11 persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra whatpersecutions I endured. And out of them all the Lord delivered me.

12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.13 But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from

whom you have learned them,15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for

salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Luke 18:10-14(Gospel)10 Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank You that I am not like other men

extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector.12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.13 And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his

breast, saying, God, be merciful to me a sinner!14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts

himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.

    REFLECTION FROM FR.VLAD

Preparing for Lent: Zacchaeus, Publican and Pharisee

Today is the second Sunday that prepares us for the arrival of the great season in the Orthodox Church-The Great Lent. Last Sunday we heard the story of Zacchaeus, and his example of responding to OurLords benevolence towards him. While being a tax collector he was despised by the people, becausesome of his possessions came through cheating and maybe even extortion. But in his conversion heleaves nothing to himself. To those he defrauded he gives back the fourfold, but he also gives half of hispossessions to the poor. In the book of Exodus (chapter 22 verse 1) the proper restitution for stolengoods this is four or five fold restitution. By restoring fourfold to those he defrauded Zacchaeus easilyfulfills the law. There is no doubt Jesus knew exactly what Zacchaeus did, namely he went beyond therequirement. We must too not just limit ourselves to what is required, but go beyond the requirement. Sowe might too hear from Our Lord salvation has come into this house

In todays gospel we are presented with the pride of Pharisee and the humility of Publican. Phariseebeing prideful receives no justification. The tears of the Publican earn him Gods mercy. The kotakionfor todays celebration sums it up for us:

Let us flee from the pride of the Pharisee!

Let us learn humility from the Publican's tears!

Let us cry to our Savior:

Have mercy on us, O only merciful One!
