Colossians 3:4-11 (Epistle)4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire,

and covetousness, which is idolatry.6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience,7 in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your

PARISH MINISTRIES

Saturday Soup Kitchen

The Parish continues to provide a hot lunch on Saturday mornings for the community. A special thanks to ourvolunteers who helped prepare and serve food, design and draft flyers for the Soup Kitchen, clean up and serveas hosts to our guests this week. Volunteers are always welcome: Friday evenings to prepare the meal or onSaturdays to serve the meal.

Clothing, Linens and Clothing Drive

We still are collecting blankets and towels forfamilies in need. Childrens clothing especially little girls for winter coats, warm clothing, mittens, boots, etc. Adult warm clothing sweaters, sweatshirts, flannels, etc.are appreciated. Please contact the Church Office or bring the items to the Church.

Prayers for sick, home bund and those who requested to pray for them:

120th Anniversary Sst. Peter & Paul Orthodox Church

Our parish is quickly approaching the 120 th Anniversary - 120 years of hard work and heroic accomplishmentsby our predecessors and founders. In order to celebrate this very special event, we would like to start planningnow and organize a committee to plan the events of our celebration.

OUR HISTORY

It all began on April 1, 1894 when an organization of eight men was established, named SS. Peter and PaulGreek Catholic Russian Orthodox Church Association, with the goal of establishing an Orthodox parish inBuffalo, New York. This was the first Orthodox Church in the Niagara Frontier in the New York/New Jersey. Afund $59.00 in cash and $253.00 in pledges was established for the purpose of constructing a church.

In May of 1894 a site for the proposed church was purchased at 45 Ideal Streetextending to Benzinger Street and consisting of four city lots. The cost of theproperty was $2,160.00.

From June of 1894 through December of 1895 the parish was able to purchase the

lumber for $300.00 and to build a small wooden church, furnishing it with thenecessary sacred items. The construction was done by the men from the parishwho also built a parish hall.

In 1903 SS. Peter and Paul received a bell cast from bronze which was made atthe Chaplain Fulton Manufacturing Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Thebell was consecrated on April 23, 1903, by His Grace, The Most ReverendArchbishop Tikhon who came to America from St. Petersburg. Later he became aPatriarch of Moscow, who was glorified as a saint in 1980 s in the OrthodoxChurch.

The first full-time rector, Father Alexander Venjaminoff, was assigned to theparish in 1905. The decades that followed were marked by continuing growth in membership.

On July 1, 1928 Father Erast Wolkodoff was assigned to SS. Peter and Paul. About one year after his arrivalplans were made for the construction of a brick church.

During the Autumn of 1932, with 225 families registered, contracts were signed withthe architect and contractors. Joseph E. Fronczak, the noted architect, designed thechurch in the Russian-Byzantine style with the capacity of 400 at an estimated cost of$45,000.00. The cost of $45,000.00 included 4 and 1/2 tons of copper to lay gutters,Spanish tile roofing and three towers (turrets) and a 30-foot copper tower for thecentral dome extending the height of the church to 100 feet.

The cornerstone was laid for the new church. Men of the parish who were unemployedbecause of the Depression were hired by the construction company as laborers. ByOctober of 1933 the church was completed. The consecration of the new edifice tookplace on October 8, 1933 with thousands in attendance. Many of people in attendancetraveled great distances to participate in this milestone and represented many differentethnic Orthodox Christians. The Lords Prayer was especially arranged for the choirby Nicholas Kedroff, director of the famous Kedroff Quartet.

One of the factors that contributed to the parish growth was FatherErast Wolkodoffs effort in sponsoring refugees to the United States.Refugees contributed greatly to the cultural, financial, educational andspiritual life of the Buffalo Parish. Most of these refugees came fromRussia, Belarus and Ukraine.

Since the passing of Father Wolkodoff, several clergy were assigned tothe parish, but the longest stay was 8 years (by Father Steven Janos).

Every priest who served at Saints Peter and Paul did their very best toserve the people and every one contributed to what our parish is today.

In August of 2011, His Grace, The Right Reverend MICHAEL, bishopof New York and the Diocese of New York and New Jersey initiated the Operation Buffalo, a project aimedat renovating the parish rectory for a new full-time priest. The project galvanized the enthusiasm of theparishioners who are now looking towards the great future of Saints Peter and Paul parish.
