Welcome to the 2013 Jackson Hewitt® Tax Preparer Recruiting ToolkitHiring the right tax preparers is vital to the success of your business and is the number one factor for increasing customer retention. NHQ has dug into our research to find the types of people who make good candidates for our tax preparer training and this year’s marketing focus reflects on the results of that data.

This year, our Tax School marketing has been drastically retooled to focus on the end result: hiring (and retaining) the best qualified tax preparers that you can.

An Integrated Marketing Strategy to Help You Develop and Recruit the Very Best Tax Preparers The best way to get your message out, is through all of the various mediums within this toolkit—from posters to flyers, call scripts to email blasts, take advantage of everything that is available to create a customized marketing plan that works for you.

This year’s kit has been revamped to create a cohesive year-round look for your offices and, as always, we strongly recommend that you replace outdated messaging with new messaging whenever possible.

State Regulatory RequirementsIn most states, Tax School is regulated by career or proprietary school laws and regulations. If your Tax School is located in a state where these laws and regulations are in effect, your Tax School may need to be licensed or registered to offer tax courses and may also be subject to other requirements relating to facilities, instructor qualifications, tuition-guaranty funds, bonding and advertising. Before enrolling Tax School students, offering a Tax School course or advertising any tax course, please review the laws in your state to ensure that you are aware of these requirements and are operating in compliance with them. How to Implement Your Own Tax Preparer Recruiting Campaign The goal of any successful Tax Preparer Recruiting campaign is three-fold:

1. Retain existing quality preparers

2. Enroll candidates into Tax School who want to learn tax preparation

3. Hire the best Tax School students as Tax Pros

This Toolkit offers an assortment of ideas to help you attract and retain quality tax preparers. Here, we’ve outlined a few ways you can use the kit to maximize the effectiveness of your 2013 Tax School.

• ChangeyourExteriorPosters Remove all of your in-season posters and put

up posters that alert people that you’re hiring! Since the new posters have moved away from our trademark in-season red designs, they will certainly catch people’s attention.

• Updateyourvoicemailand/or on-hold messages

Remind callers about Tax School/open positions anytime they call your office. Utilize the scripts on JHnet that will help encourage callers to learn more.

• Attendlocaljobfairs Does your town host a job fair? Make sure

you attend. It’s a great way to connect with people who are looking for a new job opportunity. Arm yourself with informational flyers, brochures and discount coupons to obtain leads. consider rolling out a rewards program for existing employees that “Refer a Preparer” and

• Createa“Refer-a-Preparer”Program Consider rolling out a rewards program for

your existing employees so that they will help you find the best qualified tax preparers for the season. You set the parameters that work best with your business plan and “reward” your employees for every person they refer that you end up hiring.

• Markettoyourtargetaudience Identify people who may be interested in

becoming a tax preparer. For example, try reaching out to active retirees with a postcard mailing sent to a local senior housing complex. Or, leave a stack of flyers geared towards stay-at-home moms at an area nursery, elementary or dance school.

• Workwithyourretailstoremanager If you work exclusively in Walmart or Sears store locations, work closely with your local retail store manager and ask about the possibility of displaying Jackson Hewitt employment posters or distributing flyers in the months leading up to tax season.

These are just a few ideas, but there really is no limit to what you can do to promote your tax school. We’ve provided you with the tools—now customize it to make it work for you. As always, we are here to help in any way you need. Just contact the Marketing Department for more ideas.

Monitoring Your Marketing Efforts You should monitor your Tax School marketing plan to ensure you are getting the results you expected. Routinely monitor your efforts and revise as necessary. If certain tactics are providing the results you expect, continue or increase their usage. If, however, some of your marketing tactics are not yielding the results you want, you should consider revising your plan. Use the Employee Education Marketing Report to view the results of the marketing efforts you’ve entered into Local Promotion Management eService (Note: Ensure that your Recruiter is using Employee Education eService to indicate the marketing tactics that are driving leads into your offices, otherwise this report will not be of use).


Exterior Signage: Overview

WindowPosters/A-FrameSignsWindow posters are often your first contact with job seekers and are vital in advertising your tax education and career offerings. That’s why it is particularly important that you update your exterior posters this year to generate interest and obtain quality tax preparers and instructors. Exterior posters and A-frame signs may be displayed from July to December (or as long as you are hiring).

Utilize any Tax Preparer Recruiting window poster as an A-Frame sign. Attract pedestirans by placing in high traffic areas such as sidewalks in front of your office. You may even use A-frame signs indoors.

State Regulatory RequirementsMost states that regulate the operation of Tax School also impose restrictions on how they are marketed and advertised. Moreover, even if local laws and regulations do not specifically regulate Tax School marketing and advertising, as with all marketing, the representations in the materials promoting your Tax School must be truthful and accurate. In addition, you must avoid making any statement that could be interpreted as either direct or implied offer or guarantees of employment as a result of enrolling in or completing a Tax School Course. Please submit a copy of any locally created Tax School marketing materials to the Marketing department for review and approval before you place the ad. Complete the Advertising Approval Form and submit your proposed advertisement via email to [email protected].

• Greet all clients in a friendly and professional manner; make customers feel welcome and comfortable. • Conduct a thorough in-person tax interview with potential clients, using the Company’s proprietary tax

software application. • Provide details to clients on products and services available to them at the time of the interview. • Complete all related tax forms in accordance with policies and in compliance with legislation and

regulations. • Contact clients for additional information, as necessary, to ensure accurate completion of tax returns. • Audit all tax return forms for accuracy and completeness (i.e. names, identifying numbers, and client

signatures). • Research tax-related questions and issues and respond to clients in a timely manner.

Monitor on-site client volume and advise supervisor when additional tax preparers are required. • Maintain a positive attitude and meet all customer-service standards and productivity levels as set by the

Office Supervisor. • Maintain office image; keep work area neat and clean. • Resolve client complaints and/or work with Supervisor (as needed) to resolve any issues or concerns. • Perform other duties as required. • Obtain and maintain a PTIN and any other professional licensing requirements from the IRS and the state.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: Education: Must have a High School Diploma/GED Equivalent, College Course of study in tax preparation and/or accounting a plus. Experience/Requirements:

Previous experience in tax preparation and filing a plus.

• Candidates without tax experience are welcome to apply, but will be required to enroll in our Tax Course. • Experience candidates can “test out” of our Tax Course with a passing score on the Tax School Aptitude

Test (TSAT). • Must pas the Tax Preparer Readiness Test (TPRT) and all other Jackson Hewitt required courses/modules

prior to preparing taxes. • Good communication and commitment to superior interpersonal and customer service skills • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced business environment • Ability to work flexible hours • Must pass an active PTIN from the IRS
