Jason Daves

New directorof chamberhas plansfor the fuureBy CHRISNORWOODHome staff writer

The successful tenure of Greater Talladega and Lincoln Area Chamber of Commerce executive direc-tor Mack Ferguson came to an end earlier this year, but his successor, Jason Daves, is planning to hit the ground running.

According to a presen-tation he plans to pres-ent the chamber’s Board of Directors, he has a multi-point plan going ahead.

First will be continued growth in membership, which starts with increas-ing the value of chamber membership by assessing the needs of business own-ers.

This will also involve more corporate sponsor-ships, through vehicles such as chamber maga-zines and the state tourism website. He also has plans to enhance the chamber’s own web presence.

Daves also plans on enhancing the chamber’s presence in Lincoln, including office hours in the new Lincoln City Hall on Tuesdays.

He also stresses the importance of member-

ship in the Alabama State Chamber of Commerce, which “keeps our chamber up to date on all current state politics that affect businesses.”

He is also planning on increasing member recognition through par-ticipation in the monthly Talladega and Lincoln Business Associates meet-ings and through the continuing Leadership Program.

Daves also has edu-cational partnerships planned with Talladega city and county schools, the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind and Talladega College.

Under the economic heading, Daves lists plans to “nurture and support existing local businesses (while) build(ing) a solid base for the Industrial Development Board to help recruit new businesses and industries.”

He also has plans to continue development projects around the square, as well as the development of the TOP Trails park and the Creek Indian Museum. Ferguson remains involved in both of the latter two projects in retirement. He will also be continuing

Ferguson’s efforts to bring a meeting of the Creek Nation to Talladega.

Other goals include working closely with city officials in Lincoln and Talladega, while continu-ing to support commu-nity projects such as the Farmer’s Market, April in Talladega and the Harvest Group, a program for at-risk teens and senior citi-zens.

Other community pro-grams include the Activities Committee Talladega, the Hall of Heroes Committee, Mardi Gras, the antique car show, Talladega and Lincoln Christmas parades, the Talladega College Founders Day Parade, the Talladega County Volunteers Program (suc-cessor organization to the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program) and the Boy Scouts.

The chamber can be contacted at 256-362-9075 or on the web at www.talla-degachamber.com. Mailing address is P.O. Drawer A, Talladega, Al. 35161.

The chamber offices are located at 210 East St. S., in the old railroad depot.

State Rep. Steve Hurst, left, and Talladega City Councilman Joe Ballow enjoy working in their pawn shop, Haynes Street Pawn.

Work is like a hobbyfor pawn shop ownersBy KENNY FARMERSpecial Projects editor

For the owners of Haynes Street Pawn Shop in Talladega, work is more like a hobby. State Rep. Steve Hurst and Talladega City Councilman Joe Ballow enjoy their days working in their pawn shop, meeting others and having opportunities to help those in need.

Hurst said the people and the education he receives from researching all the items brought into the shop are the things he enjoys most about the business.

“I like the educational part,” he said. “You never know what people are going to bring in. I might do research for two or three days trying to find information on an item.”

Ballow looks around the store as he points out items such as an old barbershop chair and an antique, fully operational Coca-Cola vending machine.

“I collect that type of stuff, so I enjoy looking at it all day.”

Hurst mentioned some of the recent items brought into the store, including a fully functioning cash reg-ister that was discovered to be made in 1913 and a Singer sewing machine with carrying box that was used by the company’s door-to-door salesmen.

“The most interesting thing to me is the unusu-al things people bring in here,” he said.

Hurst also talked about other interesting items at the shop, such as an old, original oil painting titled “The Ghost Rider” and an autographed Babe Ruth homerun ball.

Hurst said the ball, which he owned prior to opening the shop, led him to researching old items “a lot deeper.”

In addition to the edu-cation he gets, Hurst said the store allows him and Ballow to help others.

“You can help people,” he said. “You have a lot of people who struggle, and we try to help people all we can. We treat them with respect and try to help them.”

Ballow said that in the past he has been in the same position as many of his customers.

“We treat people with the utmost respect because when they come in here, they are looking to borrow money,” he said. “I’ve been there and done that and I didn’t want to be treated badly.”

Several years ago, Hurst and Ballow were having dinner with their wives when they began to talk about the idea of open-ing their own pawn shop. Hurst said he had always wanted a pawn shop. Ballow thought it sounded like a good idea.

“He (Hurst) had the building, and I had the time to work it,” said Ballow. “One thing led to another.”

Haynes Street Pawn opened in February 2011, and Hurst said he has been pleased with the business so far.

“All in all, it’s been great,” he said. “It’s been a lot of fun.”

However, Ballow and Hurst did their home-work before opening their doors.

“It wasn’t on a whim, we thought about it,” Ballow said.

The two talked to friends who owned pawn shops in Birmingham and Oxford to see what the business was all about, and to see if it was something they really wanted to do. They agreed the venture was something they would like to try.

“We just jumped in with both feet, and two years later, we’re rocking it, we’re doing real good,” Ballow said.

Hurst talked about the many attractions in the pawn shop for kids to enjoy, like the remote con-trol deer that hangs from the wall that moves, talks and sings; the coin-oper-ated horse; and the work-ing popcorn machine.

“We like to have some-thing for the kids to see,” he said.

At Haynes Street Pawn, the fun and games are not limited to just youngsters.

“We used to have a green box labeled ‘souve-

nirs,’ with a (fake) coiled up snake inside,” Hurst said. “I would say as cus-tomers entered the store, ‘Don’t you look in that box. You see that box? Don’t you dare, don’t you dare look in that box’.”

Hurst said people would go straight to the box, even after hearing his warning. He said people would scream, jump and even run out of the store after seeing the snake.

“We try to have a good time,” he said.

Guns are also a big part of the business at Haynes Street Pawn.

“We sell a lot of guns,” Ballow said.

When the pawnshop opened in February 2011, Hurst and Ballow had 15 guns for sale. Now that number is up to “400 or 500,” according to Ballow.

He said gun sales picked up after the movie theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., in July, and increased after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shoot-ing in December.

“It’s getting hard for me to replace what I’m sell-ing,” he said.

While Haynes Street Pawn has its share of color-ful characters and unique items, Ballow said it is nothing like the reality TV shows about pawn shops.

“If it was like that, I’d go home,” Ballow said. “I don’t need that in my life. I’m 68 years old.”

As for the future of the business, Ballow hopes it continues to grow. He said the pawn shop, along with his grandson Tyler, “keeps him young.” He said most of the money that is made at the shop is put back into the business.

Looking ahead, Hurst said he would also like to see the business “continue to grow.” While more space has already been added to the building, Hurst said the shop needs more room. He said plans to construct an outside, fenced-in area are being considered.

Haynes Pawn Shop in Talladega is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m., and on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.

Owning a marina a dreamcome true for Mike MorrisBy KENNY FARMERSpecial Projects editor

Mike Morris has owned the Poor House Branch Marina for 15 years and there’s no place he’d rather be.

“I live on the lake and own a marina,” he said. “That’s always been my dream.”

Before buying the mari-na, Morris worked for his father at his truck stop in Birmingham. When his dad sold the busi-ness, Morris was looking for something else to do. That’s when his next door neighbor, Richard Merrell, who owned the Poor House Branch Marina at the time, told Morris he was ready to get out of the business and was looking to sell his marina.

“It was just luck,” Morris said.

Since purchasing the marina, there is no place Morris would rather spend his days, not even at home.

“I’ve never taken off a day, except when I was sick,” he said. “That’s the only time I’ve been away (from the marina). I’d rath-er be here than at home.”

The water outside his marina is referred to as the “Poor House Branch.”

Morris explained how the waterway got its name.

“This water’s called Poor

House Branch,” he said. “It starts out where the old poor house used to be in Talladega.”

Morris used to put on 156 fishing tournaments per year, but now he is down to just one — the Day After Thanksgiving Bass Tournament. He said because of the cost to insure each one of the 150-plus tournaments, they were no longer profitable to his business.

“We’re not a fishing place anymore,” he said. “We’re a boat dealer. We sell boats and work on

boats. We’ve got a full ser-vice shop. We sell pontoon boats and Honda motors.”

Poor House Branch Marina is an authorized Avalon pontoon dealer. Morris is currently in the process of adding another dealer.

“I like boats,” he said. “I like test driving them.”

Morris said business has been “pretty good,” and 2012 was his biggest year to date.

Morris has made many changes to the Poor House

Dr. Ben Contratto was looking to work in a “small town atmosphere.” Dr. Tony McKinney was ready to call it a career. Both dentists got their wish when Contratto bought McKinney’s business last July.

After four decades of practicing dentistry in Talladega, McKinney retired in July 2012. His office closed, and he was looking to sell his busi-ness.

“He had practiced out here 41 years, and decided

it was time to hang it up and take it to the lake,” Contratto said.

Contratto bought the business and began mak-ing the transition from McKinney’s business to his own.

After meeting with McKinney’s staff, Contratto thought that Talladega “seemed to be a good fit.”

“The people here at the office are great,” he said. “We just kind of hit it off.”

Contratto, known by his patients as ‘Dr. Ben,’ has three employees who work in his office. Sam

Lackey, office manager, has been at the location for 31 years; primary hygienist Kim Otwell has worked there for 25 years; and assistant Haley Wideman has been employed since August 2012.

“It’s definitely more their place than mine,” Contratto said. “They’ve been a huge help.”

About the transi-tion from McKinney to Contratto, Lackey said she “didn’t know what to expect,” but everything has been “good.”

“Ben has made it easy, though,” she said. “He’s really, really nice.”

Dr. Ben Contratto took over the dental practice of Dr. Tony McKinney. He is shown with members of his staff. From the left are Kim Otwell, Contratto, Samantha Lackey and Haley Wideman.

Before arriving in Talladega, Contratto worked for other dentists in Trussville and Coosa County. He graduated from the University of

Alabama at Birmingham in 2010 and wanted to work alongside other den-tists before starting his own practice.

“It seems to be work-

ing out well,” he said. “Nothing too fancy, just trying to provide good ser-vice.”

Marina property since pur-chasing it 15 years ago.

“The property used to have a camper and mobile home park,” he said. “When I bought it (the marina), I bought the whole thing.”

Morris later shut down the park and began adding storage facilities for boats. He can now store 77 boats and plans to add more storage in the near future that will allow him to store more than 100 boats.

A customer can store their boat in one of Morris’ garages for $100 per month. Sales manager Eddie Rush refers to it as “valet storage.”

“All they’ve got to do is

call and say they’re on their way, and when they get here the boat’s full of gas and in the water,” Rush said. “They can call and say that they want drinks in the cooler, and they’ll be ready when they get here. All they do when they come back is just tie it (their boat) up and leave it. They don’t have to get it in or get it out. They don’t have to be here when it’s put in.”

Poor House Branch Marina also rents pontoon boats at a rate of $250 per day, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

“Some people feel like it’s easier and less expen-sive to rent one than it is to have one of their own — the upkeep, the insur-ance.”

Morris keeps three to five pontoons on hand for rentals every day.

In addition to pontoon sales and rentals, the mari-na also offers a full service shop.

Morris has six employ-ees at the marina: three mechanics, one sales man-ager, one parts manager and a store attendant.

Rush said people should choose Poor House Branch Marina when buy-ing a boat because “it’s the best built boat in the price range.”

Morris added, “It’s the best built boat, period.”

He said he usually keeps about 20 boats for sale at the marina.

“When people come

and buy a boat, it’s the happiest day of their lives,” Morris said.

Rush said he loves working at the marina. He lives across the street, so can walk to work.

“Mike’s pretty good to work for,” Rush said. “He pretty much lets me do my own thing.”

Rush is responsible for selling the boats, as well as handling the financing

“I had my own store, Logan Martin Water Sports, from 2000 to 2004,” Rush said. “Then I worked for several other marinas. “I’ve worked on Lake Martin, I’ve worked on Smith Lake and I’ve worked up in Athens on Wheeler Lake.”

“I just like Logan

Jam sessions in futureplans for My Music StoreBy DENISE SINCLAIRHome News Editor

Cabot Barden has been a musician since he was 14. He bought his first instrument, a set of drums, with money he earned running a paper route for The Daily Home in the Fairmont community in Sylacauga.

Since then, Barden went on to be a musician, sing-er, songwriter, author and now a music store owner in Talladega.

Barden and his wife, Libby, opened the store on Black Friday in 2012.

The store is called My Music Store. It is located at 413 Fort Lashley Ave.

The store sells guitars, drums, keyboards, man-dolins, banjos, accessories, marching band instru-ments and accessories you

can order, guitar strings, and much more.

“When we find out what people want, we will start keeping it in stock,” Libby Barden said.

On how the business is doing, Barden said December was good, January slow, but February has been great so far.

In bigger music stores, Barden said custom-ers don’t get the person-al touch they get at My Music Store.

“The Internet has hurt, I think, all small business-es. But we believe there are enough musicians in this area that will sup-port us. We’ve got a great response from them so far. Local musicians don’t have to drive to Birmingham or Anniston to get what they need. They can come here,” Libby Barden said.

“We’re here to help serve customers and pro-vide them with good per-sonal service that is guar-anteed.”

When not playing music or writing songs, Barden is an author. He has two books out, “It’s the Bass Player” and “Mixed Blessings.” “Mixed Blessings’ won the Pinnacle Book Achievement Award.

He and his wife travel for different book signings. Barden has been invited to the University of North Alabama to lecture on writing books and how to get books published.

Barden has also writ-ten music for movies and played with bands most of his life. The band he was in in Sequoyah was the first band to play on stage when City Stages started in Birmingham.

His bands have opened for artists including Mickey Gilley, Emmylou Harris, the Georgia Satellites, Jan and Dean and others. He has worked in recording studios in Birmingham and Nashville, along with other cities.

He and his co-writers have had several songs on the radio at different times over the years.

He is a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association International and the Weogufka Songwriters.

One of Barden’s friends, Clive Cussler, wrote the book “Sahara (Dirk Pitt adventures)”, that was turned into a movie. In fact, Barden wrote a musi-cal score for the movie, but it didn’t make it to the

Contratto said he pre-fers the “small town atmo-sphere” of Talladega.

“I like the people better in a small town,” he said. “There’s just a different kind of mindset.

“I find in a small town that if you take care of peo-ple, they’ll take care of you. It’s real easy to do business that way. Just a little slower pace, and that’s right up my alley.”

Contratto’s father was an aerospace engi-neer at Lockheed Martin in Orlando, Fla., and he always thought he would follow in his father’s foot-steps.

Contratto built model airplanes and cars when he was a child, and his father thought he would be great in the field of engineer-ing. Contratto, while in high school in Florida, decided he would shadow other aerospace engineers at nearby Eglin Air Force Base in Ft. Walton Beach.

“I realized that I hated it,” he said. “Small office, no windows. Sitting at a computer at a desk all day was not my cup of tea.”

It was then he began to think about dentistry as a career. He said he thought it would be a profession he would be good at. He said he has good motor skills and gets along well with others. He began to think that it would be a “good fit” for him.

Contratto describes his business as “bread and butter dentistry,” such as crowns, bridges and fill-ings.

“Generally, we just try to keep people’s teeth healthy and working well,” he said. “That includes extractions and root canals.”

He said McKinney stopped doing root canals several years ago, and it

while to get some of the old equipment together, but it still works fine.

However, Contratto does refer some of his patients to a specialist in certain cases.

“I don’t do all root canals, I don’t do all extrac-tions,” he said. “I know my limitations. If I don’t feel like I can do it right, I’ll send them to someone who can.”

Contratto said his office uses nitrus oxide, or “laugh-ing gas,” to help calm the fears and anxiety of those who get nervous at the den-tist’s office. However, they do not do sedations.

“I know there are some dentists out there that do, but we don’t,” he said.

Contratto said that he is currently working on “bringing the business up to date” with new paint. He said he and his staff are also working on a website for the business. While Contratto does not have a website at the time, online informa-tion about his office can be found at www.facebook.com/TalladegaDentist.

“We’re trying to get with the times,” he said.

Contratto lives in Irondale with his wife, Erin, who is an internal medicine doctor at UAB, and his 9-month-old son, David. He hopes to move closer to Talladega in the future, possibly to the Pell City area.

“I’m trying to get her (his wife) to move out to the country with me,” he said.

Contratto’s office hours are 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

The office is locat-ed at 116 Coffee St. in Talladega.

Keith Blankenship, owner of Munford Auto and Truck Parts, brought his business to Munford two-and-a-half years ago to serve farmers, loggers and truckers, as well as its auto-mobile owners.

“A community like this right here, this community has got a little bit of every-thing,” Blankenship said. “People don’t realize it, but it does.”

He said he “has always been in the parts business.” Before moving his busi-ness to 1st Avenue, it was located on Twin Churches Road in Munford. He said the relocation was an effort to increase business.

Blankenship said his warehouse is stocked with several thousand parts.

“It’s hard to say what all we’ve got in here,” he said.

Concerning his custom-er base, Blankenship said, “Who are our customers? They’re farmers, loggers, truckers — just everybody. We primarily target the heavy truck market, but we do target some automotive stuff.”

Some of Blankenship’s best selling parts are brake parts and filters for large trucks.

He said that any parts involving “friction mate-rial” are among his best selling items.

While he said his cus-tomer base for automobiles is still growing, he sells a lot of parts like belts, filters and wipers.

“We carry good qual-ity parts,” he said. “For the quality of the parts, it’s a competitive price. Of

course, our prices may not be competitive to a less quality part.

“That’s what gets you a lot of times. You can buy something cheaper, but you’re buying lesser qual-ity.”

Blankenship said there is a difference between his truck customers and his auto customers. He said that “everybody wants a $15 or $20 set of brake pads,” but what they don’t realize is that if they will spend the extra $10 and get a $30 set of brake pads, those pads will last “twice or three times” longer than the $15-$20 set.

He recommends that people “just buy you a $30 set and be done with it for a while.

“That’s one of the things I run into, most all your truck customers, they want

the best you can put on a truck, cause they won’t have to fool with it for a longer period of time,” he said. “Lots of automotive people don’t do that.”

Blankenship said the fact many auto owners will settle for cheaper parts is “what makes the automo-tive stuff so competitive.”

Munford Auto and Truck Parts offers ia 24 hour, seven day a week call out service. Blankenship said because of the sched-ule of the area’s farmers — the weekends and long summer days —he is on call around the clock.

“Somebody needs some-thing, they call us and we’ll be out there to open the doors for them,” he said.

Blankenship’s wife, Michelle, works for the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind, on the campus

of the Helen Keller School. His 7-year-old son, Wesley, is a student at Munford Elementary. Blankenship hopes one day the two will move into the business.

“This is her retirement deal when she retires from Helen Keller,” he said. “It’ll be her and my son’s deal.

About the time she retires, he will be big enough to start really helping around here.”

While Blankenship has been at his new location less than three years, he is optimistic about the future and pleased with the busi-ness.

Caribe Club and Marina is branching out to offer Cottages at Caribe.

“We have made new additions to the club and are also building cottag-es across the road,” said Bobby Smith, who owns Caribe Club and Marina with his wife, Diane.

Caribe Club and Marina is located at 84 Blue Eye Road West in Lincoln,

where Franks Supper Club originated decades ago.

Smith said he and his wife opened Caribe Club and Marina last June. The couple also own Montana Saloon & Grill, and said they wanted a club where members could arrive by water or by land — a desti-nation where people could come and spend the day.

Caribe Club and Marina features a 260-foot board-

screen. But movie star Matthew McConaughey took some of his songs and got them played.

“The next thing I know, I got some royalty checks in the mail,” Barden said.

One of the plans for the future at My Music Store is jam sessions.

“We’ve got a stage set up and are going to start a local chapter of song-writers. We want to invite musicians to come down, pick and sing on open night. We’ll let everyone know when we start this,” he said.

Shown at the North Street Bar are, from the left, artist Tommy Moorehead, proprietor Kenneth Williamson and Brett Williamson.

North Street Bar a place forpeople to gather on the SquareBy LAURANATION-ATCHISONHome Lifestyles editor

The space is beautiful once again, its original wood floors shining and the stained glass window insets bright and polished.

And once again, this building on North Street is a destination, a place for people to gather and meet, shop and enjoy music and art and all kinds of enter-tainment.

The building on Talladega’s downtown square is remembered by many through the years as a true-to-life soda fountain in the 1940s and ‘50s.

The place where people once got together for ice cream floats and sodas and other treats is now home to two new businesses and building owner Luke Montgomery smiles at the new life his building is enjoying.

At the front is the North Street Bar, and in back, facing Court Street, is The Pigeon’s Roost, where refurbished fur-nishings and home décor items of all kinds can be found. The Pigeon’s Roost is owned by Wayne and Lorie Sims.

Montgomery bought the building in his home-town about a year ago, and

said originally the build-ing served as a three-story hotel.

He intends to work on the two upper floors as well, but said there’s lots of work there to be done.

Getting the street level floor up to code was a lot of work, and Montgomery said he had good guid-ance from city officials on obtaining the necessary permits and information for getting the work done.

As for the North Street Bar, proprietor Kenny Williamson has rented the space and has diverse plans in store for the place.

Of course, there’s the bar where people can get

together and gather, and the space is also available for private parties and spe-cial occasions.

Williamson now lives in Calera and is a social worker for a hospice ser-vice, but said he is plan-ning to move to Talladega in the near future.

Aside from being a meeting place, the North Street Bar is also an art gallery of sorts, with artist and owner of LMo&Co Galllery Lindsey Moses in charge of selling the art dis-played inside the bar and artist Tommy Moorehead holding his Tuesday night

walk with boat tie-ups for 10-12 boats and room to expand. There is a pool, with a beach area, about 15-by-80 feet, along one side and tables, beach chairs and loungers on both sides of the pool. There is also a swim-up pool bar.

Members can also relax in the hot tub or steam room, and there are pri-vate showers with chang-ing areas.

“If you want to spend time on the lake, then shower and change before dinner, you can do that here,” Diane Smith said.

Bobby Smith said the club has also added games, including shuffleboard, a pool table and dart board. There is a boat launch for members only.

The club has a resort-casual attire, so members

can enjoy great food in a relaxing atmosphere. The food has a Caribbean theme and there is a full bar with mixed drinks, draft beer and signature drinks and signature dishes.

Caribe Club and Marina is open Thursdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. until.

Bobby Smith said con-struction is under way for Cottages at Caribe.

“We have both two-bed-room and three-bedroom versions,” he said. “Both are 1,250 square feet and feature two bathrooms, a large tile walk-in shower in the master bathroom, tub in the guest bathroom, energy-efficient appli-ances, including refrig-erator, stove, microwave, dishwasher, washer and dryer, a two-car garage, privacy-fenced backyard and more.”

Possibilitiesare endlessat Brenda’sEyeglass PlaceBy LAURANATION-ATCHISONHome Lifestyles editor

Walk inside Brenda’s Eyeglass Place at 906 North St. E. in Talladega and you’ll think you’re in a vir-tual eyeglass emporium.

From the wall-to-wall displays of hundreds of snazzy frames to the elegant and comfortable atmo-sphere, Brenda’s is a desti-nation for a friendly and professional place to meet your eye care needs.

Brenda Hunley is front and center when you walk in, she’s the gal to greet you and get your eye care needs met. She is a board certified optician and stays totally on top of the latest styles and trends in the very best eye wear out there.

Then there’s Deborah Edwards, she’s board certi-fied and a fellow of the National Academy of Opticians. She, too, has a caring and personal touch with her clients, and knows that finding just the right glasses is important to the clients.

Jane’e Brown Edwards, Deborah Edwards’ daugh-ter-in-law, is also part of the team at Brenda’s.

She assists in all areas of the business, and especially in the business part of the operation.

Optician Lauran Flynn has worked with Hunley for 10 years, and fits right into the totally personal approach at Brenda’s.

The resident eye doctor at Brenda’s is Elizabeth P. Hitchcock, O.D., and she’s a graduate of the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis.

She is a native of Hazelhurst, Miss., and said she always knew that she would find a career in health care.

She worked for an optometrist while in col-lege, majoring in biology at Mississippi College, and says that probably influ-enced her decision.

“It’s a great feel-ing when you know you have improved someone’s vision,” she said.

The feeling is especially close to her heart when treating children.

“When you have a child who has never known how clear their vision can be, it really is especially ful-filling,” she said. “It gives them a whole new world.”

Providing corrective lenses and/or contacts is just part of what she deems important.

“We are so concerned with total eye health, and can screen for diseases of the eye,” she said. “We can take pictures of the back of the eye and check for glau-coma, even have tests done for diabetes and high blood pressure, which can affect your eyes.”

Hitchcock said her career is a very rewarding one.

You can find Brenda’s Eyeglass Place on Facebook and on their website, where

they also offer lots of spe-cials and coupons with great discounts.

Right now, there’s a spe-cial price for eye exams for $65 through the end of March.

Hunley and Edwards have worked together in eye care since 1995 and both love the professional ser-vice and extra care they can offer.

Their frames range from the traditional to the “hot.” And if you don’t find what you want in house, they will find it for you.

From “bling” complete with Swarovski crystals to conservative traditional styles, Brenda’s Eyeglass Place has choices across the board.

From the “Jackie-O” styles to the sporty types, you’ll find them all at Brenda’s.

Brenda’s Eyeglass Place is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

art classes at North Street Bar.

On any Tuesday night, you’ll find a dozen or so artists taking Moorehead’s tutelage, working in oils and watercolors and acryl-ics or any other medium.

Soft jazz or favorite old-ies play in the background and the setting is one per-fect for the artsy set.

The folks heading up North Street Bar also have plans for live entertainment on Fridays and Saturdays, and hope to feature local and regional performers.

Moorehead will herd up that part of the operation, and is planning an across-the-board approach to the musical entertainment.

The restoration of the building fits in with what the nonprofit organization Antique Talladega has had in mind all along for the city’s downtown district.

Formed almost 20 years ago, Antique Talladega has worked to restore and reju-venate the city’s downtown district.

North Street Bar and The Pigeon’s Roost fit right in with the organization’s hopes, Antique Talladega’s board chairman Bill McGehee said.

“We are so proud to have this addition to our downtown area,” he said. “It is exactly what we hope to see taking place.”

There are distinct offer-ings to put in place down-town and McGehee said The North Street Bar and The Pigeon’s Roost are totally meeting those cri-teria.

“We need specialty shops, and businesses that offer something different,” he said. “I think these busi-nesses really meet the need to promote downtown with unique and quality prod-ucts that will draw people here.”

A familiar taste has returned to Talladega, albeit with a new name, a new location and a couple of new attractions on the menu.

The predecessor of Taki’s Grill, Pano’s, did good business in Talladega, but there were problems with their building. They moved first to Lincoln, then to Childersburg, but, according to owner Sakratis Kappi, they were

always looking to return to Talladega.

“There was just noth-ing else available in town,” he said, “until this build-ing came open,” referring to the former City Buffet Chinese Restaurant in the Walmart shopping center. “We had to negotiate for a few months, but finally we were able to come back.”

Pano’s was owned by Kappi’s mother, Nicky, but he and his father are the owner’s of the new ven-ture.

The menus for the two restaurants are similar,

although Taki’s, which is named after Kappi’s son, has added fried and grilled pork chops to the menu, along with country fried steak and vegetable sides.

“I would have to say our house specials are our meat sauce and our Alfredo, although probably the post popular would be the grilled chicken salad, the chopped sirloin ham-burger and the steaks,” Kappis said about three weeks after opening. “It’s good to be back. It’s like coming back home.”

Sokratis Kappis and his mother, Nicky, at Taki’s Grill in Talladega. The major difference between Sakratis’ establishment and Nicky’s, known as Pano’s, is the presence of pork chops and country fried steak on the menu and the addition of vegetables.

New name, same goodtaste at Taki’s Grill

ple in various positions.

Italian specialties listed on the menu include spa-ghetti, chicken or eggplant parmesan, cheese ravioli, baked ziti, chicken caccia-tore, ziti pomodoro, pasta Romano, lasagna, tour of Italy (spaghetti, lasagna, ravioli), fettuccini, shrimp and chicken Alfredo, Cajun shrimp and chicken Alfredo, fettuccini coro-nary, chicken piñata and chicken marshal. Other

menu items include grilled chicken breast, chicken strips, smothered chicken, grilled salmon and shrimp, and baked and fried tila-pia.

Taki’s is not currently licensed to sell alcohol, but Kappis said that is some-thing he sees coming up in the future. “We’re just not there yet,” he said.

They are open Mondays through Thursdays from

11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with most lunch entrees starting at $5.95. Dinner entrees start at $6.95 and top out at $15.95 for the rib eye steak.
