Dynamic, innovative, visionary and modern are only a few of the words that describe Room to Bloom 2013. On behalf of

the Mint Museum Auxiliary, we invite you to join us! This year marks many milestones, including the sixtieth anniversary of

the Room to Bloom Celebration (formerly the Home & Garden Tour), and creates a one-of-a-kind opportunity to recognize

generations of Auxiliary leadership and to celebrate more than $12 million in donations including funds and acquisitions.

Under the careful eye of Auxiliary leadership, we are moving in a modern direction with a series of fresh, engaging and

experiential programs that include the unveiling of two significant Auxiliary acquisitions.

Funds raised this spring will support a year-long art program targeting a Project L.I.F.T. school that serves students in

an economically challenged Charlotte community. It will also finance a grade level of Charlotte-Mecklenburg School

students touring the museum’s blockbuster exhibition, Inventing the Modern World: Decorative Arts at the World’s

Fairs 1851-1939, opening in September 2013. Your patronage is vitally important as it not only allows the Auxiliary to

fund these critical educational initiatives, but also to sponsor ongoing educational programs for the community and

acquisitions on behalf of The Mint Museum.

We express our warmest thanks to our sponsors, patrons, party hosts, committee members and Auxiliary volunteers

who share not only their resources, but also their incredible talent and passion to help move forward the Auxiliary and

its important mission. Thank you for helping the Auxiliary bloom in 2013!

In 1936, The Mint Museum opened as North Carolina’s first art museum,

although it had no collection. A year later, four paintings comprised its

arts holdings. Over the next two decades, the collection grew slowly

and was entirely dependent on local donations.

In 1956, the Mint Museum Auxiliary was founded by Mrs. H.T. Cosby and

a group of interested friends to provide financial support to and to broaden

public support of The Mint Museum. The first major project sponsored by the

Auxiliary was the Home Tour which had been started by Mrs. Harold C. Dwelle

as a benefit for the museum in 1953. With the founding of the Auxiliary,

a long roster of members have since contributed thousands of volunteer

hours to generate funds to support The Mint Museum through educational

offerings and acquisitions for the museum’s permanent collection.

In addition to the Home Tour (now known as the Room to Bloom

Celebration), the Auxiliary has supported various fundraisers which

have included the Mint Museum Shop (1957-1998), the Mint Museum

Antiques Show (1967-2004), the Mint to Be Yours Tag Sale (2007-2010)

and the Fall EnrichMINT Forum started in 2011. The Room to Bloom

Celebration, the Auxiliary’s largest annual fundraiser, will have its 60th

Anniversary in 2013.

Of the 35,000 items in The Mint Museum’s collection, the Auxiliary has donated

over 3,800. These works of art touch every department of the museum:

American Art, Art of the Ancient Americas, Craft+Design, Decorative Arts, European Art, Fashion, and Modern & Contemporary Art.

The rich journey began in 1960 with the Auxiliary’s first acquisition In the Glen by American painter John LaFarge. Other

highlights from the 1960s include works by the English painter Frederick Richard Lee and American painters, William

McDougal Hart and William Samuel Horton.

In the 1970s, the collection continued to grow with several

significant acquisitions. The oldest piece in the Chinese

Collection, Storage Jar, dates to 2200 BC. Also purchased

during this decade were works by Elliot Dangerfield,

Benjamin West, Richard Anuskiewicz, Thomas Sully,

Richard Champion, Benjamin Luks, Maurice Prendergast,

Ernest Lawson and William James Glackens.

The 1980s provided a time of tremendous growth for both

the museum and the Auxiliary. In 1985, the Auxiliary created

EMMA, the Endowment for Mint Museum Acquisitions. The

purpose of the endowment is to acquire works of art that

support the Collections Plan of The Mint Museum that also

appeal to the demographic and sensibilities of the Auxiliary

membership. These funds are managed by the Foundation

for the Carolinas. Significant acquisitions purchased in the

1980s include works by Charles Burchfield, George Wesley

Bellows, Harvey K. Littleton, Frances Cotes and the Auman

Collection of North Carolina Pottery.

The Auxiliary began the Fashion Collection in 1972 which

now numbers over 10,000 items. In the 1990s, the

Auxiliary helped the Fashion Collection reach a new level

by funding the museum purchases of exquisite examples

of historical costume and haute couture from Jacques

Doucet, Christian Dior, Madame Gres, the House of

Chanel, Pierre Balmain, Hubert de Givenchy, Gianni

Versace, Pierre Cardin, Arnold Scaasi, Carolina Herrera,

and Oscar de la Renta.

In the 1990s, the Auxiliary also purchased paintings by

William Charles Anthony Frerichs, Jerome Thompson,

and funded the museum purchases several works of

Spanish Colonial Art.

To usher in the 21st century, the Auxiliary acquired works

by Arthur Bowen Davies, Augusta Savage, Laura Coombs

Hills, Blanche Lazzell and an extraordinary collection of

American ceramics.

2010 marked the opening of the Mint Museum Uptown. To

commemorate the occasion, the Auxiliary commissioned

its first work ever as part of the Ten-Ten-Ten Project.

Inspired by the women of the Auxiliary, Ted Noten

created Slow: Eleven Women and 400 Daisies. Noten

was named Dutch Artist of the Year in 2012. In 2011, the

Auxiliary hosted Oscar de la Renta for a memorable and

extraordinary fashion show. Mr. de la Renta donated a ball

gown in honor of the Auxiliary. In addition to these works,

the Auxiliary also purchased works by Dario Robleto and

Albert Elbaz of Lanvin.

The Auxiliary has grown from a small group of 60 women to

over 600 members spanning several generations. To date,

the Auxiliary has donated over twelve million dollars to

The Mint Museum including funds and acquisitions. The

six decade partnership between The Mint Museum and

the Mint Museum Auxiliary has been rich, strong, and

beneficial to both the museum and the city of Charlotte.

Beautiful says “her work is timeless and glamorous all spun together with a keen fashion sense…. she’s a fearless,

exuberant accessorizer.”

Her first book, MARY MCDONALD: INTERIORS, The Allure of Style was published by Rizzoli in October of 2010 and

is currently in its fourth printing. Written with wit and charm, the book showcases her sophisticated and ravishing

interiors, divided thematically, and includes more than 250 sumptuous photographs.

McDonald is currently working on her second book due in 2014. Her first fabric collection for F. Schumacher has

launched early this year, followed by an extensive rug line for Patterson Flynn and Martin. She continues to add new

designs each season to her lighting collection for Robert Abbey in tandem while working on projects in New York, Utah,

later in the decade she drew her inspiration from the natural world after spending increasing amounts of time time on Long

Island and traveling in Europe and the Caribbean.

The painting acquired by the Auxiliary for The Mint Museum comes from this critical period in Hartigan’s career. Titled Scotland,

it was painted in 1960 just before the artist moved to Baltimore. It is related to the series of landscapes that Hartigan had

been developing during the previous few years and is among the largest and most abstract of these, filled with rich blues,

and punctuated by touches of green, orange, and pink. A few years before

painting Scotland, the artist stated: “I have found my ‘subject,’ it concerns

that which is vulgar and vital in American modern life, and the possibilities of

its transcendence into the beautiful…I want to distill my subject matter until

I have its essence. Then the rawness must be resolved into form and unity.”

Paintings by Hartigan from this period were eagerly acquired by collectors

and museums as they were completed and are, therefore, relatively

scarce in the marketplace. Among the institutions that currently own

major paintings by Hartigan are: The Museum of Modern Art; The

Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The

Brooklyn Museum; The Baltimore Art Museum; The Cleveland Museum

of Art; The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden; The Minneapolis

Institute of Arts; the Smithsonian American Art Museum; The Whitney

Museum of American Art; and The National Gallery of Art.

Scotland has remained in the family of the original owners since their

purchase and retains its original gilded strip frame. This key acquisition is perfectly aligned with the stated needs of the

Collections Development Plans of the departments of both American and Modern and Contemporary Art, helping to fill in

the gap that exists as one department transitions to the other in the 1950s and bolstering the museum’s growing collection

of works by women artists. Scotland will easily anchor a gallery and could be installed alongside other paintings in the

collection such as our recently-acquired canvases by Lynn Drexler, Theodoros Stamos, Gordon Onslow Ford, and Robert

DeNiro, Sr., allowing the museum to begin to be able to tell the story of this important moment in American art history.

By Jonathan stuhlman | Curator of American Art

The Auxiliary is thrilled to announce that, in consultation with Mint

Museum curators Jonathan Stuhlman and Brad Thomas, it has

acquired two acquisitions: a monumental painting by Grace Hartigan

for The Mint Museum in honor of its founding members and past

leaders and a video installation by Jennifer Steinkamp in honor of

future generations of Auxiliary members.

Hartigan was one of most celebrated American artists of the 1950s.

Although trained as a mechanical draftsman during World War II, she

soon developed a love of painting and modern art. Hartigan moved to

New York in 1945 and by the end of the decade had met and befriended

artists such as Milton Avery, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and Willem

de Kooning. In 1948 Hartigan saw a number of recent large-scale

abstractions by Pollock and De Kooning, and she spent a great deal of

time talking with both artists about their work. This experience had a tremendous impact on the direction of her art, and she

soon set about developing her own abstract idiom. By 1950 she had been selected for inclusion in an exhibition of new talent

organized by the influential critics Clement Greenberg and Meyer Shapiro, which was followed by her first solo exhibition at

the Tibor de Nagy Gallery, and The Museum of Modern Art’s acquisition of her painting The Persian Jacket in 1953. Hartigan’s

ascent to prominence in the male-dominated New York art world of the period was cemented by her inclusion (as the only

female artist) in the important exhibition “The New American Painting,” which was organized by the Museum of Modern Art in

1958 to demonstrate the best examples of recent trends in American Art and traveled to eight European countries.

Although recognizable imagery floated in and out of her paintings throughout her career, Hartigan made a name for herself

during the 1950s with her powerful adaptation of the abstract expressionist style. Her work of the 1950s is distinguished by

its vibrant colors and powerful brushwork, as well as the way that the artist skillfully abstracted her subject matter. Many

of Hartigan’s paintings, like those of her colleague De Kooning, retain recognizable elements from the natural world. During

the mid-1950s Hartigan’s canvases were filled with imagery relating to the urban environment of the New York streets;

Jennifer Steinkamp employs computer animation and new media to

create projection installations in order to explore ideas about nature,

architecture, motion, and phenomenological perception. Her digitally

animated works make use of the interplay between actual space and

illusionistic space, thus creating environments in which the roles of

the viewing subjects and the art objects become blurred. She has said,

“As my ideas and the work developed, I found I could dematerialize

architecture by combining light, space, and movement.”

In 2012, through the generosity of The Mint Museum Auxiliary,

Jennifer Steinkamp’s video work titled Orbit 12, was acquired for the

collection. Themes of the natural world as a spiritual and transcendent

space abound in Orbit 12. Projected to monumental proportions on

the gallery wall, the viewer is immersed in constellations of bramble,

branches, and leaves that swirl and meander like celestial nebulae in constant flux. Winter’s bare limbs spring forth with

colorful blossoms, while lush summer canopies give way to autumn’s warm brilliance in a never-ending cycle of seasonal

death and rebirth.

The addition of this important work is supported by the strategic goals stated in the Mint Museum’s Collection Development

Plan for Modern & Contemporary Art. As the institution is committed to strengthening its holdings of new media works

(video and time-based works in particular), Orbit 12 provides a dynamic sensory experience for visitors of all ages. In

addition, the inclusion of this new, major video work by an internationally renowned female artist enhances the presence

of women within the Mint’s holdings.

Furthermore, Jennifer Steinkamp’s “natural universe” and use of flora as a central aesthetic element align with other pivotal

works acquired by The Mint Museum Auxiliary, dating back to the organization’s inaugural acquisition of John La Farge’s In

the Glen, Portsmouth, Rhode Island (c. 1859). Subsequent related acquisitions include William Charles Anthony Frerichs’

2726

Nature’s Rushing Force (1868) in 1991, Ted Noten’s SLOW Eleven Women and 400 Daisies (2010) in 2010, and Dario

Robleto’s Defiant Gardens (2009-10).

Orbit 12 will be on view this spring in the Media Gallery in the Mint’s Modern & Contemporary Galleries as part of the

Auxiliary’s Room to Bloom celebration that honors 60 years of leadership and giving to the Museum. As Steinkamp’s work

will provide inspiration for the future, the recent acquisition of

Grace Hartigan’s seminal painting Scotland (1960) will honor

those early Auxiliary members whose vision and dedication to

the Mint continue to inform and invigorate its efforts.

Jennifer Steinkamp’s work has most recently been exhibited

in exhibitions including Visual Music, Hirshhorn Museum and

Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington DC, the

Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA; the Kemper

Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO; North Carolina

Their work is drawn from a wide range of historical styles and the use of timeless materials, but it is inspired by the unique challenges presented by each client. “The understanding of the people for whom a design is intended describes its ultimate destination. The range of our work is defined by the diversity of tastes we are asked to consider. Each environment we encounter becomes part of our palette. We strive to be available to serve the life of the project. At any phase, these spaces are always with us – seeing things that fit, reconsidering things said, dashing down ideas at a chance. Once built, we intend any space to explain itself by what it inspires one to do or feel. A success, by the hands of all the designers and craftsmen involved, is the creation of a place for people who want to be there.”

BACkDrOP OF CHinOis PAlAis FABriC AnD 8 yDs. lAByrintH tAPe): Inspired by Mary McDonald’s love of Chinoiserie, this finely woven linen print is derived from an antique Chinese painted silk mural panel. The delicately interpreted design features exotic birds among a flowering tree of peonies and cherry blossoms. The grandly scaled pattern retains the mural-like aspect of the original panel, with ground below and sky above the graceful arbor. Its scale and height combine with a clear and soft color palette, creating it a perfect choice for elegant curtain panels, duvets or wall upholstery. This richly embroidered tape is inspired by an intricate Chinese fretwork design. The subtly shimmering embroidery adds a silky appearance to this elegant trimming, which is interpreted in shades of soft grey against ivory cotton grounds. The quiet geometry of Labyrinth Tape will add a polished look to curtain edges, upholstery and bed skirts, pillows and chair backs.

By Brian gallagher | Curator of Decorative Arts

This groundbreaking international exhibition (21 September 2013-19

January 2014) presents outstanding examples of glass, furniture, jewelry,

ceramics, precious metalwork, and textiles displayed at the World’s Fairs

between The Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations in

London in 1851 and the New York World’s Fair in 1939. Many of these

objects have never before left their respective institutions or countries.

World’s Fairs were the most important vehicles for debuting advancements

in modern living. Some Fairs were broad in scope, displaying decorative arts

alongside paintings, sculpture, industrial design and agricultural products;

others concentrated on exhibiting decorative arts alone. Both types of

expositions functioned as showcases and marketplaces for design. Above

all, they democratized design, exposing countless visitors and others to the

latest artistic and technological achievements of their time.

Inventing the Modern World comprises approximately 200 objects shown

at every major World’s Fair from 1851 to 1939. Large and small in scale,

these seminal objects are culled from private and public collections,

primarily in America and Europe. Among the many lenders are the

Metropolitan Museum of Art, MAK – Museum for Applied Arts/Contemporary Art, Vienna, Designmuseum Danmark, and the

Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. A fully-illustrated scholarly catalogue accompanies the exhibition. Inventing the Modern

World: Decorative Arts at the World’s Fairs, 1851-1939 is co-organized by Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, and The Nelson-

Atkins Museum of Art. Major support for this exhibition was provided by Wells Fargo, the Windgate Charitable Foundation and

the National Endowment for the Arts with additional support from Duke Energy and the Southern Christmas Show.
