There will be more than 2,000 runners at the 2013 XTERRATrail Run World Championship at Kualoa Ranch onNovember 24, and just about every one of them has areason to run. It will be tough to top Alan Huneycutt’sreason to run. Huneycutt is part of the Manning Up USATrailblazers, which is an organization for people who haveovercome physical and emotional challenges to accomplishathletic goals and help raise funds for charities.

Six members of the Manning Up USAteam will be running in the XTERRATrail Run World Championship thisyear, and they are helping to raisefunds for TEAM 2 END AIDS. TheTEAM 2 END AIDS group is bringingmore than 40 runners to participate inan effort to raise close to $200,000 forAIDS Project Los Angeles.

In March of 2012, Huneycutt was in a horrific car accident inNorth Carolina. It left him with a broken back, broken ribs, bruised lungs and one deceased friend. After a majorsurgery to repair his back, followed by two months ofrecovery, Huneycutt had to learn how to walk again.

Less than a year after his accident, he started entering 5Kraces as part of his recovery process. “Prior to the accident,I could not stand to run or do any cardio, and did none whatso ever,” said Huneycutt. “The only thing I enjoyed to dowas lifting weights. After my accident, I really just wanted tofocus on an overall healthy lifestyle and I couldn’t imaginethat without some form of cardiovascular activity. I began torun on the treadmill at my gym, just short runs to begin with. Then my manager at the time (Sam Nicholson) convincedme to do my first 5K with him and ever since then I havebeen hooked on running.”

The 21K course at Kualoa Ranch will be the longest race ofHuneycutt’s life, and also his first experience in a trail race.He still has lingering injuries from the car accident, so heoften incorporates weight training and swimming into hisworkouts on the days when he can’t run.

“I would love to be able to say that there is a time I wish tofinish in, but since I have yet to run a half-marathon or a trailrun I feel like that is just inconceivable,” Huneycutt said. “Ijust want to be able to go out on the course and run as hardas I can and be there to support my team to do the same.”

Huneycutt, 22, is a student at the University of NorthCarolina at Charlotte, pursuing a degree in Sociology.

Other members of the Manning Up USA Trailblazers havesimilar inspirational stories, including Jeremy Manning(founder of the group who overcame drug addiction andfamily abuse), Mylee Cardenas (a single mother/formerArmy drill instructor/breast cancer survivor), Alex Minsky (amilitary wounded warrior who had his right leg amputatedbelow the thigh after he was involved in an IED explosion inAfghanistan), Jessie Sink (lost part of his right arm in anelectric fire accident) and Randy Miyashiro (abuse survivor).

TEAM 2 END AIDS – or T2 for short – is an enduranceevent training program based in Southern California thatbenefits AIDS Project Los Angeles. Last year, T2 brought 25runners to the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship, andthey raised $99,000 from that race alone. They alsoreturned to Southern California with stories and photos thatspread throughout their running community.

“When we decided to mix things up a bit last year and addour first trail race with XTERRA, people really liked the idea, but I'm not sure they understood what made trail racesdifferent than other races,” said Kerry Quakenbush, theDirector of Endurance Events for T2. “After the XTERRArace last year, people started sending back photos andfeedback on their wonderful experience with XTERRA atKualoa Ranch. That's when word got around on socialmedia sites and new people wanted to give trail running atry. The trip to Oahu for this race is awesome. You get thebest of the tourist parts of the island (Waikiki, etc.) and youget the gorgeous scenery of the North Shore.”

T2 already has 45 runners signed up, and the fundraisingeffort for the race has already surpassed last year’s total.“We are already at $119,000 this year and would ideally liketo hit $175,000,” Quakenbush said.

THE XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP COURSELength 21km/13.1 milesStarting Elevation 50’Lowest point 27’Highest point 751’Total climbing approx 1,700’Trails open dirt road, dual track dirt road,

single track & sometimes no track

As described by race director “Kahuna Dave” Nicholas

The start for all three race distances is at the Kaaawa Valleybase camp. Runners leave on a hard-packed dirt road andwith a quarter-mile face their first task – a long, undulating1-mile climb.

At the 1.5-mile mark, the 5K runners will head down apasture and back towards the ocean and the finish line (seeyellow dotted line on map). The world championship 21Kand 10K runners will continue on the upper road untilheading steeply downhill, some on road, some on grass tothe fantastic remains of the “Lost City of Atlantis” (from themovie Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, starring Dwayne“The Rock” Johnson).

A hard right after the Atlantis temple, and the 21K and 10Krunners head to the very back of Kaaawa Valley beforeturning around and connecting to the scenic single track.

Interesting note: this section of single track was createdyears ago for the legendary Hawaiian Mountain Tour bikeraces. It’s high pasture that dips into volcanic gulches to riseagain into the sun. You’ll do this several times before the10K heads to the finish. For the 21K world champ runners, the fun has just begun.

The second aid station for 21K and 10K is the beginning ofthe single track. The 10K runners will take a left turn downthe slope about a quarter-mile into the single track (seegreen dotted line on map) and take their own, new singletrack back to join their 5K brothers and sisters at theKaaawa Hawaiian Village.

Meanwhile, the 21K runners will eventually get back on dirtroads and past a cave from the move Pearl Harbor as they

Page 9: 2013 PRESS GUIDE - Triathlon · The XTERRA Trail Run World Championship Press Guide is designed to provide the media with useful information about the 2013 race, the athletes competing

9

move from one valley to another. After aid station 3, runnerswill head into construction for the new Kualoa TropicalGardens and onto some up-and-down single/double track. Here, runners venture deep into forest, and out on theedges with spectacular ocean overlooks and finally a dipinto a dark, tropical rain forest with three stream crossings. If it looks familiar, think about the scenes from the movieBattleship.

Just when runners might be thinking “this isn’t so bad,” theterrain starts to climb. Easy at first, and then brutally steep, and totally exposed to the sun. Just as you think it hasleveled, the lie comes true and it is up again. At last a feedstation that appears to be a dead end, but it’s not. We are

taking you up narrow single track – by narrow, we mean afoot at most – the spine that separates Hakipu’u andKaaawa valleys. You’ll wish you could stop as you can seea thousand miles of blue Pacific Ocean no matter which wayyou turn. Then the single track plunges steep downhill, where nobody goes except for the 21K runners on this day.Muddy, rutty, steep drop-offs, slimy and slippery. We’ve putropes to help you stay upright and I guarantee you will needto use them.

The good news? That steep downhill section is only about aquarter-mile. At the bottom, you’ll find the terrain familiar asyou return to the back of Kaaawa Valley and run thatgorgeous, fast and soft single track to the finish.

THE CONTENDERS

The 2013 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship willfeature defending world champions, former worldchampions, a new national champ, former nationalchamps, and numerous other runners with internationalexperience. In essence, it will be the deepest field of titlecontenders in the six-year history of the event.

Among the men’s contenders:

• Joseph Gray (pictured) from Washington is the returningco-champion. He and Ben Bruce crossed the finish linesimultaneously last year and were declared co-champs.Bruce is not in the race this year due to a schedulingconflict. Gray has sustained his success in 2013, includinga runner-up showing at the XTERRA Trail Run NationalChampionship at Utah, and a seventh-place finish at theWorld Mountain Running Championship at Poland.

• Max King from Oregon is the runner most associatedwith XTERRA Trail Run success. He won the XTERRATrail Run World Championship at Kualoa Ranch in 2008,2009, 2010 and 2011. He skipped it last year for the birthof his daughter. He was slowed by an ankle injury in recentmonths, but said it is now at “95 percent and feeling good.”

• Patrick Smyth from Utah will be making his debut atKualoa Ranch after bursting onto the XTERRA Trail Runscene two months ago. He won the XTERRA Trail RunNational Championship in his home state of Utah inSeptember, finishing ahead of such stalwarts as Gray andKing. He was invited to join the Nike Trail Team after thatvictory. This will be his first time racing in the heat andhumidity of Hawaii, and only the second trail run race of hiscareer. Most of his previous success has come in road andtrack races.

• Willie Schefer from Maui, Hawaii, placed fifth overall atlast year’s XTERRA Trail Run World Championship. It washis first try at the Kualoa Ranch course, and that yearunder his belt should help this year. He was introduced totrail running on the island of Maui a year ago, and said hehas been training on trails throughout 2013. He is a two-time winner of the XTERRA Kapalua Trail Runs 10K on hishome island of Maui.

• Nathan Carlson from Honolulu, Hawaii, has emerged asone of the top trail runners on the island of Oahu. Herecently won the XTERRA Gunstock Ranch Trail Run 21K– which was staged only a few miles away from KualoaRanch – by a whopping 12-minute margin.

• Nathan Peters from Salt Lake City will be making hisdebut at Kualoa Ranch after a fifth-place overall showingat the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship in hishome state of Utah. Earlier this year, he won the SkylineMarathon in Utah, and established a new course record.

• Matthew Battley is only 19, but he has alreadyestablished himself as the top trail runner in the XTERRANew Zealand Trail Run circuit. He placed first overall atthe XTERRA Rotorua Festival 21K, and then secondoverall at the XTERRA Trail Challenge Waihi 21K.

• Roberto Mandje from Boulder, Colorado, placed sev-enth overall at last year’s XTERRA Trail Run WorldChampionship, and is focused on improving his standingthis year. He entered several XTERRA Trail Run eventsacross America in 2013, and won the XTERRA Lake LasVegas 21K and the XTERRA Cheyenne Mountain TrailRun 12K. He also placed second overall at the XTERRAOak Mountain Trail Run 20K and the XTERRA BeaverCreek Trail Run 10K.

Several other dark horse contenders could emerge, asthere are runners from 10 countries & 36 different states.

“It takes a little bit of everything,” Max King said of what ittakes to be successful at Kualoa Ranch. “Strong technicalskills are a must, but parts of the course also require ahigh level of speed as well. The biggest thing that I’venoticed is that the significant hill at mile 9 really wipespeople out. Climbing ability is important from the gun, buthaving climbing endurance in this race is even moreimportant.”

Page 11: 2013 PRESS GUIDE - Triathlon · The XTERRA Trail Run World Championship Press Guide is designed to provide the media with useful information about the 2013 race, the athletes competing

The women’s field is just as deep this year, with a handful ofcontenders looking to chase down the title. Among thefemale contenders:

• Lucy Smith from Canada is the defending champion whois returning to Kualoa Ranch for the third consecutive year. She placed second overall in 2011, then took thechampionship last year by an impressive two-minutemargin. She was 45 when she won the race last year, becoming the oldest runner – male or female – to win theXTERRA Trail Run World Championship.

• Polina Babkina placed third last year, but was leading therace until she took a wrong turn midway through the course.A week after last year’s race at Kualoa Ranch, she ran in theHonolulu Marathon and was the top female finisher fromHawaii. In October of this year, she was the top femalefinisher (and finished behind only one male runner) at theXTERRA Gunstock Trail Run 21K. She is originally fromRussia, but now resides in Honolulu.

• Meggan Franks from Canada will be making her debut atKualoa Ranch, almost by accident. She found out her fatherwas taking a vacation in Hawaii, and she and othermembers of the family decided to join in. She was the firstoverall female at the 2013 Canadian Mountain & TrailRunning Championships in June. She was also one of fourwomen selected to the 2013 Canadian Mountain RunningTeam that participated in the 2013 World Mountain RunningChampionships at Poland.

• Samantha McGlone from Arizona is best known as one ofthe world’s best triathletes during the decade of the 2000s,and that alone makes her a serious contender in anyendurance event. She represented Canada in the triathlonat the 2004 Olympics and was the women’s runner-up at the2007 Ironman World Championship triathlon. This will beher first appearance at the XTERRA Trail Run WorldChampionship, though she did place first overall at theXTERRA Freedom Fest Trail Run 10K at Kualoa Ranchearlier this year.

• Rose Wetzel from Washington will be making her debut atKualoa Ranch, and she will bring an impressive trackresume with her. She took first place in the women’s 5000-meter run and 800-meter run at the USATF National ClubTrack and Field Championships at New York in June of thisyear.

The elite runners will be competing for $10,000 in prizemoney, including $2,000 each to the men’s and women’swinners.

However, the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship is arace for all runners, and numerous others will be competingfor age-group titles. Every male and female age-groupchampion from the 21K championship course is consideredan XTERRA Trail Run World Champion.

Returning age-group world champs from 2012 include:Jakob Dewald (men 15-19), Polina Babkina (women 20-24),Willie Schefer (men 20-24), Joseph Gray (men 25-29), LucySmith (women 45-49), Keith Rieger (men 45-49), RaymondBrust (men 50-54), Nozomi Wade (women 55-59), EdwardBugarin (men 60-64), Lee Saltonstall (women 65-69), JonLyon (men 65-69), and Roger Kemppel (men 70-74).

There is no qualifying process to enter the XTERRA TrailRun World Championship, so the field will include a uniquemix of experienced and inexperienced XTERRA Trail Runcompetitors. The event also serves as an introductory trailrun event for runners, as there are 5K and 10K races forthose who may not feel ready for the half-marathon course.

XTERRA TRAIL RUNNING SERIES OVERVIEW

Trails of all shapes and sizes can be found around theworld. Runners of all shapes and sizes can be found aroundthe globe, too.

The combination of those two is really what the XTERRATrail Run Series is all about. If there’s a trail out there, we’lltry to find it. And then we’ll invite any and all runners tocome out and join our races.

XTERRA Trail Runs started as a side event for theXTERRA off-road triathlons, but it is now clear that the trailruns have carved their own niche in the endurance sportsworld. During the 2012-13 season, the XTERRA Trail RunSeries featured more than 80 races around the world, ranging in distance from 5 kilometers to a full-marathon 42kilometers.

Seventeen regions across the United States hosted anXTERRA Trail Run Series in 2013: Alabama, Arizona,Atlantic, Southern California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia,Hawaii, North Carolina, Pocono, Puerto Rico, SouthCarolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington. There were also XTERRA races in Arkansas, Oregon,Nevada and Iowa. National champions were crowned at theXTERRA Trail Run National Championship at SnowbasinResort near Ogden, Utah, in September.

There were also international XTERRA Trail Run races inBrazil, Canada, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, Philippines,New Zealand, and parts of Europe.

In effect, all of those races lead up to the XTERRA Trail RunWorld Championship at Kualoa Ranch. Technically, there isno qualifying process to enter the XTERRA Trail Run WorldChampionship, so runners of all ages and skill levels, fromanywhere in the world, can enter the event.

The XTERRA Trail Run World Championship was created in2008, and it has become one of the largest and most signif-icant events in the ever-growing sport of trail running.Olympic runners and triathletes, elite marathon runners andinternational champions have all made their way to KualoaRanch for the event in recent years. It now draws more than2,000 runners annually, with more than 15 countries and 35states represented.

The elite runners compete for $10,000 in prize money atKualoa Ranch, while the age-group runners compete for

medals, prizes, and the prestige of being called anXTERRA Trail Run World Champion.

In keeping with the XTERRA spirit, the XTERRA Trail RunWorld Championship includes trails for the less-competitiveand less-experienced runners. In addition to the 21Kchampionship course, there are separate 10K and 5Kraces, and there’s even an “Adventure Walk” for those whojust want to take a leisurely stroll around the park.

Of course, there is also the allure of Hawaii and KualoaRanch in particular. Located on the northeast coast of theisland of Oahu, the sights at Kualoa Ranch are nothingshort of spectacular. The 4,000-acre working cattle ranchoffers arguably the most stunning natural landscape on theisland. The scenic backdrop has been used as a filming sitefor such major movie productions as Jurassic Park,Godzilla, Pearl Harbor and 50 First Dates.

“I’m surprised,” King said. “I knew there was goodcompetition, and to be honest, I wasn’t feeling 100 percent. So at the start, there were three of us and we kind of brokeaway, and I was surprised that more guys weren’t therewith us. Then about halfway, I kind of broke away againand was really surprised to finish here that far ahead.”

King said he was suffering from a cold and a sore Achilles.“I don’t know what it is about this race,” he said. “Maybe it’sbecause of the time of year and the travel, but I never seemto come here fully healthy, so I’m just happy to win it again.”

The Trail Run World Championship at Kualoa Ranch wascreated in 2008, and King has won it every year.

KING REIGNS OVER FIELD AT XTERRA WORLDS AGAIN

MEYERHOFF TAKES WOMEN’S TITLE IN FIRST TRY

Dec. 5, 2010 – Max King (pictured) found the perfect curefor a sickness – win the XTERRA Trail Run WorldChampionship.

Despite running with flu-like symptoms, King won theXTERRA Trail Run World Championship for the thirdconsecutive year at Kualoa Ranch. King, who is from Bend,Oregon, completed the 12.9 mile course in 1 hour, 16minutes, 36 seconds.

“I didn’t even know if I was going to make it to the race thismorning, let alone win,” said King, 30. “I had a headache,my fever was going down, but I still felt terrible. But when Igot here and started running on the course, I was surprisedthat I felt a lot better than I thought I would. I guess after allthese years, running makes me feel pretty normal.”

When it comes to running XTERRA Trail RunChampionship races, King is beyond normal. He is now 6-0 in the last six major XTERRA trail run races – threeconsecutive victories in the national championship race, and now three consecutive wins in the world championshiprace.

In the women’s race, Sally Meyerhoff of Arizona took thevictory in her first try at the XTERRA Trail Run WorldChampionship.

Meyerhoff normally enters road races (she is the Americanrecord holder for a 10-mile road race), but she proved herworth on the tricky trails of Kualoa Ranch. She completedthe course in a women’s record time of 1:28:58, which wasgood for ninth place overall, and nearly eight minutesahead of the next female.

“I don’t do a ton of trail running, but I do marathons andhalf-marathons and I train really hard at the professionallevel,” said Meyerhoff, 26. “But this race tested me like I’venever been tested before.”

Indeed, Meyerhoff collapsed after crossing the finish lineand needed medical attention. She was eventually fineafter receiving intravenous fluids.

King and Meyerhoff each received $2,000.

HOW XTERRA GOT STARTEDIT REALLY STARTED in the late '80's. That's when Tom

Kiely (CEO of TEAM Unlimited - owners and producers of

XTERRA) was tasked with creating more publicity for the

Waikiki Oahu Visitors Association. His idea was sports TV.

"First, sports is part of our life blood in Hawaii, and second,

what looks good on TV? The beaches and the ocean,"

explained Kiely.

The concept was pretty simple. TV sports and

entertainment is one of the biggest industries in the world.

The travel industry is THE BIGGEST industry in the world.

Bring those two together in programming, and you've got

something big.

So he came up with the idea for the Hawaiian International

Ocean Challenge - a lifeguard skills competition that

attracted water safety specialists from Australia, New

Zealand, California, and of course, Hawaii.

Then, he forged a relationship with ESPN - the worldwide

leader in sports.

In 1990 the Ocean Challenge was broadcast on ESPN,

and millions of viewers were exposed to the beauty of

Waikiki - the sun, sand, and crystal clear blue water of the

Pacific Ocean. Subsequently, this is where David "Kahuna"

Nicholas enters the picture - as "race director."

"So we get into producing the Ocean Challenge," says

Kiely. "And now I'm thinking I've got all these athletes and

TV crews and if it costs me this much to produce one show,

it'll cost less for another, and even less for a third."

ESPN approves two more shows (Waikiki King's Race and

Diamond Head Wahine Windsurfing Classic) and in 1991

TEAM Unlimited produces three events and three TV

shows. The concept is working, and Hawaii is reaping the

benefits of the outdoor exposure the shows are generating.

"So the next year (1992) we produced seven Hawaiian

Sports Adventure Showsmultiple segments, different

stories, great scenics, and 30-minutes of entertaining, good

fun stuff," said Kiely.

Those seven shows were in addition to the Ocean

Challenge and a few others televised events, including the

inaugural Tour O' Hawaii.

"Now that was a great event," said Nicholas - now the

managing director of the XTERRA Global Tour. "The Tour

O' Hawaii happened before professional cyclists were

allowed to compete in the Olympics so the top riders from

every country kept their amateur status so they could race

in the Olympics. We just missed Lance because he signed

with Motorola, but we had George Hincapie, Jan Ulrich,

Tyler Hamilton, and dozens of others. Looking back, the

field was a who's who of international cycling."

A few years later the Olympics allowed pros to compete,

road cycling in the U.S. was on the decline, and the Tour O'

Hawaii was no more. At the same time, however, mountain

biking was taking off. So in 1995, in addition to 12 other TV

shows and several events, TEAM Unlimited produced the

Hawaiian Mountain Tour.

In doing so Nicholas and mountain bike Hall-of-Famer

Dean Crandall established the rules and held the first-ever

mountain bike stage race. This is also where many of the

XTERRA greats first appeared. The likes of Ned Overend,

Shari Kain, Melanie McQuaid, Steve Larsen, Mike Kloser,

Leslie Tomlinson, and host of others were taking part in the

Hawaiian Mountain Tour. Now these races took place at

Kualoa Ranch on Oahu, where the Koolau mountain range

meets the ocean, and the story goes that after their races

the mountain bikers would ride down to the beach and jump

in the water. It sparked a thoughtwhy not have a

mountain bike triathlon?

By 1996 TEAM Unlimited had produced more than 50

shows and sporting events, and while the idea of an off-road

triathlon was enticing - who'd pay for it?

Almost simultaneously, the Aston Hotel in Maui (now the

Wailea Marriott Resort) was shopping for a good idea for

their grand opening and the Maui Visitors Bureau was

looking for a new event that could tell a different story about

Maui's south shore because all the exposure up to that point

was golf. Well, what better way to show off the hotel and

south shore than 1) starting the race at this beautiful beach

in front of the sponsor hotel, 2) follow a race that covers 21

miles of terrain with two dozen camera's, and 3) put it on TV

for the whole world to see?

Add a phone call to Kiely from a friendly competitor in the

marketplace (to remain unnamed) inquiring on the very

subject of producing an off-road triathlon and you have all

the main ingredients for XTERRA's birth.

Kiely likes to define luck as the "intersection of

opportunity and activity." He recalls bringing Nicholas and

VP of Marketing Janet Clark into his office.

"Look, I said, so-and-so called me and said that they were

thinking about doing an off-road tri and if they do, then we're

forever second, so we have to be the first ones to do it. I

immediately called Aston and the MVB and said O.K., I've

got the idea, here's the thing, bing, bang, boom," said Kiely.

"And that's what got us started in XTERRA."
