elcome to the Rockford Park District parks and facility guide. We hope you will discover there is so MUCH offered by your Park District that you may have difficulty deciding where to invest your most precious commodity - time. Citizens expect a certain level of quality, safety, and maintenance at Rockford

Park District parks and facilities, and I would like to be the first to know if you have thoughts on ways we can improve our services.

The Rockford region is considered the amateur sports capital of the Midwest. Local amenities like Sportscore One and Two, Indoor Sports Center, Riverview Ice House and Carlson Ice Arena, and our five golf courses are tremendous assets other communities our size envy. Magic Waters is a regional tourism draw, and offers reasonably priced summer entertainment for local citizens. We are one of the few communities in the state of Illinois with an equestrian center (Lockwood Park). Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens is the third-largest conservatory in the state, and the outdoor gardens and renovated Eclipse Lagoon are new and improved Rockford landmarks. Park District museums offer not only world-class exhibits, their ongoing programs and special events make them wonderful places to explore often throughout the year.

Our 125 neighborhood parks offer you many leisure opportunities, such as picnics and concerts, healthy endeavors such as walking, bicycling, and running, as well as innovative playgrounds, skate parks, and dog parks.

fun for all Kids – fee assistanceNo child should be denied access to learning an important ability, such as swimming, or developing skills for a lifetime of enjoyment, due to their inability to pay. The Rockford Park District offers a fee assistance program called Fun For All Kids (FFAK), which offers 50–75% discounts on program registrations for those who qualify. Customers of all ages with disabilities who meet fee assistance guidelines and are residents of the Park District may also be eligible for the fee assistance program. Fee assistance must be applied for in person at one of our Customer Service locations.

Qualifying FFAK applicants can purchase Fun For All Kids Ticket Packets at a discounted rate. FFAK Ticket Packets provide individual admissions to a wide variety of Park District programs and facilities. For more information on how to apply call Customer Service at 815-987-8800.

general Information• Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in parks

and facilities where they are not sold. No carry-ins allowed.

• Firearms are not permitted in parks.

sMoke free illinois actTo protect the health and safety of all, smoking is not permitted in Park District buildings and facilities. Smoking is also prohibited on or within 50 feet of buildings, playgrounds, outdoor bleachers, and any outdoor concession owned or operated by the Rockford Park District.

eagle eye park watchPlease be alert and report

vandalism, safety hazards, fires, crime, and undesirable activities occurring in your neighborhood

park. The Rockford Park District Police are

dogs in parksDogs are welcome in the parks and on the recreation paths, but you are responsible to clean up after them. Look for "Mutt Mitts" dispensers at rec paths for your convenience. Dogs must be leashed at all times, in a heeled position (walking beside you) while in parks or on recreation paths.

please, don’t feed the geeseWhen geese eat unnatural foods like white bread, they can get an "angel wing," which prevents them from flying. Feeding geese also encourages them to stay put in areas like recreational paths, sidewalks, and parks.

geo-cachingParticipants are not required to obtain permission from the Rockford Park District, but please consider the sensitivity of the area where you hide your cache. If you decide to use ammunition boxes as caches, all sides should bear Rockford Park District issued stickers you can pick up from Customer Service. For a list of restrictions, please check out our web site, or pick up a list from Customer Service.

photosOn occasion, Rockford Park District staff may photograph or videotape participants during Park District programs/classes, events, or at our facilities. These photos may be used in Park District publications, advertisements, or videos. If you do not wish to be photographed, please step away from the camera or notify the photographer.

MaKe a reservatIon

Permits neededspecial use of a parkAny group or organization wishing to use a park for purposes other than a picnic must apply for a Special Use Permit. The Rockford Park District will assist in providing (on a fee and availability basis) this equipment: showmobiles, bleachers, picnic tables.

garden plotsGrow your own vegetables and flowers at Lockwood Park, Churchill Park, or the Johnson Tract on Spring Brook Rd. We roto-till your plot in preparation for your planting. Requests for un-renewed spots will be taken at the Customer Service office. If we receive more requests than available plots, a lottery will be conducted for plot assignments in early April.

Metal detectorsTo search for buried treasure in the parks (or dig up spare change), you must first obtain a metal detecting permit from the Customer Service Office. In addition to the permit, you’ll receive tips on digging and replacing the hole, as well as regulations regarding the use of metal detectors in the parks.

Model airplanesTo use the Rockford Flight Field at 3215 Harrison Rd. (west of Meridian Rd.), you must be a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), pay the membership fee to join the Rock Valley R/C Flyers Club, and obtain a permit from Customer Service.

The Music Shell is an acoustic amphitheater, which can accommodate as many as 700 on benches, and up to 3,000 on the terraces and lawn. A favorite spot of many local congregations and arts organizations, the Music Shell in Sinnissippi Park hosts a wide variety of events throughout the summer season. Eleven clay horseshoe courts are located within Dahlquist Park, across the walking path from the Shelter House. Courts are open to the public, although reserved Tuesday evenings for league play and some weekends for tournament play.

Discover the fun and challenge of Frisbee® Golf! Instead of clubs, play 36 holes with a disc. No cost to play; players need to bring their own discs. Considered by players to be one of the finest disc golf courses in the Midwest. Course #1 (east) is a beautiful long course with concrete tee-pads, open fairways, and pins in tight areas close to trees and shrubs. Course #2 (west) presents its own challenges with tight wooded fairways and elevation changes.

SkateWorks is a joint project of the Harlem Community Center, City of Loves Park, Village of Machesney Park, and Rockford Park District.

Designed with beginners to advanced skaters in mind, this 17,000-square-foot skate park includes: manual pads, stairset with a handrail, hips, banks, transitions, and three ten-foot quarter-pipes.

The Washington Park Community Center skatepark offers a variety of custom built ramps as well as hands-on training for youth ages 5-18 enrolled in programs at WPCC. This skatepark is also a green initiative – an old tennis court and other recycled ramps were used as the foundation of the park.

Churchill Park skatepark2002 7th ave. | rockford

Churchill Park Skatepark was initially built in 2009 in response to neighborhood needs. The skate park grew in popularity, and in October 2012 a new bank, euro-gap, and 21-foot rail were built thanks to numerous volunteers and an ongoing collaboration between the Rockford Park District, Keith Creek Neighborhood Association, and Redeemer Lutheran Church.

The Guilford Tennis Center, a 14-court tennis facility with windscreens and lights for evening play, is ready for some outstanding tennis action each summer. sinnissippi Pickleball Courts1401 n. second st. | rockford

Two tennis courts at Sinnissippi Park were converted to six pickleball courts so that local pickleball players would have a place to play this fast-growing sport. Pickleball is a played on a badminton court with the net lowered to 34 inches at the center. It is played with a perforated plastic baseball (similar to a whiffle ball) and wood or composite paddles. It is easy for beginners to learn, but can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players.

Canine Corners Dog Parks are great places to let your dog off the leash to play, run, and socialize. These parks are open year-round from dawn to dusk, and they are fenced so that dogs are safely

contained off-leash, with brush and paths for a great field experience.

An annual or semi-annual pass (in the form of a visible dog tag) is required for all dogs using the park. You must register in person at either of the Rockford Park District Customer Service locations. Proof of current rabies vaccination is required at the time of registration; bring a copy of the rabies paperwork from your veterinarian or rabies tag.

Levings Park, Sportscore One, and Martin Park provide lakes and lagoons for fishing. Levings Lake is regularly stocked with catfish, and has wheelchair accessible parking spaces and dock.

Paddle and Trail partners with the Rockford Park District to run a Regional Activity Center (RAC) at Windsor Lake. The RAC offers water programs such as kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding. Windsor Lake is open to the public for catch-and-release fishing, along with leagues and derbies. Non-motorized boating on Windsor Lake will only be available through rental options at Paddle and Trail. In the winter, RAC is the place for Cross Country Ski and Snowshoe Rentals along with snowshoeing classes and special winter hikes.

Departing from downtown Rockford, by rail and by "sail," you’ll discover interesting tidbits about the early history of our community while enjoying a ride on the Trolley Car 36 track trolley or the Forest City Queen riverboat. Both the trolley and the riverboat are completely wheelchair accessible, however Trolley Car 36 is limited to two full size wheelchairs per ride.

The Forest City Queen gives you an up close and personal glimpse of some of the most stately homes gracing the banks of the Rock River. You will hear about Rockford’s humble beginnings on the Rock River and its continuing influence today. A variety of cruise options are available, from hourly narration tours, private rentals, family-style picnics, and Ski Broncs performances, to elegant dining. Select cruises also stop at Nicholas Conservatory and Gardens.

Historic Seth B. Atwood Park, commonly referred to as Atwood, encompasses woodland, prairie, river, and marsh habitats. It contains 334 acres of land with approximately one mile of the Kishwaukee River flowing through it. There are a variety of ecosystems, ranging from new forest growth to climax forests of oak, hickory, and walnut, from a marsh area to a large quarry,

from a restored prairie to a dry creek bed where students and campers can look for fossils.

Atwood Center serves as a visitor’s center, providing guests the opportunity to take self-guided hikes through Atwood Park, witness scheduled feeding times at the Birds of Prey exhibit, and ask questions or interact with Birds of Prey volunteers and Atwood Center staff.

Refurbished in 2012, the FREE accessible Birds of Prey exhibit is unique to the northern Illinois/southern Wisconsin area; this exhibit features up-close views of raptors. Only a few accessible tree houses exist in Illinois, and we have one of them! Atwood Center is climate-controlled and consists of a large dining area complete with a stone fireplace and beautiful views of the park, two classrooms, a nature display area, two bunk rooms, separate bathrooms and showers, and private teachers’ sleeping and bath quarters. Aldeen Park encompasses 92 acres of maple-oak woodland, prairie, and creek habitat. Since 1965 the park has been a great location for outdoor activity to include hiking trails, a baseball diamond, and a reserveable picnic shelter for family and group gatherings.

During the school-year months, the Therapeutic Recreation Department provides various programs for people with disabilities of all ages. From June to August, the Center is home to Nature Quest, a summer day camp for children ages 5-10, providing typical camp activities such as outdoor cooking, archery, hiking, games, crafts, and tie-dyeing.

The Rockford Park District’s two Sportscore Complexes are revered by athletes, respected by coaches, and recognized by professional organizations as some of the finest amateur sports facilities in the Midwest and the USA.

Sportscore Two is also home to Wedgbury Stadium, which seats 2,000 spectators, and has hosted IHSA State High School Soccer Finals, pro football games, National Rugby Finals, college rugby championships, professional soccer games with international teams, and USSL W. League Soccer Finals.

A face filled with wonder is a common sight at the Burpee Museum of Natural History. From Jane the T-Rex and Homer the Triceratops to the 5,000-square-foot traveling exhibit hall, Burpee is your window to natural history.

Burpee Museum has four floors of modern exhibits. The first floor is dedicated to paleontology; take a walk through time as you visit exhibits chronicling key times in earth’s history. The Geoscience exhibit is located on the second floor, where rocks and minerals, fluorescent minerals, and the geology of the region can be found. Third floor exhibits include the Windows to Wilderness exhibit on Rock River Valley biology, and the First People exhibit, which introduces visitors to different Native American cultures. Located in the lower level. is the Dean Olson Viewing lab, where fossil and biological specimens are prepared for exhibit. Rockford Art Museum (RAM) celebrates its centennial in 2013. Three galleries offer more than 17,000-square-feet of space for feature exhibitions and collection exhibits that change seasonally. The 1700-piece permanent collection focuses on modern and contemporary art, photography, studio glass, outsider art, and regional art. Education programs include lectures for adults, classes for children, and gallery walks for all ages. The RAM Art Annex hosts classes and workshops, a reference library, and work on view by the museum’s artist-in-residence. A Partner in Excellence of the Illinois Arts Council, RAM is supported by memberships, donations, sponsorships, and grants. Proceeds from special events and the Rockford Art Museum Store provide additional financial support.

RAM is home of the Rockford Midwestern Biennial (est. 1913), the annual Young Artist Show (est. 1941), and two-day fall favorite Greenwich Village Art Fair (est. 1948).

Rockford Dance Company (RDC) has pursued excellence in the art of dance through performance, education, and outreach for fourty years. A resident company of the Coronado Theatre, Rockford Dance Company studios and offices are located at Riverfront Museum Park. This facility, considered to be the best dance facility in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, rivals most professional studios with five state of the art studios, all with large viewing windows.

RDC annually produces The Nutcracker with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra, and an evening- length dance performance in the spring. The company also performs in a variety of small concerts throughout the year in various venues. Most of the Company members receive their dance training through the School of Rockford Dance Company and participated in the RDC Jr. Company. Trainee, apprentices, full company members, and associates commit to an extensive training program that consists of regular classes and rehearsals.

Rockford Symphony Orchestra is one of the leading cultural institutions in northern Illinois, presenting over 20 classical and pops performances annually. Maestro Steven Larsen has served as RSO Music Director since 1991. Under his direction, the Orchestra has grown artistically, expanding its repertoire and attracting musicians of the highest caliber.

The RSO season features Pops and Classics Concert Series, an outdoor Independence Day concert, and the Nutcracker Ballet presented with the Rockford Dance Company. The Pops and Classics Concert Series is performed at Coronado Theatre, and features popular jazz and Broadway artists, as well as works from the core classical repertoire and contemporary American compositions. Award winning guest artists frequently serve as soloists for RSO concerts. The RSO also offers several education programs, including the Rockford Symphony Youth Orchestra (RSYO), Youth Concerts, Pre-concert Lectures, and the SoundBites lunchtime discussion series.

Tinker Swiss Cottage offers a glimpse of a forgotten age. Rockford businessman and one-time Rockford mayor Robert Hall Tinker built this exotic Victorian home in 1865 after a whirlwind trip to Europe. Today, filled with original furnishings, artwork, and family diaries, Tinker Swiss Cottage is open as a museum, transporting its visitors back to Rockford in the 1890s. The Cottage is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Over the years, steps have been taken to return the Tinker estate to the way it once was. The Museum reconstructed the 1891 suspension bridge that once linked Mr. Tinker’s cottage with his wife’s property on the other side of Kent Creek. The unique bridge is now open for visitors to experience as part of their tour. A circular rose garden in front of the Cottage has been recreated using heritage varieties of roses and perennials. In addition, Mr. Tinker’s 1873 barn has also been reconstructed, and offers space for special events, exhibits, programs, meetings, and community events.

Visitors engage in a variety of entertaining and educational experiences at the museum including (see right column):

• Tours of a Victorian-Era village, guided by interpreters in period costumed clothing. Occurs seasonally, May though September.

• The Village is situated on 13-acres of the 148 area campus on Rockford’s east side, just minutes from I-90.

• Exploring the Main Museum Center, which highlights history stories with interactive, permanent exhibits. Includes the "Many Faces, One Community" immigrant experience gallery.

• Learning about manufacturing, recreation, travel, and even sock monkeys, which are all relevant to the greater Rockford region through these exhibits: Queen City of the Prairies; The Girls of Summer; The Missing Link: Socks, Monkeys, and Rockford’s Industrial Past; Flight Gallery; Old Dolls’ House Museum and The Millhouse.

• Attending award-winning special events such as the annual World War II Days. This event boosts more than 1,000 re-enactors showcasing authentic military equipment including vehicles and tanks.

• Midway Village is an ideal setting for meeting or wedding rentals.
