FELLOWSHIP IN THE BODY OF CHRIST

    Ephesians 6:23

Peace be to the whole community, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

What brings us together and what sets us apart from other faith traditions is the understanding of what true

fellowship is. Jesus brought the disciples together in the upper room to share in the last supper with him

before his arrest to impress upon them the need for fellowship in the community of the faithful. It is in this

experience that we are able to glimpse upon both the human and the divine at work in the scripture. Even

after all the time spent with Jesus and in listening to all of his teachings, it is here we find the disciples

present in the room still questioning who was the greatest among them. And yet, we find Jesus sharing with

the disciples a new covenant relationship reflected in the Lords Supper. Fellowship in that moment

trancends human comprehension, as we see that in celebrating this meal they became one in Christ.

Despite all their faults and failures, they would still receive Gods grace through the sacrificial offering of

Jesus life, death on the cross, and His resurrection. Jesus then reveals himself to His disciples gathered

following His resurrection. They were likely gathered in this place for the purpose of grieving and possibly

attempting to take stock of the turn of events. Just days earlier, this hopelessness they were now feeling

most likely never entered their minds as ever being possible. And yet, Jesus comes to them and reveals

himself to them so that they would know it was he. In doing so, he helps to right their world and get them

back on track to do the work in their community that he had called them to do.

The month of October is in itself an exciting time for our family as we celebrate birthdays for both Gregory

and Debra. Just as I am able to share personal joys with my family, this month also promises great

opportunites in the life of our church beginning with World Communion Sunday on October 6. A year ago, I

was still awaiting ordination and we celebrated this day with a church dinner. This year, I look forward to

leading the Service of our Lords Table on this day as we celebrate communion with the rest of the world.

The second Sunday of October brings domestic violence awareness. Silence is what feeds this problem in

our community and the world. This may be a day for awareness for us as a church, but Debra and I have

witnessed the effects of it on the lives of children who have grown up in that environment. On the third

Sunday, we celebrate the Childrens Sabbath, where in our worship we will highlight the needs of children

    here and around the world.

On October 28th I will celebrate the first anniversary of my Ordination as a minister, a very special day that we

all shared together last year. It has been a privledge and honor to serve as your pastor. I look forward to the

continued work that we are called to do together in building and growing Christs ministry at Trinity.

As the weather begins to turn cooler, the leaves begin to change, and the bountiful harvest in the fields

comes to a close, may we celebrate the special moments of October in our personal life and in the fellowship

of Christ as His church here in Jonesville. See you at church! - Pastor John

SINGING OUR FAITH IN THE 21ST CENTURY

At the First Presbyterian Church in Ferriday, LA onSeptember 14th, Dr. C. Michael Hawn, UniversityDistinguished Professor of Church Music at SouthernMethodist University, conducted a seminar on churchmusic. Where does our music come from? Whatdoes it mean? What should we sing? The seminarexamined what has happened in the last 50 years of

congregational singing and how congregationalsinging shapes our faith.

Dr. Hawn used streams of song to illustrate thedifferent kinds of music in differentdenominations. He saw congregational singing asstreams which form our faith. Streams includedmusic from the Catholic, Protestant, FolkSinging, Revival Gospel Songs, Pentecostal, and

African American. He sang and played them all.

Some favorite quotes from Dr. Hawn: Tell me whatyou sing, and I will tell you who you are. Eachgeneration should add its own stanzas. Music is

the only thing on earth that we do on the otherside. And finally, on the new hymnbook which hehad a copy of: We must cross generational lines inall of the above streams and sing ourselves into thechurch we want to become. What kind of church dowe want to be in the next 20 years? It is up to us.

Following the seminar, the ladies of the Ferridaychurch served lunch to all the participants. What awonderful, wonderful presentation!

Attending from Trinity were Catherine Jones, MarthaBrallier, and Dot Lazarus.
