03PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Welcome to the National Watercolor

Society’s 93rd International Exhibition.

Pablo Picasso has said, “Art washes

away from the soul the dust of everyday

life.” I think you will find that this extraor-

dinary exhibition of watermedia art cre-

ated by some of today’s finest artists will

fill your soul with life’s possibilities and

perhaps allow you to see the world

differently through the creators’ eyes.

A big thank you to Gerald Brommer,

Kathleen Conover, and Dean Mitchell for

an outstanding job in choosing 80 fabu-

lous paintings from almost 1000 entries as

well as selecting our 28 newest signature

members. Our Awards Juror, Roxana

Velasquez was sensitive and discerning

in choosing the awards and our traveling

exhibition. Congratulations to everyone –

those who had a painting selected, those

who won an award or were chosen to be

included in the Travel Show, and to those

who received their Signature Status this

year. A special thank you to all who en-

tered and supported NWS with their entry.

Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the donors

of the awards who help make all this pos-

sible. More than $40,000 was donated in

this most difficult economic period. We

could not enjoy this wonderful exhibi-

tion, regardless of how hard we worked,

without the faithful art material compa-

nies, magazines, societies, and individual

contributors. NWS Sponsors are listed

on our website. Check it out!

www.nationalwatercolorsociety.org

Our NWS Exhibition Director Penny Hill

is to be applauded for her dedicated lead-

ership in pulling this gigantic undertaking

into a fabulous exhibition. A special thanks

also goes to Valli McDougle for the many

hours she invested to secure our numer-

ous awards, to emago.com who produced

our wonderful catalog, to Classic Litho

who printed it, and to my entire fabulous

board who all worked so diligently on se-

lection jury day, award jury day, on hang-

ing day, and at the Annual Awards Buffet.

I am extremely proud to have been a

part of this process and to serve as your

president again. Congratulations again to

each and every artist in this exhibition.

04 JURY of SELECTION

It is a marvelous honor and privilege to

be elected by fellow National Watercolor

Society members to select the paintings

that comprise the 2013 93rd International

Exhibition. The three of us (artists with

varying approaches to painting in our own

work) were remarkably compatible in the

process of selecting 80 or so paintings

that will be honored and hung on the walls

of our gallery.

Not only did the three of us enjoy work-

ing together to select the exhibition, but

Linda Doll, Penny Hill and the society’s

staff of efficient workers were wonderfully

prepared to make our work as enjoyable

and easy as possible. We are grateful for

their professionalism and efficiency in the

preparation and presentation of nearly a

thousand images for us to consider. The fa-

cilities, equipment and workers at the NWS

headquarters on jury day, made our task as

jurors as pleasurable as possible.

We also want to thank all the artists who

submitted their work for our consideration.

We are a remarkable organization with in-

credible diversity, and it was sheer pleasure

to immerse ourselves in viewing, studying

and responding to the submitted images.

The paintings we selected are exciting in

their diversity of subject matter, variety of

approaches, imaginative treatments and

skillful presentations. The resulting exhi-

bition is a dynamic cross-section of the

superb work being done in contemporary

watermedia. We feel privileged that we

could work with the submitted entries.

We congratulate the artists who will

represent the society in the exhibition,

but we also wish to congratulate all who

submitted work for our consideration.

You made our selection day extremely

enjoyable, and for that - we thank you.

06 JUROR of AWARDS: Roxana Velásquez Martínez del Campo

It has been a tremendous

honor to serve as Juror of

Awards for this year’s 93rd

annual Exhibition of the

National Watercolor Society

in San Pedro, California.

Having lived and worked

in Mexico City, where NWS

has a strong presence as

Sociedad Mexicana de

Acuarelistas, I was particu-

lar curious to see the National Watercolor

Society’s reach here in Southern California.

The quality of the submitted works

was striking. Encompassing a wide ar-

ray of styles and genre such as figurative,

abstractions, surrealist and even hyper-

realism, the excellence of the paintings

was incredibly exciting to me as juror.

Subsequently, to determine the awardees

was quite a challenge. Thus I based my

selection on technical skills, composition,

originality, and “pushing the boundaries”....

it was not easy, but I really enjoyed it and

want to congratulate all the participants.

Reflecting on my experience with the

NWS here in California, I thank the officers

and members that tirelessly worked on

the exhibition in making this a successful

and inclusive 93rd showing. All too often

are we hastening through our busy lives

and fail to appreciate the power of art – as

unifying and transcending boundaries.

Your thoughtful selection of artwork, your

passion for the community and subject

matter is an inspiration.

Roxana Velásquez is the current Execu-

tive Director of the san diego museum

of Art (sdmA) in California. Prior to her

appointment in 2010, she served as direc-

tor of the museo nacional de san Carlos

(1990–2004), museo nacional de Arte

(2004-2006), and the museo del Palacio

de Bellas Artes (2007-2010) in Mexico

City representing professional, civic, and

cultural endeavors that elevated each

institution to international recognition.

She organized and curated remarkable

exhibitions namely Rubens and His Time

(1998), Goya (2005), From the Academy

to the Impressionism (2006), Frida Kahlo

Centennial Exhibition (2007) and René

Magritte (2010).

During the past two years, she orga-

nized many high profile exhibitions for

the san diego museum of Art specifically

From El Greco to Dali: Great Spanish

Masters, Into India: South Asian Paint-

ings from The San Diego Museum of Art,

The Invention of Glory with views of

Pastrana Tapestries, The Human Beast:

German Expressionism and most recently

Piranesi, Rome and the Arts of Design.

Roxana Velásquez is the recipient of

numerous awards including “best art

publication” for Guía del Museo Nacional

de San Carlos from the Mexican govern-

ment, and “best exhibition” for Master-

works from the San Carlos Museum from

the Georgia Association of Museums.

Her passion and commitment for the

arts is long standing. At the young age of

14, she visited the museo del Palacio de

Bellas Artes in Mexico City which became

pivotal in her pursuit of a career in the

arts. Roxana is convinced of the transfor-

mative impact of art on our society—the

way art spans bridges among people from

different backgrounds and origins thus

allowing them to discover commonalities

rather than differences. Devoted to the

arts as a power in unifying and transcend-

ing boundaries, Ms. Velasquez is dedi-

cated to promoting and exhibiting artistic

heritage in ways to engage visitors as well

as the community at large for all to take

pride in a shared heritage.

Velásquez currently lives in San Diego,

California with her husband, filmmaker

Héctor Tajonar, and their 10-year-old son,

Alejandro.

THE NWS TRAVELING EXHIBITION

Since 1925, The National Watercolor Society

has chosen a select group of paintings to

travel the U.S. as ambassadors of the NWS

and the fine artists within its membership.

Reaching fine art venues across the country,

the NWS Traveling Exhibition exposes the

NWS and its members to thousands of ad-

ditional patrons. Over the years, the traveling

exhibition has included works by such Ameri-

can masters as Edward Hopper and Andrew

Wyeth, as well as contemporary masters too

many to name.

Approximately 30 paintings from the annual

show are juried into the travel exhibition and

spend the next year being displayed in ven-

ues representing some of the finest galleries

in the country. Recent venues have included

The Community Fine Arts Center in Rock

Springs, WY; Bloomington Art Center in

Bloomington, MN; Kerr Arts and Cultural

Center in Kerrville, TX, and the Cultural

Center of Cape Cod in South Yarmouth, MA.

Congratulations to all the artists juried into

38 NATIONAL WATERCOLOR SOCIETY: Past, Present, and Future

With an exciting vision and a new apprecia-tion for an old art form, the California Water Color Society was founded in 1920. As the country grew, painters found inspiration in the expansive western lands and were, in their way, pioneers of a new spirit.

The name of the society has changed twice since that time: first in 1967, to California Na-tional Watercolor Society; then in 1975, when the members voted to become simply the National Watercolor Society. The first exhibition was held at the Los Angeles Museum of His-tory, Science and Art, which later became the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The first twenty-five annual exhibitions were held there. From 1946 through the early 1960s, exhibitions were often at the Pasadena Art Museum but also in Santa Barbara, San Diego, and the San Francisco area. From the late 1960s through the 1970s, Laguna Beach Museum of Art was most often the host gallery, in addition to the Otis Art Institute and the Palm Springs Desert Museum. Throughout the 1980s until 2010, the annual shows were held at the Brea Civic Cul-tural Center, the Muckenthaler Cultural Center in Fullerton and the Riverside Art Museum.

Throughout the 1950s, a biennial drawing and print show was also presented. Most years there is a show only for Signature Members. In 1956, the Exhibit of California and Canadian Watercolours was held in both countries. In 1960, Mexico City hosted La Sociedad de Acuarelistes de California. The past presidents were honored in 1976 and 1987 with shows at the Brand Library Art Center. To broaden the collections of watercolors accessible to the public, the Society donated twenty-five paint-ings spanning the early years (1925–1954) to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The selections from 1955 to 1980 were on loan to the Laguna Beach Museum of Art until 1989.

Although NWS is obviously an exhibiting society, it is also an educating society. The images of its annual exhibitions are available for purchase on digital media as well as full color catalogs. Its traveling exhibitions visit collegiate and public galleries and museums throughout the United States and Canada. Special written materials are often prepared for these institutions. In conjunction with the

annual exhibitions, lectures and orientation programs are made available to docents of the host museums. As an additional service to the public, an Associates membership category was implemented. People who are interested in watercolor, or art in general, may become Associates and attend openings, shows, and Society events. They receive all the NWS publications and may submit work for the juried shows for the same fees as Signature Mem-bers. This membership provides an opportunity for involved patronage by those who wish to appreciate, encourage, and support the efforts of the society.

In recent years, in an effort to reach mem-bers throughout the country, regional rep-resentatives have been organized to stay in touch with board activities in California. It is a way to plan shows in different areas and to find new locations for travel shows, which are selected from annual exhibitions. Regional invitational shows have been held in Colorado and Arizona.

The Society also exhibited watercolors from its permanent collection featuring award-winning works from the 1955 to 1985 Annual Exhibitions. This show was held in January 1993 at the County of Los Angeles Century Gal-lery in Sylmar, California.

In 1995, all available NWS archival material including slides of our show, catalogs and re-cords were sorted, classified and delivered on August 30, 1995 to the Smithsonian Institution Branch Office located in the Huntington Library, San Marino, California. This material has now been accepted under a “Deed of Gift” and has become an official part of the Smithsonian Ar-chives of American Art. When processed, this material will be accessible to everyone through the information highway.

In 1999, the National Watercolor Society found and purchased a building at 915 South Pacific Avenue, San Pedro, California, 90731-3201. This has become the Society’s center for offices, gallery, workshops and a place to house our growing permanent collection. The All-Member Exhibition was held in this building in 2009 and in 2010 the Annual Exhibition was presented in this newly renovated gallery.
