Category A and E - By attending the Pesticide Recertication workshop at the Northern Green Expo on

Friday, January 11, you are completing the recertication requirements in Categories A - Core and E - Turf

and Ornamentals. This workshop has been approved by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA).

Licensed applicators with Categories A and E who last attended a recertication workshop in 2011, and new-

licensed pesticide applicators in 2012, must attend an MDA-approved workshop in 2013. By attending the

Pesticide Recertication track and completing the on-site attendance documentation, applicators will obtain

recertication credit.

The morning and afternoon start with general sessions that are required for all recertifying applicators. There

are also breakout sessions where participants can choose sessions of interest. Applicators must attend the

entire Pesticide Recertication track (7 general sessions plus 1 break-out session) to obtain MDA

recertication credit. Attendance will be monitored. The MDA reserves the right to deny recertication credit

to participants who arrive later than 30 minutes after the start of the program or who are absent during

substantial portions of the program. Workshop participants should bring license identication cards to the

workshop.

Category F (Aquatics) - The Northern Green Expo is again o5ering a Category F session at the 2013 Northern

Green Expo on Thursday, January 10 from 2:00pm – 3:50pm. In order for licensed applicators to get credit for

Category F - Aquatics, they must attend both Thursday afternoon Aquatics Pesticide Recertication and the

Friday Pesticide Recertication.

ATTENTION: Everyone seeking Pesticide Recertication must report to the MDA General Session by 7:30 a.m. All sessions are also open to attendees who are not seeking Pesticide Recertication, as space allows.

7 Things Contractors Always Ask

Me Charles Vander Kooi

With over 40 years in the industry and over 30 as a professional speaker and consultant, Vander Kooi has put together the seven most asked questions that contractors pull him aside for.

8:20 AM - 9:20 AM | 205

Adrian Bloom's Best Perennials

and Grasses and How to Use

Them to Create Drama in the

Year Round Garden Adrian Bloom

Adrian Bloom has been using perennials in innovative ways in gardens he has designed on both sides of the Atlantic, and will suggest the best choices to create exciting combinations for the year round garden. He has recently been designing and planting rivers of plants to dramatic eEect in both large and small gardens. Believing that there are far too many untried and largely untested new plants, he suggests that choosing fewer but better plants will lead to greater success. This is largely the message in his new book, Blooms Best Perennials and Grasses which also points out how knowing the origins of plants can help you make the right decisions for your garden. Bloom also believes perennials and grasses are underused as part of the mix with shrubs and conifers in many of our gardens, and will explain how they can be used to create more impact in the garden.

8:20 AM - 9:20 AM | 211CD

Business Succession Planning Troy Lucht

Most green industry companies are family-owned. Successfully planning for the sale or transition of your business is a challenge nearly all owners face. Lucht will discuss strategies and techniques that families can use when dealing with business succession planning.

8:20 AM - 9:20 AM | 102ABC

Diagnosing Tree Health Issues Skip Kincaid

Landscape professionals are tasked with making a client's property look great. When trees decline there is often confusion about what's going wrong. Kincaid will identify tools to assist with diagnosing tree problems and provide remedies for dealing with these issues.

8:20 AM - 9:20 AM | 208CD

Low Volume Irrigation Design Craig Otto

This session will outline the best application of the wide range of drip components focusing on two main categories: point source and total coverage. We will also discuss accessories to consider including drip systems.

Systems for Transplant Success

in the Nursery Rock Kelly

Come see a demonstration of liner types including bareroot, gravel culture, gro-bags and air prune pots when transplanting challenging species in nursery Feld and container production. This presentation will describe a variety of systems and results observed in 2012 trials. The results of these trials suggest that there is opportunity to improve transplanting success and tree growth with challenging species and varieties.

8:20 AM - 9:20 AM | 102DEF

Turfgrass Research Update Eric Watkins, Sam Bauer

The turfgrass research group will update you on the latest research being conducted at the Turfgrass Research, Outreach, and Education (TROE) Center and in Feld settings throughout the state. Topics will include: low-input turfgrass species, breeding for winter hardy perennial ryegrass, Fne fescue cultivar evaluations for golf course fairways, roadside salt-tolerant turf research, home lawn conversion to low input species, use of glyphosate in a weed management program, and National Turfgrass Evaluation Program trials. We will also give overviews of several new projects that have recently been funded. In addition, we will discuss the social media tools that we are using to relay turfgrass science information, including options that could be used by professional turfgrass managers.

9:30 AM - 10:25 AM | Ballroom A

Keynote: The Importance of

Sustainability Don Shelby

Don Shelby has become one of the region’s most outspoken advocates for the adoption of environmentally sustainable practices, including plants, landscapes, turf and grounds. As the former long-time anchor of WCCO-TV news, his high proFle has helped to increase local awareness of sustainability issues. During his opening keynote at the Northern Green Expo, Shelby will share why he’s become such a proponent for personal and corporate action; and, furthermore, why green industry professionals are uniquely positioned to make a positive diEerence for the environment as well as the understanding among the populace about what can be done to act in an environmentally sustainable fashion.

Conifers that Grow on You: How

to Make the Most of Conifers in

the Landscape and Garden Adrian Bloom

Conifers can be the mainstay of the year round garden, but which conifers to use and how to best use them? If, when and how should they be pruned and maintained? And how can they be used to best eEect with other plants, shrubs, perennials and grasses? Bloom will attempt to answer some of those questions from the long experience he has had in developing his own garden, Foggy Bottom at Bressingham in England. He has also travelled widely in the U.S. and other countries over many years putting together some of that knowledge in his highly acclaimed book Gardening with Conifers.

Is it Time to Rethink Tall Fescues

for Sports Turf? Eric Watkins

Tall fescue has traditionally been thought of as an undesirable species in the Upper Midwest. Fortunately, decades of plant breeding eEorts have resulted in turf-type cultivars that can perform very well in the northern United States. Recently, there has been an increase in tall fescue use as a turf in Minnesota and surrounding states, primarily for lawns. Due to their excellent tolerance of wear and traKc, exceptional performance during drought, and good turfgrass quality, these new cultivars could present opportunities for sports turf managers. However, there are a number of management challenges that a turf manager would encounter when utilizing this species in cold climates. Watkins will discuss ongoing research projects, cultivar evaluation results, and germplasm improvement eEorts from the University of Minnesota and other turfgrass research programs.

Enhancing Turf Performance

with Soil Amendments Rob Golembiewski

Minimizing turf irrigation needs has been a long sought after goal for turfgrass managers. It is more evident today than ever before that the goal of saving water is a necessity. Along with the innovations in new drought tolerant turf species, soil amendments continue to improve and show potential for water management and enhanced turf quality. Soil amendments can be deFned as any additive placed directly into the soil proFle which can create a better growing environment for the turf by modifying the soil. This presentation will focus on types of soil amendments available, their characteristics, uses, and research evaluating their potential in divot mixes and fairway incorporation trials.

Safety in Transporting Pesticides Fred Whitford

The consequences of a trailer becoming unhitched from a truck on the highway is something we would rather not think about, but must at all times understand that people are killed or injured each day from these types of accidents. Pesticides and application equipment carried on a "run-away" trailer only leads to serious environmental concerns. This is why understanding how to properly attach a trailer to a truck is such an important topic. 1:50 PM - 2:30 PM | 205

Developing a Culture of Safety Mark Gondreau

All occupations within the green industry provide multiple threats for their workers to be hurt. Doing one's job safely must be a priority. This discussion will provide ideas on how and why any organization can and should possess a safety mindset that translates into a culture of safety.

2:35 PM - 3:35 PM | 205

Mixing and Measuring

Pesticides: Dry and Liquid Fred Whitford

The often used adage, “read and follow label instructions” has new meaning. While often looking at the BIG picture in spray technology, we now realize that the subtleties of measuring the product or carrier is often neglected and may be the diEerence

between application success and failure. A long used measuring cup, trusting marks on tanks, ignorance in dry/liquid ounces, and using incorrect volumetric measuring devices in-part-or-a-whole potentially lessens control of the targeted pest. The purpose of this talk is to urge you to investigate, and correct if necessary, this often overlooked Frst step in the pesticide application process.
