  • =Its not that hard to work out how the rondo maxIframe system can

save you tIme and money. With the Rondo MAXIframe External Wall Framing

System, you can achieve increased performance capacity

    while using less product.

Its a simple, cost-effective system thats quick and easy

to install and consists of two major profiles, MAXIjamb

and MAXItrack. Together with three complementary

cleats, they provide a simple, solid structure that not

only outperforms typical boxed stud configuration, but

also reduces the required number of noggings, saving

    both time and money.

The jamb stud, MAXIjamb, can be used both as a

vertical jamb member to openings, or as a horizontal

head or sill member in window openings.

This reduces the necessity for multiple stud configura-

tions, such as boxed or back to back.

The MAXIframe system also integrates Rondos

MAXItrack, a slotted deflection head track which

offers increased capacity at the head connection,

allowing studs to be screw-fixed to the track, reducing

the need for stud realignment after other trades have

put through their services, and eliminating the need to

install an additional nogging directly below the head

track providing both labour and material cost savings.

Visit our website to visually experience a typical

MAXIframe installation, or talk to your local Rondo

    representative to find out more.

Dulux AcraTex is a division of DuluxGroup (Australia) Pty Ltd. ABN 67 000 049 427. Dulux, AcraTex and AcraShield are registered trade marks and AcraPrime and Coventry are trade marks.

When specifying a new project, insist on FLEXIBLE ACRYLIC TEXTURE, not just painted cement render.

The AcraTex 3 step system encapsulates the walls in a membrane envelope acting as a barrier against adverse weather conditions for years longer than cement render.

Available across the full Dulux Exterior colour range.

The AcraTex System with its flexible Acrylic Texture coating guards against degradation. Ordinary cement render is hard and brittle leading to typical problems like these.

CRACkIng Cement shrinks as it hardens & expands/contracts with temperature change.

EFFLoREsCEnCE Salt blooming over the surface & concentrated leaching at cracks occurs.

sTAInIng Inferior paint systems hold dirt and allow moisture ingress.

Excellence in the building and construction industry is recognised by Master Builders with a series of awards presented during the year. These awards give builders, subcontractors and apprentices the opportunity to showcase their workmanship to industry colleagues and prospective clients. Winners may advance to our national awards for further recognition.

Master Builders - Bankwest Excellence in Construction AwardsSince 1989, the Master Builders Excellence in Construction Awards have been recognised as the hallmark event for the commercial, industrial and civil engineering sectors. Entries are received in categories such as new construction, renovation and refurbishment, building fitouts, multi-residential buildings and civil engineering structures, and are judged by an independent panel comprising representatives from Master Builders, Royal Australian Institute of Architects and Engineers Australia. The 2013 Master Builders-Bankwest Excellence in Construction Awards will be held at Perth Convention Exhibition Centre on Saturday 22 June. Entries opened in February 2013.

Master Builders Housing Excellence AwardsThe Master Builders Housing Excellence Awards were originally introduced in Western Australia in 1981. The Awards recognise the best builders based exclusively on their building excellence and quality of workmanship. A team of experienced building judges inspect nominations in new construction, display homes, renovations, single detached and group housing projects. The 2013 Master Builders Housing Excellence Awards were held at Perth Convention Exhibition Centre on Saturday 23 February. Judging for the 2013 Awards took place in November 2012. Entries for the 2014 event will open in July 2013.

The Awards are normally held in November of each year, with entries open around July/August.

Training The Master Builders Association of Western Australia is a Registered Training Organisation with the Training Accreditation Council of Western Australia. We offer a wide range of both nationally accredited and non accredited skills based courses. The range of courses are offered from the Training Centre located in Jolimont as well as from most regional towns throughout Western Australia.

Master Builders is committed to providing high quality training services that meet the needs of members, the building and construction industry and those interested in careers in building and construction. The courses range from entry level up to Diploma level qualifications.

Training is an efficient and cost effective way to develop yourself or your staff and to increase productivity. Master Builders has a bulk billing agreement with the Construction Training Fund which allows us to offer most courses to eligible participants at a reduced rate and we then claim the subsidy from the Construction Training Fund. This greatly assists the small businesses.

Our trainers all have extensive industry experience and we aim to exceed industry requirements. Training is offered at our Jolimont Training Centre or at our newly established and fully equipped facilities in Geraldton, Albany and Bunbury. We also make use of hire training facilities in other regional towns. We offer training customised to businesses requirements at a venue of their choice. The White Card can also be completed on line and we ensure standards are met by conducting a follow up audit on all on line completions. This gives

employers the satisfaction that standards have been met and that their staff competency has been verified by a qualified trainer and assessor.

The training covers a range of courses including safety, construction skills, business, contracts and administration, project management, design and drafting, energy efficiency, technical as well as others. Each 6 months we publish a training calendar of courses on offer. This is sent to each member and may be requested from our office via [email protected] or viewed on our web page at www.mbawa.com

It was in these years that Brad got to work on a range of large projects ranging from multi level sky scrapers to cinema complexs and the commissioning of the Australian Embassy in Jakarta; in the later years he had a short spell in Broome working on a wide range of equipment and later even completed some minesite maintenance on a couple of gold mines.

Stinson Air started off as subcontractors to the big boys learning along the way and improving where they could, before they knew it the subcontracting stopped as they strained to keep up with their own contracts. Travel forward from 1995 until today and business is booming, Stinson Air have sold, installed and maintained thousands of air conditioners to homes and commercial sites around the metro area. They have even completed contracts as far away as Broome, The Pilbara, Kalgoorlie and Yallingup. Projects include multi million dollar deals such as a Daikin promotion with Western Australias most awarded home builder, a massive contract to install air conditioning for a new homes project for Rio Tinto housing in Karratha and many large commercial and residential multi unit developments. As well as taking on the larger projects Stinson Air are still just as at home installing a single wall mounted split system in a small bedroom.

The Stinson Air construction division has built detailed construction supervision schedules and we now work with many of WAs leading builders, designers and architects on a vast range of projects throughout the greater metropolitan area.

What you really need to know about Coating Systems for Cement Render

At Dulux AcraTex weve been designing specialist finishing systems for new construction for over 3 decades and working with Building Partners to deliver total peace of mind with fit for purpose coatings specifications.

Traditional masonry construction has stood the test of time supported by dedicated trades however, increasingly the need for Efficiency and Fast Track projects push Designers and Builders to challenge finishing processes to deliver projects on time and on budget particularly in Residential construction.

Inherently cement render forms a strong but rigid matrix requiring specific attention to maintain durability and aesthetics. Through the 1970s the evolution of what we now term Acrylic Textures occurred to meet the demands of rigid sand and cement where low build paints failed. Fast forward to today and the lessons of the past are repeating where paint systems are inappropriately specified.

Quality Builders specify flexible acrylic textureArchitectural trends today see more Coloured Render facades and Acrylic Texture options now include flexible trowel applied coatings that deliver proven performance with the traditional look of rendered surfaces. Its critical in specifying such finishes to understand the performance the industry has come to rely on is delivered through Flexible Acrylic Texture and not to generalise with specification clauses such as Rendered Facade or Coloured Render allowing low build painted render systems to be substituted.

What Experience tells us1. Cement Render is hard and brittle and forms cracks over time due to both cement shrinkage and expansion & contraction. Pre-bagged cement renders, some termed Acrylic or Polymer Renders, are often specified with the expectation that they are flexible however typically the polymer content is too low to significantly change the properties of the cement binder.

    2. Cement Render is suitable as a base levelling layer over stable porous masonry prior to subsequent high build Acrylic Texture and Elastomeric coating systems. Low build (paint) systems over new cement render are prone to cracking and are not recommended by Dulux.

    3. Fresh Cement Render is highly alkaline and subsequent Efflorescence must be controlled. AS2311, guide to Painting of Buildings defines a min. 28 day wait time before coating which is often impractical. Dulux AcraTex green Render Sealer allows painting over cement render after only two days (subject to drying) and chemically restricts efflorescence staining.

    4. Where weatherproofing Topcoats are installed over Flexible Acrylic Texture, scheduling and colour consistency across the project is simplified and system durability is extended. Upper and lower storey work is sometimes staged weeks or months apart leading to colour inconsistencies of un-top coated texture.

everyone in the construction industry needs a lawyer sometimesConstruction contracts are complex and everyone in the construction industry will need help at some stage managing the risks, implementing appropriate action and resolving disputes.

Construction companies have to make decisions quickly and get them right. Where do they go when they need legal or commercial advice in order to make good decisions and take decisive action? Until now there have been two broad choices: either you go to a large firm of solicitors with a construction law specialist department or you employ a full-time lawyer in-house. Now Contract Intelligence gives you another option.

Contract Intelligence is a multidisciplinary law and commercial consultancy specialising in the construction industry. Operating through a virtual office with mobile consultants, we come to you. Your documents stay with your project team and your project team stays in your office and on the job.

Our contracts experts work alongside your staff to provide them with the support that they need to do their job to the best of their ability. We give advice on tender submissions, contract negotiations, claims preparation, and disputes in their earliest stages. We are your in-house contractual specialist but we work on demand and you pay only for the time and service that you use.

If you need a lawyer, then our legal team will be there to provide expert advice and to represent you in all forms of dispute resolution. Again, our legal team comes to your office and works directly with your people to implement the most cost-effective strategies. We are specialists in construction law and we understand your industry.

  • Kulin Group is a Specialist Contracting Company that was formed in 1988 to service the Construction, Mining, Resources & Marine Industries in Western Australia.

Kulin Group has since evolved into a Company that provides innovative and cost effective remedial engineering solutions across the specialist contracting eld as well as the supply and installation of the quality AFS Logicwall system to the construction industry in both Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Kulin Group has steadily expanded to be regarded as one of the most respected Specialist Contractors in Australia. We have established an excellent safety record as well as implementing quality systems to meet Australian Standards.

The evolution of Kulin Group has also allowed us to form a synergy between the various specialist contracting services we provide and the structural wall installation works associated with new construction.

Kulin Groups Core Services are:Structural Concrete RepairThe durability and integrity of concrete can be compromised for a variety of reasons and this may have a detrimental effect on its structural capabilities. Dependant upon service conditions and environmental exposure concrete cancer and spalling due to reinforcement bar corrosion may be active. This may result in the necessity to carry out repair to concrete elements to reinstate its structural integrity.

AFS Logicwall SystemThe AFS Logicwall system consists of a lightweight bonded wall panel that is erected on site by our trained installers. Once braced into position, reinforcement steel is installed into the hollow panel along with any necessary electrical and plumbing services. The wall panel is then core- lled with concrete for structural integrity.

Cathodic ProtectionOngoing corrosion of steel reinforcement and ancillary equipment can result in the deterioration of a concrete structure through concrete cancer and spalling. Due to limited accessibility, service environment or ongoing environmental exposure (or a combination of all of these) it may not be possible to undertake conventional protective coating or concrete repair works on a regular basis.

Waterproof Membrane SystemsDamage by water and moisture ingress over time can have a severely detrimental effect on the integrity, performance and ongoing service life of a wide variety of structures. Given that the deterioration may occur in differing environments and conditions there is a selection of waterproo ng systems and moisture tolerant products available to ensure all performance criteria are met.

Precision GroutingGiven the considerable capital expenditure that industry spends throughout Australia on equipment and machinery, it is critical that the installation of each component is completed to the highest possible standard.

Protective CoatingsDepending on the environment to which concrete and steel are subjected to during service, their deterioration can have a detrimental effect on both structural integrity and environmental compliance.

Epoxy Crack InjectionThe cracking of concrete can not only have an immediate impact upon the load bearing capabilities, and therefore the performance of the structure, but prolonged exposure to the service environment and elements can also cause deterioration of the concrete matrix and corrosion activity in the reinforcement steel that may result in concrete cancer and spalling.

Abrasive Blasting & CoatingGiven Kulin Groups prominent history in providing specialist contracting services for the construction, mining, resources and marine industries they have experience in undertaking abrasive blasting and industrial coating works on a wide variety of structures in diverse locations throughout Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

BlueScope Steel develops longer-lasting ZIncAluMe steel BlueScope Steel is preparing to roll-out a third generation of its iconic ZINCALUME steel. It features a patented new coating that has a smaller environmental impact* and increases its durability.

    BuIldInG SuPPlIeS

Next generation ZINCALUME steel featuring Activate technology will enter production in the second quarter of 2013, bringing to fruition almost 20 years of efforts by BlueScope Steel to develop a longer-lasting metallic-coated building product. BlueScope Steel Market Manager - Commercial and Industrial -, Manu Siitonen, said BlueScope Steel has invested over $100 million in perfecting a better ZINCALUME steel product. He said the breakthrough metal coating formulation of next generation ZINCALUME steel improves the already high corrosion performance of the current product.

ZINCALUME steel is renowned in Australian building and architectural circles for the galvanic action of the zinc in its coating, which gives it a self-sealing property and increases its lifespan, said Mr Siitonen.

With next generation ZINCALUME steel, we have perfected a new formula that improves the galvanic action of the zinc. With the addition of a new magnesium compound, it activates the aluminium in the coating composition to provide even more effective corrosion resistance. The result is a product that is more resilient when drilled, cut or scratched. Ultimately, the chemistry of next generation ZINCALUME steel metal coating formulation makes it stronger in harsh construction environments and opens up the possibility of new applications for builders and specifiers.

The improved coating also enables a more efficient use of natural resources through the reduced use of zinc and aluminium, lessening next generation ZINCALUME steels environmental impact.

Next generation ZINCALUME steel metal coating formulation has undergone 10 years of accelerated laboratory testing and 17 years of environmental field testing to ensure it exceeds the durability of the current ZINCALUME steel product.

The corrosion resistance of the new coating technology has been proven by testing more than 5000 panels in a wide variety of laboratory and real world climatic conditions. Product durability team leader Tahnee Lowe has been monitoring the progress of next generation ZINCALUME steel for the past six years.

Our heavy emphasis on real-world field testing of new products contrasts with other manufacturers who predominantly assess small test panels using accelerated weathering techniques to fast-track durability results. Several decades of product testing experience has taught BlueScope Steel that accelerated testing is useful in initial phases of development, but is no substitute for the assurance that comes from many years of field testing, said Ms Lowe.

As a result of our comprehensive testing process, we are confident that next generation ZINCALUME steel will be more durable, provide a reduced environmental impact* and maintain its renowned aesthetic appearance.

In 1990 BlueScope Steel began laboratory experiments with new formulations that have eventually led to the next generation of ZINCALUME steel.

The first full scale production trial was conducted in 1995 and samples from this era remain on exposure at outdoor test sites.

When we assessed the panels 10 years later, relative to dozens of other experimental formulations, we realised our initial theories were confirmed, Ms Lowe said.

When we compared the corrosion performance of next generation ZINCALUME steel with the current product, we found the biggest improvement in the most severe environments such as surfaces which are unwashed by rainfall and also subject to air pollution.

The superior corrosion resistance of next generation ZINCALUME steel was confirmed via independent testing conducted by the internationally recognised French Corrosion Institute. Manu Siitonen says the new product is a response to emerging building requirements necessitating advances in areas such as material efficiency, durability and sustainability.

To adequately address changes in the building industry such as site and location variations, as well as changes to regulations, it is imperative that todays building products are constantly improving in line with evolving industry standards.

Essentially, next generation ZINCALUME steel is a better product that caters for current and future advances in the building industry.

It will have a real impact on the market when it is released in mid-2013, he said. Since its launch in 1976, ZINCALUME steel has been a standard-setter amongst steel roofing, cladding and construction products. In 1994, second generation ZINCALUME steel was launched, featuring the addition of a resin coating that improved mark resistance, and made the steel easier to handle and roll-form.

*Compared to original ZINCALUME steel (AZ150 coating) in all LCA environmental impact categories when used in Commercial & Industrial roofing applications. This improvement is the result of innovation in the metal coating formulation that delivers an increased lifespan while using fewer metal resources.

BlueScope Steel manufacturing and product leader, Jason Hodges (left) and market manager, Manu Siitonen, at Port Kemblas Spring Hill Metal Coating Lines, where longer-lasting next generation ZINCALUME steel is produced.

BlueScope Steel product durability team leader Tahnee Lowe has been monitoring next generation ZINCALUME steel in real-world conditions for six years and said its patented new coating has increased durability and a smaller environmental impact compared with current ZINCALUME steel.
