oping competent athletic teams, and sharing the gospel message with the sport culture. The athletics program is an integral part of the educational mission of Grace College. Competition in athletics makes a significant contribution in the development of the total person and can be used effectively as part of the training program that prepares a person for service and leadership.

The Department of athletics endorses and supports the grace college “mission statement” which states “grace college is an evangelical christian community of higher education which applies Biblical values in strengthening character, sharpening competence, and preparing for service.”

2013 preview: women’s soccer plans to eclipse record-breaking 2012 season

The women’s soccer team at grace College just finished its finest season ever last fall, but the Lady Lancers have their sights set even higher in 2013. grace, led by seventh-year head coach Michael Voss, finished a program-best 17-5-3 a year ago. Voss is confident the Lady Lancers are ready for the next step this fall. “we are proud about our past, but our goal is to improve our football – to play faster, be more technical, fit and powerful. we want to take what we’re doing and do it with more intensity,” Voss said. “we’ve done well in the past, but we have to take possession-attack-ing football to a different level. I’m su-per excited about the team working to-gether. They are definitely coming into camp ready to go there.” while grace placed a program-best third at last year’s nccaa national championships, the squad is hoping to earn its first berth into the NAIA tour-nament this fall. To help reach that goal, Voss has put together a daunting nonleague schedule to prepare the Lady Lancers for elite competition. overall grace will play four teams that qualified for the 2012 naIa national championships, including the national runner-up olivet nazarene. addition-ally, grace will welcome back the women’s national Team of Haiti to miller Field for an exhibition match on aug. 24. “This is the toughest sched-ule we’ve ever had. It’s the natural progression for where we need to go,” Voss continued. “Playing nationally competitive teams will give the raters what they need to see. Last year we were 2-2 against ranked teams, and playing tougher teams will push us. Hopefully the preseason will prepare us to be strong in the crossroads League

and to become a national contender. That’s the next step.” The Lady Lancers feature an impres-sive arsenal of returners. sophomores mallory rondeau (17 goals) and cari-anne sobey (17 assists) found great suc-cess on the pitch in their first collegiate seasons. They will be bolstered in at-tack by junior Holly Bennett (8 goals, 6 assists) and incoming freshman mer-edith Hollar among several others. Hol-lar, a warsaw community High school standout, graduated as the Tigers’ all-time leading goal scorer with 67 goals in three seasons. grace’s depth and talent on the of-fensive side of the ball will be readily apparent, according to Voss. The bigger question centers on stability. “The hope we have this year is to be more consistent. we want to play solid football every game for the full 90 minutes,” Voss said. “we have incredibly competent players from top to bottom. Getting them to fire on all cylinders at the same time is our goal this year. we need to have one unit completely uni-fied each game, regardless of the system

or team we are playing.” carmen Barnhill returns as grace’s senior goalkeeper to anchor the team’s defense. sophomore Heather martin and senior Jalisa Thayer were mainstays in a Lady Lancer defense last year that recorded 11 team shutouts. sophomore Darcy Johnston made the move to the center of defense last spring and will be a stronghold this year. The Lady Lancers will kick off their season on the west coast with a pair of road matches on Aug. 15th and 17th against The master’s college and west-mont college. “I’m completely pumped about this team. They are by far the most accom-plished, technically sound team we’ve ever had. The team plays with more unity every day they are together,” Voss said. “above all, we want people to see god active in our lives. our purpose for playing is to live out our faith on the field so people can know God by the way we play. we want to be ballers and be unified as one group to demonstrate our faith and who it is that stands be-hind our faith.”

Head coach michael Voss enters his seventh season at grace as the program’s all-time winningest coach. since accepting the job in 2007, Voss has aggressively recruited women who not only compete at a high level on the field, but who also have a passion for bringing glory to god.

Voss’s trademarked soccer style of “possession-attacking futbol” has resulted in three trips in four years to the nccaa national championships in Kissimmee, Fla.

Voss already holds the top three single-season marks in grace’s program history, lead-ing the Lady Lancers to a 14-6-3 record in 2009, 14-7-3 record in 2011 and a pro-gram-best 17-5-3 mark last fall. Voss’s successful recruiting was on display in 2012 as a pair of Lady Lancer freshman (mallory rondeau, carianne sobey) earned First Team nccaa all-american honors. The Voss-led Lady Lancers upset two teams ranked in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches’ Poll during the 2012 campaign.

additionally, the Lady Lancers under Voss have consistently been graded as one of the smartest teams in the nation. over the past three years, grace’s team gPa has never

been lower than 3.60. The Lady Lancers’ team GPA ranked first across all NAIA women’s soccer programs in both 2011-12 and 2012-13, and the team was second in the naIa in 2010-11. Individually, the Lady Lancers have produced 20 naIa scholar-Athletes and five CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-Americans since 2011.

Voss’s desire to disciple the women of grace’s soccer team is clearly seen in his organizing missions trips for the Lady Lancers. In the spring of 2012, Voss led his team to the cayman Islands where they shared the gospel through the sport of soccer.

In march 2012, Voss was named an assistant coach for the women’s national Team of Haiti. His three-year commitment in-cludes identification, training and development of Haiti’s Women’s National Team, U-20, U-17 and U-14 WNT. Voss will con-tinue in his role as grace’s full-time head coach in addition to assisting Haiti’s wnT.

Prior to coming to grace, Voss and his family worked as missionaries to the southern jungle of Belize, central america. He coached the Toledo united Professional Futbol Club, fighting for a CONCACAF Champions Cup bid.

Voss also worked at the calvary chapel christian schools in murrieta, calif.; from 1996-2005 he was the athletic director, the director of soccer and the head girls’ soccer coach. Voss started the soccer program and compiled a record of 102-51-17.

Voss, who has earned six coach of the Year honors, attended santa clara (calif.) univer-sity from 1991-93 and was a member of the soccer team that finished 20-1-2 and was ncaa Div. I national Finalist in 1991. He would complete his undergraduate work at Point Loma nazarene (calif.) university in 1996 studying religion with an emphasis in Biblical studies and greek.

He is licensed with a ussF “c” and an nscaa “advanced national Diploma.” He is also a “Certified Athletic Administrator” from the National Interscholastic Athletic Adminis-trators association.

michael and his wife summer live in winona Lake, Ind., with their three boys, Justus, cole, Landan, and their daughter, Kaina.

assistant coach jon hoover

Jon Hoover, in his sixth year with the Lady Lancers, was promoted to the lead assistant of the women’s soccer team in 2009. Hoover graduated from grace in 2001 with a degree in physical edu-cation and health. He then went on to complete his master’s degree in 2011 from Ball state univer-sity with a major in physical education and coaching. He is currently employed at edgewood middle school, where he teaches physical education and health.

as a student-athlete, Hoover was heavily involved in athletics at grace. He played goalkeeper for the Lancers from 1997-2000, where he was a three-time captain, three-time all-conference per-former, and an NCCAA All-American. He also participated in track and field at Grace, where at one point he held records in the indoor 55m, high jump, outdoor 4x100 relay and javelin.

after graduating from grace, Hoover joined the coaching staff on the men’s soccer team. He would remain on staff with the men’s team for five years before taking a coaching position at Lakeland Christian Academy. Hoover spend two years leading the junior varsity program before taking the varsity position in 2008.

Hoover has earned his ussF “c” license. Jon and his wife, emily, live with their son, alex, in winona Lake, Ind.

assistant coach aubrey alcorn

Aubrey Alcorn joins the Lady Lancers’ coaching staff for her fifth season. She graduated from Grace college in 2008 after an outstanding playing career as a Lady Lancer.

alcorn was a four-year player for the Lady Lancers’ soccer team and brings a desire to see the women reach their potential both spiritually and athletically.

During her career, she has helped lead the Lady Lancers to two appearances in the nccaa na-tional championships, which had previously not been done in a decade.

she is married to Kyle alcorn, who is an assistant coach on grace’s men’s soccer team.

assistant coach amy abbitt

amy abbitt is entering her fourth year on the Lady Lancers’ coaching staff. abbitt graduated from grace in 2010 and soon after joined the coaching staff as the recruiting coordinator. abbitt is a warsaw, Ind., native and was a two-sport athlete for the warsaw Tigers. In her four years she helped lead her team to back-to-back appearances in the semi-states for soccer and one trip to the state finals with the basketball team. Abbitt’s four years as a Lady Lancer were spent as an anchor and leader in the midfield. Her statistics rank her among the top players in program history: she graduated as no. 8 all-time in career goals scored (18), seventh in career assists (11) and eighth in career points (47). In her four years abbitt was able to captain the team to noticeable improvement. During her senior year, grace finished 9-0 in the nonconference play and 4-3-1 in conference. she then helped lead grace to the nccaa national championships in Kissimmee, Fla. In the

final game of her career, Abbitt played one of her best games as she scored two goals to bring the team back from a two-goal deficit and end the season with a 14-6-3 record. amy currently lives in winona Lake, Ind., and is a special education teacher at Lincoln elementary in warsaw.

welcome to grace college women’s soccer!! The team and coach-ing staff are simply stoked you are here!!

every person involved in our program wants you to know about Possession-Attacking Futbol -- what we are about and most impor-tantly what we stand for.

we are a university level soccer program in the united states of america who knows that we have sinned and fallen short of the glory of god (romans 3:23) and that the punishment for that sin is death (romans 6:23). However, we also know that the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ because when we were still lost in our sin he died for us, substituting his death in place of ours (romans

6:23, Romans 5:8). Yet, that is not the whole story. Jesus rose from the grave and conquered death (Luke 24:6-7). since we confess with our mouth and believe in our heart that Jesus was raised from the dead we are saved (romans 10:9-10). In this we have an eternal destination of heaven.

This changes everything!! This is the beginning of Possession attacking-Futbol. since this is true, our desire is to demon-strate these truths found in the Bible through soccer. our brand of Futbol is a considerate style. we desire to share the ball ridiculously and get everyone on the field involved. This is an extremely creative, demanding, and dynamic style of intentional possession where every player attacks. Each player is vitally important.

The idea is that you would see the Lord in the style we play and the personality of the players that play on the pitch; in quite simply the way we all go about playing this game….from hours before the match to way after the match. (1 cor. 12) our desire is that you would know christ and have an eternal home in heaven!! Jesus is standing at the door and knocking. we want to encourage you, hear his voice! open the door! He will enter your life and you will never be the same!! (rev 3:20) This is the reason for OUR joy! There is a peace that surpasses all understanding (Phil 4:7) and a joy that is simply in-expressible (1 Peter 1:8-9) for those who have found their hope in christ.

This is why we are a part of Possession-Attacking Futbol and why we desire to “Ball it up!”
