This workshop will address the legal, clinical, and administrative issues related to evaluating children who are involved in the juvenile justice system. Reviewed in this two day workshop is the philosophy of the juvenile court, the juvenile justice process in Florida, Florida law regarding competence to proceed with the juvenile justice process, clinical evaluation of juveniles’ competence related abilities, assessment of violence and re-offense risk among juveniles, and assessment to facilitate disposition and treatment/intervention of those in the juvenile justice system. Upon completion of this workshop, participants may request to be placed on the DCF Referral List for court-appointment to evaluate juveniles’ competence to proceed with the legal process.

This three-day program instructs psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health professionals on how to conduct evaluations for criminal courts. The content focuses on competence to proceed (“competence to stand trial”) evaluations and mental state at the time of the offense (“sanity”) evaluations. Upon completion of this workshop, participants may request to be placed on the DCF referral list.
