Welcome,
What a year it has been. From the day we left for Denver in January when it was 50 above to returning home 10 dayslater to -22. From there, the weather didn’t really improve until mid-May, only to have an incredibly dry summer, followed by what has become an extremely wet fall. Anymore, it seems normal is just the average of the extremes. That said, the cattle have responded, persevered just as we have, and in the end, given us their best. Speaking of thebest, I truly believe there is no question with regard to the quality, depth, and breadth of our offering this year. Lastfall, a fellow breeder challenged me to be more like the best of the other British breeds...i.e. sell some of those greatcows we know are there and if they have a heifer calf at side better yet. I thought we were different enough already forsimply selling more bred heifers than heifer calves! Those of you that know me also know that there is nothing I likemore than a challenge. So, as the summer came to a close it became apparent to me that I could meet the challengeset in front of me and truly offer cows from the top cut of our herd, many of which were raising our best individualheifer calves. Couple that with an expanded, very diverse, and most importantly, elite set of bred heifers and I believewe have created something that is truly one of a kind.I am fortunate to work closely with some people who share the same type of objectives and desire to better the breed. The folks from GAL, SBR, and GCF have opened their gates as well helping make Durham Nation 2013 the largestoffering of Shorthorn and ShorthornPlus females to sell all fall.As always, if you would like to extend your trip, let us know. We have access to over 2200 acres within 60 miles of theranch for upland game and whitetail hunting with breathtaking scenery as a backdrop. Also, the Schrag family hasmoved their sale to the day following ours. For those of you coming long distances, the opportunity to make it aweekend in the Dakota’s with great people and great Shorthorn cattle as the focal points is something that is bothexciting and inviting. There are numerous city centers between here and Marion offering the best of the city withunparalleled hometown feel.I truly hope you are able to take some time from your busy schedules and be with us on Saturday, November 2. Ibelieve It will be a day in which future herds are built upon. Most Sincerely,
Derek

I have been looking at Shorthorn sale catalogs since I was a baby and it should come as no surprise that my first word was cow. My parents can attest. As I thought of what to write when it came to Lot 1 & 1A, I submit this. Every Shorthorn female sale in the lower 48 can, and more often than not, leads off with a great heifer calf. But how many lead off with a great pair? I am hard pressed to recall many, if any. What sets Durham Nation apart? Itdoesn’t just lead off with 1, it leads off with 10.

2A is a full sib to JSF/RB Prestige 8U. Given his proven production ability in the highly esteemed Ash Valley herd of Lovings, it comes as no surprisethat this gal does not miss. She has raised 2 sons that made the bull sale and her this year’s heifer calf is a big time ShorthornPlus show prospect.

Chanel is an incredible Shorthorn female and her production is every bit as good. Every calf she has had has been sold as a bull or as a show heifer. Her Answer heifer calf has been a standout since day one. It is our commitment to provide the very best of our heifer calf pairs and this one surely fitsthe bill. Reap the rewards of our efforts to produce “the kind.”

2W is the dam of last years 2nd high selling heifer calf that sold to Hayley Ferguson in TN. The year prior she raised the 3rd high selling bull onDurhams for Denver going to Schuring’s, in SD. They were exceptional individuals, but neither looked like 40A at this age and stage. 2W is a can’t misscow and 40A is one of the best Shorthorn show heifer prospects to sell all fall.

51T is an own daughter of the immortal 974, dam of Red Demand. 51T has done a great job here and her production potential has yet to be reached. Ifyou are serious about making better Shorthorns, a piece of the Marigold Maria cow family will be a wise investment. She hit a homerun to Bellringerwith 33A. If you need a heifer with enough steam to run at the big shows and enough cow power to be a bull maker later, 33A deserves the utmostconsideration.

The Velvet’s need no introduction and this is very likely one of the best. She has raised a $6500 bull that found his way to Nova Scotia from Denver andhas had several exceptional females as well. Her Master heifer calf epitomizes practical, performance oriented cattle with practicality built in, whichcomes as no surprise given the great programs responsible for the stock loaded in her pedigree. Her mating to Righteous is quite intriguing and so isher heifer calf at side.

Some of you that have looked at these catalogs for as long as I have will remember TCC MS Springfield. Mike Dugdale found a daughter years ago fordad and since we have always had MS Springfield’s in the herd. They are performance cattle with eye appeal. This cow has a unique pedigree and hasraised some great bulls for us, namely, JSF Jazz 29Z, a member of our Champion pen of 3 from the 2013 NWSS that later went on to sell for $8000 toJodi Hawken in SK. We tried the Medicine Man bull as a outcross THF/PHAF sire on a handful of cows last year AI and got some really neat calves. 71Ahas the gas to run in the fastlane.

644 is a cow that once you have seen, you will not soon forget. She is the dam of another member of our 2013 NWSS Champion Pen of 3, JSF McCoy39Z. McCoy is now splitting time between the esteemed Byland herd and one of the real up-and-comers in the breed, Lee Miller of Paint ValleyShorthorns. He fetched $10,000 last year and the contending bidder was a commercial cattleman in ND. Had McCoy come along 4 years earlier whenwe presented our first group of Proud Jazz son’s to the public, it’s almost scary to think what he would have brought but my bet is he would have beenstanding in Plain City, OH or Dunlap, IA. This gal has sons working in several states. Her heifer can work a number of ways. Tie into the opportunity toown powerful outcross cow.

The Top Hand daughters are great cows and the blue ones are phenomenal. It’s why we brought Top Hand back here this year at age 8 to runon our black cows. This gal has her whole life ahead of her. And she’s already scored with a top heifer calf in 12A. We have had a few blue fall cowscalve so far to Colonel Gus and one word comes to mind. WOW.

The following bred heifers will be lotted in groups of 10 each. The first 10 being black and blue roans, the second 10 red and red roans. We will sell choice of the lots 76-85 first. Buyer may take 1, 2, or all 10. Once 76-85 are sold, we will sell choice of 86-95 in the samemanner. All of these heifers are at least 50% blood concentration and can be registered for an additional $50 each. They are sired byProud Jazz, Proud Jazz sons, and also a son of SBR Tsunami 20T. Should you purchase these females and desire to have themregistered, please let the settlement desk know and we will accommodate. Be sure to study the stock in each of these groups. Wepresent them in volume for our customers who desire to purchase groups of half sisters. Several of the solid black females carry theservice of Lautner’s no fault calving ease bull Jesse James. I firmly believe several of the breds safe to him would absolutely ring thebell as club calf mommas. Conversely, if you are looking for some Shorthorn influence in your cowherd, herein lies a great opportunityto purchase a strong, select group of females.

Australian Ambassadorby Blaire Boyer
As many of you know, Dan Donnelly has evolved into my right hand
man over the last 4 years. I will never forget the first time he came
to the farm looking for some work on the weekends and the days
he had a lighter class load. I’m not sure he had ever seen so many
Shorthorns all in one place, nor could he fathom how we would get
all the things done that I told him we would. The rest, as they say, is
history. Truly, my most enjoyable experiences as the role of a
mentor and employer have come in watching Dan grow from a
wide-eyed kid into a polite, professional, hard working young man
that anyone would be proud to say was theirs. I am humbled to say
he leads the crew that is Team JSF. To reward Dan for his efforts
and help defray the cost of the trip to Australia we are donating the
proceeds from the top selling heifer in lots 76-95 to him.
Your support of him, the American Junior Shorthorn Association
and the Australian Ambassador program are greatly appreciated.
