CLEM SUNTERSession Focus: “Moving into an Adaptive South African Future where Foxes Feast”

Your role in ensuring a South African future that moves beyond the quest for the silver bullet into an adaptive environment where foxes feast!

Clem Sunter is a name synonymous with the integration of scenario planning into the mainstream process of strategic planning and decision making in organisations and governments. He challenges organisations to be foxes - quick-witted and adaptable animals; an essential capability for world-class performance in today’s volatile, fast-changing environment. Sunter and his co-author, Chantell Ilburywere instrumental in changing the political conversation on the future of our country. The presentation of different possible paths -positive and negative - that South Africa could take influenced the contending parties to modulate their political and economic strategies and arrive at a negotiated settlement. Author of best-selling books in South Africa: "The Mind of The Fox- Scenarion Planning in Action, and Games Foxes Play-Planning for Extraordinary times. The South African case study is considered by specialists in the field to be one of the most powerful examples of the use of scenario planning to create a better world.

LYSHA ALBRIGHT & STEFANO BINISession Focus: “Beyond the Silver Bullet: Using the Organic Emergence of an Adaptive Method in Healthcare to Create Organisation Development Solutions Anywhere”

Adaptive business processes are emerging organically in Healthcare in the US as it faces radical reform. Given the complexity of the current health care environment, “firefighting” is a common activity as managers and leaders seek to solve a myriad of problems each day. Adaptive approaches provide a powerful alternative. Collaborator Lysha Albright, supported remotely by Stefano Bini, will demonstrate how their adaptive process developed organically.

Lysha Albright, Ph.D. has over 20 years of organisational research and development experience and 14 years of managerial experience. She has expertise in strategy development and implementation, organizational assessment and design, business and operational process improvement, and team and leadership development. She is currently the Principal Consultant for The Permanente Medical Group’s Regional Office of Organizational Effectiveness for Kaiser Permanente in Northern California.

Stefano Bini, MD is Chief of Arthroplasty for Kaiser Permanente East Bay, one of the US's largest not-for profit health organisations. He has held multiple leadership positions in this organisation as well as serving on both National and International OrthopaedicCommittees. He currently serves on on both National and International Orthopaedic Associations. He currently serves on the Board of Directors and the International Committee for the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and served for 6 years on theInternational Committee of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.

MIAS DE KLERKSession Title:

“The Halo Effect”

Mias de Klerk is the Chief Ethics Officer at Sasol. I previously worked as an Organizational Development consultant and coach in Sasol, specializing in personal and organizational transformation. Mias filled several senior management and leadership positions, but changed careers 12 years ago to focus his career as organisational behaviour specialist and transformation consultant. Mias facilitated transformation workshops all over the world, including countries such as India, Qatar, China, Uzbekistan, South Africa, Germany, Canada, the UK and the USA. His qualifications include a PhD in Organisational Behaviour, a Masters Degree in Business Leadership (MBL) and a degree in Engineering. Apart from his employment in Sasol as OD consultant, Mias is also associate professor in Organisational Behaviour and Business Ethics at the University of Pretoria and visiting professor at the University of the Free State. He authored several publications and presented extensively at international conferences, including the Academy of Management (USA) Annual Conferencewhere he was nominated for the William H. Newman Award. His areas of expertise and interest include studying life and work meaning, system psychodynamics, emotional trauma in organisations and generative dialogue as transformational mechanisms. . His professional memberships include the Academy of Management, American Psychological Association, Viktor Frankl Institute of Logotherapy, Society of Industrial and Organisational Psychology and the Institute of People Management. Mias is happily married and the father of two wonderful daughters. Mias stays and works in Johannesburg, but try to spend as much time possible on his small retreat in the countryside, travelling the world and visiting the many beautiful places in our lovely country

LUCILLE GREFFFlourish! 2013 Master Facilitator

“Embarking on an Adaptive Journey using Liberating Structures” and “Transitioning from Mind to Soul to Adaptive Reality: Integrating the Conference Experience and Embarking on a New Journey”

Lucille is an OD practitioner and the co-developer of the Integrative Enneagram Questionnaire, an adaptive questionnaire that is being used by coaches and OD practitioners globally to support development at all levels of organisational systems. She teaches OD at WorldsView™ Academy with a specific focus on Change and Project Management. She serves as a volunteer board member for the SAODN. She is currently completing her PhD on the relationship that OD practitioners have with complexity theory.

DEBBIE BLACKBURNSession Title:

“Using the National Development Plan to Create a Flourishing Society”

Debbie Blackburn is CEO: SA Organisation Development Network (OD Professional Body) and Director: OD Net. Debbie is an accredited master-level OD practitioner with over 20 years of experience in the fields of organisation development, design and effectiveness, enterprise change management and strategy. She has worked in numerous industries in the public and private sectors. She is a leader in the field of OD and is currently serving as the CEO for the South African Organisation Development Network and is a member of the Institute of Directors in SA.

SONJA BLIGNAUTSession Title:

“Moving Beyond the Silver Bullet: A Complex World and the Call to Adaptive Change”

Sonja Blignaut has over a decade of experience in the realms of narrative & complexity. She consulted for PWC Consulting and IBM before co-founding The Narrative Lab in 2006. Currently she is an independent consultant and founder of More Beyond, specialising in the application of complexity and narrative-based processes to help individuals and teams through periods of transition. She has consulted locally and internationally and is the South African training partner for Cognitive Edge, a Singapore based company founded by Prof Dave Snowden who is the author of the Cynefin Sense-making framework. Sonja is also an executive level Strengths Coach and is passionate about restoring meaning, passion and purpose to people's work and lives.

MANIE BOSMANSession Title:

“A Brain New World: Neuroscience Enters the Workplace”

CEO and founder of the Strategic Leadership Institute (current) , Manie draws on more than 18 years of international experience in executive leadership and organizational development. As a consultant and coach, Bosman’s core focuses include the neuroscience of leadership; strengths-based development, strategic leadership; change management; diversity management and developing values-based cultures. Manie has good intercultural and global skills from working with clients in Africa, the America’s, Europe and the Far East.Bosman has presented numerous seminars and workshops on leadership, communication, strategic planning, skills development, team development, employee engagement and cultural competency across the globe. He also regularly delivers management training to audiences in the United States, Mexico, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, Singapore, Japan, and China in face-to-face events as well as via Virtual Classroom technology. Manie has developed training material and programs for leadership development and served as keynote speaker and presenter at various international events. He has been a contributing author to many publications including the South African Encyclopedia, Beeld, LMS, Focus and various other publications.

BILL ZYBACHSession Title:

“Four Landscapes of Work: Experience what differentiates ‘Directive’ and ‘Participative’ from ‘Adaptive’ and ‘Emergent’ Work”

Bill Zybach is well versed in both traditional and emerging approaches of organization design, effectiveness, business process optimization, restructuring and development. His strengths include expertise in assessment, strategy, change, engagement and technology implementation. He sits on the Board of Directors of the “Organization Design Forum” with a focus on “whole-system” and “adaptive” methods because they accelerate change. He is currently involved in projects in Healthcare, Government and Manufacturing to implement collaborative, adaptive, & networked ways of working. He has developed and delivered training in organization alignment, and is collaborating on a book “The Four Landscapes of Work”, a practical handbook on organization design for practitioners, business managers and leader. Additionally he is involved in the delivery of conferences in the US and South Africa that increase participants' knowledge, skill and experience in "adaptive" organization design.

“A Walk up the Hill: Connecting to the Vision and Purpose of Organisation Development“

Johan Greeff (BA. Ba Hons. MA) is a Clinical Psychologist (PS4995), Master OD Practitioner (SABPP 1323) and SABPP Mentor and has more than 30 years experience in: Organisation Development, Training and Development, Assessment Centre, Organisational Behaviour and Executive Coaching. Some of Johan's career highlights include: Lecturing at most South African Universities (Full-time lecturer at UP); being a partner at MAST SA (International Consulting Firm), founder member of the International Organisation DevelopmentAssociation(1986) (Celebrated 25th Anniversary 2010); Actively involved in Diversity Management since 1985; Managing DirectorTreetops Management and Development Consultants (Black Empowered Consulting Firm since 1994); Worked and met with international experts like Leo Buscaglia, Harrison Owen, Syd Parnes, Joel Goodman, Mark Shuttleworth, Angeles Arrien and Ben Yanoov, Peter Block. Johan lives by the credo “I see life as a precious gift and live to the full (Comrades, Argus, motor racing, nature etc) and appreciate that in this, life is actually doing me”. Johan is married to Laura and the proud father of Lucille, Jeanne-Louise, Rochelle and Johan Jnr. and grandfather to Tariq, Bjorn and Jessica.

Steve Hobbs holds a Masters Degree in Social Science (Industrial Psychology) (UKZN). Between 1984 and 1994, Hobbs worked in the Human Resource Management arena in the Private Sector and has been involved in OD Consulting with RGA Consulting (RGA AFRICA Consulting) since 1994. He has consulted in Private, Public & Civil Society Sectors in over 12 countries. Steve’s primary experience is in process-design and process-facilitation of large scale, whole system strategic change. Major clients over the past 20 years have included : Woolworths, The Presidency, Department of Water Affairs, Office of the Premier KZN, Toyota SA, Cricket SA, Illovo Sugar, RainbowChicken, The MDC (Movement for Democratic Change) – all, plus others, have been long term strategic change projects (processes)

CHRISTO VAN STADENSession Title:

“Biodanza: Integration in an Adaptive World through Music and Movement”

Christo van Staden has a decade’s experience of facilitating Biodanza for groups across a wide spectrum: corporate workshops, regular weekly sessions for public groups, sessions with schools, care facilities, professional conferences, and more. Currently he is senior faculty at WorldsView Academy for Organisational Communication and Personal Development, and leading the development of the new WorldsView Academy Work Groups product portfolio. He is also an experienced designer and facilitator for organisational learning and strategy processes. Christo is an artist and a published poet. He has four children.

CRAIG YEATMANSession Title:

“Time, Space and Technology: Can OD Software Help to Create ‘Good’ Organisation Development?”

Craig Yeatman is the Managing Director of WorldsView™ Academy. Craig's areas of expertise include entrepreneurial leadership andorganisational development, with specific focus on the challenges of leadership and strategy. In his professional activities, Craig is engaged with the craft of building sustainable and successful organisations. The combination of his extensive career history inleadership positions and his Master's research in traditional African governance modalities inform Craig's view of the world. Craig has co-published interventions that are now used globally – such as the Nine Conversations in Leadership© and Purposeful Teams™. Craig is developing a framework that helps OD and Change Practitioners make sense of change and select interventions. He is married and shares his home with three children, two dogs and a cat. Craig is currently the Chairman of the South African Organisation Development Network (SAODN)

“Using an ‘Integral Lens’ for an Adaptive Perspective on Employee Engagement”

Lee Kingma is currently employed at Juta & Co as the Group HR Manager. She holds a Doctorate in Human Resources Management, a Master of Business Administration and an executive coaching qualification. She is a part time lecturer for the Business School of the Netherlands and TSiBA. Lee published a book "What’s your Tribe?" which explores utilising a personality typology, the Enneagram, in the workplace. She has also published in academic journals. As a 'Pracademic' she is interested in combining sound OD theory with practical application in the organisation. She is passionate about creating a workplace climate which encourages high employee engagement,recognises individuals and is aligned to the business strategy.

AIDEN CHOLES & DAVID SEBESession Title:

“Adaptability and Continuity for Organisational Resilience”

Aiden Choles is a co-founder and the managing director of The Narrative Lab. With degrees in psychology and theology, Aiden focuses his time on assisting organisations in getting to grips with their stories and how those stories can unlock rehumanisation, effectiveness and health.

David Sebe is a junior Organisational Development consultant at The Narrative Lab. He is qualified within the fields of Corporate Communications, Information and Knowledge Management. David specialises in Knowledge Management, and as part of his Role at the Narrative Lab, he is a custodian for Wisdom Continuity – A narrative based offering that is designed to assist organisations with the facilitation of knowledge transfer.

KAREN GREAVES & SAM LAINGSession Title:

“Making Friends with Werewolves…Why you don’t Need a Silver Bullet: Ideas from Agile Software Development”

Karen and Sam have worked in software their whole lives. With type A personalities and a strong work ethic, they have both done their share of overtime on death march projects. Both of them eventually knew they had to find another way. Agile is what brought themtogether when Karen hired Sam as a ScrumMaster at a company trying to do Scrum for the first time. In 2012, they took the plunge and started their own business: Growing Agile. Since then they have been doing the work that they are passionate about. Best of all they have an impact on other people’s lives! If they have one principle at Growing Agile it is continuous experimentation. Karen and Sam love trying new things and don’t let fear of failure get in the way.

STAN HORWITZ & PETE SMITHSession Title:

“Transformational Storyboarding and Using LEGO to Flourish in a Complex World”

Stan, having worked his way over the past 20 years through the ranks of HR and business line management at every level, can say that he truly operates as a strategic business partner. He has a solid understanding of strategic and operational business related issues and needs. Stan plays a strategic partnership role to many of South Africa’s leading organisations across many sectors of the economy. Primarily he is known for making strategy work.. Stan has presented a number of conferences on a wide range of topical HR issuesincluding: Organisational Change; Mergers and Acquisitions and E – HR. Stan recently facilitated and presented at the IIR 7th Annual Forum of the Organisational Design and Development Conference the latest OD and HR Net innovation - Transformational Storyboarding Methodology. This alternative OD approach taps and records individual and organisational Wisdoms used in unfolding Futures through presencing.

Pete Smith has a BA degree having majored in Sociology and Philosophy. He then went on and completed an Honours degree in Philosophy. His academic education was rounded off with an MBL degree from UNISA. His career over 40 years has included lecturing, consulting and facilitation. This includes heading management development at Ford Motor Company, consulting in marketing strategy and implementation for Perry and Associates, and (unsuccessfully) trying to make the chartered accounting profession marketing oriented as marketing director of Coopers, Theron & Du Toit. For the last 10 years he has been using LEGO to foster a shared bond in teams, and the last two years have included facilitating the LEGO Serious Play methodology.
