The President Speaks (Continued from Page 1)

I trust that they will enjoy our fellowship and look forward to their contribution. We read in our local and national press an often despondent view on society in general and young people in particular. However, when successful stories of our activities are well reported, this can alleviate such jaundiced views. An excellent example which I was privileged to attend on your behalf was ‘The Young Musicians’ Competition’ so ably organised by Marian and her committee. This was a superb evening of young talent of which we should all be proud. I was delighted that we have been able to support Bicton College by interviewing students on vocational courses. This has been greatly appreciated and many thanks to all, including Raleigh members, who took part. Thanks to Graham and his committee, I was able to present the Club’s generous donation to the Community Larder.

The Club continues to receive the invaluable help of the Inner Wheel at our events and I receive particular support from its President. They would like volunteers to help their stall on 25th May in the Manor Gardens and I am confident that we will provide the necessary assistance.

Finally, I look forward to your support at the ‘Spice Night’ and the “Walk or Ride!”.

From the Inner Wheel Exmouth Inner Wheel had a good start to 2013 with an extremely interesting talk by Marian Scott on her work as a former Social Worker and Truancy Officer with the City of

Emergency Food for Local

People Our club presented a cheque for £500 to The Exmouth Community Larder. This is organised by Christians Together in Exmouth and is run from the Salvation Army Hall in Sheppards Row just off Exeter Road. Presenting the cheque to Major Stephen Watson of the Salvation Army is President Keith. Also present were Dickson Tolman, Dick

Bishop and Graham Kirby. The Community Larder provides emergency food to individuals or families in the area with referrals from local Churches and

Agencies. Graham says ‘We were able to see the well stocked shelves and the efficient system which had been set up to provide for local people in their time of greatest need’.

Polio Eradication

Well it could not last and sadly three new Polio cases were reported this week. The 2013 total is now five, though these should be compared with the total at the same time in 2012 which was twenty. Rotary Day came and went and with it many activities to support the eradication of polio. Two significant ones were featured on the RIBI website:

David Beckham has become the latest in a long line of celebrities to endorse Rotary International’s End Polio Now campaign. In a comment posted on his Facebook

page he said: “As a UNICEF Ambassador I helped to immunise children against polio in Sierra Leone. We are now so close to ending this paralysing disease for good”; Five Rotarians from Kent cycled through London to 10 Downing Street on Rotary Day, Saturday 23 February, to deliver a letter to the Prime Minister recognising the UK’s role in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. The cycle ride around London was useful training for the Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Sittingbourne Invicta for a planned 150 mile cycle ride in July 2013 in aid of the campaign.

Plaque Spruce Up The Membership Services Committee on 18th February sought to renew the Rotary Club plaque at The Manor Hotel. Chairman Brian Drake said, ‘ It needs to be updated to bear the new name of our club and the old one is showing its age’.

‘Dahn Unda’ and the Far

East Remember Ed Elsey the globe trotting priest. He is returning to speak to the club on the evening of 7th October. What did he get up to? We will have to wait and see.

“The Walk or Ride!” The Spring time, sunny for sure, “The Walk or Ride!” will take place on Sunday 28th April. Cliff says ‘We want as many people to walk or cycle. Tell your friends, tell your family, tell the organisations you are connected with that this is the easiest fund raiser they will ever do and the most pleasant. Lets make this event a record breaker’.

Mock Interviews On 4th and 5th March the club extended Mock Interviews to about 16 Bicton College students. We hope we gave them all a useful experience.

The Year of the Snake Frank reports on his recent holiday to Singapore with Bev and his family. He says ‘I carried the goodwill of our club to the Rotary Club of Singapore East. That club demonstrated its international credentials by entertaining a sister club from Taiwan though there were language challenges as their president only spoke Hokkien.’ Frank continues ‘This year is the Chinese year of the snake in which steady progress and attention to detail is foremost and is complimentary to the Year of the Ox when our club was founded’. Ed says ‘If you believe this stuff then we are in for a good year ahead’.

In previous years of the snake: - The first polio vaccine was successfully used; - Edmund Hillary and Sherper Tenzing were the first to conquer Everest; - The 1953 North Sea Storm Surge killed many people. Not all good news then!

RIBI RIBI RIBI RIBI AssemblyAssemblyAssemblyAssembly Frank reports that he attended the Assembly in what will be his new role as Assistant Regional Rotary Foundation Co-ordinator (ARRFC). He says, ‘As you are aware, I have been District Foundation Chairman since Ist July 2005 apart from a spell as Assistant Governor and a District Officer for 8 years. Thus, I can say that there will be changes in the year to come’.

The Chairman of the Board, Paul Edwards, expounded why RIBI had to change; more than anything to bring its image into the 21st century, to gain more recognition for our mission and, thus, importantly to attract new members. Frank’s Achievements so far:- An advertisement for our Thanks for Life stickers will appear on the big screen at the International Convention in Lisbon; Keith will be able to take our Thanks for Life sticker reels to the Harrogate national convention for more sales to benefit End Polio Now.

Yes it is THIS BIG!!!! Have you ever caught a fish THIS BIG? John Pankhurst challenges any member by asking ‘Have any of you ever caught a trout whilst fly fishing weighing over 7lbs’.

Jamie, pictured here, John’s Grandson, did just that and is proud as punch to have landed a 7lbs rainbow trout. When Jamie was asked if he put it back, he told me that it is now in the freezer and will be cooked up for his Mum’s Birthday.

Always Leave Mother-in-

Law at Home John being John passed me another little note last week with a fishy tale written on it:- ‘Our barber was keen on sea fishing and as a young man, just married, decided to meet his pals at a Cornish Cove for some night time fishing. He took his caravan accompanied by his mother-in-law and her sister in another caravan. (Presumably to make sure he didn’t get up to any extra marital funny business). He caught a 10 pounder. He was convinced that it would be a record. Before he went to bed he put it headfirst in a bowl of water to avoid loss of weight due to evaporation so that in the morning he could

have it officially weighed. He awoke in the morning full of anticipation at the prospect of being haled as a champion fisherman. When he went to the bowl where he had left the fish, he was mortified to find that it had vanished. Yes. you’ve guessed it, Mother-in-Law had cooked it for breakfast’.

New Members Induction A double induction for the club is unusual.

Members were delighted to welcome our new members Colin Rowland and Hannah Burford to the club. They come with different skills and experience. We are confident that they will bring their talents to bear on the life of the club and will become true Rotarians as they settle in and realise what can be achieved within our organisation.

The Strangest Things People do the strangest things don’t they? Rotarian Clive Bradburn from Maidstone Riverside tells us that at a typical day of emptying his club’s spiral well at their Leisure Centre, strange things are found other than coins. Here lies loads of money and random objects.

And then there’s the attempt to extract coins with the knife, fork and spoon trick. No one told them that neither money nor plastic is magnetic. Orange juice is frequently poured into the funnel meaning

that the coins have to be washed. (Money laundering Rotary style). The freakiest thing was Mum leaving baby tucked up warm and asleep in the well while she went for a cuppa. Luckily baby did not go into a spin and disappear down the hole.

The Gift of Sight Francis reports ‘2,100 spectacles have just been sent off to Africa where they will be sorted, repaired and reused’. A great initiative which Francis quietly works away at, benefiting many people with sight problems in Africa.

Plymouth its the Pits How many people does it take to run a theatre? One hell of a lot! as we found out on our backstage visit to The Plymouth Theatre Royal. Martin took us on another of his amazing visits, a guided tour from the Stage to the Orchestra Pit. 30 club members and guests took part. We were part of a larger group of 60, looking out from the stage into the auditorium, our inner actors being restrained (But not Ian’s, see picture) as we listened to our guide in awe. ‘The auditorium can hold up to 1,300 people’ our guide explained but can be reduced in size by closing off ‘The Gods’ for

more intimate shows. The huge stage (the second biggest theatre stage in the UK) could be widened and lowered to suit all occasions and is a favourite with names such as Cameron MacKintosh who loves the theatre and the nearby theatre workshops which make props and costumes. This is the

theatre of choice for starting many great West End and International productions. Divided into smaller groups we saw the prompt area, the loading bays (27 articulated lorries full of gear for the recent “Oliver” production), the dressing rooms which were underwhelming considering the quality of productions shown here. This theatre and associated workshops creates over 300 jobs in Plymouth. Full of information and understanding why the arts need to be subsidised, as it does, we retired for a pleasant lunch and fellowship before returning home. Next trip Castle Drogo 1st May. Can’t wait!

Extended Leave of Absence The Membership Services Committee recently discussed extended leave of absence. Club rules can be found on the RIBI website. If in doubt consult with Courtney. Basically it is common courtesy to let the Secretary know if you are to have an extended period of absence (three or more consecutive absences) from club meetings for whatever reason. In extreme cases this could affect your membership so please do let Courtney know so that you can be excused in such circumstances.

District Reorganisation As from 1st July 2015 Districts 1170 and 1290 will merge to form District 1175. This will comprise Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. This decision was made by Rotary International in La Jolla California in January 2013.
