About the Cover:

Who We Are: extraordinary People on an extraordinary MissionThe Bay Education Foundation, Inc. is a charitable organization comprised of community members who want the best education possible for local students. With an overarching mission of promoting excellence in public education, the Bay Education Foundation addresses this mission through four programs, all of which are designed to stimulate, identify, or enhance excellence in local K-12 education. The Foundation depends on the support of over 800 individuals and organizations who are doers, not talkers.

ProgrAMs: Four reasons to give

Take Stock in Children: This is a college preparation program that provides scholarships, mentors, and hope to promising students. In general, our students begin Take Stock at the end of sixth grade and remain in the program until they graduate from college or complete a certificate program. Currently, we are serving 100 middle and high school students. All eligible grade six students are invited to apply during the January 2014 application period.

Classroom Grants: Classroom teachers can apply for up to $500 to help fund innovative classroom projects that are designed to improve student achievement. Between fifty and seventy-five grants are awarded each year in four categories. All employees are invited to apply.

Awards of Excellence: Showcase events such as the Three Rivers Science Fair, the Tom Barefield History Fair, the Best of Bay Student Art Show, Math Counts, and the Fifth Grade Choral Festival are designed to encourage students to produce outstanding work. Recognition events such as Teacher of the Year, Support Employee of the Year, and Principal/Assistant Principal of the Year also highlight outstanding job performance. The Foundation is proud to assist the school district with these events.

Employee Tuition Assistance: Tuition assistance is provided for employees who choose to return to school to upgrade their skills in ways that benefit students and the school district. All employees are invited to apply.

DonAtions: Four Ways to give Sponsorships: The Foundation conducts three fund-raising events annually: Strides for Scholars, Arts Alive, and Golf FORE Education. Funds from these events are used to provide scholarships and classroom grants. Sponsorships range in price from $100 to $10,000.

Memberships: Almost one thousand individuals make annual membership donations to the Foundation. Memberships range from $20 to $1,000 a year.

Memorial Gifts: Many community members donate to the Foundation in memory of loved ones. Memorial gifts are placed in the scholarship fund or in a particular area, depending on the donor’s wishes.

License Plates: Local drivers can donate to the Foundation when they purchase or renew their car tags. Drivers can either purchase the special “Support Education” tag or can elect to include a small donation to Take Stock in Children. In either case, your local foundation receives the funds.

Students pictured on the cover are a part of Take Stock in Children, a state wide program which is implemented in Bay County by the Bay Education Foundation. This program offers scholarships, mentors, and hope to students who meet program qualifications during their middle and high school years. Students apply for the program in grade six, and those accepted receive an outstanding opportunity to achieve their academic goals. Students must make good grades in challenging classes, attend school regularly, display exemplary character, remain drug and crime free, volunteer in the community and meet weekly with a mentor. Students who meet these standards receive a college scholarship as well as college readiness benefits.

Funds to support these scholarships are raised locally and matched dollar-for-dollar by the legislature through the Florida Prepaid College Foundation. For more information, contact the Bay Education Foundation at 767-4111 or www.bayeducationfoundation.org.

Letter FroM the PresiDent

FounDAtion WeLCoMes neW boArD MeMbers The Bay Education Foundation is pleased that three prominent local citizens have joined the Board of Directors. New board members are Dr. Brett Frank and Pam Walsingham. They will be joined by David Scruggs, who is returning to the board. “Our active board welcomes new ideas and energy,” says David Powell, current president. “We have a lot of work to do and need all the help we can get.” Pam Walsingham is a Panama City native and Rutherford High School graduate who divides her professional time between Tonie’s Dance Workshop and the family business, WonderWorks, where she is the Director of Sales. Pam enjoys being involved in community affairs and also serves on the Bay Arts Alliance Board of Directors. Pam and husband Mike

are the parents of three children. Brett Frank is also local, having graduated from Mosley High School. Brett’s professional focus is First Choice Physical Therapy where he is an owner-practitioner. Because Brett’s parents and wife are teachers, Brett has a special interest in working to promote excellence in local schools. Brett and his wife Lacey are the parents of two children. David Scruggs is bringing several years’ experience and a deep understanding of the work of the Foundation. He is returning to the Board of Directors after an absence of several years. David is the Operations Manager for Peter Brown Construction, Inc., in Panama City Beach. David is active in Rotary and other community activities.

Dear Friends of Education:Along with local students, the Bay Education Foundation, Inc., goes back to school in August. Our mission is to promote excellence in public education. We are a group of caring citizens that are proud to partner with the school district in a way that supports exceptional teaching, learning, and opportunity in Bay County.

Please read about our programs on the facing page. We are proud of all that we do to enhance the programs and encourage the people that make up Bay District Schools. From Take Stock in Children to Excellence in Education to Awards of Excellence, we support the hard work of students and employees as they strive to improve every year.

The Bay Education Foundation invites you to become involved by becoming a mentor or a member or a volunteer for an event. Please visit www.bayeducationfoundation.org or call 850-767-4111 for more information.

Sincerely,

David Powell President

Dr. Charles Voorhis is Florida’s Take Stock in Children Mentor of the Year for 2013. Selected from a fi eld of over 7,500 mentors, Dr. Voorhis represents all the citizens in Florida who give their time to mentor students every week. “I would put our mentors up against any in the state—and I did,” said Janet Kessler, mentor coordinator for the Take Stock in Children program, with a laugh. “I was not one bit surprised when Dr. V. was selected because he is an amazing gentleman.” A retired physician, Dr. Voorhis got involved with his local Take Stock in Children program in Bay County because several of his

friends were mentors. Like all Take Stock m e n t o r s , V o o r h i s has worked diligently to “change a life over lunch” with the three students he has mentored. His weekly meetings with his students help to keep them focused on graduating from high school and attending college. Voorhis’ caring nature did not stop with motivating his students to excel in education. Johnny Atwell’s personal

life was also significantly impacted by the Mentor of the Year. Atwell was in a serious au tomob i l e accident after graduat ion- one that left him

paralyzed and unable to walk. Mentor Voorhis guided Atwell and his family through the maze of medical resources available and helped them access needed fi nancial support. He faithfully visited Atwell in the hospital and in his

handicapped-accessible apartment. . Dr. Voorhis has also served as a mentor to Andrew Sangster, currently a junior at the University of Central Florida, and William Jones, a senior at Arnold High School. “The success of our Take Stock program depends on great mentors,” said Kessler. “We are grateful to Dr. Voorhis and all the adults who help our Take Stock kids.” The Bay Education Foundation is always looking for caring, competent adults to serve as mentors to our students. If you would like to learn more about mentoring, please contact Janet Kessler at 850-767-4111 or [email protected] .us.

BAY EDUCATION FOUNDATION BREAKS RECORD FOR TAKE STOCK IN CHILDREN What has forty-one brains, eighty-two eyes, and unlimited hope? The 2013-14 group of Take Stock in Children Scholars, of course.

In May, the Bay Education Foundation inducted forty-one students, its largest group of Take Stock in Children scholars in the history of the program. These students will become a part of one of these most successful programs in the state. With a guarantee of fi nancial assistance for college, successful program completers will also be prepared to take advantage of this opportunity.

“For most of our kids, induction means the start of an eight to ten year relationship with the Bay Education Foundation,” said Don O’Neal, who chairs the scholarship committee.

“Beginning in seventh grade, we provide scholarships, mentors, and other support to kids who work to meet our standards.”

O’Neal explained that Take Stock scholars are required to take challenging classes, earn good grades, and attend school regularly. Additionally, students are required to demonstrate exemplary behavior, remain drug free and crime free, and volunteer in the community.

The Take Stock “Newbies” for 2013-14 come from all over Bay County and join fi fty-nine students who are already in the program.

Congratulations!!!

thrivent FinAnCiAL Presents striDes For sChoLArs The second annual Strides for Scholars 5K and Fun Run was held on Panama City’s scenic St. Andrews route in February, and almost 400 participants braved threatening skies to exercise for a good cause. “All my runner friends enjoy this event,” said Lori Hast, co-chair for the second year in a row. “The amenities are nice with beautiful t-shirts and a great brunch. Everyone is welcome, and everybody has fun.” Presented by Thrivent Financial Services, the event began near the Panama City Memorial Park and followed the safe and scenic St. Andrews route outlined in the city’s event manual. Awards and brunch follow the Fun Run at the school district’s

main offi ces in the Nelson Building on Balboa Avenue. “Our revenue was up by 20 percent,” reported Foundation board member Juan Andrada, who also served as co-chair of the event. “We’re hoping to grow by 25 percent

in 2014 in honor of the Bay Education Foundation’s upcoming silver anniversary.” Andrada added that proceeds from this event support the scholarship and grant programs of the Bay Education Foundation and draw a

dollar-for-dollar match from the state. Other sponsors of Strides for Scholars 2013 included Southern Orthopedic Specialists; Burke,Blue, Hutchison, Walters, and Smith; Arthur Rutenberg Homes; Warner Law Firm; Florida Architects; InkTrax; Bobby G. Callahan; WHATABURGER; and the Bagel Maker. If you are willing to help grow this event, mark your calendar for the third annual Strides for Scholars event, which will be held on February 22. Runners will be able to sign up through active.com or www.bayeducationfoundation.org later in the fall. For information about sponsoring this event, please contact Janet Kessler at 767-4111.

“Everyone is welcome, and everybody has fun.”

Junior LeAgue-eXCeLLenCe in eDuCAtion Thousands of students will benefi t from exciting classroom activities, additional equipment, and enhanced learning because of the Junior League’s Excellence in Education classroom grant program. The League partners with the Bay Education Foundation to provide extra funds to assist students in Bay

District Schools. The League also conducts a grant program for private schools. According to Dr. Carrie Baker, Grants Chairman for the Bay Education Foundation, this program is very popular with teachers. “It’s the biggest of our four grant programs,” says Baker, “and always attracts the most applications.”

Including the current period, the League will have donated over $50,000 to support the Excellence in Education program, impacting an estimated 25,000 students in the past fi ve years. This is just one of the many programs of the Junior League designed to help children in Bay County.

Arts ALive in bAY 2013: A greAt tiMe For A greAt CAuseArts Alive gives new meaning to the phrase “see and be seen” and has rapidly grown to be one of the biggest and best charity events in Bay County. A showcase of outstanding examples of performing and visual arts in Bay District Schools, Arts Alive III was held on April 5, 2013, at Edgewater Beach Resort on Panama City Beach. This year’s patrons enjoyed a reception, silent auction, art show, dinner, and a variety show.

“We planned the evening to surround our guests with delightful experiences,” said Tanya Deal, the 2013 co-chairman and co-founder of Arts Alive in Bay. “From the time they arrive to the minute they say good night to the performers, there is something exciting to do or entertaining to see and hear.” The reception provided time to catch up with friends, sample hors d’oeuvres, view the visual arts gallery, place a bid

in the silent auction, or spin a wheel for a prize. An elegant three-course dinner featuring fi let mignon and lobster is followed by a show featuring the best performing artists in Bay District Schools.

“It was our goal to create a prestigious event, “said Jody Wall, who is also a co-founder and co-chair. “We wanted it to be a big deal for the performers and for the patrons. That’s why we established such a stringent audition process for the acts.”

AUDITIONS Any student or employee in Bay District Schools is eligible to apply for auditions, which take place in early February. A panel of out-of-town judges evaluates the acts and creates the cast to ensure a well-rounded variety show for the audience. In addition to quality control, the audition

process also gives performers a very realistic learning experience.

SPONSORS The Bay Education Foundation is grateful to the sponsors and donors who make this event a success. Panhandle Educators Federal Credit Union has been the presenting sponsor for the past three years. Other major sponsors include Gulf Power Company, Royal American Management, Inc., Trustmark Bank, the Eye Center of North Florida, and the Bay Arts Alliance. Over 150 other businesses and inviduals sponsored tables and provided items for the silent auction. You can fi nd out more about sponsorships at the Foundation’s web site.

VOLUNTEERSIn addition to outstanding performers and generous sponsors, Arts Alive

relies on a large number of volunteers to help run the event. From greeters in cocktail dresses to stagehands in jeans, our volunteers ensure that guests enjoy a fi rst-class experience. Thanks to all the individuals listed here for playing a key role in Arts Alive: Justin Barnes, Tiffany Batyski, Freddy Brown, Barbara Burns, Dennis Byrd, Steve Cook, Michelle Creel, Keith Gibson, Jim Hayden, Sabrina Hayden, Kate Healy, Amy Hoyt, Jennifer Jones, Patty Kelly, Steve Kessler, Nancy Luther, Brandon Mullins, Tracy Neafi e, William Noe, Robyn Perry, Terri Reed, Lisa Rios, Bryan Taylor, Eva Thomas, Tanya Trazka, Don Turnage, and Daphne Watts.
