and Sexual Violence Prevention and Treatment Board (MDVPTB),
by the Department of Community Health (Crime Victims Services
Commission – the Victims of Crime Act Grant), and the United Ways
of Midland and Gladwin counties.

What an amazing year at Shelterhouse! We have celebrated many successes and accomplishments, embarked on new adventures and stayed the course through many challenges.

Last year we answered 2,352 crisis 6+33,&7&a 52% increase over the past two years. In addition to those served through individual or group counseling and advocacy, outreach services continue to be strong with 13,662 individuals reached through prevention education and community awareness presentations last year. We reached another 147,000 people through radio and television messages and interviews.
Other accomplishments this year include:

Volunteers provide child care, court watch, client
transportation, lawn care, painting and building
maintenance. In addition, they also staff our
crisis line and provide assistance to
our business team.

ProgramsDomestic Violence The Domestic Violence Program provides safety planning,
court accompaniment, advocacy, counseling and support
groups and connection with community resources serving
976 individuals in the past year. We provide in-home
advocacy for families in our 11 supportive housing units.
Last year, 150 people stayed in shelter for an average of
38 days.
Children’s Services
Shelterhouse served 220 adolescents and children who
were sexually abused or affected by domestic violence.
They received support to aid recovery and learned self-
awareness, safety skills and empowerment.
Alternatives to Violence Services
This program helps participants recognize and change
violent thinking and behavioral patterns and learn positive

individuals participated in the Alternatives to Violence
Program.
Sexual Assault The Sexual Assault Program includes free services for crisis
intervention, court accompaniment, advocacy, counseling,
therapy groups and medical forensic exams through the
community-based Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)
program. This program served 55 individuals and our
prevention and education programs reached over 14,000

Community Outreach and Prevention
Shelterhouse sponsors, coordinates and hosts many events
during both Domestic Violence Awareness and Sexual
Assault Awareness months, in concert with local churches,
professionals and companies. By reaching out to local
schools, we are able to provide preventive education to over
400 adolescents.
The 100 Men Campaign provided an opportunity
for men to take a stand to be positive role models
and help to end domestic and sexual violence. Financial
support from the program will be used to raise awareness
and fund educational and preventive programs.
Chefs for Shelterhouse allowed local chefs to
demonstrate their culinary skills and their support to end
domestic and sexual violence. The event was held at the
Midland Center for the Arts.
Girls on the Run offered an after school program at 14 different locations in 2013, serving 454 girls. The
program helps build character and increases self esteem,
improves body image and increases physical activity in
'(#"5&'("1!%(&-2'(&%"+5)&%#"3,E&F()&*"1%"+G&6!3G#$+'),&
with the completion of a 5K run (3.1 miles).
Shelterhouse Endowment Fund ensures that services
'1&.#6'#G,&12&.#13)$6)&61$'#$!)&#$'1&'()&2!'!")&7&4)/1$5&
our lifetimes. Thanks to donors and The Herbert H. and
Grace A. Dow Foundation’s four-year, 4 to 1 matching
grant, our endowment continues to grow.
