Another Year, Many Changes

We live in a time of constant change. Smart phones, instant communication and a rapid shrinking of response time cause us to speed up every day. Sometimes it can seem overwhelming as we pay attention to

multiple sources of information. We find one thing that seems to streamline the information we need, but it soon becomes another source demanding attention.

It is in this environment that Hammer provides services to people with disabilities. Our supports often swim against the tide of faster and faster. We provide “high touch” services focused on the individual and his/her needs in the moment. Our staff is trained to be acutely attentive to an individual’s needs. This often requires us to slow way down and pay attention to the small things in life. We are here to support people in their quest to live life to its fullest. This means the individuals we support define how they want to live and the nature of the care they desire. It may mean, at times, that we need to stand up to society’s need for “faster.” Being with a group of people we support, making a meal to share, may not be a model of efficiency. That is not our goal; it is not about being “fast.” Experiencing the joy of learning how to live in community and sharing a meal together is amazing and wonderful. We see their connections and delight of living life on their terms.

While this is true in our daily life at Hammer, the industry we work in is experiencing massive and historic changes

in 2013 and 2014. Both the way waiver rates (that pay for services and programming) are set and the regulations that guide our work (called 245D) changed substantially on January 1st. While these changes have been talked about for over a decade, we never imagined they both would occur at the same time. Some of this change is welcome, and some we are still learning about. It requires a massive amount of work for us to implement. But, we do so gladly while keeping our focus on the daily lives of those we support.

We are pleased to present this 2013 Annual Report. It has been a very good year for Hammer. We had a strong year financially, as well as programmatically. We replaced one of our homes, did many remodeling projects, filled our 10th apartment program, expanded our Customized Support Services and proactively began to implement all the changes that were coming. We did so because of a wildly dedicated staff, amazing volunteers and a committed Board of Directors. Our gratitude knows no bounds as we move ahead … sometimes as rapidly as our world and industry demands, while at other times slow enough to allow us to see the important things in daily life.

Programming Volunteering

The Healthy Living Initiative (HLI) has been an integral part of Hammer’s services since 2011. Our goal of building a sustainable culture of wellness for the individuals we serve and our employees has been well received. From walking groups to cooking classes to partnering with a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm, both staff and those we serve have found numerous ways to focus on staying healthy – physically, mentally, and emotionally. Our new Community Life Coordinator will help organize and improve all HLI efforts. This community-based approach has resulted in some amazing success stories. Kelly, Dana and Katie Jo (pictured) have lost a combined total of 225 pounds!

As we move into summer, we are embracing change. The Advocacy & Volunteer Resources team has been through much transition. Terriann Matejcek accepted the Director position and two additional staff were hired to round out the team. As the political environment changes, we want to ensure our advocacy efforts and resources are proactive and effective. Also, after years of building a successful and robust pool of volunteers, we can focus on these relationships and strengthen our community. Over the next year, our goals include fine-tuning processes for time and cost efficiency, recruiting more high-skilled volunteers and forging community-based, organization-to-organization relationships.

Hammer Travel

We were built on Hammer’s principles of: Respecting Abilities, Reaching for Opportunities and Realizing Dreams. In 2013, Hammer Travel, using these guiding principles, served nearly 300 people with developmental disabilities. Partnerships with organizations throughout the United States, such as North Central Health Care (WI), The Arc of Bristol County (RI and MA) and Highland Friendship Club (MN), allowed for unique travel opportunities for those served by these organizations. Hammer staff collaborated with staff from these organizations to provide the best possible travel experience for each traveler while expanding the reach of Hammer’s mission!

Investing

We celebrate your investment in people with disabilities. Each gift is necessary and influential in the lives of those we serve. Your Healthy Living Initiative contributions allow us to build an organization-wide program focusing on nutrition, fitness and personal wellness while addressing health concerns. Gifts to home improvements make adding an elevator and remodeling a kitchen possible so that individuals can live in their home, no matter the need. Your gifts toward training, education and technology help provide highly trained and qualified caregivers. Each gift is a commitment to the people we serve, helping to provide the highest possible quality of life throughout their lifetimes.
