Who we are...Iowa Sports FoundationThe Iowa Games, a statewide Olympic-style competition, is the most well-known of the Iowa Sports Foundation events. The Iowa Games started as a one-weekend effort in 1987 and now has grown to more than 34,000 participants from all 99 of Iowa’s counties.

• 34,000-plus participants in all Iowa Games events• 217 Net Fest Basketball, Soccer and Volleyball teams• 60 schools in Fish Iowa Games• 36 Iowa communities hosted Iowa Games events

In 2002, the Iowa Sports Foundation Board of Directors saw a need to combat Iowa’s growing obesity problem. Live Healthy Iowa is a fast-growing program which has started many wellness initiatives, including the 10 Week Wellness Challenge. The Live Healthy Iowa initiative is key to ensure Iowa is the healthiest state in the nation.

• 58,000-plus 10 Week Wellness Challenge participants• 100,000 kids engaged in Fall Fitness Day• 248,000 participated in the Live Healthy Iowa initiatives• $4,000 in grants and prizes awarded to schools to purchase exercise and playground equipment

The Iowa Sports Foundation is just in its fourth year of building the Adaptive Sports Iowa (ASI) program. Our mission is to provide statewide leadership in the planning, promotion, education and organization of sports and recreational activities for Iowans with physical disabilities. Compared to the Iowa Games and Live Healthy Iowa, the numbers are smaller, but the enthusiasm and energy around the athletes is electric.

• The Adaptive Sports Iowa RAGBRAI team was recognized as the 2013 Team of the Year.• 60 cyclists and volunteers participated on ASI RAGBRAI team• 30 athletes with disabilities participated in the Winter Ski Experience• Hosted the National Goalball Championships and the National Junior Disability Championships in 2014• Weekly wheelchair basketball and power soccer programs

The Iowa Senior Games were developed to encourage Iowans aged 50+ to continue a health and fitness-oriented lifestyle. Seniors focus is regular exercise but our statewide Olympic-style championship provides a goal and recognition of achievement and effort.

• 2,000 medals are awarded in nearly 30 sports• Iowa is a qualifying event for the National Senior Games• 70+ Iowa athletes competed in the 2013 National Senior Games• Athletes from 73 Iowa counties
