ANNUAL REPORT | DONOR RECOGNITION | FY 2014 (JULY 1, 2013– JUNE 30, 2014)

Page 2: 2013-2014 Annual Report

Throughout our annual report, you will read about our initiatives, programs and services that support our focus areas of education, income and health. In addition, a few years ago, our board voted to add immediate needs to this list as a result of feedback from our investors and community partners. Currently, 30 percent of every dollar invested into the Community Investment Fund is allocated to support immediate needs programs.

In 2013, United Way of North Central Florida implemented a new community investment model. This model uses a three-year funding cycle for agency programs to reach longer-term goals, and changes to a one-year funding cycle for immediate needs. We are currently in year 2 of this process. The 3-year cycle gives agencies more time to successfully implement programs and demonstrate progress in reaching long-term indicators. The shorter timeline for immediate needs allows United Way of North Central Florida more flexibility in responding to immediate community needs, including food and shelter.

When we began the new funding cycle, we also implemented results-based accountability. This allows us to track the results of the programs we fund and hold our partners accountable for the money the community has entrusted to us. Although this process can be quite lengthy and involved, our partners and funders have welcomed the ability this gives them to better understand the impact of their programs!

When your United Way moved to an impact model versus a funding model, it was not a popular decision. We are grateful that the leaders who came before us were forward-thinking and determined to see results. Because of this major change, your United Way continues to rank in the top 9 percent of United Ways throughout the nation for business performance.

We encourage you to read your report cover to cover as we have so much good news to share.

Thank you for your continued support of United Way of North Central Florida. Thank you for having the vision to imagine, inspire and invest with us!

We welcome your feedback!

Sincerely,

Kay AyersChair, Board of Directors

Dana Clayton Interim President & CEO

VITA PROGRAM

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, is an IRS-funded program that provides

free tax preparation in the community for low- to moderate-income households, putting money back in the pockets of local residents.

Our impact in Alachua County

» More than 200 volunteers participated

» Refunded $2,245,468 to the community and saved taxpayers $362,105 in paid fees, for a total impact of $2,609,483

» Refunded an average Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) of $1,631

» 2,020 people filed their taxes through the 2014 VITA program

Why do EITCs matter?

Receipt of larger EITCs is linked to:

» Higher test scores, particularly in math. Larger EITCs are linked to improved test scores in the year of receipt for both elementary and middle school students.

» Higher high school graduation rates. Receiving a larger EITC in childhood increases the likelihood that a student will graduate high school or complete his or her general equivalency diploma (GED).

» Higher college attendance rates. The larger the EITC a child’s family receives, the more likely he or she will enter college by age 19 or 20.

More than 200 volunteers helped low- to moderate- income households file their taxes in Alachua County.

Buchholz High School Academy of Finance

For the 2014 VITA Tax Season, United Way of North Central Florida partnered with the Buchholz High School Academy of Finance to provide a high school student-run community tax site.

» 87 personal income tax students participated, ranging from 9th to 12th grade.

» United Way kicked off this partnership by celebrat-ing Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day at Buchholz High School where special guest U.S. Rep. Ted Yoho, spoke with students and community members about the importance of tax filing.

» $90,643 in tax returns were prepared by the students, generating an estimated $11,880 in free tax services and creating a total community impact of $102,523.

Adopt-A-School program

New to United Way of North Central Florida in 2014, the Adopt-A-School program invites local dentists to provide free dental services to a high-need school in the community.

» Dr. Richard Parent of Parent Dental Group and Drs. Janet Pappas and Patricia Tapley of Pappas & Tapley Orthodontics adopted Archer Elementary and Newberry Elementary, respectively

» 103 of 628 total children were treated by three private dental volunteers through Adopt-A-School

SEAL & SMILE DENTAL PROGRAM

This school-based initiative provides preventative oral health services to second- and sixth-grade students in Alachua County. University of Florida dental students and Santa Fe College dental hygiene students complete an education learning component through volunteering their time and services to provide these oral health services.

Our impact in Alachua County

» 628 children received dental services, including sealants, fluoride varnish treatment, an oral health exam and oral hygiene instruction

» Offered in 14 Alachua County schools

“ The amount of care that was needed within a few miles of the University of Florida College of Dentistry made me question why students and faculty spend so much time and money going overseas for mission trips when we have such a great need for care in our own backyard. If we were able to apply that same amount of time and money used on overseas mission trips to the Alachua area the benefits would be immense.”

READINGPALS

An early literacy initiative, ReadingPals matches volunteers to second- and third-

grade children for a weekly one-hour reading session to improve reading scores and success in school. ReadingPals is made possible through the support of Carol and Barney Barnett, United Way of North Central Florida and the Children’s Movement of Florida. » 170 children served

» 3,000+ volunteer hours given

» 91% of all ReadingPals students achieved a passing grade in Reading

“ It is very rewarding to develop a relationship with a student and see their reading skills improve. The students really bond with their volunteer and are truly excited to spend time with them. The smile that Kenya greeted me with at each session was worth more than the time I volunteered, making every moment worthwhile.”

The Check & Connect Technology Program

» Through the generous $20,000 donation from a private local donor, 47 selected Check & Connect students received laptops

» The laptops helped the students to gain skills and knowledge related to goal setting, Microsoft soft-ware, career exploration and online job applications

CHECK & CONNECT

Aimed at reducing high school drop-out rates and making progress toward gradua-tion, Check & Connect builds relationships with eligible students and their families to improve attendance, engage with learning and invest in their future. » 72 students participated

» 97% of students promoted on time

» 82% of students completed their core course

» 76% of students had improved attendance

» 75% of students improved their behavior

Terrell's Story: Shoot for the Moon

Eastside High School junior and Check & Connect student Terrell Q., has always had an interest in putting things together and taking them apart. As a youth, Terrell wanted to be an astronaut and was more interested in understanding how things worked than he was interested in playing video games. Although he is incredibly bright, he has had some troubles in the past when it came to school. That has all changed since being enrolled in the Check & Connect pro-gram. Terrell recently earned a spot in NASA’s “Build It, and It Will Fly!” program, a collaboration with Santa Fe College Community Outreach, the University of Florida and Kennedy Space Center that resulted in Terrell’s team winning the competition. Participation in this NASA initiative was a life-changing opportunity for Terrell, who has since been invited to work at NASA next summer.

With the Check & Connect program, 47 Alachua county high school students received laptops.

“ Life is much bigger than what we do every day. I feel that each of us are charged with using our gifts to make the world a better place. By working together we can accomplish so much more than what we can do individually. Being a leadership donor to United Way gives me the opportunity to share the gifts I have been blessed with and helps me to be a part of strengthening our community in a very real way.”

– Coleen DeGroff, United Way Leadership Donor and Small Business Partner

BOOK NOOK PROJECT

The Book Nook Project is aimed at increasing reading proficiency in the community through placement of book-shelves in 50 locations in Alachua County accessible to children and families.

Community Impact Partner Agencies are invited to apply for United Way funding through the Community Investment Process. The Community Investment Process is led by a team of community volunteers who use results-driven data to determine how the funds will be invested. The community volunteer team bases its funding decisions on the agencies’ ability to improve on the indicators of at least one strategy under a particular goal.

The United Way of North Central Florida Community Investment Fund is made up of the donations that are NOT designated to individual 501(c)(3) agencies.

Thank you for donating to the Community Investment Fund. You are helping to make North Central Florida a

stronger and safer place to live. You are investing in programs that help your colleagues, friends and neighbors when times get rough. And you’re investing in a trusted organization that provides leadership and vision to address critical long-term issues.

TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY MEMBERS GIFTS OF $10,000 AND ABOVEFrench aristocrat Alexis Charles-Henri Clerel De Tocqueville was 26 years old when he came to America in 1831. As a keen observer of American society, he recognized, applauded and immortalized the voluntary spirit that lives in America’s heart. His observations formed the basis for “Democracy in America,” a book describing this new country and its people.

United Way’s Tocqueville Society was created to honor the goodwill and community leadership that inspired De Tocqueville’s writings more than 175 years ago. The Tocqueville Society honors leaders locally and nationally who exemplify that spirit through their high level of personal giving to United Way.

Our local society is a growing community of individuals and families who make an outstanding difference through influential leadership, outstanding volunteerism and selfless giving. Today, the Tocqueville Society is one of the world’s most prestigious institutions for individuals who are passionate about improving people’s lives and strengthening communities.

United Way donors who give $10,000 or more annually are members of the Tocqueville Society and are recognized both locally and nationally.

United Way of North Central Florida is pleased to present our local Tocqueville Donors and recognize this exemplary level of commitment with deep gratitude and sincere appreciation:
