As February draws to a close, and the many many snowy days are hopefully tapering off (sorry to those who love the snow, I’m a Texas girl!) I look forward to the (slow) arrival of Spring and of course, the many chocolates to be eaten on Easter! March is a month of birthdays in my house, and my poor husband has to buy gifts for our daughter, his mother, my mother, and ME! :-)

This month we say goodbye to the WAC Board 2012 at the AGM on 21 March, and hello to the new Board 2013! I hope you will all come along for the meeting and dessert buffet after. After a a bit of a delayed hand-off, this summer I will say goodbye to you as editor of the WAC on Track and hand over the magazine to our experienced editor and former President Carol Conzelmann!

As well March finds our ladies enjoying nights out and in -- Going out for Greek and staying in for Indian! How could you go wrong - in fact, why not both?! And an Easter crafts workshop for the kiddies! Good stuff happening at the WAC!

For a quick indoor treat this month, try making these chocolate “nests” with the kids!

Happy March everyone!

225g/8oz plain chocolate, broken into pieces2 tbsp golden syrup or honey50g/2oz butter75g/3oz cornflakes 36 mini chocolate eggs

1. Line a 12-hole cupcake tin with paper cases.2. Melt the chocolate, syrup/honey and butter in a bowl set over a pan of gently

simmering water, (do not let the base of the bowl touch the water). Stir the mixture until smooth.Remove the bowl from the heat and gently stir in the cornflakes until all of the cereal is coated in the chocolate.

3. Divide the mixture between the paper cases and press 3 chocolate eggs into the centre of each nest. Chill in the fridge for 1 hour, or until completely set.

President’s Note Carol Conzelmann

Dear WAC friends,

March is a very important month at the WAC. Our Annual General Meeting takes place on THURSDAY, MARCH 21ST. The meeting will begin at 7.30pm and includes reports from the outgoing Board, the election of our Board for the upcoming year, and an open discussion where those present can raise any concerns or suggestions. Finally, once the business part of the evening is complete, we can enjoy a delicious dessert buffet and have a chance to chat.

The AGM is open to all WAC members. Last year turnout was quite low, which is a shame. Please come along if you can and show the outgoing and new board teams your interest in and support for our club.

I’m delighted to report that we now have candidates for all Board positions which is fabulous news. Those standing for election have written a little about themselves for this edition of the WAC on Track. Have a read and find out a bit more about the wonderful team who have volunteered to take care of our Club in the year ahead.

Voting will start on Tuesday, March 5th. Please ensure that you cast your vote to ensure we can elect our new Board. Please see instructions on how to vote under Nom Com news later in this edition.

This is my last President’s report before I step down at the end of March. I’m very happy to know that the WAC will be in very safe hands in the future and I feel very honoured to have been trusted with this job for the past 2 years. I owe a big debt of gratitude to many amazing ladies (and a few men) who have supported me, and I’ll mention some of the things we’ve achieved in my report to the AGM which will be published in next month’s edition of the WAC on Track.

Hello, I'm Sue and I am running for President of the WAC for the coming year. I have really enjoyed my year on the Board as Membership Secretary and look forward to devoting more time this year to keeping the WAC running smoothly and ensuring that all members have plenty of activities and events to keep our children and us busy!

I am originally from the UK but before we moved to Switzerland, my husband Wez and I lived for 2 years in Singapore where I taught in an international school. We've now been here for almost 4 years and I had the luxury of being able to have both my babies in Swiss hospitals! My daughter Isobel is now 3 and a half and is a huge fan of both Lunch Club and the Swiss German Spielgruppe at the WAC. My son Zack is almost 2 and loves Thursday playgroup (especially Snack Time!) He can't wait to follow his big sister up the stairs to "school" with Bettina and Loredana. All the teachers work so hard and have created such a happy learning environment for our children.

The WAC has been a part of our Swiss lives right from the start and the fact that the organisation is kept going by volunteers makes it such a special place. I look forward to doing my part to help both new and old members enjoy their membership and to keeping our club going from strength to strength.

Nice to "see" you at here again. My name is Sima, I am from China, a mama of a 4.5 years old princess.

3 years ago we joined WAC. My daughter Anais started from play group, than pre-school and now explorer class. I started as a stranger,than cooperated manager on business, class representative, and now vice president.We both learnt a lot at here, got a lot of fun and friends at here. WAC helps us to find ourselves and develop ourselves.I am glad to have these chances to help all the members to find the same warm feeling as I have found at here.

WAC is another home for me and my daughter, all the members belong to this family. No matter you are "old" or "new", I hope everybody could enjoy this big family!

I am Swapna Patil living in Uster with my husband, Kedar and my children, Arnav and Aryana. I have been in Switzerland (and with the WAC) for 6 years. My kids have enjoyed the playgroups, pre-

school and various classes that the WAC offers. I have previously volunteered as the Swim Representative, Class Rep, done library shifts and been the Special Events Chairperson. I am looking forward to take over my responsibilities as a Secretary with the new WAC Board.

Dear WAC Member,

The WAC has been a wonderful place for me to meet & learn lots from English speaking people from around the world. I moved from California to Switzerland with my Swiss husband & children 4 years ago. Soon after that I started volunteering at the WAC Library & have never left it. This year I am branching out into volunteering for Treasurer. I have to admit that I do not hold a degree in accounting or finance (My degree was in Medicine.) but I love learning new things.

I have learned lots about marketing, publicity & budgeting from being Library Chairperson these last 2 years. These three things combined with the hard work of our wonderful Library Volunteers have quadrupled Library income. So now we can buy many Adult & Children DVD’s as new releases --- which in turn has made the Library very popular. Great children & adult books have been donated by the bagful each week. (Thank you to all the kind donors!) It has been so rewarding to see the Library become such a happening place. And in the coming year, I look forward to learning lots in the job as Treasurer.

Charlotte moved to Switzerland from London with her husband 4 years ago. They are both English and have 3 children who have regularly attended the WAC for 3 years; Betsy aged 7, Lola aged 5 and Zak aged 3.

Charlotte is looking forward to being able to contribute to the WAC on the Board in the Marketing position. Before leaving London she worked at L'Oreal in the marketing department and was a marketing manager at Imperial College London. She also completed a post-grad course in marketing whilst pregnant with Betsy.

Hello, my name is Clare Taylor and I have put my name forward to stand as the new Membership Chairperson. I moved to Switzerland from the UK at the end of August last year, with my husband Simon and our two children. My daughter Phoebe is three and a half and my son Ellis has just turned two. We live in Uster, luckily just a short walk from the WAC. I worked for Hertfordshire Constabulary before moving here but now enjoy being a full time mum. In my rare spare time, I love to bake and decorate cupcakes and have a weakness for Emma Bridgewater pottery!

We joined the WAC before even relocating to Switzerland and I can’t begin to describe how much being a part of the WAC has helped us settle into life here. The WAC is a great way to meet lots of people and make new friends quickly. We go to the Rockin’ Rascals playgroup on a Thursday and Phoebe attends the Learning Tree Spielgruppe twice a week. I’ve also even had a glimpse of a social life with the WAC Dinner Club trips to local restaurants!

I am excited about the prospect of being part of the new team. The WAC has so much to offer to families and I look forward to the opportunity of sharing this information with new members.

Hello, Let me introduce myself! My names Louise, I have three beautiful girls (2, 4 and 8) and moved to Switzerland last April with my husband for his job.I became a member of the WAC soon after moving here, attending Toddler groups with my youngest and putting my middle daughter in the Learning Tree for a few sessions a week.Some of you may know that I have put my name forward to be events co-ordinator on the Board for the next coming year which I am very excited about.Before moving here to Switzerland I helped lead a Volunteer group to raise money and awareness of our local children's centre, running weekly meet ups, coffees, crafts clubs and the odd fundraiser - hosting our very own Autumn Watch event which I personally organised.I have been involved in my children's schools, as a member of the PTA and as class representative, organising social events for the children and sometimes just for the grown ups too!As for hobbies, I'm very into my crafts and baking, I tend to throw myself into anything creative! I also enjoy reading, and the odd glass of wine with a good movie!I’m hoping that this experience will help me with all I need to take on the job and bring some new enthusiasm into all future events at the WAC!

I look forward to meeting more of you throughout the next year and to being part of the WAC team!

Dear WAC Friends,

The next WAC Annual General Meeting (AGM) is just around the corner and I hope to see familiar faces, along with new faces, as we thank those who have given their time to organize the various WAC activities over the past year. The WAC’s continued success is measurable in the growing number of playgroup participants, preschoolers enrolled at LTCS, and the array of classes offered. What is harder to measure is what it feels like to be part of a team. Can you quantify inspiration? Well, if you’ve met Carol Conzelmann, the current WAC President, you know how important good leadership is for the WAC. Carol has served the WAC as President of the Board of Trustees for the last two years. I know I speak for many when I say, “thank you Carol!” Thank you for your tireless dedication to the WAC, for your leadership, and for your inspirational attitude. I consider Carol not only a great leader, but a wonderful friend and fellow WAC member.

Carol's inspirational leadership is well summarized by the following quote, from Douglas MacArthur,

“A true leader has the conSidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. [S]he does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent.”

While Carol will be retiring from serving as WAC President, she will still be involved with the WAC as the Publications Chair and will continue to volunteer her time. Did you expect anything less?

Welcome back! Hope you all enjoyed the Ski holidays!

We have a lot to look forward to this month.

This month we will start having our class pictures taken. The proposed schedule is March 18-22 for all the Pre School classes and the week of April 8-12 for all the afternoon classes. If there are any changes, we will post it on the bulletin boards and outside the classroom doors. For those of you who do not allow class pictures to be taken, we ask you to please explain it to your children so that they do not feel left out. If you have changed your mind and would like class pictures, please let me know. We thank the Kristina (PTA) for organizing this and Irina for volunteering to take the pictures for us.

On March 20, we will have an Usborne book sale! It will take place the whole day. Please have a look at all their new books.

Another important date is March 21 when we will have our AGM and vote in the new Board. We take this opportunity to thank the present Board for all their support this past year. We appreciate all you have done for us. Please do come and join us to show our gratitude and support for the ‘old’ and ‘new’ Board – without them your Club and School would not be running.

And now for a preview of what we will have in April.

We are planning to offer our Spring Vacation Program again this year to be held from April 22 - 26. More information and the sign up sheets will be put up soon on the bulletin boards.

We will also be holding our Parent teacher conferences on the week of April 15-19. The RW classes may be holding them on two Wednesdays, April 11 and 18. Please look out for the signup sheets for your child’s respective classes. They will be put up in April outside the classroom doors.

Please note that our Easter Break this year does not coincide with our Spring break. Easter break is from Friday, March 29 – Monday, April 1. We have school after that until Friday, April 19 and then we are off for the Spring holidays!

Dear WAC Members,

& There are lots of new releases coming out in March:

Argo --- based on the true story of how the CIA rescued a bunch of Americans in the Middle East by pretending to be a movie crew. It is a 2013 Oscar Best Movie Nominee.

Skyfall --- The latest James Bond 007 action movie. Rumor has it that it is one of the better Bond films.

Anna Karenina --- Tolstoy’s tragic tale of forbidden love told with sumptuous costumes & sets.

Tinker Bell’s Secret of the Wings --- Tinker Bell finds out that she has a twin --- a frost fairy.

Then there are other oldies but goodies that have been added to our collection (or replaced an old damaged DVD): Spy Kids 1, Hoodwinked, Hoodwinked Too, and Downtown Abbey Season 2 (by request).

& Also check out the new books for kids: Nicholas St. North & the Nightmare King and E. Aster Bunnymund. Both these books provide the character basis for the upcoming new DVD release, “Rise of the Guardians” (coming out in the WAC in May). There is also a new biography about Marie Curie --- the only woman to win the Nobel Prize twice!

My tip this month is simply for WAC members to pass on their appreciation. I want to personally pass on my heartfelt thanks to our outgoing president Carol Conzelmann. She and her board have done an outstanding job the last 2 years.

Whilst the office of president is rewarding, the job is by no means easy. Besides the huge responsibility, along with many important decisions, that rest on the president’s shoulders (all whilst just “volunteering”) there are countless satisfying moments especially when the members express their gratitude and appreciation.

Carol, to your and your team (i.e. especially to the ones leaving office), thank you for doing a wonderful job! We wish you well as you move on to new things.

So my tip, or even challenge, for you WAC members this month is just to stop and say a simple thanks to all the many volunteers at the WAC. When you are at the library, say thanks to the on-duty librarian. When you see a playgroup leader wiping down crumbs for the umpteenth time, say thanks. When you see someone taking out the garbage, or taking a load of dirty laundry home, just say thanks! Even the editor of our interesting WAC on Track – thanks! Etc. etc. etc. Without all these many incredible people, the WAC would just about fall apart!

Sharon’s Tips


In January the Readers Gone WACky read Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. Members found the novel a challenging, but rewarding, reading selection. The book is made up of six tales: two in the past, two in the present and two in the future. Five of the tales are interrupted and continued in reverse order after the uninterrupted middle section. The abrupt transitions were difficult, and some readers skipped straight to the continuing story. Readers agreed, however, that the innovative structure was a big part of the literary masterpiece.

The stories include: a notary crossing the Pacific in the 1850’s, a questionable musician in 1930’s Belgium, an investigative reporter in San Francisco 1970’s, an unsuccessful British publisher unwillingly confined to a nursing home in current time, a clone who discovers hidden truths about the future society she lives in, and a primitive, future society on Hawaii.

Readers enjoyed the story about the composer the most and the clone the least. We noted that the few women who were portrayed the in the book were smart and brave. Members had fun analyzing and inferring meaning from the invented language in some sections. Other parts of the book featured authentic but antiquated language. We noted that none of the details of the book were random and that it could be analyzed on many levels. Although the writing, with all the many styles and varied language, was fantastic, the novel altogether is almost overwhelming.

Members struggled to pin down the message of the book and spent some time discussing the meaning of the title. After the watching the trailer for the movie, readers also discussed how the book could be successfully translated to the screen. In conclusion, Cloud Atlas was an ideal book for a book club to discuss, giving the members a forum to review the complexities of the work.

This month in Girls Club we worked on our Woodworking badge. The girls learned all about tools as they got to make their own bat house! Cutting with a hand saw, scoring, gluing, and screwing abound. Many thanks to Mike Van Eerd for all his help and tools and to Jessica Bachofen who was kind enough to help out at last minutes notice. In addition to making bat houses the girls shared with each other some very interesting bat facts. Did you know bats use their modified thumb-claw for climbing? And that the biggest bats wing span is 1.7 meters, almost as tall as an average person! Different bats eat different things. Some eat fruit, a few do in fact drink blood but most eat insects.

Having a colony of bats nearby is a great way to naturally control some of the mosquito population. Reports say one bat can eat as many as 600 mosquitoes in an hour! In the bat house that we made at girls club as many as 35 (maybe more) could easily fit inside, bats like to snuggle! Our bat topic will continue next month as we work on our Wildlife badge.

Calling all new members!

Coming along to a New Members' Breakfast is a great way to start your membership of the WAC. At these coffee mornings, we get together to discuss all the ways that the WAC can help and support you and make sure you know all the different activities that we offer, both for children and adults. It's a good idea to try and make it to one of these regular meetings within your first few months of joining up, not least because you then have the chance to meet other new members.

In January, Laxmi, Frances, Queen, Susanne and Rebecca came along to meet each other and to have a good look around the WAC. We talked about our children (of course!) and the classes they are joining in. This ranged from ballet to pre-school to the weekly drop-in playgroups.Thanks, too, to the new members who have volunteered to help with some of those little tasks that help keep us running smoothly. This includes photocopying the WAC on Track, tidying up the kitchen, doing a shift in the library and helping with the Kids' Discos. Thanks everyone and welcome to the WAC!

The WAC Dinner Club met last in January at the Han Mongolian Barbecue here in Uster. The evening was again a great success and it was good to see some new faces to the WAC. The 9

ladies who attended all enjoyed the varied all you can eat buffet and some sampled their Mongolian Beers too!

The next Dinner Club will take place on Thursday 4th April

with drinks from 7.30pm and food at 8pm.
