1.

Is it June yet? Summer at Sandy Spring is entering its 20th year as a camp and the Auxiliary Programs Staff is working very hard to bring you an exciting summer for 2012!

Please browse this brochure to check out all of our great programs. We remain focused on our Creative Company and Skills and Thrills programs, and we are dedicated to bringing you an even better aquatics program, with more opportunities for swimming. We are also thrilled to continue our morning academics program, staffed with enthusiastic teachers who are excited to keep your child’s brain active. To sharpen all of our camp offerings and better serve our campers, we’ve made a few changes. Our Friends Camp will see the addition of a new grade of campers, the rising 6th graders. Our middle school Sports Academy has combined with Springwood Adventures to create an energy-packed program with more activities such as Tae Kwon Do and Rock Climbing. We have strengthened our communications infrastructure, expanded our programs, and streamlined our registration process. These changes will allow us to continue to offer flexibility, value, and a one-stop shop for your summer camp experience. We are dedicated to providing our campers with lifelong experiences and memories. As summer approaches, please feel free to stop by, give us a call or send an email, and we will be happy to answer any questions or provide you with any information you may need. Thank you and we look forward to an amazing summer! Brittney Rohrs Assistant Director of Auxiliary Programs, Camp Director

About Sandy Spring Friends school

Why Summer At Sandy Spring?

Summer at Sandy Spring takes place on the 140-acre wooded campus of the Sandy Spring Friends School. Sandy Spring Friends School (SSFS) has been an educational institution for 50 years. SSFS is a Pre-Kindergarten through 12th Grade (ages 4 through 18) college preparatory day school for about 575 boys and girls with an optional boarding program in the Upper School. Founded in 1961, SSFS is located in the historic Quaker community of Sandy Spring in the heart of Montgomery County, Maryland, only 30 minutes from Baltimore and Washington, DC. The school offers a diverse student body, strong academics that include Advanced Placement courses in the Upper School, arts, athletic programs, and an emphasis on traditional Quaker values. The school also has several state-of-the art performance spaces, athletic fields and courts, and science facilities.

Summer at Sandy Spring (formerly Summer Friends Day Camps) was founded in 1992 at Sandy Spring Friends School (SSFS) as a service to SSFS faculty and families, providing a unique summer experience grounded in Quaker values. The camp goals were to engage in exploration, learning, friendship, and summer-time fun. These core values remain, even as our program has adapted to the needs of our busy families. Come join us and see all the fun we’re having!

Intermediate and Senior Campers help build their own schedules by selecting different workshops! Most workshops are two weeks in duration. Campers in Senior CamP must choose AM and PM workshops that equal the number of weeks for which they are enrolled (i.e., if the camper is enrolled for weeks 1–4, the camper must choose a total of two morning and two afternoon workshops). Campers in intermediate CamP need to choose one workshop that equals the number of weeks for which they are enrolled (i.e., if the camper is enrolled for weeks 1–4, the camper must choose a total of two workshops) Classes may be cancelled based on enrollment. Please sign up for different workshops to experience our camp’s many offerings!

Our Academics program runs Monday through Friday mornings from 9 am to 11 am. It is designed to provide children with both practice and enrichment in core academic subjects. The goal is to foster a love of learning while helping students master and move beyond important grade-level skills. Students are taught in small groups based on ability. We require a copy of each camper’s most recent report card and a Parent Educational Assessment that the Camp Office will provide. Instructors also perform assessments on the first day. All academic campers enjoy the following:

reading rainbowThese fun-filled reading sessions reinforce a variety of important skills, ranging from decoding words and building vocabulary to identifying the key elements in a story and understanding the difference between a main idea and supporting details in written work. Instructors tailor developmentally appropriate learning strategies to each student’s level of ability. Children are immersed in literature that naturally increases their enthusiasm for reading.

Writers’ WorkshopThese intensive sessions focus on five key aspects of the writing process: brainstorming, outlining, writing a first draft, editing, and publishing. Children engage in both expository and creative writing assignments. Younger students dictate their thoughts and ideas to the teacher to discover how spoken words can be seen on paper; older students build on existing skills to improve their writing mechanics and ability to express thoughts and ideas on paper.

mindful mathThese sessions focus mainly on helping children understand mathematical concepts, work with numbers and operations, and develop reasoning and problem-solving skills. Emphasis is placed on ”drill and skill” and problem-solving experiences customized to different learning styles.

This two-week adventure includes an overnight trip on each Thursday, first in the rocks of West Virginia and then alongside the waves of the Atlantic Ocean! Our campers will begin in our own Springwood Adventures ropes course where they will learn to cooperate with and trust their fellow campers. After a day of mountain biking and a day of white water canoeing, they will travel to West Virginia for an overnight rock climbing trip! The second week begins with a day of kayaking in the Chesapeake Bay, continues with sailing and caving, and concludes with two days on the shores of the Atlantic, where our campers will spend the days surfing, and the evening around a campfire sharing their stories of adventure from the past two weeks!

The CIT (Counselor In Training) Program is designed for individuals who are interested in being summer camp counselors or aspire to work as professionals in the education field. CITs receive leadership training and learn what it’s like to work within a team. This year we are launching a new four-week-long program that will allow our CITs to obtain certificates of completion, gain credentials and become certified in CPR and First Aid.

Grades 9–12

Page 17: 2012SummerBrochure

This year, our CITs will have the opportunity to gain valuable training. The skills they learn can serve them well both in the camp setting and in other employment environments. Each session, CITs will spend time in individual programs as counselors and then return to their peers to discuss what they have learned. They will also receive instruction in different skill areas. CITs will learn how to write a resume and will participate in a mock interview. The four-week camp will end with a fun-filled field trip! It is possible to gain community service hours towards high school graduation during this program, but CITs must check with their individual schools before camp begins.
