Corporate sponsorships are go-ing to the dogs in New YorkCity.
The Department of Parksand Recreation, in conjunctionwith media marketing behe-moth IMG Consulting, is rollingout a partnership program thatlets corporations put theirnames on the city’s dog runs.
After the deadline was ex-tended, interested companiesnow have until Sept. 14 to ap-ply for the opportunity to staketheir claim on any one of the 55dog runs across the five bor-oughs.
Corporate sponsors wouldhave the right to place theirbrand or logo on signs andequipment like benches, andthe opportunity to host eventsat the dog runs.
But this money-raisingscheme puts City Hall in thedoghouse with some pet own-ers who are annoyed that theparks have become only the lat-est target of advertising cam-paigns.
“Billboards are a form of vi-sual pollution,” said DougWeiss, 49, speaking while hisdog, Moose, ran at the dog runat Sternberg Park in Williams-burg on Thursday evening. “Be-sides, this is where we come toget away from all of that, wherewe come just to be.”
“When you go to a park, youare already bombarded with anincredible amount of ads,” Ge-offrey Croft, founder of NYCPark Advocates, told Metro.“And the main reason you go tothe park is to avoid that.”
The city is hoping to pull$1.5 million in revenue fromthe project, which will go to-ward the general fund, accord-ing to the New York City Inde-pendent Budget Office. Accord-ing to city officials, there is noset asking price for sponsor-ships.
“By raising revenue, it’s away to offset budget cuts,” saidDoug Turetsky, chief of staff forthe city’s Independent BudgetOffice. “Therefore, more mon-ey will be available for parksand other city programs.”
It will be up to the city parksdepartment to approve newsponsored signs at dog runs.While the city has yet to statelimitations on the size of thesignage, a mayoral spokes-woman insisted the new addi-tions would not interfere withthe aesthetic of the park.
“If you look at everythingwe do with corporate sponsors... we are not interested in hav-ing the parks covered in logos,”said mayoral spokeswomanJulie Wood.

Police on Friday confiscated al-ligators, snakes and other exot-ic pets illegally being kept in apublic housing unit in CrownHeights, Brooklyn.
The NYPD said it cameacross the animals at theWeeksville Houses on DeanStreet while executing an unre-lated search warrant.
Animal Care & Control wasthen called in to remove oneboa constrictor, five pythons,two bearded dragons, two alli-gators, a gecko, a scorpion anda tarantula.
It is against New York CityHousing Authority rules tohave these pets, but no arrestswere made, according to police.
“Most of the animals re-
moved were illegal,” saidRichard Gentles, a spokesmanwith Animal Care & Control.“They have since been placedwith an [organization] that spe-cializes in their care.”
According to the ASPCA,keeping exotic pets is “bad forthe animals, bad for us and badfor the environment.”

Officials from SilversteinProperties, named after devel-oper Larry Silverstein, weredemonstrating the progressthat has been achieved in rede-veloping Ground Zero beforetomorrow’s 11-year anniver-sary of the Sept. 11, 2001, at-tacks.
Two of Silverstein’s sky-scrapers still have no comple-tion date after political infight-ing and clashes over finance,designs and security addedyears to the rebuilding.

The family and friends of aman accidentally shot andkilled by a police officer whileescaping a burglary early Fridaymorning reeled yesterday at hisdeath.
The incident happenedaround 2 a.m. Friday in theMorrisania section of theBronx.
Witnesses told the NewYork Daily News that ReynaldoCuevas, 20, was trying to es-cape a robbery at Nathalie Deli& Grocery when he was shot bypolice. Cuevas worked in thebodega, which is owned by hisuncle.
“Why would they do this tohim?” family friend MaricelaRodriguez, 41, told the DailyNews. “He was just an innocentkid.”
The nightmare started whenthree men entered as the storewas closing. Once inside, thegunman, wearing a ski mask,ordered the store’s night man-ager, Felix Mora, and Cuevas tolie on the floor. The gunman al-so struck Mora in the back ofhis head with his gun, whichwas unloaded, according toNYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly.
As the gunman wentthrough the victim’s pockets,his two accomplices went be-hind the counter and began tofill a backpack with cash, ciga-rettes and lottery tickets. Justthen, the cops arrived in re-sponse to a 911 call.
The three men fled to theback of the store and the base-ment as the police arrived. Thisgave Mora and Cuevas thechance to get up from the floor
and flee outside, according topolice.
An officer with his gundrawn was waiting outsidewhen Mora exited, followed byCuevas, who ran full speed intothe officer, Kelly said.
“The two became entangled,at which point we believe the
officer accidentally dischargedhis weapon, with one round en-tering Mr. Cuevas’ left shoul-der,” said Kelly.
Cuevas was rushed by am-bulance to St. Barnabas hospi-tal, but he died.
“I want to extend my condo-lences to the Cuevas family fortheir loss,” said Kelly. “Theevents transpired in a matter ofseconds, and the collision be-tween Mr. Cuevas and the offi-cer in split seconds. Mr. Cuevas,in an understandable panic toget away from the gunman asfast as possible, ran straight in-to the officer.”
The robbers were arrestedafter a standoff with police.

Electricianbusted overmassive weedshipmentASTORIA. An electrician atKaufman Studios inAstoria, Queens, was arrest-ed Thursday after buildingsecurity intercepted twolarge cardboard boxes filledwith pot that wereaddressed to him.
The boxes were filledwith about 10 pounds ofmarijuana packed inside,police said.
The electrician, LowellSchulman, 53, of Williams-
burg, Brooklyn, told cops hewas expecting a marijuanadelivery, but just a smalleramount of the drug. He saidhe thought the boxes wouldalso contain books andcologne, according to theNew York Post.
He was also allegedlyfound with bags of crack-cocaine in his pocket.

Tropical Storm Leslie churned in the Atlantic yesterday.
A tropical storm warning remained in effect across Bermuda,where forecasters warned hazardous surf and rip currentswere expected to continue through today. Most flights in andout of Bermuda were canceled yesterday, and bus and ferryservices were suspended. REUTERS
The key to chaos is the poeticallynamed “butterfly effect,” which is aslight change in a chaotic systemdrastically effecting what happens inthe long run. Weather is an example
of a chaotic system. A shift in wind as subtleas air passing around a butterfly’s wings cantrigger the development of a hurricane weekslater, on the other side of Earth.
Your B.S. meter may be off the charts. Butbefore you dismiss the idea, consider football,a chaotic American pastime.
Like the weather, football is chaotic. Onedetail, one step can alter the outcome of thegame, the season, the franchise and people’slives for generations.
If Drew Bledsoe stepped out of bounds toavoid a season-ending hit in 2001, second-string quarterback Tom Brady would have remained sidelined. A single step changedcareers, contracts, Super Bowl wins,
retirement plans, etc. This is the essence ofchaotic systems: two slightly different startingpoints result in completely differentoutcomes.
Order and chaos are even in atoms.The players, ball and field are likeelectrons, photons and space. Thenucleus and atoms are connected byforces like players’ movement
connected by the rules of the game. Similar to free will causing unpredictable
behavior in humans, exact movement ofindividual particles in an atom cannot bemeasured or predicted. The laws of naturedon’t allow it, resulting in a fundamental linkbetween chaos and order.
Stirring cream into coffee causes a spiralpattern to emerge while the motion ofmolecules is turbulent. The same pattern incoffee can be seen in a hurricane, eventhough the movement of air is unpredictable.The spiral pattern even shows up in thegalaxy we live in, composed of billions ofstars, planets, dark matter and dust.

Survey: Smartphones ease stress for mothersYoga, deep breathing and wineare just a few of the manyways to make life less stressful.But this time of year, smart-phones get the credit for beingthe best stress-reliever — atleast, for moms of school-agedchildren.
A recent survey shows that85 percent of moms say “theirsmartphone definitely easesthe back-to-school strain, mak-ing this time of year less stress-ful overall.”
Moms of all ages said theirphones (whether basic orsmart) ease their stress duringthis time of year: 89 percentyounger than 35 vs. 85 percent35-44 vs. 83 percent older than45.
But the back-to-school sea-son isn’t the only time momsare glad to have their handysmartphones — nearly nine in10 smartphone-owning moth-ers of school-aged kids (87 per-cent) admitted that having asmartphone has made being amother, in general, easier forthem.
This information comes
from a survey called “Moms GoBack-To-School with Mobile”by the Interactive AdvertisingBureau and Meredith’s ParentsNetwork, a parenthood mediacompany that includes Parentsand American Baby.
“Back-to-school is thebusiest and most stressful timeof year for moms — and now,
more than ever before, Millen-nial moms are using theirsmartphones to help maketheir lives run smoother,”Carey Witmer, executive vicepresident of Meredith ParentsNetwork, said in a statement.“They pursue the informationthey want and need, every-where they go, every time ofthe day.”
The survey also unveiled atrend regarding “mobile-in-tense” moms. It’s often momsof preschool-aged childrenwho are quick to take out theircamera phones to snap a pic oftheir child (56 percent), moreso than mothers of elementary(44 percent) and high schoolkids (33 percent).

On ‘The Story of Light,’ legendary guitarist Steve Vaiexplores some strange and beautiful six-stringed terrainThe first item on Steve Vai’s CVis “stunt guitarist,” a title givento him at age 19 by avant-gardemaestro Frank Zappa, who hadenlisted the prodigious youngguitar wiz right out of college(Berklee, natch) to play some“impossible guitar parts.” Now,with the release “The Story ofLight,” Vai is three illustriousdecades down the road. Whileguitar parts remain impossibleto the lay-fingered, the charla-tan stunting of youth has clear-ly evolved into legitimate mira-cle-working, as “Light” revealsa careful, if not vibrantly color-ful, composer.
“My fans can be really polar-ized,” says Vai, “because someof them are very interested inhaving me just play guitar orheavy-rock instrumental songs,and some of them really likethe dense compositional stuff,and some of them like the vo-cal ballads.”
Not a man to disappoint, Vaioffers all options on “Light.”Moments in Celtic ballad “Mul-lach A’tSi” have the featherytouch of a grandmother’s lulla-by. A new kind of treat,“Creamsicle Sunset” is all glim-mering, woozy sweetness.
To dismiss this album as ‘in-strumental rock guitar’ is to saythat Charlie’s visit to theChocolate Factory is about a kidwho goes to a manufacturingplant. There’s a lot of tasty can-dy here for those who are will-ing to explore.

Startup profile: The indie cafe
At first glance, it mayappear that thecafe/coffee-shop busi-ness is approaching a
point of maximum saturationin Northeastern cities. Not so,says Francisco J. Migoya, au-thor of “The Modern Cafe,”one of the seminal books onthe business.
“There are an enormousamount of cafes and coffeeshops that aren’t as good asthey could be. Many of theseplaces will outsource a lot oftheir products. Sometimes, allthey think about is coffee, andtheir pastries are made in afactory somewhere,” saysMigoya, who also teaches atthe Culinary Institute ofAmerica. “In New York Citythere are maybe between sev-en and 10 very good cafes,”
Migoya adds. “So for some-body with a little bit of capital,who makes sure they’re offer-ing fresh, quality products, it’sa really great business to bein.”
Longtime barista BrittneyLewis noticed a dearth of cof-fee quality in her Philadelphianeighborhood and, more im-portantly, a lack of positivecommunity spaces.
In 2010 Leotah’s Place Cof-feehouse opened its doors inthe Kensington section of thecity. But Lewis quickly realizedshe had to upgrade her foodofferings if Leotah’s was goingto survive.
“When I started, all I reallyhad in my mind was coffee: di-rect-trade coffee. It’s organic. Iknow the farmer. I know theroaster. And that’s great, but
that’s all I had,” says Lewis.“Once I got in the space, mycustomers demanded morefood and higher-quality food.”
Coffee still is the bread andbutter at Leotah’s. Lewis esti-mates that about 75 percent ofher profit is strictly on dripcoffee and lattes. But the foodguarantees a steady flow ofcustomers.
“It’s a great business be-
cause the bar has been set fair-ly low,” says Migoya. “So if youcare about making a superbcup of coffee — if you careabout simple, great, freshbread — it’s not that tough aclimb to offer the customersomething a little more thanwhat they were expecting.”

There’s a fine line be-tween helping othersand being a people-pleaser, and mistaking
one for the other can be hugelydetrimental. When we put oth-ers’ needs before our own, wedeplete our energy — whichcan lead to depression, physicalillness and feeling over-whelmed. People-pleasing alsocan become so ingrained that itcreates a victim mentality in us:People who give too much aresusceptible to being taken ad-vantage of, and then resent-ment sets in. If you’ve felt thatresentment, you might thinkit’s directed at others. Yet, un-derneath it is resentment to-ward yourself, for giving awayyour power. If you’re a people-pleaser, chances are that that
behavior stems from your owninsecurities. We can seek asense of self-worth in our abili-ty to take care of others.
Becoming aware of this be-havior is the first step to heal-ing it. If you think you’re some-one who overly people-pleases,ask yourself the following:
What am I trying to get byoverly giving?
What would happen if Istopped putting others first?
Answer these questionshonestly and fearlessly,and see what feelingscome up for you. As you
review your answers, you’llfind that hidden beneath yourdesire to serve others is a deepdesire to feel good enough. Get-ting truthful with yourselfabout your need to people-please will help you begin tochange the behavior.
Next, become conscious ofputting yourself first. Dr. Chris-
tiane Northrup, a contempo-rary wellness pioneer, says, “Ifyou don’t fill your own cup upfirst, you’ll have nothing togive.” Self-indulgence is a radi-cal act of self-care. At least oncethis week, do something kindfor yourself. You don’t have tospend money — bubble bathsand movie marathons count.This may feel uncomfortable inthe beginning, but it’s impor-tant to create a new pattern oftaking care of yourself first.
Lastly, start to create bound-aries. If you’re a people-pleaser,it’s likely that folks have cometo expect a lot from you. Startsharing with your friends andfamily members your desire totake care of yourself first. Let-ting others in on your shiftswill help them help you.

The long-anticipated debut ofthe Wildcat looked more likethe Mildcat.
Talked about ad nauseamsince a March trade sent TimTebow to the Jets, the Wildcatoffense was supposed to be anunpredictable new wrinkle inthe Jets’ arsenal. Instead, theWildcat was tame at best inthe Jets’ 48-28 season-openingwin over the Bills.
Tebow didn’t throw a singlepass and had five rushes for 11yards in running the scheme.
“I was able to go in thereand do some good things. Ob-viously we’d like to have a bigplay in there,” Tebow said.“But I felt like we had somegood looks and will just con-tinue to get better at it.”
The real star of the after-noon wasn’t Tebow but start-ing quarterback MarkSanchez. After a rough start tothe game when he threw aninterception on the openingdrive, Sanchez settled down togo 19-of-27 for 266 yards andthree touchdowns.
“He definitely turned it ontoday,” said wide receiver Jere-my Kerley, who caught
Sanchez’s first touchdownpass of the day. “There’s al-ways a big target on Mark’sback and I think he likes it.He’s a guy we trust and knowwhat he’s capable of eachweek. He showed it today.”
Last week, wide receiverSantonio Holmes claimed thatSanchez was “unsettled” bythe trade for Tebow, but theJets’ starter looked anything
but. In fact, he seemed tothrive in the dual-quarterbackset-up.
