Dong Yue Village “Tai Ya Er” was formerly known as Iyu, it was once well known for its production of the valuable herb “Taiwan Jewel Orchid”. There were originally two villages during the period of Japanese occupation, and because the integration of administration and

environmental management worked well, these two villages were merged in 1942 and became the Dong Yue Village. Today, even though the Dong Yue Village only has approximately 169 households and a population of about 600, the tribe has made significant achievements, developed a good education system and created a variety of jobs such as intellectual, farming, crafting and merchandising. The road system of Dong Yue Village is also well developed, the eastern railway and SuHua Highway that pass through the village center make it more convenient and easy access to all other regions in Taiwan. Most people live very simple life in this town.

The village is situated in a place that offers breathtaking view of unique beauty as well as panoramic sea and mountain views. Nan Ao Bay, one of the best spots in this place, is known for its spectacular views and aqua blue seawater. It is a famous spot for the villagers to have a picnic, barbecue and swim. Not far away from the bay, there’s a port called “Fen Niao Lin”, a fishing port and busy fish market used by the villagers of Dong Yue Village and “Dong Ao Li”. Most of the fishing boats set out in the early morning and come back one after another at sunset and immediately begin auctioning off their fresh catches making the normally quiet port turn into a bustling fish market. When friends and relatives come and visit this village during the high fishing season (April to June), they will receive the best souvenir, a flying fish from the villagers which is why the village is also known as “Flying Fish Village”.

Stars, diehards, and pilgrims of all stripes often stop at one spot on the coast highway between Su'ao and Hualian: Jianhua Ice in Nan'ao. Founded in 1953, Jianhua's big draw is

its incredibly flavorful ice, made with its “maiden”, vintage-1950s, now rightfully antique ice machine. Jianhua Ice also benefits from a festive atmosphere because many local Atayal are good friends with the owner and have adopted the shop as a meeting spot.

The founder of Jianhua Ice was a student who migrated to Taiwan with the Republic of China government in the 1940s. Assigned to a job at the Forestry Bureau in Nan'ao, he later opened up shop to sell popsicles, the vintage kind. Later, as fate would have it, he handed the shop off to Mr. Liu Jün, father-in-law of current owner Mr. Lin Laifu (Lim Laihok).

Over time, the selection at Jianhua Ice has expanded and evolved into the current array of offerings. The shop makes its ice using a simple, straightforward process. First, pure ice is mixed with sugar and natural flavors. This mixture is then fed into the ice machine, which takes care of the rest and churns out a fine, snow-white ice. Whether because of the quality of the local water, or because the folks at Jianhua Ice have a way with their stalwart ice machine, the ice here is exceptionally refreshing and clean-tasting; fine, but not gloopy, with a texture somewhere between “snow ice” and oldschool “babu” ice cream. Popular flavors include the Custard, Redbean, and Trichrome; the Original remains king of the hill. Regulars often grab a few extra orders of the Original on their way out so that they can enjoy a quick dish of Jianhua Ice at home anytime, perhaps with some passionfruit or some lemon juice or whatever topping the heart desires.

Nanao Atayal Cultural Museum is located on Nanao Street behind Nan-Ao also connected to Nan-Ao Township Library by a corridor.

• The museum pairs Atayal wickerwork, jaw harps, granary model, and traditional utensils with old pictures, maps, and Nan-Ao’s major events to present the Atayal tribe’s distinctive culture. There is also an exhibit devoted to the famous story of Sa-Yuen. A flora and fauna specimen section is available, displaying models of wild boars, flying squirrels, and Formosan macaques. An entire section is dedicated to the famous figures of Nan-Ao, and includes a memorial to the hundred-year-old national treasure, Atayal witch doctor Chen Tsai-Jiao.

• Always Be Atayal There was a young Atayal warrior from Nan-ao. One day he would go into the mountains to hunt, wearing lubu and the sword that his father gave him on his chest, with heroic ambition flowing in his blood. There was no stag horn or wild boar teeth on his rattan-woven hat yet, but what he caarried on his back was bow and arrows and a net, showing his pride. He knew that he would have facial tattoos after he returned home, just like his future wife, always obeying the discipline of gaga and proudly showing who they are with good weaving skills and a good heart.
