    Dear PBC Family,

I bring you greetings with God's warmth that I feel on this beautiful Spring day! It is a blessing to have achurch family to share our lives with and see God's Kingdom unfold. I am aware that life has a way of taking

us on twists and turns we may not have imagined. I am also aware that the journey is as important as the desti-nation. We got to go as a family last year to the beach for the first time! That was a great trip filled with adven-ture and new experiences. Because of scheduling change, the Baptist Campus Ministries Beach Trip falls over

the same time as finals at A-B and graduation! We will miss that opportunity this year, but look forward to oth-er experiences God has in store for us instead!

I would encourage all of us to continue to make time to create memories with those that God has placed in our

path to share our lives. Our Church family, our neighbors, our classmates, co-workers as well as our families. Iknow my life is richer because I have shared it with you all! With summer approaching I would encourageeach of us to make an extra effort to create memories of significance. Even as Allie and I found a drive-in res-

taurant tucked away over in Grafton coming back from a track meet this week, it was a wonderful time to cele-brate life and time together!

I was reminded by another parent at the track meet of how busy we allow our lives to get. I know that lifestylepace is not new, I had my parents going in ten different directions at all times during high school!! I am so

thankful that my parents took the time to let me explore different interests. I met so many wonderful andunique people because of our constant going! Even in the madness of a hectic schedule, Jesus took time awayfrom it all to connect with His Heavenly Father. Jesus calls us to find that balance today in our world as well. Iwas sitting in one of the orange high backed chairs in my office one day this week. It was a little before 8am.One of our members walked in and said, "This is a peaceful place to start the day!" I count those early morning

minutes as precious gifts from God! It is a time where I have found I can connect with Him and re-focus forwhat lies ahead.

Thomas, one of our twins, was telling about a similar place he has found. For him, it is while he is mowing the

grass! He said, "Dad I think through a problem I've had or something I want to do better while I'm cutting thegrass!" I pray you have found your secret place as well. Psalm 91:1 - "He that dwelleth in the secret place ofthe most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."(KJV) For Bobby, our other twin, he has found a

place in music. Whether it is sitting down at the piano or playing a new wind instrument he has discoveredcalled an ocarina, Bobby comes alive as he puts melody to the symphony playing in his head.

And the list goes on - Koreen gets up at 5:45 to walk with Cheryl Wolf around campus, Caleb loves to playtennis with his college cronies, Allison runs like the wind over great distances and I find great therapeutic val-

ue in racquetball and table tennis! I'm not sure what it is with you, but I would encourage you to not limit yourconnection to God in passive activity alone! I know the list for our greater church family is as varied as wehave people! Gardening, Painting, Basket Weaving, Quilting, Hiking, Biking, Babysitting, Parents Sitting,Hospice Care, Civil War Reenactments, Singing, Conducting, Musicianship, and Sports of every kind!

May Colossians 3:17 be our life verse this summer and beyond!!!

"And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the

    Father through him" (ESV)

    Shalom,

    Pastor Jon

    Spring is officially here

Spring is officially here! The birds are singing, the wild flowers are blooming, and winter

has hidden itself for another three seasons. Waking up to sunlight streaming through the

windows reminds me that summer is just around the corner, but I am perfectly happy to

enjoy spring while we have it.

Like my mother, I love to garden. I love planting my flowers, watering them, and turningthem so each little leaf gets just the right amount of sunlight. I even talk to my plants! I

have to tell them fanciful stories of the funny things that have happened to me, or read to

them from one of my books. Sometimes, I even have to plant them in a bigger pot and

clean up a mess. I take very good care of them, and in return, they grown into beautiful,

colorful flowers that make my apartment smell like a bed of roses.

What do you think would happen if I didnt take care of my plants? Do you think they

would still be as healthy and beautiful? Or what if I close my blinds and never let the sun

shine on them? Could the flowers still bloom into their colorful petals? The fact is that for

plants to grow up healthy and strong, they have to be nurtured.

They need sunlight, water, and good soil.

Just like plants grow, do you. Can you live won junk food like ice cream and soda pop?

No! To grow up healthy and strong you have to eat the right foods, drink plenty of water,

get lots of sleep, and be rooted in the right soil! Well, the soil of Jesus! The apostle Paul

once wrote in the Bible about being rooted and grounded in love in his letter to the Ephe-

sians (Chapter 3:17-19). God wants us to be rooted in Jesus. While eating the right foods,

drinking water and getting plenty of rest helps our physical body grow, being rooted in

Jesus Christ helps our spiritual body grow.

Also, just as a plant needs certain things, so does our spiritual body. We need food that

    comes from reading the Bible (Matthew 4:4). Even for children its important to read theBible and start memorizing verses. The Bible equips us to serve God (2 Timothy 3:17;

Ephesians 6:17. It even teaches us how we should live (Psalm 32:8).

We need water that comes from mature Christians pouring into us. Its important for us

to attend church on a regular basis so that we can continually learn about Jesus and how

to live a righteous life. Church also gives us a great place to fellowship with other Chris-

tians. Through that fellowship we can help each other grow into stronger believers. Lastly,

we need sunlight, the sunlight the comes from

Jesus Christ. Its important to build a relationship with Jesus Christ through prayer

(Philippians 4:6-7). Prayer is one of the best ways for us to communicate with God and

grow in our relationship with Him.

I have a challenge for you! After you finish reading today, sit down with you Bible and

your parents, and look up these verses:Ephesians 3:17-19

    Matthew 4:4

    John 15:5

    1 Thessalonians 5: 12-22

When you finish reading, talk with your parents about what you need to grow up healthy and strong,

both physically and spiritually. Then make a list of things you could do every day to help you grow start

    growing!

With much love in Christ, Miss Pickles

    Car Crazy!

Scott Springer says that he has always been interested in cars, particularly the antique

kind. That made him the idea first driver of the first van owned by Philippi Baptist

Church, for that van needed a lot of tender loving care. Scott spent many hours keeping

it running. He still serves as one of the drivers of the newer van.

Both of Scotts parents were born in or near Fairmont, the location of his own birth.

When he was very young, his father, a hospital administrator, moved the family to Pitts-

burgh for a year, then to Wheeling for another year, and then to Steubenville, Ohio. In

1960 Richard Springer brought his family to Philippi and became the chief administra-

tor at Broaddus Hospital, a position he held until 1983.

In the meantime, Scott attended public schools in Philippi, graduating from Philip Bar-

bour High School in 1968. He went to Fairmont State College for a year and a half, then

spent four years in the Air Force in Texas, Vietnam, and Kansas City. Coming back

home, he soon secured a job with the Mine Safety and Health Administration, working

first as a lab technician, then as an inspection assistant, and then as a mine inspector, for

a total of thirty-one years. He retired in 2005 and since then has focused on the church

and his antique cars, the dozen of which he ownsnot all in working condition!

Scotts marriage to Carla Phillips in 1990 provided him with two step -children

Stephen and Michelle, who have, in turn, provided him with four step-grandchildren,

two boys and two girls aged one to ten.

The Springers joined PBC in 1960, and Scott and his brother, Jay, were baptized by The

Reverend Hilding Lind in 1964. Sister Donna followed them a few years later. Since

then, Scott has served several times on the Board of Trustees and on the Diaconate. He

is currently the Assistant Financial Secretary. Smiling, he remembers great times in

the church youth group, sharing the fun with Rick Shearer, Gerald Fogg, Jeff Hollen,

and Suzanne Smith. Suzie Shearer and Terry Jones, who became her husband, were a

few years older, and they took us to a number of out-of-town events. That youth group

and this church have been and always will be an important part of my life.
