We wrote about it this week-end, but the Newtering ofSpeaker Gingrich shows nosigns of slowing as establish-ment Republicans — that is,the very group in which Mr.Gingrich can rightly claim tosquarely belong — rush toprevent his most recent surge. There is now, however, onesignificant update: His cavalryhave arrived.

Sarah Palin — rememberher? — was back Friday with ascathing take-down of thelamestream media, “Cannibals

in GOP Establishment EmployTactics of the Left,” in whichthe down-home diva lamentedRepublicans’ co-option of suchallegedly liberal strategies as“singl[ing] someone out anddestroy[ing] his or her record”and “using the media,” neitherof which anyone on the righthas ever purposefully em-ployed, we’re sure.

Disregarding the oozinghypocrisy of someone em-ployed by Fox News question-ing use of the media; ignoringthe fact that Palin here framesthe idea of judging candidatesbased on their governingrecords as some sort of liberalcrime; and seeing as there isvery little chance that she ac-tually authored this extremistscreed herself — wait, actual-ly, we really aren’t able to do

any of those things.Gingrich also received

some support from anotherright-wing icon, pizzamanHerman Cain, who over theweekend threw his weight be-hind the maligned candidate. This marks what could be in-terpreted as Cain’s third en-dorsement of the season: The“unconventional” first was de-clared for “the people” in anembarrassing media stunt; thesecond for himself, despitehaving dropped out, owing tohis participation in a bit ofelectoral parody at StephenColbert’s “Rock Me Like a Her-man Cain South Cain-olinaPrimary Rally”; and now this.

Something tells us Gingrichis going to have to do better.

Can A$AP Rocky, a youngHarlem rapper with a love forhigh-end streetwear andSouthern-style beats, bring thespotlight back to hip-hop’sbirthplace? Drake and SnoopDogg are among the genre’sstars who seem to think so.

Drake had Rocky open onhis recent Club Paradise tour. With his mix tape, “Live-LoveA$AP,” he’s been keepingthe Internet buzzing with astream of music and self-direct-ed videos. And that buzz is sobig that it resulted in a $3 mil-lion label deal with RCA forhimself and his crew, A$APMob. Now with Rocky’s single

“Peso” jumping on mainstreamradio, the rapper — or “thatpretty motherf—,” as he’scalled himself — is hitting theroad for his first headliningtour.

Rocky’s given name isRakim Mayers, named afterone-half of the legendary hip-hop duo Eric B. & Rakim. Sohow does a kid from Harlemnamed after a hip-hop legenddevelop such a love for thatHouston sound?

“When I first heard it,” hesays, “it just appealed to me somuch that it became a habit.”

Rocky says he’s enjoyed notonly getting respect from his

elders, but also advice.“Some young rappers are

too stubborn and disrespectfulto take heed,” he says. “Youngrappers get caught up in thehype. Me? I’m always in stu-dent mode.”

But this intergenerationalexchange works both ways.

“Technically we are smarterthan the generation before us,”he says. “We have technologyand all that revolutionary s—.The older generation is morewise. And there is a differencebetween wit and wisdom.”

Rocky talks good music, handlingbusiness and listening to his elders

A$AP Rocky rocked the crowd at the CMJ Music Marathon inNYC last fall. He plays a sold-out show with Stu Cat tonight at Middle East Downstairs (480 Mass. Ave., Cambridge).

Why was it so important foryou to not have the normalartist deal? How were youable to make that happen?

Because I’m not a normalperson. I told these labels, ‘If you don’t have any interest in giving me a label,go f— yourself.’ That wasthat. It started off as negotiation of what we aregoing to get for a label deal.People knew what I wantedfrom the jump.

Forget what you thinkyou know about medita-tion: You don’t need tosit cross-legged, you

don’t need to light candles andyou definitely don’t need to bea Buddhist monk. All you need, according to Jeff Cannon, au-thor of “The Simple Truth:Meditation for the ModernWorld,” is a willingness to quietyour brain for a few moments.

“Most people think of medi-tation as having to sit for halfan hour, or going away on aweekend retreat,” he says. “It’sreally just a focus of the mind. You can meditate walking. Youcan meditate standing.Scientists have found that withas little as 15 minutes a day, your brain actually startsremapping itself. To meditatefor a couple of minutes givesyou stability.”

And it’s not just good for im-proving your mental health:

Your physical wellbeing bene-fits from meditation, too.

“There are almost endlessstudies right now on lowerblood pressure, ability to con-trol anxiety. They’re using it for

pretty much anything thatstress can negatively affect.More and more in the medicalcommunity are finding thatit’s an important part of heal-ing [and] recovery. After a 10-hour brain surgery I was out ofthe hospital in about threedays, and the doctors werestunned because I wasn’t tak-ing any pain medication — Iwas going back to meditating.”

Indeed, Cannon’s interest inmeditation reached its heightwhile he recuperated from a10-hour surgery that removedsix tumors from his brain.

“In the six months I had toseriously recover, I not onlywatched my brain slowly re-boot itself, but I started readingmore and more about neuro-plasticity. [Scientists] used tothink the brain was just a staticorgan, it didn’t change. Butwhat they started learning wasthe brain actually remaps itself

Why you should meditateThe benefits go far beyond reduced stress A matter of minutes is

all you need If your mind wanders, don’t worry How to get started

Cannon’s guide

to meditation

If you’re sitting, move to theedge of your chair and makeyour back straight. Or, standup straight.Close your eyes and breathein through your nose, intoyour stomach and hold itthere for a couple of counts. Then breathe back out. Slowly breathe in for a countof eight and then hold it for acount of two, then breatheback out for a count of eight.Place your attention on yourbreath: on the tip of yournose, at the feel of your stom-ach as it moves or at the travelof air coming through yourthroat, into your lungs andthen back out. Repeat the process.

all the time. I started exploringmore and more to say, ‘Well, ifthe brain can change, thenwhy can’t we change thebrain?’”

Cannon swears that if youpick up the habit, you’ll see re-sults “within the first week.”

“You start noticing that in-stead of making rash decisionsor responding to issues byhabit, you all of a sudden startpausing your life.”

Distractions willhappen: It’s OK“Your mind is there to be dis-

tracted. Just ac-knowledge thatyou have athought. You cantell yourself, ‘Notnow, this is my

time to meditate,’ and comeback to focusing on yourbreath. This morning I wasmeditating and you couldhear a fire engine go by. Youjust acknowledge, ‘That’s afire engine, OK, that doesn’tbother me right now.’”

Remember one monthago when you were go-ing to get in shape, eatbetter and quit smok-

ing in 2012? Too often, work be-comes a place of limbo forthose goals.

Fitness guru Mark Allen, co-author of “Fit Soul, Fit Body: 9Keys to a Healthier, HappierYou,” stresses the importanceof setting realistic goals foryour schedule — and then tak-ing time to reflect on thosegoals throughout the work day.“Sometimes the reason we getdiscouraged is because we al-low our mood to influence ouractions,” he says. “Maybeyou’ve had a bad day and tellyourself it’s pointless to workout, or you convince yourself

it’s too hard. Instead, set aside aquiet time to reflect on yourgoals.”

If the constant barrage ofsugary snacks in the breakroom is beating down your diet

willpower, Allen suggests youget back on track by writingyourself a contract that you canstick to. Keep it simple, clearand attainable, such as: “By myJune 1 doctor’s appointment, Iaim to have lowered my choles-terol by 10 points and lost 10pounds.”

The buddy exercise systemcan be valuable in the office, not just at the gym. Jill Spiegel, author of “How to Talk toAnyone About Anything! TheSecrets to Connecting,” be-lieves in finding a “walk part-ner” at work. “Next time you’rechatting in the break room ortalking in the lobby, positivelyshare your [health] goals withyour co-workers,” says Spiegel.“Energy is contagious.”

On your blog you seem to bemicro-managing almost everymoment of your day. Does thatever cause anxiety? I have been accused of being alittle overproductive. For me,it’s about creating a lifestylewhere, if I get more done in

shorter amounts of time, I openup windows of time to do any-thing I want. What’s the simplest thing anoffice worker can change to enhance productivity?Adjust the way they managetheir e-mail. There are threekinds of e-mail: stuff they haveto think about later, stuff thatthey’re managing over timeand then there are some thatare an action they have to take. Most people flag certain e-mail or forward it to them-selves to kick it back to thetop. But when you send themback to yourself, change thesubject lines of your action e-mails to verbs: “Call,”“Review,” “Print.” Then sud-

denly your inbox becomes ato-do list, not just this randomclutter of communication. What’s something a person cando today to make a positivechange in his or her career?Subscribe to five magazinesabout something you want tolearn about. Buy five booksabout that same topic, and signup for five days of conferences. You’re going to get 60 issues ofideas about whatever it isyou’re stepping into. The bookswill let you dive deep into thesubject matter, and the confer-ences will create a social con-nection with what you’regrowing toward. Those threethings could set your year upfor real growth. For over a decade, Milton Chenwas the executive director ofthe George Lucas EducationalFoundation. The foundation’sflagship website, Edutopia.org,represents Lucas’ vision forclassrooms of the future. Andjust as Lucas trumpeted CGI inHollywood, Edutopia passion-ately advocates for new tech-nologies in the classroom.

Chen’s new book, “Educa-tion Nation: Six Leading Edgesof Innovation in Our Schools,"highlights the technologies andtheories Chen views as trans-formative possibilities for a bet-ter, more equitable educationsystem in the U.S.

“In every urban district inevery state there are these se-vere inequalities. That is his-toric. It’s based on the way inwhich schools are funded, andthe ability of suburban schoolsto build a much greater eco-nomic base,” says Chen. “But Ithink part of the hope for thisnew age of learning is that tech-nologies can help reduce thoseinequalities.”

Before taking the lead atGLEF, Chen was a pioneer ineducational television, workingas a research specialist for“Sesame Street.” He comparesmuch of the current backlashagainst new classroom tech-

nologies to the debate over edu-cational television he wit-nessed in the ’70s and ’80s.“The idea that you could usetelevision to teach was reallyforeign to many educators. They often said, ‘How couldyou possibly use the medium toimpart information to people?’because there were no exam-ples of it working. But ‘SesameStreet’ changed our view ofhow early kids can learn. Sud-denly, kids were coming toschool already knowing theirletters and numbers.”

Next week at this time the Pa-triots will either be Super BowlXLVI champions or losers oftheir second Super Bowl in arow.

You’ll either be running tothe newsstands and your lap-top or avoiding them alto-gether.

But right now, it’s a week’sworth of preparation for thePats — physical and mental —as they touched down in Indi-anapolis yesterday.

No, Indianapolis isn’t “theplace to be” on a Friday night. It’s not New Orleans duringMardi Gras, or Miami during, well, anytime. But an extraweek leading up to the SuperBowl is not only an extra weekof preparation, it’s also an extra

week of potential distractions.Although the majority of

players on this season’s teamhave never been to a SuperBowl, they don’t seem too wor-ried about it.

“I say you just have to stayfocused,” Aaron Hernandezsaid. “When you’ve been play-ing this game as long as someof the other players and as longas I’ve been playing it’s kind ofeasy to put everything elseaside and focus on your nextobstacle. It’s not that hard tostay focused for a Super Bowlbecause if you ain’t ready for agame like this then you proba-bly shouldn’t be playing ball.”

Deion Branch, a two-timeSuper Bowl champ and one-time MVP (SB XXIX) has proven

to be very focused for the SuperBowl. He took advice fromteammates who played in thebig game during the 2001 sea-son, and now passes on someknowledge of his own.

“Just to take it all and justtry not to do anything special[or] spectacular,” he said. “Justdo what we’ve been doing all

Doing one’s job has beenthe unofficial theme of the sea-son for the Patriots, and it’s got-ten them this far. But the goalisn’t to get to the Super Bowl –it’s to win it. The Pats havecome up short as of late, butthey’ll be ready Sunday.

“It is going to be a big chal-lenge,” Logan Mankins said.“We’re going to have to playour best game of the year, prob-ably the best game of some ofour careers. That’s when youwant to play your best game, isin the Super Bowl.”

They have been moved to theback of the Boston sportspantry by talk of Bowls andCups. But it’s never too early todish on the 2012 Red Sox. Withspring training less than amonth away, and the roster fi-nally coming into focus, theconcerns heading into the sea-son are becoming clearer. Andcoming off the epic collapse of2011, there is no shortage ofriddles for Bobby Valentine tosolve.

CARL CRAWFORDIt took him longer than antici-pated, but Valentine was finallyable to get his left fielder on thetelephone to talk about thepast and the future. As an ESPNanalyst in 2011, Valentine hadbeen critical of the strugglingCrawford’s batting stance. Andafter an excruciatingly longgame of phone tag, Valentine

and Crawford cleared the airearlier this month.

“Carl and I talked a longtime,” Valentine said twoweeks ago. “It went good."

But already, Crawford’s 2012season is off to rocky start.Crawford recently had leftwrist surgery, putting his avail-ability for Opening Day in jeop-ardy. After slumping badly un-der the weight of his seven-year, $142 million contract lastseason, another sluggish start isthe last thing he or the organi-zation can afford.

SHORTSTOPAnd you thought Theo Epsteinhad a blind spot for the short-stop position?

That the Red Sox had late-season acquisition Mike Avilesplay outfield this winter, in-stead of his natural infield posi-tions, is a pretty strong indica-

tion that the offseason plan didnot include Aviles being a pri-mary shortstop in 2012.

But that all went out thewindow two weeks ago whenthe Red Sox shipped Marco Scu-taro to Colorado for a minor-league pitching prospect, leav-ing the Red Sox with just Avilesand Nick Punto as the only vi-able shortstops on the roster.

The Red Sox are hopingthat prized prospect Jose Igle-sias will take over the short-stop job for years to come. Butthe 22-year-old has thus farproven to be all glove, no stickin the minors, and if that con-tinues in spring training, itmay leave the Red Sox with agiant sucking sound at short-stop all season.

STARTING PITCHINGWhat was supposed to be thesure thing on the 2011 Red Sox

proved to be its Achilles’ heel.Clay Buchholz got hurt, JohnLackey got rocked and JonLester and Josh Beckett got thebeer and fried chicken. Thatgot the Red Sox a Septembermeltdown and a third-placefinish.

Will it be any better in2012? Figure the food anddrink selections will be severe-ly curtailed in the Valentineadministration, but the ques-tions linger: Is Buchholz’s backbetter? Can Lester regain his

luster? Can Beckett repair hisreputation as staff leader? Andhas time healed whateverwounds Daniel Bard sufferedas a starter in the minorleagues before the Red Soxoriginally moved him to thebullpen in 2010?
