Over the past year, I have been delighted to have the opportunity to serve as President of the Golf Association of Ontario. 2012 was a productive year for the GAO, and I’ve had the pleasure of working with a dedicated team of volunteers and staff. I have travelled across the province to see many of our programs and initiatives in action, and I have been particularly impressed by our progress with Golf in Schools and Junior Golf Development Centres (JGDCs), as well as the achievements of the young athletes in our high performance program.

There were several highlights from the past year that stand out in my mind, including;

• Fifty-four of our young players participated in the Ontario Summer Games at Cedar Brae Golf and Country Club. Our athletes participated in the opening ceremonies in downtown Toronto and the event itself was a great success culminating in a podium presentation to the Gold, Silver and Bronze medalists.

• A number of clubs from the Ottawa Valley joined the GAO, with a projection for more to join in 2013. We worked hard to establish an effective working relationship with the Ottawa Valley Golf Association and with those clubs who have joined the GAO. This is an important initiative for us given the recognition by the Ontario Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sport as the provincial association for the sport of golf.

• We held a very successful fundraising golf tournament in May at the Granite Club in Stouffville. The Junior Golf Drive raised approximately $40,000 to help support junior golf in the province. Athletes and coaches from our Team Ontario program were there to help throughout the day and were individually recognized at the dinner. Our particular thanks to the Granite Club for hosting the event and we look forward to returning again in 2013.

Ontario was once again very well represented at national and international events.

• At the World Amateur Team Championship in Turkey, the Canadian team consisted entirely of players from Ontario with the women’s team finishing 7th and the men’s team finishing T6. GAO Board member, Liz Hoffman also served as a non-playing captain on the women’s side.

• Brooke Henderson earned the Canadian Junior Girls’ title and also became the youngest-ever player to win a professional event when she won the CN Canadian Women’s Tour event in Quebec.

• Mackenzie Hughes won his second straight Canadian Amateur title, while Terrill Samuel earned the Canadian Senior Women’s title and Dave Bunker picked up his sixth Canadian Men’s Mid-Master title.

• Ontario also came out on top in the Women’s Amateur, Junior Girls’, Senior Women’s and Men’s Amateur inter-provincial team competitions.

Financially, we had a strong year in a challenging environment where new sources of revenue are difficult to obtain to support new initiatives. This will be a future focus.

Also, I must recognize and thank our many corporate sponsors who have continued to support us. Without that support, we would not be able to execute world-class events or continue to move forward with our expansion of programs.

Last but not least, we had another outstanding year where our dedicated volunteers stepped up to support our events and provide leadership for our many programs and events. I would like to say a sincere thank you to all the volunteers that gave their time in 2012.

Much remains to be done at a time when we are challenged by declining membership numbers. I believe our strategies to deal with these challenges are sound and achievable, and I have every confidence in the ability of our Board and staff to meet these challenges head on. The game of golf in Ontario is in good hands and our future direction is clear.

Committee ReportsHANDICAP AND COURSE RATING REPORT

Members of the Handicap and Course Rating committee met during the 2012 season to fulfill committee mandates in the following areas:

Handicap Licensing and CertificationEach member club of the Golf Association of Ontario/Golf Canada (GAO/GC) issu-ing handicap factors must have a handicap committee. At least one member of the handicap committee must take a handicap certification seminar course conducted by the GAO. The GAO conducted five handicap certification seminars allowing 105 members from 49 clubs to become certified handicap officials. The GAO also launched an online handicap certification course, which another 26 registered for and achieved certification for 18 clubs. The GAO Handicap/Course Rating depart-ment also conducted several club member educational sessions to promote the handicap system in concert with the host club’s handicap committee. These sessions were conducted to explain the player’s responsibilities to maintaining a handicap factor in the Golf Canada Handicap System, and to promote the efforts of the club handicap committee who is acting on behalf of the GAO/GC.

There are 418 member clubs that have signed and returned the Golf Canada Handi-cap License Agreement. There are 167 licences which expire December 31, 2012, and these clubs will have to renew their agreement to fulfill club obligations in the program. The agreement helps to ensure compliance with the Golf Canada Handi-cap System and authorizes those golf clubs to issue valid handicap factors to their members. The majority of our member clubs (318) continue to use the Golf Canada Network (handicap software) to maintain handicap factors for their membership.

Course RatingsThis year 55 courses were rated for both men and woman (twelve were combination courses: 27 or more holes). Efforts to recruit a team in the Niagara District were fruitful this year. A training session was held for the team and we expect they will be rating full time in 2013. We also conducted a provincial course rating training seminar in May that concentrated on sharpening the skills of our Team Leaders. Scott Hovde from the United States Golf Association attended as our guest expert instructor to test and explain some of the finer points and procedures of the course rating system.

We very much appreciate all volunteers who willingly committed their time, expertise and energy to further the work of our Handicap and Course Rating Committee. Those who represent the Golf Association of Ontario and our Committee so very well are; Course Raters, Team Leaders, Master Course Raters, Club Handicap Certified Of-ficials, Club Handicap Committee Chairpersons, and those who served on their club handicap committee.

Respectfully submittedCraig Loughry,Director of Handicapping and Course Rating

DISTRICT COORDINATORS COMMITTEE REPORT The District Coordinators Committee meets throughout the year sharing “best prac-tices” that continues to strength the scope of district programs.

The Intersection Matches Competition, that continues to grow in the Kingston District, was successfully launched this season in the Peterborough District. The inaugural matches’ involved four clubs fielding teams within two sections that resulted in the Briars Golf Club winning the Men’s A section and Lindsay Golf Club winning the Senior Men’s section. Plans are underway to add a women’s section for 2013. The commit-tee wishes to express their appreciation to the volunteers who willingly committee their time, expertise and energy that strengthens the districts programs.

ANNA POSTE DICK GRIMM DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

Trenton’s Anna Poste has devoted countless hours of her time to golf in several different capacities. Her passion and dedication is evidenced by her commitment to better the game in this prov-ince for nearly three decades. After taking up the game in the late 1970’s, Anna was already volunteering at the district level of the Ontario Ladies’ Golf Association by 1980. Anna was attracted to the fairness of the game provided by the rules, and since ob-taining her rules certification in 1982 she has been active at the local, provincial and national level officiating events such as the Canadian Amateur Championship and LPGA Nation’s Cup. A longtime member at Trenton Golf Club, Anna has served as Ladies’ Captain and club President, while being involved with nu-merous district committees and initiatives. Anna’s experience with the OLGA, the Canadian Ladies’ Golf Association and with the newly amalgamated GAO made her an easy choice for the role of President of the GAO in 2003, after serving as First Vice President in 2002. Poste became the first woman to serve as GAO President, and was also the first female elected as a “C” Class Governor of the RCGA (now Golf Canada). On top of her long list of roles and accomplishments, Poste has served on numerous committees for both the GAO and Golf Canada. Anna is well known across Ontario as a caring and dedicated part of the golf community who will always greet you with a smile. Her dedication to the game of golf coupled with her warm and positive attitude make her an invaluable asset to the GAO. We are honoured to name Anna Poste as the 2012 recipient of the Dick Grimm Distinguished Service Award.

The Dick Grimm Distinguished Service Award is considered the highest honour recognizing individual service to the game of golf in Ontario. The award is named after Richard H. Grimm, who has been affectionately known as “Mr. Canadian Open” for his service to the event from 1965 to 1993. This award recognizes an individual’s meritorious service to the game of golf in Ontario as a volunteer. Recipients of this award embody the principles of integrity, dignity and commitment which are central to the volunteer experience and to Mr. Grimm’s persona.

Commitee Reports • ScholarshipMARKETING AND FUNDRAISINGWith the additional focus on fundraising, 2012 proved to be another busy but successful year for the GAO. Our committee and staff continue to deliver consistent brand messaging to build off the brand launch in 2011. This was even more important with the increased communication resulting from the addition of Ottawa Valley clubs to GAO membership. Going forward, support for the OVGA will be an important part of our Marketing and Fundraising initiatives. In the area of fundraising significant results were achieved through the annual Online Auction program, along with the addition of a new fundraising event, The Junior Golf Drive. This tournament was a tremendous success in 2012, and as a result we were able to infuse additional revenue into the area of sport development specific to juniors. Due to this success, The Junior Golf Drive has been identified as an annual fundraising initiative. Two new areas of membership communication were introduced in 2012; the vTour platform for online tournaments, and the Golf Ontario digital magazine. Although, the digital magazine did not live up to expectations in its inaugural year, the vTours were a rousing success. With over 1200 members participating in the 4 events over the course of the summer the initiative received excellent feedback from all those involved. The marketing support provided to Sport Development, Handicap & Course Rating and championships in 2012 only helped to ensure best in class delivery of events, programs and services in each area. Thanks to committee volunteers and staff.

MEMBERSHIPDue to significant GAO programming changes in recent years, and the added respon-sibility for our programs to be accessible to all golfers in Ontario, the GAO has reached out to educate Ontario Clubs in the Ottawa Valley to share information about these changes and to provide the opportunity to make an informed decision of their provin-cial affiliation. The GAO welcomed 22 Ottawa Valley Ontario Clubs into membership in 2012; this number continues to grow for 2013. The Ottawa Valley Golf Association (OVGA) plays an important and valued role to clubs in the Ottawa Valley, and the GAO is committed to providing support to the OVGA and its services. In general, club membership is facing a gradual decline, consistent with the market. The GAO Team continues to work with industry partners to develop initiatives to meet the needs of our members and future members. The GAO Public Player Program con-tinues to grow; 7% increase over 2011. Public Players now represent 7% of total GAO Membership. Many member clubs celebrated noteworthy milestones in 2012, and we congratulate all for the dedication of their members, volunteers and staff and their valued contribu-tions to the sport of golf. Many of our Club Members are also to be congratulated for their memorable achievements – almost 600 Hole in One Certificates and 40 Shoot Your Age Awards were prepared for presentation in 2012.

Ontario Golf Hall of Fame

The Golf Association of Ontario welcomed four new members into the Ontario Golf Hall of Fame in 2012. Revered golf course architect and competitive player Graham Cooke, longtime Kent State Univerity Director of Golf Herb Page, former RCGA Executive Director Stephen Ross and radio personality Wally Crouter were honoured at the annual induction ceremony at Wooden Sticks Golf Club in May.

Hosted by CTV Toronto anchor Ken Shaw, the ceremony highlighted each of the inductees’ accomplishments and contributions to the game of golf, and featured an opportunity for each to share memories from their careers with the audience. Canadian and Ontario Golf Hall of Fame member and well-known golf journalist Lorne Rubenstein was on hand to present Crouter with the inaugural Lorne Rubenstein Media Award, established to honour members of the media that have made significant contributions to the game of golf in Ontario.

Crouter is best known as the beloved morning voice of Toronto’s CFRB 1010 where he spent more than 50 years on air before his retirement in 1996. As an avid golfer, Crouter’s love of the game was well known to his listeners and he could often be found on the course with golf legends such as Sam

Snead, Al Balding, Moe Norman, and Arnold Palmer.

Graham Cooke became the Ontario Golf Hall of Fame’s 58th inductee and spoke about his lengthy career as a golf course architect and standout amateur golfer. As president of Graham Cooke & Associates, he has designed and overseen the construction of over 100 golf courses. As a competitive golfer, Cooke holds the record for the most national events won by a male amateur, with six Canadian Mid-Amateur titles and four Canadian Senior Amateur titles.

Longtime Kent State University Director of Golf Herb Page reminisced about the 30-plus years he has spent leading collegiate golfers at Kent to an unprecedented 78 tournament titles. Page works tirelessly to develop his athletes while serving as a fundraiser and ambassador for the game of golf and many of his athletes have gone onto great success on the professional stage.

Stephen Ross, a member of the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame, has made outstanding contributions as a leader in the Canadian golf industry. Over a 30-year tenure at the Royal Canadian Golf Association (now Golf Canada), Ross served as Director of Amateur Tournaments and Rules and Director of

Amateur Status and Handicapping before moving into the position of Executive Director in 1989. He led the organization through its Centennial and amalgamation with the Canadian Ladies’ Golf Association, and has established himself internationally as a highly respected member of the golf community.

Congratulations to Graham Cooke, Herb Page, Stephen Ross and Wally Crouter. Following the 2012 ceremony, the Ontario Golf Hall of Fame now has 60 members and is housed within the clubhouse at Wooden Sticks.

We continue to encourage nominations to the Hall of Fame with the appropriate literature available online or from the GAO office, and thank the golf community in Ontario for continuing to support the Ontario Golf Hall of Fame.Respectfully submitted,Warren Crosbie On behalf of the Hall of Fame Committee

YEARBOOK 2012 20 www.GAO.ca www.GAO.ca

With the excitement of the London Olympics this past summer, the GAO is passionately engaged in the Olympic movement; steadily building programs for the long term development of the sport ahead of the 2015 Pan American and 2016 Olympic Games.

2012 was highlighted by significant performances by Ontario’s top athletes including three individual national championship victories; Mackenzie Hughes, back-to-back Canadian Men’s Amateur champion, Brooke Henderson, Canadian Junior Girls’ champion and Terrill Samuel, Canadian Women’s Senior champion. Ontario athletes also excelled at international championships; Garrett Rank was a finalist in the US Mid-Amateur, Matthew Scobie, semi-finalist in the US Junior Boys’ Amateur, Albin Choi, quarter finalist in the USGA Men’s Amateur, Natalie Gleadall, round of 32 in the USGA Women’s Amateur and Augusta James, round of 16 in the British Ladies Amateur.

Provincial Championships are a key component of the GAO’s sport development strategy. Our multi day provincial championships in 2012 were hosted at a collection of world class venues including Wooden Sticks GC, Sleepy Hollow GC, The Lake Joseph Club, Cobble Beach Golf Links, Hawk Ridge GC, Deerhurst Highlands GC, Summit G&CC, Shelburne G&CC, Loyalist GC, The Mandarin G&CC, Puslinch GC, Twenty Valley G&CC, Midland G&CC, Barcovan GC and Galt CC. Thank you to our rules sub-committee of John Turner, Lee Griffin and Jim Furlong who have been instrumental to the GAO rules education program and its impact on our events.

Golf was once again a main fixture in the 2012 Ontario Summer Games in Toronto. Cedar Brae Golf and Country Club was an incredible host to the top juvenile golfers in Ontario with the gold medals going to Windsor’s Bryce Evon and Georgetown’s Samantha Spencer.

Member Day Events continued to be successful in 2012 as part of the ongoing tournament program with a focus on fun and friendly participation. Thank you to our host clubs; Ladies’ GC of Toronto, Bond Head GC, Eagles Nest GC, Georgian Bay Club, Wooden Sticks and National Pines GC.

The Team Ontario Development Program continued to be a national benchmark for provincial junior high performance as the GAO works to develop the next generation of Champions. The 2012-2013 squads include:

U19 Boys – Christian Elliott, Jeffrey Gardner, Taewon Kim and John Boncoddo. U19 Girls – Meghan Bennett, Sophie Kitchen and Madison Easterbrook. U17 Boys – Tony Gil, Carter Simon, Conner Watt, Chad Watts-Denyes, Sam McNulty and Brendan Seys. U17 Girls – Annika Haynes, Sonia Nagindas, Kennedy Bodfield, Claire Hernandez, Grace St. Germain and Estee Deschamps.

Another major success for golf in Ontario has been the launch Junior Golf Development Centres (JGDC’s) across the province. With 11 recognized centres in 2012 and another 8 coming in 2013, our JGDC’s will be able to serve families with the very best in junior development including team competitive competitions such as the junior Inter-sectionals which was piloted in 2012.

PGA of Canada trained coaches have been a critical piece to the development of golfers across Ontario. The 2012 Ontario Golf Coaches Summit was another example of the GAO’s commitment to supporting these coaches. Hosted at White Oaks

Resort, 70 coaches from across Ontario took part in sharing and learning from some of the world foremost experts including TPI’s Dr. Greg Rose and Peter Mattsson from Swedish Golf Union. The GAO also recognized a number of inspiring coaches with the annual Ontario Golf Coaches Awards including Ann Carroll, Randy McQueen, Graham Castanheiro and the team at BraeBen Golf Course.

Increasing participation is always a major priority for the GAO and 2012 was a banner year for the Mr. Knickers and Friends and the National Golf in Schools programs. We are now reaching over 800 elementary schools in Ontario and golf programming is being introduced into high schools in 2013. Also with help from the Golf Canada Women’s Fund the GAO successfully launched Camp Inspire to ignite junior girls’ golf. This past year, 16 girls, 3 female PGA of Canada coaches and 3 female collegiate players took part in the 3-day camp at the Rock Golf Club and Cleveland’s House Resort in Muskoka.

Funding all these programs from grass roots to high performance continues to be a challenge. In 2012, the Granite Golf Club and its members assisted the GAO in raising over $40,000 through the inaugural Junior Golf Drive fundraising tournament.

Sport relies so heavily on volunteers and they are the true lifeblood of the GAO. Certainly programming would not be possible without the support of our passionate volunteers who work long hours and demonstrate extreme dedicated to enhancing the experience of the golfers in all our programs and events.

The continued success of our athletes and programs is a testament to the focus and dedication that the GAO takes with its sport development programs. We thank Mike, Dave, Larry, Sandy, Mallory, Mary Ann and Jon.

Respectfully submittedLiz Hoffman On behalf of the Sport Development Committee
