SUNDAY 18 MARCH 2012 3PM SYDNEY TOWN HALL
Saint-Saens’ symphonic poem depicts the story of the Greek mythological character Phaeton, who drives his father’s sun chariot for one day with disastrous consequences. The orchestration depicts the energetic horses, scorching heat and passionate characters of this story in a way that will ignite your imagination.
Sydney Youth Orchestra is thrilled to perform William Walton’s song cycle with Taryn Fiebig, principal artist with Opera Australia. Taryn delights audiences with her diverse performances, utterly inhabiting roles to high acclaim. This collection of six songs is a work that will showcase the orchestra’s maturity and Taryn’s emotional range and exceptional vocal technique.
Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony represents not only a turning point in Beethoven’s career, but in the development of composition, a stature shared by few other works. The work’s technical challenges, both to performers and listeners, redefined what a symphony should be.

LOOK AT THE STARS

The startlingly personal orchestral palette of Sibelius is loved by audiences and musicians alike, and this concert is framed by two works written in the same year by the composer, at a time when Sibelius was driven by fierce patriotism.
From the opening bars, Brahms’ Song of Destiny arrests our attention. Inspired by poetry depicting the lives of ‘blessed ones’ and mere mortals, this symphonic poem is one of Brahms’ most original and profound compositions.
Sydney Youth Orchestra is honoured to present the world premiere of Looking at the Stars, by respected Australian composer, Graeme Koehne. Commissioned in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, this moving work will also feature childrens chorus and adult choir.

Join us for an exciting concert of cultural exchange between Australian and Chinese musicians. In collaboration with 2MBS FM and Shanghai East Radio, this performance will feature renowned Chinese pianist William Chen, and works by Australian and Chinese composers. Included is the world premiere of George Palmer’s Piano Concerto, as well as Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.5.
Pianist William Chen is a familiar name to Australia’s classical music scene. Born in China, William came to Australia at age 16, entered into Conservatorium High School and won over 30 competition first prizes in Australia, including the 2MBS-FM Young Performer of the Year award. In Australia, he has appeared as soloist with the Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras. Overseas he has performed with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London.

In his music for Swan Lake, Tchaikovsky produced a score of symphonic proportions and re-established music’s equal partnership with the dance. Much loved selections from this beautiful ballet will delight and transport the audience.
The Sydney Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition returns in 2012, and the winner will be presented in our final performance for the year.
Rachmaninov’s stunning Symphonic Dances is the composer’s final work, and this orchestral suite represents the culmination of his compositional style. At the end of their year’s journey, every young musician in the Sydney Youth Orchestra will shine.
