Reduce Tobacco Use Prevalence Among Youth
Reduce the prevalence of current smoking among HS students to 20% or lower
by 2017 (Baseline and Data Source: YTS 2011, 22%). Intermediate objective for 2013: 21.6%
Intermediate objective for 2015: 20.8%
Reduce the prevalence of current smoking among MS students to 7% or lower
by 2017(Baseline and Data Source: YTS 2011, 8.3%). Intermediate objective for 2013: 7.9%
Intermediate objective for 2015: 7.4%
Reduce the prevalence of current spit tobacco use among HS males to 23% or
lower (Baseline and Data Source: YTS 2011, 24.8%). Intermediate objective for 2013: 24.2%
Intermediate objective for 2015: 23.6%
Reduce the prevalence of current spit tobacco use among MS students to 9%
or lower (Baseline and Data Source: YTS 2011, 10.2%). Intermediate objective for 2013: 9.8%
Intermediate objective for 2015: 9.4%

Reduce Initiation of Tobacco Use By Youth
Increase the percentage of never-smokers among HS students to 60% or
higher by 2017 (Baseline and Data Source: YTS 2011, 50.5%). Intermediate objective for 2013: 53.7%
Intermediate objective for 2015: 56.8%
Increase the percentage of never-smokers among MS students to 80% or
higher by 2017 (Baseline and Data Source: YTS 2011, 75.1%). Intermediate objective for 2013: 76.7%
Intermediate objective for 2015: 78.4%
Increase the percentage of never-spit-tobacco users among HS males to 63%
or higher (Baseline and Data Source: YTS 2011, 58.5%). Intermediate objective for 2013: 60%%
Intermediate objective for 2015: 61.5%
Increase the percentage of never-spit-tobacco users among MS students to
85% or higher by 2017 (Baseline and Data Source: YTS 2011, 81.6%). Intermediate objective for 2013: 82.7%
Intermediate objective for 2015: 83.9%
The WV DTP Youth Program is working to
achieve it’s objectives by:
• Growing WV’s teen-led, statewide youth tobacco prevention movement (RAZE)
• Promoting youth tobacco cessation programs
• Promoting tobacco control policies
• Implementing elementary school prevention programs
• Implementing counter-marketing campaigns

Successes
• Between 2000 and 2011 WV experienced:
– A 108% increase in the percentage of high school students who
have never used any form of tobacco (now at 43%; was 20.6%
in 2000).
– A 96% increase in the percentage of high school students who
have never tried cigarettes (now at 50.5%; was 25.7% in 2000).
– A 42% decrease in the percentage of high school students who
currently smoke cigarettes (now at 22%; was 39% in 2000).
– Over 90% of WV high school students know of Raze.
